(This is a repost of episode 51, which was a special Christmas episode from last season.) Today, we talk about what it means to love your neighbor at Christmas. By looking at the Parable of the Good Samaritan, we discover loving your neighbor doesn’t just mean the ability to identify needs, but the ability to become a different kind of person. Jesus doesn’t mainly describe what your neighbor looks like, but what you should look like. We’re going to challenge you and hopefully inspire you this Christmas season. We will also give you practical ideas you can use to love your neighbor.

Dr. Tom Price helps us to understand the Incarnation. The Incarnation is the core of the Christian faith, which differentiates it from all other religions and philosophies. The Incarnation truly matters in your life today. This is an AMAZING Christmas episode!
Dr. Tom Price (DPhil, University of Oxford) teaches Theology, Christian Ethics, and Apologetics at Gordon-Conwell, and he is one of the hosts of The Theology Pugcast.

Do you have hope for the future? Part of having hope in the future is investing in its people--our kids. Veteran Pastor of Student Ministries Josh Newton joins us today to talk about students, the church, and what we need to know about our kids. Josh is wise, humble, and full of gospel grace for our kids and their families. He deals with misconceptions, gives valuable advice for parents, and discusses some of the bright spots with teens today. He also peels back some of the Bumper Stickers kids (and adults!) like to hide behind, and he paints a vision for how student ministry can thrive in the church today.
Josh is Pastor of Student Ministries at The Orchard Church in the Chicagoland area. He is also a part of Rooted Ministry (www.rootedministry.com).

Dr. Ingrid Faro returns to talk about her outstanding new book "Demystifying Evil: A Biblical and Personal Exploration." Today, we focus on angels, demons, and other spiritual beings from chapter 11. You'll probably be surprised about how many different kinds of spiritual beings the Bible talks about. This is a wonderful discussion with Dr. Faro!
Dr. Faro is Professor of Old Testament at Northern Seminary. She writes and speaks about navigating evil and suffering, abuse, women in the Bible, Genesis, Ecclesiastes, the suffering of God, forgiveness, and leadership. Dr. Ahlquist joins me today to talk about the larger than life (quite literally!) figure, who played a great influence on the faith of C. S. Lewis. Dale Ahlquist is president of the Society of G. K. Chesterton, author of six books, including "Chesterton: the Apostle of Common Sense," and is considered the greatest living authority on the life and work of Chesterton. For my 100th episode, I speak with Annie Crawford! www.anniecrawford.net. We talk about cultural apologetics, modernism, and the symbolic view of the world. She tells us the differences between science and scientism, and she points out how today we separate meaning from matter. Then we dig into That Hideous Strength by C. S. Lewis. She guides us through its themes and shows us how to live faithfully during times of trial and testing. And at the end, we are surprised by Merlin! So, get out of your procrustean bed and engage with this episode!
Annie Crawford is a cultural apologist, classical educator, and homeschooling mom. She writes and edits for An Unexpected Journal, co-founded The Society for Women of Letters, and so much more. She was recently on The Symbolic World Podcast speaking with Jonathan Pageau. You can read her Symbolic World article about C. S. The poems of Seth Wieck will stick with you. You'll find yourself waking up in the middle of the night thinking about coyotes, the prophet Amos, prisons, and Pharaoh. Fathom Magazine writes, "Seth writes with such a sense of place and depth and specificity. His stories will stick with you." Seth is a husband, father, and poet from Amarillo, Texas. He has won multiple awards for his work. We had a blast talking about his method, faith, influential poets, metaphor, how to grow in your writing, and why the world needs poetry now. Toward the end, Seth reads his poem "Catch All." To learn more about him and read his poems and prose, go to www.sethwieck.com.

Should you celebrate Thanksgiving? How about Columbus Day? While media lately has been denigrating these two holidays, today's guest wants us to think a little deeper. His name is Dr. Jeffery Fynn-Paul, and he is a professor of history at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Dr. Fynn-Paul studies history in eight different languages, is an expert on slavery, and specializes in the economic and social history of Europe and the Mediterranean from the 1300's to the present, with particular emphasis on urban institutions, state formation, public debt, and class, in relation to economic growth. His goal is to help us re-balance the present cultural narrative concerning the USA being fundamentally evil. We discuss what is at stake in the cultural conversation and what you can do as a responsible citizen. Was America stolen? How have all cultures come to be? Why did the Native Americans eagerly sell their land to the Europeans? Are you aware of your cultural shadow? We dig deeply into the ramifications of this complicated, yet important subject.

Today I talk to my favorite musician, John Van Deusen. The Gospel Coalition named John’s album “Marathon Daze” the top Christian album of the year for 2022. John has produced music with Judah, John Guerra, Teniella Neda, and many more. If you haven’t heard of John, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out his work—start with his devotional album “Every Power Wide Awake,” also known as “I Am Origami 2.” His most recent album is a Christmas album titled “In the Bleak Midwinter.” I just got the vinyl and it is fantastic! John started his music career in the band Lonely Forest, which had good success. But, in an effort to honor God and become more healthy, he began to do solo work. We have a great conversation, complete with eggs and three year olds going to school. We discuss the heart of the artist, creativity, the church, contemporary Christian music, the kinds of movies he’d like to see, and his multiple projects. Learn more at www.johnvandeusen.com. Please support John and his wonderful work. To me, he is a modern David, who lives his faith authentically before the Face of God.

