Something that has been majorly pivotal for me as a business owner is "systematisation". I used to be the ‘typical’ business owner, micromanaging lots of different tasks each day, playing many different roles within the business… This resulted in me becoming overworked, underpaid, stressed out and ultimately resenting my business because it became a major source of stress in my life.
On top of that, because everything depended on me so heavily, I became a major bottleneck to the growth of the business. Fast forward to today & I no longer work "IN" that business, I work "ON" it. I have implemented great systems & hired great people to manage & run those systems (systematisation + delegation = automation). FYI: the business I am referring to is SPM.
This has given me the financial & time freedom to focus on other projects that I had been putting off for years. It has also allowed me to be able to build other businesses, have more flexibility to travel (I'm currently in Downtown Dubai writing this email to you - a big change from the midlands of Ireland lol) and to be able to spend more time with friends & family.
The reality is that most people who start a business are good at 1 or maybe 2 things - usually they are skilled at doing the work AKA providing the service. The carpenter goes out on his own to build kitchens because he knows he is a good carpenter… The digital marketer goes out on her own to start an agency because she knows she is a good digital marketer… The same with, the bookkeeper, the landscaper etc… They all start their own business because they are skilled at something. BUT!.... Just because you’re skilled at providing a service does not mean that you’ll be able to build a successful & profitable business (as many of you reading this already know).
This is exactly why many people end up creating a "job" that depends heavily on them. It end up becoming a major source of stress & financial worry instead of a building a business that they enjoy, that can run & grow independently of them. They have no work/life balance, time management is off the scale, nothing is structured or organised.

How To Go From Working Musician To Owning A Music School In Scotland. In the third episode of the TDE podcast, we sit down with Barry Carroll, founder of "One Lad Music Services" in Aberdeen, Scotland. Barry started out as a working musician in Ireland, then moving on to Salou in Spain to play music in Irish bars (where he also met his now wife) before flying over to play music in the United States where he met the Foo Fighters. Barry ended moving to Scotland where his wife's family are from. In April 2021 Barry decided to set up his own music school. Today his music school has several tutors, dozens of students and provides music tuition services to students of all levels both locally, nationally & internationally.
