Welcome to the Practical Wisdom From a Life Coach podcast. My name is Vera Ilnyckyj, a life coach dedicated to helping people gain clarity about what's important in their life so that they can connect with their purpose and take action to live a genuine and fulfilled life. In this podcast I share insights and ideas that provide simple, yet practical and effective solutions to challenges that we encounter in every day life. I invite you to join me to learn, grow and get inspired.
When business feels slow or stuck, our instinct is to think harder and search further. But often, the opportunities we’re chasing are already right in front of us.
In this episode, I share how slowing down, paying attention, and shifting your awareness can unlock your next big move—without the hustle.
Fun isn’t just nice to have -- it’s a powerful driver of creativity, resilience, and success.
In this episode, I share the three types of fun every entrepreneur needs, how to invite more of it into your work, and why fun might just be your most underrated business strategy.
In this episode I chat with Grace Ng, who started her business after coming to Canada from Hong Kong. Grace shares her philosophy around mindset and reminds us that we are responsible for creating the changes we want in our life.
We talk about the importance of community, asking for help, belief, and getting calm so that your inner guidance can be heard.
I recently had a moment on a podcast where I said something that really landed: “Doing things scared is an act of self-love.”
In this week’s episode, I share what that means and how fear, doubt, and discomfort can actually be signs that you’re growing and moving towards your goals.
If you’ve been holding back, waiting to feel ready, or avoiding the scary next step… this episode is your invitation to move forward with love.
In this episode I chat with Chandni Desai who shares her story of coming to Canada, losing her job, and finding confidence through community and entrepreneurship. Need some inspiration? Take a listen!
Follow Chandni on Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn.
In this episode, I share the story of a recent discovery call where someone hung up on me and why I chose to celebrate it. If rejection triggers fear, self-doubt, or drama in your mind (hello, drama-queen brain!), you’re not alone.
I share how to reframe rejection, rewrite the story you tell yourself, and turn a “no” into something that actually fuels your growth. This is a must-listen if you’ve ever felt discouraged by hearing “no".
Feeling tired? Me too. But what if that’s not a problem—what if it’s a sign you’re growing?
In this episode, I share why being mentally and physically drained can actually mean you're on the right track as a solopreneur.
We’re constantly learning, evolving, and becoming, and that takes energy.
Tune in for a reframed perspective and a few thoughtful journaling prompts to help you reconnect with how far you’ve come.
Here's a powerful mindset shift - you have the ability to choose how you feel, even in challenging situations.
In this episode I share a personal experience about getting negatively triggered and what I'm practicing doing to step into empowerment instead. Emotional regulation is a critical skill for solopreneur success, so take a listen to this episode if you're ready to move from overwhelm to control.

Ever been told to “trust the process” but felt like nothing was working? What I’ve learned is that trust is only half the equation. The other half? Action.
In this episode, I share how trust + action = success in all areas of your life. Whether it’s dating or business, the magic happens when you combine belief with brave action.
Are you feeling stuck in reaching your goals? It might be because of what you’re tolerating, and the excuses keeping you there.
In this episode, I dive into the power of identifying what you're tolerating in life and how those tolerations and the excuses that justify them might be silently sabotaging your energy, clarity, and success.
I share personal examples and a simple exercise you can do to clear the clutter, reclaim your power, and make space for aligned action and results.

You may be running up against Parkinson's Law which states that "work expands to fill the time available for its completion".

If you've been struggling with sleep, you're not alone. I've had to be honest with myself about where I've fallen off track with my sleep hygiene and have re-committed to creating a more supportive bedtime routine. Because having a good sleep is one of the best ways to help us stay inspired and taking action in our business.
I've also been re-reading The Untethered Soul, by Michael Singer. I've been inspired by his thoughts on how our mind creates melodrama, but that we are not our thoughts. I've been practicing separating myself from my mind and those negative thoughts that keep me up at three in the morning. By becoming an observer of our thoughts instead of a participant in them, we can help decrease anxiety, stress, and overwhelm, and therefore have much better sleep, and a stronger business!

