Hope in Christ: A Come, Follow Me Podcast: Recent Episodes

Ben Peterson

A podcast created as a trustworthy supplement to your scripture study and the “Come, Follow Me” curriculum of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In each episode, we study the scriptures and align our study with the words of God’s living prophets in order to more accurately and deeply understand how Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation and exaltation and the gospel of Jesus Christ fit together into one great whole and how the Holy Ghost can help us find relevant ways to increase our hope and faith in Jesus Christ, and help Him prepare the world for His Second Coming.

I‘m your host, Ben Peterson. I hold a Master‘s Degree in Religious Education, spent time professionally teaching Seminary and Institute classes, and currently work in Correlation Evaluation for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where I assist in certifying the doctrinal accuracy of Church materials. I am a husband, father, and an imperfect but determined disciple of Jesus Christ. Despite any personal credentials, the ultimate authority on the gospel of Jesus Christ is the Holy Ghost. He is the ultimate teacher in this podcast and has enlightened the teachings of each episode.

This podcast is produced out of love for our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ and out of love for you. I hope each episode helps you Hear Him and helps you find greater hope in Jesus Christ as you seek to grow your faith in Him.

Considering the nature of my professional responsibilities at Church headquarters, it is naturally my desire and commitment to seek to align every teaching in this podcast with correct doctrine, however, this podcast is not an official publication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Sometimes we may think we have committed too much sin to ever be forgiven. Sometimes we may even feel that God has given up on us and so we should probably just give up on our relationship with Him. Some who walk away from their covenants with Him and thus leave His Church might feel a sense of freedom without their covenants.

The book of Hosea reveals the real truth about each of these thoughts. We have not passed the point of no return, God will not give up on us, and it's not too late to return to His arms that are open to receive us. And the sense of freedom we might feel if we walk away from our covenants with God is a false sense of joy that will eventually leave us crashing to the ground without a parachute.

Did you know that the Old Testament story doesn't begin in the book of Genesis? In this "Come, Follow Me" episode, we'll discuss a missing, but restored chapter that begins the entire Old Testament story where God introduces us to the main players in the journey of life, including one individual that has otherwise somehow managed to be nearly completely eliminated from the Old Testament text.

Find out who that is, and go on a journey with us to the premortal life where we'll discuss the grand council in heaven and foreordination as we set up a solid foundation for this year's study of the Old Testament.

Gender, relationships, marriage, and family. These can be sensitive topics that are both eternally important and deeply personal. Today we’ll take a closer look at these topics, not through the widely varying opinions of any group of men or women, but from the perspective of Almighty God whose plan it is that gives meaning and purpose to these topics. We’ll look at what the creator of the universe has to say about these seemingly controversial topics by reaching into one of the richest, most important, and perhaps one of the least understood documents of our time.

The doctrine of eternal marriage is foundational to the purpose of mortality. Perpetuating our marriage and family relationships into eternity is not only something that is possible through faithfulness to sacred covenants with God, but it is something our hearts long for. Even those who are married "until death do you part" tend to feel in their hearts a hope that their family relationships will continue after death. Learn in this episode about not just the act of marriage but the doctrine of eternal marriage.

In this "Come, Follow Me" episode, we also address the early practice of plural marriage by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This isn't a comprehensive discussion about every facet of the practice, but it does seek to shed light on some answers to common questions about the practice within the context in which it was revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith and likely other Old Testament prophets who were also commanded to practice this law.

Life is anything but fair.

We struggle with sickness, disease, cancer. With chronic pain, and debilitating accidents. With disability and discouragement, the unrelenting battles of emotional and mental heath, with their myriad of problems including anxiety, deep discouragement and devastating depression. We can suffer as a result of someone else’s poor choices. Some might suffer because of being single or childless. Others suffer because of a broken marriage or from watching their children suffer. Perhaps you’re suffering as you battle to overcome addiction or sin or some other form of the natural man or woman. Your battles may also be experiences of same-gender attraction, gender dysphoria, or a soul-wrenching identity crisis. And some of life’s hardest battles can be the personal and private ones you carry in your heart, the ones that you don’t talk about with anyone but God. And we cannot leave out the constant pain and sense of loss that can occur when death takes away the presence and companionship of someone you love so dearly.

With so much suffering, how can we continue to exercise hope and faith in Jesus Christ.

This episode is a conversation about how we can do just that, and how our trials can give rise to a greater purpose in our life and greater faith in Jesus Christ.

As you listen, I hope you hear God's voice speak to you to let you know how and why you should not give up and why persevering will be well worth it in the end.

God has promised that He will be with His people in these last days. But how can we make sure we are His people? How do we spiritually survive the last days?

This episode addresses some of the good and some of the bad of living in the last days. In this conversation, we also focus the discussion on major prophecies and promises given recently by President Russell M. Nelson to specifically guide us in our quest for spiritual survival in perilous times.