Today Dr. Thomas Millay joins us to talk about one of the most fascinating people in history, Soren Kierkegaard. We enter the “world” of Kierkegaard through his ideas about reading. This may seem trivial or unimportant, but actually, this is one of the most exemplary topics for our age. What is the purpose of reading? Do you read the right way? Do you think you’re a better person because you’ve read a lot, have substantial knowledge, and know the right answers? Or, do you think you are “less” of a person because you barely read, struggle to understand the Christian faith, and are not as interested in books or ideas? Kierkegaard will set us straight! Along the way, Dr. Millay will share one of the most practical and inspiring definitions of love you’ve ever heard. Listen to this episode and then go get Dr. Millay’s book “You Must Change Your Life.” But, you must promise to read it SLOWLY.
Dr. Thomas Millay is the pastor of First Christian Church in Goldsboro, NC. He is also the Senior Research Fellow at the Hong Kierkegaard Library, St. Olaf College. He loves to study the Bible and believes prayer has the power to change lives.

Today’s guest is Professor Nancy Pearcey.** We talk about her latest book The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes. She traces the history of ideas surrounding masculinity, while at the same time encouraging men to be better husbands, fathers, and friends. We talk about her own tragic past, how she found healing, and how to deal with toxic men. She also debunks modern myths surrounding masculinity with the best research and data. Men, women, and the church need to hear her message.
Pearcey’s earlier books include Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality, The Soul of Science, Saving Leonardo, Finding Truth, and two ECPA Gold Medallion Award Winners: How Now Shall We Live (coauthored with Harold Fickett and Chuck Colson) and Total Truth. Her books have been translated into 19 languages. She is professor and scholar in residence at Houston Christian University. A former agnostic, Pearcey has spoken at universities such as Princeton, Stanford, USC, and Dartmouth. She has been quoted in The New Yorker and Newsweek, highlighted as one of the five top women apologists by Christianity Today, and hailed in The Economist as "America's pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual."
**We apologize, we had technical difficulties throughout the episode, and the feed for Sam’s cohost was lost. But, we managed to preserve this version of our conversation between Sam and Nancy for your consideration and enjoyment. We are certain this will not detract from the wisdom you will glean from Professor Pearcey.

Transposition, C. S. Lewis, evil enchantment, and seeing the world how it really is. There’s too much good stuff on this episode to describe here—you’ve just got to hear it for yourself. And by the end, you’ll want to become a recovering modern, too. Dr. Jason Baxter, who is a professor at Notre Dame, author, and speaker, joins us today for a lively conversation about truly seeing the world and yourself—and loving both. He wrote the bestselling book “The Medieval Mind of C. S. Lewis: How Great Books Shaped a Great Mind” https://www.amazon.com/Medieval-Mind-C-S-Lewis/dp/1514001640/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1694012944&sr=8-1

Do you know your purpose? And I mean your PURPOSE, not the tiny thing you decided you wanted to do or be, or not what someone else is trying to make you do or become. But, what is the PURPOSE that has been built into you, which you cannot escape, no matter how hard you try? Dr. Hans Boersma joins us today to talk about the Beatific Vision. What is this? It is the “magnet” that is drawing you right now towards something greater than you could ever imagine. It is the happiness and fulfillment for which you were made.
Dr. Boersma is the Saint Benedict Servants of Christ Chair at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Wisconsin. He has also served as the J. I. Packer Professor of Theology at Regent College. We talk about his book “Seeing God: The Beatific Vision in Christian Tradition.” Learn more about his amazing work at www.hansboersma.org.

The Rev’d Andrew Lazo joins us today to talk about C. S. Lewis’s book “Till We Have Faces.” We help you understand the background for the book, its setting, and some of its major themes. We believe (as did Lewis himself) that “Till We Have Faces” is his greatest book. You will learn the connection between joy and love, the overarching theme of all Lewis’s books, and how to rethink your “ugly” parts.
Andrew is one of the co-hosts on the podcast Pints with Jack, he is an internationally known speaker and writer, an expert on C. S. Lewis and the Inklings, and a priest in the Episcopal Church. He is currently working on a groundbreaking book about “Till We Have Faces.” You can learn more about him at his website www.mythoflove.net and you can watch his lecture at the Wade Center at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR81Mz58prI. The idea of "Dad" runs deep, in fact, it might be one of the most fundamental things about us. But what is a dad? What is a dad for? What does he do? And what is the difference between a father and a mother? Today's special guest is Dr. Scott Keith, who wrote a book called "Being Dad: Father as a Picture of God's Grace." Dr. Keith offers a beautiful and moving portrait of a father, one which we desperately need to hear. After you listen to this episode, we encourage you to get a copy of the book for yourself (link below).
Dr. Scott Keith is the Executive Director of 1517 @1517org . He has also been a professor. He is the co-host of The Thinking Fellows Podcast and a contributor to 1517 and Christ Hold Fast. He has a doctorate from Foundation House Oxford, studying under Dr. James Nestingen. PLEASE check out the ministry of 1517 and its many wonderful podcasts, which include "through the Bible" shows. There is much debate surrounding artificial intelligence, AI, and many are cautious about its so-called benefits. But our guest today, Dr. Mark Vernon, brings a more hopeful message: AI is an opportunity for humans to re-learn what it means to be human, to create as humans, and to have intelligence as humans. We talk about a recent video he posted about AI (see below), and unpack what this means for all of us, including those fields that might feel threatened by AI, such as marketers, educators, artists, writers, and so forth. Toward the end, Mike Stanczak and I make specific applications to people of faith.
Dr. Vernon @PlatosPodcasts is a psychotherapist with a private practice in London, and he is the author of many books. He writes on friendship, philosophy, spiritual intelligence, Owen Barfield (the friend of C.S. Lewis), Dante, and living in the modern world. His works have been published by the BBC, Aeon, Church Times, and The Idler. He has a degree in physics, two in theology, and a PhD in Philosophy. He has also been a priest in the Church of England.