As a coach, I've experienced the profound impact of holding space for my clients. However, this skill goes far beyond coaching; it extends to every aspect of our lives as managers, leaders, parents, friends, and fellow human beings. Holding space is a universal need that we all have, and it's something we can learn, nurture, and develop over time.
In our fast-paced, divided world, we often find ourselves eager to offer solutions, opinions, or distractions when someone shares their experiences with us. But true connection lies in the art of holding space, allowing others to express themselves fully without judgment or interruptions. It's about being present, empathetic, and creating a safe environment for them to open up.
In this episode, learn the benefits of holding space, how we can practice it effectively, and the transformative gift it can be for ourselves and others.

In today's episode I explore the topic of ghosting and ask where you are possibly ghosting yourself.
I share my personal experience with ghosting, or not keeping my word to myself.
Here are three key takeaways:
Shift Your Mindset: Sometimes, it's easy to get stuck in a negative cycle of frustration and complaint. But, we must take responsibility to change the situation. Focus on how you can shift your energy from scarcity to abundance by affirming and having faith that the perfect outcome is out there.
Keep Your Word To Yourself: The most important thing towards achieving your goals and dreams is to keep your word to yourself. Recognize where you're out of integrity with your words, actions, and promises to yourself. Evaluate your values and be honest about what would make you happy in life
Stop Making Excuses: "I don't have time" is the biggest lie when it comes to not doing something. If there's something you say you want to do, but you're not doing it, it's time to evaluate why.

On this episode I share my insights on the quote "If not now, then when? If not me, then who?" and how it can motivate us to take action and make positive changes in our lives.
There's never a perfect time to make a change and excuses such as not having time, not being able to afford it, or having other priorities are usually lies that cover up the true reasons behind the decision not to act. Holding ourselves accountable, owning our decisions, and being honest about our reasons and excuses can help us make positive changes in our lives.

In this episode I share three stories from three individuals that really inspired me.
I wanted to share them with you because I think its so good to hear other people’s challenges and how they chose to overcome them, instead of letting their life circumstances control them. These individuals decided to not let the curveball that life threw at them to dictate their direction – they chose to take the reins, set an intention for how they wanted to respond, who they wanted to be, and take action towards getting through the challenge.

Self-compassion can be defined as 'the sympathetic consciousness of our own distress, together with a desire to alleviate it." This implies two parts to the definition -- the awareness piece, and then the action piece.
In this episode I explore what self-compassion is, and how to give yourself more. I believe that when we have the tools for self-compassion, we can fill our cup, tap into our purpose, help others do the same, and create a ripple effect of positivity out into the world.

Is the model of 'work/life balance' outdated?
In this episode I suggest a 'life alignment' model that I believe is a healthier, more productive, and more compassionate approach to life.
Rather than trying to balance work with life, I believe that a wholistic approach to life is more beneficial, where life is comprised of eight different areas that connect and influence each other, and ultimately define the overall quality, satisfaction, and happiness of our life.

How you start the day, is what determines your mindset for the entire rest of the day. Even when something chaotic, stressful, negative or unexpected happens (because chances are it will). Starting off with a positive mindset where you remind yourself that you get to choose how you respond to your daily challenges, will go a long way in ensuring that you’re responding in a way that is aligned with your best self, and it will help you deal with the irritations and annoyances and even the toxicity.

Worrying keeps us in low frequency energies of anxiety, panic, worthlessness, comparison, and scarcity.
We worry because the future is uncertain, and our brain dislikes uncertainty. One of the most powerful tools I've used in my own life and that I walk my clients through was inspired by Tim Ferriss, and entails facing our fears by thinking through worst-case scenarios.
This exercise empowers you and helps you reduce your worry.

This episode was inspired by an article I read, titled "Psychologist explains why everyone feels exhausted right now and it makes so much sense".
If you're feeling tired, exhausted, unmotivated, anxious or stressed, it could be because you haven't given yourself the chance to process and heal from all the things that have happened to you over the past number of years.
When we don't step back and become aware of all that we've been through (good or bad), when we don't process, and when we don't allow ourselves to heal, that's when all the feeling we've been ignoring build up in our body - leading to the tiredness, anxiety, and stress we're currently experiencing.
Take a listen to hear my thoughts about how to step back, and allow space for processing and healing to happen.

Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert
We are all creators of our own life.
It's up to each of us to lean into our creative energy know that we are in control of our experiences and how we define what happens to us.
Along with creativity, comes fear. Fear wants to stop us from creating the life we want.
We need to learn to acknowledge that fear is along for this journey we call life, but we cannot let it control our creative power.
As Elizabeth Gilbert writes, "...if you can't learn to travel comfortably alongside your fear, then you'll never be able to go anywhere interesting or do anything interesting."
Step through your fear and into creating a life that you love.

Lately my mind has felt cluttered from all the external noise surrounding me.
This noise disconnected me from my inner wisdom which had to get my attention through a pain in my body, specifically a sore neck on the left side (which means a disconnection from Self).
As I recognized and acknowledged this, I knew I needed to sit in more stillness and quiet with my Self. I decided to dial down the external noise and dial up my internal wisdom.
Take a listen to this episode to learn more about my awareness around the mind/body connection and the importance of slowing down, getting quiet, and tuning into our own inner knowing.

In this episode I share the role self-doubt plays in your life and how to live with it. I also share ideas on how to create an environment that will allow you to stay strong in the face of self-doubt.
Self-doubt, insecurity, and imposter syndrome are things that keep us stuck, keep us small, and prevent us from growth, learning, and self-discovery.
Stepping over your self-doubt leads to so many opportunities:
Stepping over self-doubt helps us step into the version of ourselves that we aspire to be. In doing so, we inspire and motivate others to do the same.
Self-doubt plays a role in our life. But, we can't let it control us.

The new year marks a time of transition. It's a time of year when many people reflect on the changes they want to make over the next 12 months.
Rather than expecting an abrupt change, I want to suggest that we start thinking about 'change' more as 'transition'.
Transition is a process that takes time, patience, and grace with ourselves. It's gradual, intentional, meandering, unpredictable, and challenging - and necessary if we want to step into a new version of ourselves.
While there is no instruction manual on how to go through a transition, in this episode I share some guiding ideas on how to transition to your next, new version of yourself.

I don't think we make enough time to acknowledge ourselves and all that we've overcome and accomplished.
But what if taking a good look at your journey to date, reflecting on the dots that brought you to where you are today, and acknowledging yourself for all that you have accomplished, brought you closure, healing, a connection to your inner wisdom, a recognition of all the gifts that you have acquired on this journey, and a deeper clarity of your purpose?
What if acknowledging yourself for all the hard things you’ve overcome actually helps you shine your light more brightly, allowing you to create an impact on those in your life?

Viktor Frankl said “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response." That space between stimulus and response is so infinitesimally small, and yet there’s enough space there for us to have the power to decide on our response. Or, we can choose to ignore that space and just react. I think it's a wonderful gift to have a choice about how we live our lives, no matter what.
In this episode I share my thoughts about the difference between reacting and responding, and how we can learn to take control of our reactions and turn them into intentional responses that are aligned with how we wish to show up in the world.
I'm replaying this episode now so that you can think about responding versus reacting in the context of the upcoming holiday season which can be triggering, emotional and stressful. In today's episode, I share some excerpts from chapter 15 of Michael Singer's book, The Untethered Soul. In this chapter, Singer teaches how the decision to be happy, is simply to choose happiness all of the time, no matter what is going on around you.
While this chapter inspired me and reminded me the power I have over my own life, I also question how you can be happy when something terrible is happening to you. I come to the conclusion that choosing hope is as powerful as choosing happiness, and choosing to believe in a silver lining is how we ultimately create hope, and therefore happiness.
Let me know if you agree or what your thoughts are on this topic of unconditional happiness.

You already are your best self, right now. However due to programming, your ego self may be taking you down the road of discouragement, frustration, jealousy, resentment, or discontent.
In order to bring yourself into higher frequency energies such as confidence, happiness, satisfaction, and even joy, it's important to know that being your best self is not only possible, it's in your control. This starts with awareness and then moves to the letting go of baggage that doesn't serve us.

