Podboard100 sits down with the worlds most successful podcasters from the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia. We learn about the people behind your favourite podcasts and what lessons any aspiring podcasters can take from the journey that got them from episode 1 to charting on the podboard100.
Executive Producer of the Spittin' Chiclets - A Barstool pod that presents as a lifestyle brand, which I’m not necessarily saying is infectious even to a non Hockey fan but… Chiclets has grown from a hockey podcast to a hangout for , and I quote, shooting shit, locker room style
We talk about Tom Greene, 4 hour episodes, and what its like living the dream from going from a so/so hockey player, to local sports journalist, to hanging out with his hero's as an integral part of one of the worlds most influential podcast brands oh and of course we discuss the Birth of The Pink Whitney!
From a production perspective, we discuss how long it takes to turn their conversations into a show. Recorded at 11pm it has to be out by 5am! And we get into some questions submitted by Spittin' Chiclets Fans.
We also talk about how Barstool is the best place on earth to work and how he can meet all of his hockey heroes and not flinch, but when Dave Portnoy walks through the office he still has a moment!
Mike’s personal journey is a proper good one, it really is the tale of persistence and determination paying off and how he pounded the emails of anything@barstoolsports until he finally explained to my second chiclets guest he could do everything with his mobile studio, he had none of it. As Mike explains himself.. if someone asks can you do something,, you say yes!
History isn't just Vikings!
We discuss the fact that history is anything thats ever happened and how by applying a broad brush allows the History Hit team to explore some awesome corners of popular culture! We explore the fascination of humans to blindly follow mad politicians, and how I wish Dan had been my History teacher at school.
History Hit is now a machine which has many facets. Visit https://www.historyhit.com/ for all the information you'll need and get into all the other excellent programming from the team!

Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes speak every week to someone who in the simplest of terms can be defined as a high performer. It's not just sports, it's high performance in every walk of life.
Previous Guests have included England manager, Gareth Southgate and one of my personal favorites Matthew Mcconaughey.
They have created “The High Performance Circle" a club for all things high performance and a new DTC model which enables the guys to deliver other content rather than just the pod, you should subscribe to that here, it's free!

They were great to chat to, and they gave us a proper view into what it took from starting the pod to 1M listens a month!
Enjoy!
From Blue Peter to Sky Sports and all in between Simon has been on my Telly box for nearly 20 years. Following the loss of his wife 3 years ago, Simon began a podcast dealing with a whole manner of different feats of human endurance through the most challenging of times.
He was a great person to talk to, both about his experience in broadcasting but also his life and how it's shaped him and his podcast. Another big shout out to Global, who are letting these artists make their podcasts how they want to, and frankly reaping the rewards of letting these stars shine! Simon was very generous with his time with me, and I hope you'll agree we got a great insight in to a really great person and podcaster!

James O'Brien hosts the podcast "Full Disclosure" He's also a decorated and unique (in my mind) member of the talk radio fraternity. He's been part of the furniture at Global Radio, specifically LBC for nearly 20 Years.
James is super important in my own podcast journey, as he was one of the few radio show hosts who I believed was genuinely in it for seeking truth rather than inflaming listeners purely for the purpose of creating a reaction to fill air.
He also hosts my favourite show on radio ever (still) Mystery Hour where he has his listeners flex their knowledge muscles in the search to some of life's more questionable questions (you can listen to it here: https://www.globalplayer.com/podcasts/42KbSh/)
We talk about how podcasting has become a part of his already jam packed weekly output, and how his show Full Disclosure allows him to speak to the people he's either never spoken to before or only spoken to in passing on air.
we spitball a dream team podcast with James and Chris Moyles (Also Global - just saying! Come on!) as hosts and he also gives us an insight into his dream guests.. 3 Queens, you'll have to listen to find out who!

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz is created by a team of outstanding professionals, piloted, inspired and motivated by Dan Le Batard. Mike and Chris (both decorated media pro's in their own right) paint a completely non sensationalist picture where by the departure from EPSN was relaxed and mutual, and the two companies worked together to make the show what it is today.
Mike and Chris obviously bask in the glow from Dan who sounds like the leader that people always dream to work with. This isn't just a sports show, its a modern day equivalent of a watercooler for sports fans of all types.
We discuss their move from ESPN, what it was like on Day 1 on their own, and how many of the team are still trying to secure their contract, some just working for the love. The guys showed me this is more like a community than a podcast.