On today's episode, Dr. Tom Price helps us to understand what true freedom is. We start by learning how our idea of freedom was corrupted. Along the way, we discuss the "gift" nature of humans and the kind of world in which we find ourselves.
Here are some of the reading recommendations Dr. Price has for those who wish to explore more about this subject:
"Creation, Metaphysics, and Ethics" by David Burrell in the "Faith and Philosophy Journal": https://place.asburyseminary.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1827&context=faithandphilosophy
"The Generosity of Creation" by David Schindler
"The God of Faith and Reason" by Robert Sokolowski
"The Reality of Time and the Existence of God" by David Braine
"Begotten or Made?" by Oliver O'Donovan
"Dionysian Power" by Hans Boersma in Touchstone Magazine

Jack is back! And he's going to talk with us about the divine technology of resistance, in the context of artificial intelligence (AI). What can an old, worn tool say to you? When is the last time you walked outside without any shoes on? Do you know what the dung beetle can teach you? If you're out of touch with creation, then you're out of touch with yourself--and God. We think that "sanitized" is always better, but what if we're wrong? Jack Baumgartner is an artist, farmer, poet, woodcarver, storyteller, musician, and thinker. He has more than a little wisdom about our times and how you can stay grounded--literally. You can see Jack's amazing artwork (and plenty of his farm!) on his Instagram account @baumwerkj.

"The kids are not alright." Emilee VerDuin joins us today to talk about Visionary Christian Art, Christianity, and culture. She brings a rich, yet unique perspective that you might be not used to hearing. She is fighting against what the material 'vision' of reality has done to us, by seeing the world through faith. She uses her art to capture what she sees. We look at some of her art in this episode, talk about Jordan Peterson and Carl Jung, and consider what the Orthodox Church can teach us. We end with a note to pastors and church leaders about how to reach the next generation in our chaotic world.

Our culture struggles with defining what a woman or man is, because we do not understand what a human is in the first place. Our friend Dr. Tom Price returns to the show to talk about this crucial question. Starting with the nature of Christ, he helps us to understand the heights and depths of ourselves, what is known as biblical anthropology. Not only that, but we learn about our purpose, how to order our lives the right way, and what to do when we don't know what to do. You'll probably need to listen to this episode a few times in order to glean all of its riches.

There’s much more to the household than you realize, in fact, it is a pattern of the whole cosmos. If you desire to be healthy and whole, live out your faith effectively, and properly care for those around you, then you need to see what the connection between the household, the cosmos, and your life is. Today’s guest is Rev. C. R. Wiley, whose books include “In the House of Tom Bombadil” and “The Household and the War for the Cosmos,” which we discuss on today’s episode. C. R. Wiley is a pastor in Washington, he has been a college professor, real estate investor, a home improvement contractor, and a writer and illustrator. He is also one of the hosts of the Theology Pugcast. Also, we’ve got a special guest host today, Pastor Mike Stanczak, who helps us dig into this conversation.

What do you get when you mix Chris Farley with Jason and the Argonauts? Meet Jason Farley! (Without all the tragedy of both characters, of course.) Jason is a comedy writer, poet, podcast host (Knox Unplugged) and all around adventurer, trying to reclaim the golden globe, I mean golden fleece, from Hollywood. So far, Jason’s adventures are worthy of lore, or should I say, LOOR, as in LOOR.TV. That’s right, Jason Farley is the mind behind the new television platform LOOR.TV, which is seeking to host all the tv stories that Hollywood doesn’t want you to see. Today, our topic is another one of Jason’s interests: Belly Laughs. Specifically, what is the place of humor in the Christian story, and why do Christians need to recapture the power of levity? This naturally leads us to talking about G.K. Chesterton. And along the way, Louis engages Jason with a discussion about race in movies and media. It’s a hot one today! If you want to learn how you can support LOOR.TV and subscribe, go to http://loor.tv

Jack Baumgartner is an amazing artist, farmer, poet, woodcarver, storyteller, and musician. He recently shared a video of himself reading a poem in which he said he was was no longer a Christian. Rather than jump to conclusions, we decided to talk with Jack to hear his heart behind the poem. In this episode, Sam and Jack take a winding journey through faith, what it means to live in a God-created world, how to be whole and integrated, the meaning of sin and failure, the meaning of Jack's art, and Jack's ongoing call to follow God. There are many treasures in this episode, please listen with an open mind and see what God is saying to you. You can see Jack's amazing artwork (and plenty of his farm!) on his Instagram account @baumwerkj. The music in this episode was written and performed by Jack Baumgartner. The song at the beginning is "Through the Windy" and the song at the end is "John Moriarty." His original poem (which you can watch him read on Instagram) is "The Oxen are Dead and the Smoke is Rising."