Discouragement is a low frequency energy of a victim mindset. When we feel discouraged it's usually because we're comparing ourselves to others, letting our ego tell us that something is wrong with us, or we're believing the false story that what we're doing is "not working".
When we feel discouraged, we have had our courage taken away. But, underneath the heavy feeling of discouragement is the capacity to choose courage. And the capacity to dissipate discouragement and move towards higher frequency energies of empowerment, joy, confidence, enthusiasm, and courage.
In this episode I share my Discouragement Dissipation Process which I created to help me move out of discouragement. It's a process I use with clients in my 3 month Accelerate Your Inner Wisdom coaching program. You can use it next time you hear yourself say "this is not working" and you start getting into the low frequency of discouragement and disempowerment.

I've been using the word co-creation lately, instead of collaboration. To me, co-creation is a powerful word that invokes togetherness, inclusivity, creativity, and empowerment.
Co-creation is more heart-centered, supporting vulnerability, trust, openness, and love. So when we co-create with other, and with God/the Universe, we are also creating a shared positive energy.
In this episode I share why I love the word co-creation, I remind you that you're never alone in reaching for your dreams, and that the more co-creation we can initiate, the more positive impact we'll have on the world.

In this episode I share a personal experience that made me feel shame. According to Brene Brown, "shame is that warm feeling that washes over us, making us feel small, flawed, and never good enough".
It's possible to feel shame, and move to forgiveness. Part of forgiveness is taking accountability and responsibility, apologizing, committing to doing better, and being open to the gifts and opportunities that our experiences present us with.
I hope that by sharing my experience with you, you'll know you're not alone.

Do you ever "just don't feel like it" when it comes to a healthy habit you've committed to?
We all feel this way sometimes – unmotivated, low energy, not into it, tired, bored, dragging our feet, or maybe even a little depressed.
When you feel like this what do you do about it? Is there a way to get out of the low frequency energy of “I don’t want to” and do the thing anyway? Or is honouring the “I don’t want to” the right decision sometimes?
In this episode I explain the difference between motivation and commitment, and also give you some practical tips on how to stick with your healthy habits on days when you just don't feel like it.

Do you find it uncomfortable to ask for help or support from others? This seems to be the case for many people, especially in our society.
Why is it important to start getting uncomfortable and start asking for help? In this episode I explore some reasons why, but the biggest one is that asking for help makes us vulnerable. And vulnerability opens us up to an entire range of opportunities for growth, learning, and positive change.
Mentioned in this episode:

I don't think we make enough time to acknowledge ourselves and all that we've overcome and accomplished.
But what if taking a good look at your journey to date, reflecting on the dots that brought you to where you are today, and acknowledging yourself for all that you have accomplished, brought you closure, healing, a connection to your inner wisdom, a recognition of all the gifts that you have acquired on this journey, and a deeper clarity of your purpose?
What if acknowledging yourself for all the hard things you’ve overcome actually helps you shine your light more brightly, allowing you to create an impact on those in your life?
In this episode I explore the importance of acknowledging yourself and also give you some practical ideas on how you can start.

Do you set high expectations for yourself and others that lead to disappointment, frustration or resentment? Brene Brown says that "expectations are resentments waiting to happen". Does setting expectations lead to outcomes that aren't achievable, or do they help set standards and prevent you from settling?
In this episode, I share my ideas on this interesting life paradox, how you may be confusing expectations with boundaries and goals, and how letting go of expectations can actually free you to be open to endless possibilities.

Are you able to receive compliments? Or do you resist and even deflect compliments?
Compliments are gifts given to us by others.
By deflecting compliments, you also deflect other gifts such as gifts of help, words of encouragement, material gifts, and even the gift of self-care.
It's important to receive compliments because it allows your heart to be open to hope, abundance, money, purpose, and love.

Being able to hear your inner voice is critical to your happiness, fulfillment and sense of purpose.
External noise obscures, diminishes and overrides your inner voice if you let it.
Your inner voice is a soft whisper, therefore getting comfortable with silence, learning to become friends with all of your emotions, and becoming aware that you can be in charge of your reactions is key to tuning into your inner wisdom.
This is a journey -- a heart-healing journey -- that can start today.
Join my free Facebook Group for connection, support and shared healing
You don't need to be on this journey alone. All of us have experienced heartbreak in one way, shape or form and by connecting with each other in a spirit of support and love, we can help each other feel less alone. Through connection we can ease the healing journey by sharing stories, supporting others, and receiving support from others in a safe, kind, and loving space.
That's the intention of this group - shared support, learning, inspiration, accountability, and most importantly, love. Love is what heals, and what brings us together, so that together we can create positive ripples out into the world.