Hey Weirdos!
My exposure to True Crime (until now) was traditional. Laura Richards & Delia D'Ambrose was my route in to True Crime as a genre, and I still look at their work (both their podcasts and where they operate beyond) with awe and admiration.
I preface with this because these guys do something completely different. I am in no less awe nor do I admire them less, but Morbid A True Crime Podcast is something else. They find the humour in the darkest of situations, and whilst walking you through some awful crime scenes.
For me the girls represent a really important aspirational journey in podcasting. They are organic, with no previous broadcast experience yet they've become a hot property on the PodBoard100 every week. We talk about meeting their PodCast Idols... as colleagues
Starting with a sketchy recording, a YouTube learned editing process and a fumbled upload (via Blueberry FYI) Hitting 100 Listens when it first dawned on the girls that people they DIDN'T know were listening! After 77 Episodes, The Boston Strangler episode dropped at #78 things went nuts. Audio Boom reached out then it went bonkers.
It should be credited to AudioBoom - the brief to the girls? "Keep doing what you're doing, don't change anything!"
They talk to me about their growth and their strategy! The three of us giggled our way through 80 mins of chatter with a special appearance from my dog. Honestly what more can you want?

We also discuss her new podcast "Lolita" as well as the other shows she features on regularly.

In this episode Podboard100 meets True Crime superstar Delia D'Ambra. She hosts 3 pods all under the Audio Chuck banner CounterClock, Park Predators & Dark Arenas Podcasts.
Delia is principally an investigative Journalist, who has shifted from conventional media to become one of the most listened to True Crime Podcasters. Podboard100 catches up with Deborah Haynes, foreign affairs editor at Sky News. She's joined by Chris Scott her producer, in a first for BTP. We discuss chicken nuggets, How Chris initially Fan-Boi'd Deborah, and how Sky have given them the freedom to make the pod their own.
The podcast "Into The Grey Zone" is essential knowledge. To be honest, if I wrote a descriptive you'd think we were writing conspiracy theories, Into The Grey Zone, details how many of those conspiracy sounding theories are actually, worryingly, spot on.
We catch up with US Political Podcast sensations #sistersinlaw comprising of 3 former US attorneys and one qualified lawyer turned journalist & commentator the Sisters make a formidable team.
Their Podcast #Sistersinlaw is already a smash on the Podboard100 and no doubt will remain there.
We discuss how the team was assembled, how they deliver their podcast when they all have a packed schedule already and the viability of chicken ownership in 2021. Yep, I had assembled in front of me 4 of the brightest minds in US Politics and I went all in on Chickens.
The pod is pulled together by the team at Politicon https://politicon.com/

Her newest podcast "Crime Analyst" is a smash already, and her - now 300 episodes in - other show Real Crime Profile (with Jim Clemente and Lisa Zambetti) has become the gold standard by which many true crime pods are set.
We talk about ALOT, every second of it was riveting to me to listen to and never before during an interview have I worked out my thoughts on the fly like this one. So do excuse my waffle at point, I'm poorly stalling for time in my head whilst I digest some of the massive things Laura says!
Pertinently from this conversation, Laura has only just begun.
I spoke to Mark Howard days after he’d completed his dream Podcast Interview with Surfing GOAT Kelly Slater. For this to be Howie’s Number 1 is quite a statement. He has been an ever present face in Aussie sports presenters at the highest level, world wide, for 15 years.
His Podcast “The Howie Games” Has never left the PodBoard 100 top 20 in Australia since we started compiling the chart. It is the undisputed (To be fair, it has been claimed that is was since day one. They discuss this in the episode!) Number One sports podcast in Australia.
Howie was incredibly generous with his time, and equally generous with me. We discuss all the usual aspects of making the pod, but we also have a mini brain storming session in the middle. Basically when The Howie Games Merch launches with “ACTUALLY NUMBER ONE” on it, let’s just say you heard it here first.
I got back in the studio for the first time in a while, wore a sweater, and left the heating on, so if you think you notice me slowly cook throughout the episode, you'd be correct.