Why did Jesus suddenly ascend into heaven 40 days after the resurrection? Why do some Christians and churches celebrate Ascension Day every year? Today we talked to Dr. David Bryan, who is a New Testament scholar at Trinity International University. His passion and interest include understanding what is going on with the ascension of Jesus. He shows us how Jesus's ascension helps us find our true place in this world--because Jesus is at His true place over the world. We discover the world is a much fuller and more wonderful place than most realize. Dr. Bryan's research interests include the Gospel of Luke and the parables of Jesus. He has been a church planter in Madrid, Spain; he currently serves as Associate Pastor at Lakeview Presbyterian Church in Vernon Hills, IL. If you’re interested in taking Bible or worldview courses online, here is a link for the Certificates at TEDS, where Dr. Bryan teaches.

Dr. Tom Price joins us today to talk about the nature of EVERYTHING! What kind of world do we live in? What kind of creatures are we? How are we to live life properly so we don't damage ourselves (or other people)? This is officially part 1 of our journey into the Cosmic Battle with Tom Price. He begins to paint a vivid picture of the Christian vision of reality, lifting the veil just a little so we can glimpse awesome and eternal things. Don't miss this episode, and anticipate future episodes with Dr. Price when we discuss the nature of human beings specifically and the true nature of freedom.

Today we speak with Rankin Wilbourne about the forgotten doctrine of the Bible, union with Christ. Rankin serves as the Discipleship Pastor at City Church in Evansville, Indiana. He wrote an award winning book titled “Union with Christ: The Way to Know and Enjoy God.” If your life feels shallow, meaningless, or fake, we encourage you to consider what Rankin has to say. If you feel powerless, hopeless, or afraid, then this episode is for you. And if you’d like to enjoy God more, you’ll find this episode very helpful. Why has the church neglected this doctrine? How can you benefit from it? Rankin, Louis, and Sam talk about the vital importance of union with Christ and how it’s the core of our relationship with God.

Annie came to the BS Studio and talked with us about integrity in worship. She speaks about the worship leader’s heart, how to prepare yourself for worship, and dealing with distractions. We touch on Olivia Newton-John, Taylor Swift, and Tina Turner. As usual, Louis and Sam go on some wonderful tangents, talking about favorite musicians, the impact of Christianity on secular music—yes, you read that right—and why you should skip zoom and just go to church. It’s a lively and inspiring conversation, one you need to hear before you go to worship service this Sunday!

What does it mean for God to be God? If God displayed His glory, what would it look like? What would God do? How would God behave toward sinners? Today’s guest is Dr. Steve Bryan, who is a New Testament Scholar at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Dr. Bryan takes us into the Gospel of John and shows us for God to be God, we have to look at the cross. The cross, as Dr. Bryan explains, is part of the larger story in the Bible of what God is doing. We explore themes from Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the Psalms. We consider the “I AM” statements in John, as well as the predicated “I AM” statements. We also discuss the atonement, substitution, and the various stumbles of Peter. Dr. Bryan is author of a forthcoming commentary on John’s Gospel (Baker Academic), as well as the author of “Cultural Identity and the Purposes of God: A Biblical Theology of Ethnicity, Nationality, and Race” (Crossway). Dr. Bryan served as a missionary in Ethiopia for 23 years in various teaching and leadership roles. We are very honored to have him on the show today.

The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate Cinderella story, and, you can think of it as the True Cinderella Story. From the beginning, people have raised objections to the reality of the resurrection. There are seven major objections to the truth of Jesus's rising from the dead. In this episode, we list these objections and then answer them. We believe there is adequate proof for you to believe in the resurrection--and become a part of the ultimate Cinderella story yourself.

Nathan Harrison joins us today. Nathan works for The Navigators, which is a ministry that helps people grow through life-to-life discipleship and creating spiritual generations. We talk about slaying the dragon in the church. Above all, Nate wants you to know how much you matter. God has gifted you, so don’t shelve yourself. Nate starts by sharing how he became a Christian, and how The Navigators found him in crisis. We learn what The Navigators is, the difference between discipleship and disciple-making, and the need for church pastors to be discipled themselves. Nate shares with us what the dragon in the modern church is and what we need to do to slay it. We discuss his international work in Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya, and learn what God is doing in the church in Africa. Nate tells us the need, passion, and spiritual sensitivity in the international church is much greater than in the US, and he tells us why. Then we discuss how distraction in the US church leads to ineffectiveness. We note the differences between radical individualism and communal life. We talk about memetic motivation, the need to simplify the church, learning less (and applying more), and prioritizing the Holy Spirit.

Today we discuss the Oscar award winning movie 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis. We talk about the cultural significance of the movie and look to G.K. Chesterton to help us understand the 'fairytale' world it creates. We also check-in with the book of Ecclesiastes and note the major parallels.

We have no shortage of pastors and leaders who have fallen, whether into sin, great moral failure, or crime. Why is this? There are telltale signs a leader is going astray, do you know them? Why do Christian pastors and leaders fail? What can we do about it? Also, should these leaders be restored? On today’s episode, we talk about all these questions. We have words for fallen leaders who wish to be restored. We also have some counsel for the church, family, and victims associated with the fallen pastor. Our goal with this episode is to challenge the BS, offer personal insights, and help leaders avoid these tragic behaviors and errors we see. We want people to learn from our lives, walk in the truth, humble themselves, and become whole. We also want to minister to the hurting church. While we don’t have all the answers, we’re doing our best to fight against this increasing trend.

Kevin Halloran is today’s guest and he talks with us about his book “When Prayer Is a Struggle.” This is a wonderful book that encourages, inspires, and offers practical help to get you praying. We talk about the ‘why’ of prayer and discuss common obstacles. Faith and love are foundational to prayer, and Kevin shows us why. We talk about feeling too guilty to pray, being distracted, and making your prayer time more organized. Kevin provides several strategies and resources for prayer, such as journaling, prayer apps, and Martin Luther’s little book on prayer. Community is also a key to prayer, and we give some examples. Kevin is thoughtful, humble, and wise, and you’ll benefit greatly from this conversation and his new book. To learn more about him and to get some FREE resources, go to https://www.kevinhalloran.net. Something awesome happened at Asbury University on February 8, 2023, which has continued to today, February 22. Some are calling it a revival, while those at Asbury consider it to be an awakening. On today’s episode, we talk about Asbury and the differences between revival and renewal. Most importantly, we discuss how we should respond to this amazing event of our time. We consult the ‘experts’ as well as offer some opinions from our own experiences. We give plenty of caution for those who are calling Christians to ‘duplicate’ this event in their own contexts, while at the same time, encouraging the ordinary believer to persevere in normal Christian obedience—keeping an eye on what only God can do.

Old Testament scholar Dr. Ingrid Faro is back for another deep dive into Genesis! This time, she talks about our needs and desires. From Genesis, she demonstrates how our needs and desires are not bad, but we must learn how to discern what is the best ‘fit’ for them. Maybe you’ve been told your whole life by the church or well-meaning (or controlling!) adults that your desires are bad, after this episode, you’ll gain a new appreciation for how God made you—and hopefully, learn to steer away from those who seek to shame you. Dr. Faro’s new book is titled “Demystifying Evil: A Biblical and Personal Exploration,” and will be released later this year from IVP.

Most have wrestled with the problem of evil and suffering in this world. Perhaps, you’ve questioned God because of evil. Or, maybe your experience of evil has led you to do things you regret. How do we deal with evil? How do we face it? How do we forgive? How do we stop contributing to the evil tide all around us? Dr. Ingrid Faro takes us on a journey into the book of Genesis, the Ancient Near East culture, and her own story of suffering, in order to help us endure (and thrive!) in this life. We talk about what it means to be made in the image of God, the first sin, and how satan pounces on us. She tells stories of abuse, trauma, failure, and homelessness. We spend some time discussing shame, failure, and guilt, along with purpose, calling, and grace. She helps us turn around our ashes into beauty. If you’ve never heard an Old Testament scholar open up the Bible, this is the place to begin! We were so encouraged by this conversation, and we can’t wait for you to hear it. Dr. Faro’s new book will be coming out later this year; it’s called “Demystifying Evil: A Biblical and Personal Exploration.”

Today we talk with licensed counselor and mental health expert Aaron McMahon, whose practice is called Steeple Counseling. We talk about multiple faith and mental health issues people face today. Aaron lets us know what it takes to be a counselor, the underlying issues that COVID exposed, and the cycles of conflict people get caught in. He addresses the question “Can God help me?” and some of the upheaval most modern people deal with. Then we dig into Christians who are suspicious of psychology, why we become like what we worship, what we were made to reflect, and being discerning. We emphasize how we must embrace our limitations, as well as the importance of self-care. Then we move to why people get stuck, understanding our true identities, and why the church is crucial to your mental health care plan. Aaron also talks about the importance of a wholistic approach to our lives. Louis gets us talking about biblical counseling vs. Christian counseling, counseling non-Christians, and seeking a mission field in life. Sam asks about getting past failure, and the bumper sticker answers people hide behind. Aaron gives some of the bumper stickers he sees, lets us know how we can help each other, and his burden for people as a counselor. This is a lively conversation, so enjoy!

Happy Bump Day! We are excited to have Pastor Mike Stanczak on our show today to talk about something called the Negative World. Why are some Christians really divided? Why did some Christians embrace Trump and others condemn him? Why are Christian elites starting to look more like cultural liberals? In a now famous First Things article titled, "The Three Worlds of Evangelicalism," Aaron Renn summarizes our current cultural moment by helping us to understand where we came from. Renn maps out the 'positive world,' 'neutral world,' and 'negative world.' He also demonstrates how Christians were received by each of these cultural contexts. Today, we find ourselves in the negative world, which is hostile to Christianity, although Christians haven't quite figured out how to position themselves. Enter Pastor Mike Stanczak of Trinity Community Church in Libertyville, IL. Mike is one of the most thoughtful pastors we know, who has one hand on the pulse of the culture and another hand on the pulse of God. Mike loves the gospel and preaches the Bible, yet he also understands the cultural dynamics we are living in. Mike helps us unpack Renn's article during the first half of the show, and then in the second half, Mike maps out a way forward for the church based on the book of Acts. So, put your thinking caps on, grab your Bible, and let's go!

Happy Bump Day! Lt. Col. KJ Johnson served in the Marines for twenty years before joining the C.S. Lewis Institute in Chicago. He is the director of CSLI Chicago and leads the year long mentoring program. KJ says Jesus did not tell the Twelve to go 'evangelize' or go make 'Christians,' but Jesus commanded them, “Go and make disciples.” Most likely, discipleship is the missing ingredient from your life. But, what is a disciple? How do you do it? Is it just for the spiritual elites? KJ walks us through some of the myths about discipleship, gives practical steps for growing as a disciple, and inspires everyone to examine his or her faith. If you really want to get rid of BS faith, then you need genuine discipleship in your life.