Podboard100 spoke to Tara Palmeri 3 episodes into POWER: The Maxwells. Since then it's gone on to reach the same dizzy heights her only other podcast reached (BROKEN: Seeking Justice)
Tara is an investigative reporter for Politico, she's a previous White House correspondent as well as a string of other journalistic accolades across her career. We talk through the process of creating both podcasts and discuss some of stand out moments from POWER so far. She also walks us through her home setup (in her cupboard) how Sony gave her freedom to create and what production went into bringing the story to life. The episode briefly features Pancetta, Tara's dog, which is cool, because she opens Episode 1 of POWER!
At time of publishing her PodBoard stats read as follows:
6 consecutive weeks in the top 20 of the USA, Canada, Australian and UK charts. POWER peaked at #3 across all charts! In the UK 13 consecutive weeks on the UK PodBoard100
The series has finished, and all that the Podicon Boffins predicted came true. It smashed it.
tweet @tarapalmeri for your ideas for further seasons of POWER:......
Podboard100 meets Andy Lee, one half of Comedy Duo Hamish & Andy. Hamish & Andy have racked up 120 Episodes thus far of their ever popular podcast. Together they are camped out at the top 10 of the Podboard 100 at all times Andy is now host of The Cube in Australia.
We spoke for 1h15, laughing through most of it.
He is an accomplished author... a thrice published one at that, and his books make my daughter laugh as much as this interview made me.
Hamish & Andy's pod can be found at all good places you get your podcasts from, but mainly check out https://www.hamishandandy.com/podcast/
He is also responsible for this stuff, which is wet your pants funny

Podboard100 meets Wil Anderson, Aussie Standup Comic, Screen Writer, Breakfast Show Host and Presenter. He did a 10 year stint in LA, but is back in his native Aus, talking to me from his remote farm house near Byron Bay.
More pertinently, Wil is the host of numerous top drawer pods. Wilosophy,
TOFOP, FOFOP, 2 Guys 1 Cup (not like that)
Wil is uber relaxed, a great person to chat to and now a regular listen in my podcast week!Another example of me speaking to someone with literally decades of experience as I hope they don’t expose me for being new here. I learnt many things, and was also reminded of Russel Crowe’s illustrious Rock Career!
And all places you get your podcasts.
Wil’s shows can be found here:
Wilosophy - Long form pod speaking to Wil’s extensive friends list of interesting people about their life philosophy. Heavy subjects lightens by Wil’s sense of humour.. sometimes.
https://open.spotify.com/show/7jVR0NI17dHOyaApdvTWpQ...
TOFOP - Co hosted with Home and Away (Yes brits that Home and Away) Actor Charlie Clausen - the opening disclaimer is my favourite I’ve heard on any show.
https://open.spotify.com/show/53w6Ny9KrNOTzL7xXdfF2C...
FOFOP - As above, minus Charlie, with guest Charlie added.
https://open.spotify.com/show/1k9nJs5pwqDssYWzAeiSqb...
2 Guys 1 Cup - I listened for 10 seconds, breathed a sigh of relief it wasn’t Wil’s take on the similarly titled internet video, then heard something about football, then realised it was the wrong type. Went back to TOFOP.

Decorated Australian media personality, host of many, Marc Fennell is an all platform pro. His podcast "Stuff The British Stole" is a really interesting walk through our (as Brits) all too recent History. Marc walks us through the series highlights, the gear he uses and how he and his 6 year old built a studio in a closet!
After everything that could go wrong did. Files locked on a drive, a failed recording (I'm using the zoom audio for me - quite embarrassing - thankfully Marc knew how to do his properly so he sounds peachy!
Stuff The British Stole - Season 1 is delivered by Marc with ABC available from all good PodShops (Thank goodness thats not a thing)

Episode 2 and we get the chance to speak with Ben, Brett and Jordy Meiselas. Three brothers who birthed a whole new delivery system of political activism. As President Biden was sworn into office and outgoing President Trump left the White House for the last time, the boys collectively breathed a sigh of relief, but this is no means the end of MeidasTouch.
This is a movement that is going to spread across the world, a style of activism that connects with voters and influencers in a language they understand, however the guys remain ever humble in their success. I get the impression this is by no means "mission accomplished' this is mission begun.
From a podcast perspective The Meiselas Brothers have developed an independent fan base in their own right and they explain to us the journey of birthing the #meidasmighty into a team of millions who ensure the messages they create are seen all over the internet and beyond!
If you don't know who these guys are, then start by watching this: https://youtu.be/ASExe2g1yhs
They were a pleasure to "meet" and hopefully we'll do this again, in person, one day.
In this first episode of the PodBoard100's Behind The Pod we meet Ryan Jespersen. Ryan only began his digital broadcast life at the end of 2020 after decades in conventional TV. His show, Real Talk with Ryan Jespersen, has dominated the Canadian PodBoard100 since it's launch in October 2020