Happy Bump Day! Today we have Aaron Subich on the show to talk about porn, addiction, and shame. Aaron Subich (MA, LPC, ASOP, CMAT, CSAT) is a licensed therapist who helps people face their porn and sex addictions. His compassion and hope for those who struggle comes through in this episode. He helps us better understand what addiction is truly about and what it takes to deal with it. He specifically speaks about porn, dopamine, and shame. He suggests that porn addiction is really about our lack of ability to have a meaningful connection with ourselves. You don't want to miss this dynamic, eyeopening, and helpful episode.

We are excited to share this special interview with Tom Olson. Tom is the pastor at The Orchard Church outside of Chicago. When Tom was a kid, he lost his younger brother to cancer. This tragic event marked and shaped his life. We wanted Tom to share with us how he got through that loss, how he deals with it still today, and what others can learn from his story. Tom not only talks about his brother and the family dynamics around the loss, but also he gives us a powerful tool for grieving (and helping others during their grief). As you may know, Louis also lost a family member when he was a teenager. His dad was shot in a drug deal gone bad. Between Louis and Tom, you'll discover true wisdom and insight into handling the tragic brushstrokes of life. This is a great episode to share with those dealing with loss and understanding the grieving process. To learn more about Tom Olson, go to https://www.theorchardefc.org/about/our-leaders/.

It’s the end of the year! In our 52nd episode, we’ve got one message for you…DON’T HOLD ONTO GOD IN THE NEW YEAR! We talk about a story from CS Lewis about a Diver and then discuss Mary holding onto Jesus. We go over the doctrine in the Bible called “union with Christ” and consider life from the “light” side and “dark” side. What did the Apostle Paul mean when he said he was "filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions"? We close by digging into Spiderman: No Way Home and the metaverse to help us string together this web of ideas! Let go of God in the New Year in order to let Him go in your life.

Today, we talk about what it means to love your neighbor at Christmas.

In today’s episode, we present “The Screwtape Christmas Letters.” The Screwtape Letters is one of C.S. Lewis’s most popular books, lifting the veil on the training program of the demonic world. Well, what if Screwtape and fiends are still up to their ancient tricks? Do you have a better explanation for all the Christmas chaos? See if you recognize any of these satanic strategies in your own life. Be on your guard against these sorts of devilish attacks on your family and friends. Kevin DeYoung recently reviewed "The Case for Christian Nationalism" by Stephen Wolfe in an article for The Gospel Coalition, called "The Rise of Right Wing Wokeism." DeYoung's article is long, but very good. Louis and Sam take some time to break down the article and discuss these important political issues of our time. They talk about patriotism vs. nationalism, the 'Winsome' debate, nations and ethnicity, the nature of the church, protestant political theory throughout history, Aaron Wren's 'Negative World,' how the 'right' is adopting the mentality of the 'left,' the (truly) biggest problems our nation faces, and the way forward. So, grab a pipe, sit back, and enjoy!
Here's the Gospel Coalition article: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/reviews/christian-nationalism-wolfe/

If you feel like something is missing in life, maybe 'discipleship' is the answer. To be a disciple of Jesus is to learn how to live out the life He has placed in you. Louis and Sam talk about discipleship and give a handy strategy for it. You can use this strategy in your own life or to disciple someone else. Jesus told us to go and make disciples from all nations, so we better get busy!

Louis and Sam follow up on their last episode on deconstructing the faith. Are you deconstructing your faith? Does the Bible speak into deconstruction? The book of Hebrews makes a very important contribution to the conversation that you need to hear. The guys refer to the six pillars of deconstruction. Following the lead of Hebrews, they show that you have to learn how to process the ‘milk’ doctrines before moving onto the ‘meat’ doctrines. They also share what you should do if your church or church leadership is going down the wrong path.

What does it mean to deconstruct your faith? Is it good or bad? Today, Louis and Sam talk about the various nuances behind faith deconstruction. They talk about its origins, the six pillars of deconstruction, the things in our culture that make it possible, its biblical basis, and how to help someone who says they are deconstructing. They also give three cautions to those who are deconstructing their faith: don't let your deconstruction turn into apostasy; be very wary of your ego; and make sure the reason 'why' you are doing it takes precedence over 'how' or 'what' you're doing. We hope you learn as much as we did from this relevant conversation.

Does it ever seem like Christians have BS faith? There are certain slogans and cliches you will hear if you hang around the church long enough. Today, Louis and Sam expose ten of these bumper stickers. While there's a seed of truth to each of them, ultimately, these bumper stickers lead us away from the heart of God. See if you recognize any of these bumper stickers in your own life: 1. When you feel this way, then simply claim this truth. 2. I’m just a horrible sinner! 3. My needs don’t matter as much as yours. 4. It’s okay if I don’t get validation. 5. That will never happen to me / I can’t believe I did that. 6. A true Christian will get as nearly perfect as possible. 7. I was meant to change the world. 8. All I need is God and my Bible. 9. I confessed to God, so that is enough. 10. I’ve been so good, so I deserve to be a little bad.

Have you ever wondered what pastors do all week? Do they just work for one hour? We surveyed real pastors and asked them what they wanted the congregation to know. We talk about some of their real thoughts and struggles. At Bumper Sticker Faith, we want to get beneath the surface and help both congregations and pastors alike to have more empathy for each other. We love the church and want to help it move forward as one.

Answering this question would be a game-changer, right? While Sam attempts to present the various 'proofs' for the existence of God, Louis chimes in with some wise words of caution. They both agree that God has made Himself known to all people at all times and in all places. Yes, God does exist, but not like you might think. And, there is a type of knowing that's way more important than the scientific way. We hope this encourages you! Also, in the episode, they mentioned a book by Gavin Ortlund titled, "Why God Makes Sense in a World that Doesn't." Check it out!

Life these days is getting weird, don’t you think? And the last thing we need right now it to be at a distance from God. The fastest way back to sanity is prayer. But how do you do it? Is God happy with my prayers? Am I doing it the right way? What do others think of my prayers? Today, Louis and Sam help you to pray. They teach you a method to pray that is simple to understand and can help you start praying today.

Louis and Sam break down weakness for you. They give a definition and provide examples of areas in life where we often experience weakness. Then then talk about culture's typical response to weakness, as well as the church's. They then go to the famous passage in the Bible about weakness, 2 Corinthians 12. Here, Paul boasts in his weakness, discusses the thorn in his flesh, and resolves to rely on God's strength. The guys point out that God's strength is a qualitative difference, rather than a quantitative one. Sam draws attention to a poem by George Herbert, called 'The Pulley.' And Louis addresses those who want to stay weak. Weakness can be defined as 'alien strength' or, probably better, 'supernatural strength.' Boom! Weakness is supernatural strength!

The guys talk about something that might at first seem obscure, but actually is one of the most relatable topics, "Theology of Glory" vs. "Theology of the Cross." This has been a HUGE lesson for me over the years and has brought me much comfort and understanding of how reality works. Louis and Sam give some definitions, then jump into Isaiah 6:5, the so-called sin of "unclean lips." What does this mean? Then they explore a famous quote from Carl Jung: "To this day God is the name by which I designate all things which cross my willful path violently and recklessly, all things which upset my subjective views, plans and intentions and change the course of my life for better or worse." From this, they discern that God is most interested in the health of your soul and, as Louis put it, will gladly "shake the loaded gun from your hand," if you're in danger. God will appear rough at times in order to help us put Him back in His rightful place in our lives. This is an important conversation about how to see the world right-side-up, instead of calling 'evil' good and 'good' evil. So, live in the storm, and let it do its work.

"Self-pity is our worst enemy!" said Helen Keller. Today, the guys talk about the Dragon of Self-Pity. They start by giving a psychological definition. Self-pity can be described as a negative inflation. Then they try to figure out the archetype that fuels self-pity. After, they describe the two main ideas behind self-pity, where a person gets his or her worth and how a person plays the victim. It's a vicious cycle that's often used to justify sin. Be aware of falling in the PIT of self-PITy, because it is a self pit! They talk about self-advocacy and taking responsibility, as well as how to laugh at yourself and not take yourself too seriously. Most important, don't take your self-pity too seriously, though you must learn to recognize it. God can forgive you for however you've fallen short. The guys finish off by giving some warning signs of self-pity, as well as steps to take to "train your dragon" of self-pity. Good luck with this dragon and let us know how we can help!

You can't do life on your own. If you want to aim to be the best version of yourself, or even just get yourself out of the pit, then you need these six kinds of people in your life. Most of the time, we focus on just one or two areas of our lives, but humans are much more complicated than that! Consider these six areas of life and ask yourself if you have these kinds of people helping you and holding you accountable. Who are they? They are: Mental Mike, Let's Go Louis, Time-out Tim, Get Fit Griffin, Armchair Aaron, and Jester Jim. Having these six people in your life will help you get beyond Bumper Sticker Faith.

Are Christians called to be nice? That's the question Louis and Sam talk about in episode 17. What does it mean to be nice? Was Jesus nice? And if we're not called to be nice, then what the heck are we called to be?? Here's a hint: 'nice' could mean you're hiding something!

Happy Bump Day! Louis and Sam put on the BS table the question, "Do you need to forgive yourself?" While some say only God can forgive, the guys have a different view. Take a look at your life: have you truly forgiven yourself? Do you think you've sinned too much to be forgiven? Is your lack of self-forgiveness coming out "sideways" in your life? Louis and Sam examine why people tend not to forgive themselves and give a recipe for self-forgiveness at the end. They even go so far as to suggest that failure doesn't disqualify you for ministry, but finally qualifies you for ministry, as this is the pattern in Scripture.

Happy Bump Day! Louis and Sam respond to a listener comment about transgender issues. Instead of the typical Christian approach of automatically arguing against transgender issues, the guys first 'steel man' the transgender argument, putting forward the strongest arguments FOR the transgender movement. Afterward, they take a look at each of these steel man arguments and show show how these arguments fall short. It's crucial for us to respond with both GRACE and TRUTH when it comes to this issue, for everyone's sake. This is part one; part two will be released next Wednesday.

In episode 13 of Bumper Sticker Faith, Louis and Sam consider the idea of perfection when it comes to fighting addiction. This is a "bonus" episode in their Porn Clown series. They talk about the famous verses in Matthew 5 about looking lustfully at a person and then chopping off your hand or plucking out your eye! Listen to what they have to say about this! Chris Rock might have given the joke, but Will Smith delivered the 'punch' line! In episode 12, Louis and Sam talk about what happened at the Oscars this past Sunday. Louis gives insight on the meaning of a slap in the African American community; Sam talks about the concept of 'shadow' and how it helps us process what happened. An important lesson we can learn from this Oscar moment is to be aware of the forces at work within each one of us, whether we realize it or not. Feel free to comment and be sure to share! In episode 11 of Bumper Sticker Faith, Louis and Sam (almost) finish their series about how to deal with unwanted porn addiction. This is the fifth of six episodes: CONFESS, LISTEN, OPEN UP TO PAIN, WORSHIP and NEEDS. What does the video game Frogger have to do with fighting porn? Watch to find out! The guys talk about our legitimate NEEDS. Some may be surprised to hear that our sexual needs are good and valid; however, we need to meet our valid needs in a legitimate way. Trying to meet our sexual needs with pornography is not a valid way. In fact, to do so is destructive. The guys show us what's going on behind our valid needs and how to meet them in a healthy, legitimate way. It's important to take all five episodes into consideration when thinking about this last one, as all five are necessary in overcoming addiction.
If you're struggling in this area, the guys want to give you permission to put shame aside and come to the BS table with them! They acknowledge how our fear of being seen as weak often keeps us from opening up and asking for help. This series provides a more thorough understanding of what it means to fight porn, in part loosely based on a comedy sketch by Key & Peele, called Psycho Clown, which you can find here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngk3VX405GE.

In episode 10 of Bumper Sticker Faith, Louis and Sam continue to talk about how to deal with unwanted porn addiction. This is the fourth of six episodes in this series. After we open up to pain, as we heard in the last episode, we need to worship. The guys discuss the meaning of the word 'worship' and its connection to a porn addiction. Louis tells stories of powerful worship experiences in prison and Sam brings our attention to Paul and Silas in Acts 16. The guys give clarity to the 'wolf on each shoulder' analogy and give us permission to worship God in our shame. Hypocrites are called to worship God, too! Remember, breaking a porn addiction is not possible without proper worship.

In episode 9 of Bumper Sticker Faith, Louis and Sam continue to talk about how to deal with unwanted porn addiction. This is the third of (hopefully) six episodes. The next step is to "open up yourself to pain," rather than continue to soothe it with unwanted addiction, such as porn. The guys kick around the ancient practice of circumcision and discuss what it had to do with God's removal of protection, shame, and identity, so that his people would seek their comfort, honor, and purpose from Him. Louis and Sam puzzle over whether porn addiction is always rooted in pain or not. They encourage us to seek professional help if we're unable to discover and/or deal with our wounding within. There's no shame in that! This episode will challenge the way you normally think about the cause of porn addiction, so get ready to blow off your bumper stickers and dig deeper in your life.

In episode 8 of Bumper Sticker Faith, Louis and Sam continue to talk about how to deal with unwanted porn addiction. This is the second of (hopefully) six episodes. The next step is to "listen" to what's going on inside you, being curious about our unwanted behavior. We need both an on-the-ground view of our lives AND a skybox view of our lives. Porn is a symptom of something else going wrong inside of you. We are called to examine ourselves each day and the guys give us an approach to doing this. This episode could be huge for you, as you try to break out of bondage to porn.

In episode 7 of Bumper Sticker Faith, Louis and Sam begin a series on how to deal with unwanted porn addiction. This is the first of (hopefully) six episodes. If you're struggling in this area, the guys want to give you permission to put shame aside and come to the BS table with them. They acknowledge how our fear of being seen as weak often keeps us from opening up and asking for help. This episode provides a more thorough understanding of what it means to confess, based on a comedy sketch by Key & Peele, called Psycho Clown, which you can find here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngk3VX405GE. Confessing your sins is more than just saying you're sorry to God--that's the BS way. The guys help us understand what true confession looks like. Feel free to comment and be sure to share! Thanks for listening.
In today's episode, Louis and Sam talk about your soul! They discuss something called the "coffin test" in order to help us see the value of the soul. Ironically, most Christians don't think about their soul too much and maybe don't realize how important it is to give your soul what it wants (as opposed to what your ego wants). Sam imagines Louis in a coffin; Louis imagines Sam with some tattoos. Take some time to think about the value of your soul, because it's worth more than the whole world! Feel free to comment and be sure to share! Thanks for listening.
Louis and Sam talk about death row. Louis shares stories of his time in a maximum security prison alongside of those on death row. He personally knew dozens of people put to death via capital punishment; to this day, he still is in contact with guys on death row. Louis and Sam discuss what all of us can learn from these memories. This is a moving episode you won't want to miss. Feel free to comment and be sure to share! Thanks for listening.
Louis and Sam talk about confession. When do you have to come clean with another person? Is it okay to confess just to God? The guys break it down, Bumper Sticker style, minus the BS. We hope this helps you if you're struggling...you're not alone! Remember, you've got to get smaller in order to become bigger. Feel free to comment and be sure to share! Thanks for listening.

Louis and Sam talk about love...and reveal love's missing ingredient! If you aren't experiencing the kind of love you'd like to, then you may need to add this ingredient--truth. They look at cultural definitions of love, as well as popular versions of love in the church. Sam brings up Soren Kierkegaard and Louis points to 1 Corinthians 13 and tells some prison stories--all that you'd expect from these guys.
Louis and Sam talk about football...and discuss why NFL stands for Necessary for Life! They had some fun showing how life works better when viewed through the lens of football. You need a team behind you!
Louis and Sam talk about racism, especially as it applies to Christians and the church. Louis shares some of his personal experiences with racism and gives a model for empathy. The guys share how we won't be able to find a common ground until we find a higher ground.