I attended my Grandmother's funeral this past weekend and it brought up a lot of memories -- and questions to reflect on. Including: What memories are you creating? How are you making others feel? What impact are you having on the people in your life and on the world?
If these questions resonate with you, take a listen to this week's episode to hear my perspective and the importance of being intentional about showing up in genuine and grounded positivity, living in love instead of fear, and recognizing the responsibility, and honour, of having influence on those around us.

The message that came to me this week was "accept yourself", which I knew would lead me to uncover yet another layer about my core wound of rejection.
I created a process that brought me to my inner child who felt 'not accepted' (rejected) when she was five years old. This process involves reflection, acknowledgement, feeling the feelings, naming the feelings, telling your inner child that you accept them, and opening up to the gifts that our painful experience has brought us.
In this episode, I take you through the process with my own example so that you can do this exercise for yourself too. It takes you through one more layer of self-understanding, self-learning, and truthful discovery.
This episode is for you if you've ever felt rejected or not accepted for who you are.

Very often we have habits that we’ve done for so long, even since childhood, that we don’t even remember how or when or why they started in the first place. Are these automatic and unconscious habits serving you?
Some habits are attached to feelings and emotions and because of this, habits can be changed by being aware of what feelings or emotions we have while doing the habit.
If you don't want to live "by default", it's important to become aware of your habits and get curious about the reason you have them and whether they are enriching your life by helping you be healthier and happier.

How do you live your values? And why is that so important? These are a few of the questions I answer and comment on during my first solo episode. My reflections are inspired by my twelve podcast guests who have been on my show to date. Each and every one of them is so clear on what is important to them. This clarity drives their decision making, inspires their actions, and enables them to live an authentic and genuine life that is true to them. Knowing your values, having that clarity, and living your values every day, allows you to live in integrity with yourself. Your values help you make decisions and take action in a way that is true and meaningful to you - even during times of chaos, uncertainty, and stress. Indeed, knowing what we stand for is especially critical during challenging circumstances. By knowing and living our values, we won't be swayed by our circumstances or by other people's opinions. We'll feel in alignment and on track to live our best life!
Thank you for listening to my podcast. I value and appreciate your support. I also value your advice on my podcast and any suggestions you have for future topics or guests. Over the next few weeks I'll be recording solo episodes, sharing common themes that have emerged from my interviews, and also sharing my learnings and thoughts about a variety of different personal development topics. I hope you enjoy.
I look forward to connecting with you on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram, or check out my website.
One of my intentions with my podcast is to have inspiring conversations with people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences, because I believe we can learn so much from different perspectives. My guest today is Linda Dudar, who has years of leadership experience and success as a teacher, administrator, professor and Dean of Education. Linda says she’s retired but she continues to stay active and focused on her mission of making a difference in the world. In our conversation we talk about so many things, including the importance of believing in yourself, having trust and being open to possibilities. We talk about faith, resiliency, and gratitude. Linda also talks about servant leadership, turning fear into love, and the knowing that when good people come together, great things happen. I was so inspired by this conversation, and I know you will too.

In our conversation, Jaye talks about how he is taking action to “live his life”, an intention inspired every day by Chrissy. Grief is part of the human condition and something we will all need to face at some point in our life; however its not something we talk about often or openly enough in our western society. At age 32, Micheal McKay was outwardly successful. He had a profitable business, he owned a condo in a trendy part of town, and was engaged to be married. But, deep down he was unhappy. So, in 2015 he blew up his life and moved to Cambodia, where an opportunity to work had come up. He’s been in Cambodia the last six years and in today’s conversation we hear what he’s learned on his journey, his thoughts and advice on goal setting, happiness, privilege, and not waiting to do the things you really want in life.
About Micheal
In 2014 I had everything. I was 32, running my own company, owned a condo, and was teaching advertising one day a week. I was engaged to the “girl that got away” and we had two dogs together. I had everything I thought I wanted, but I wasn’t happy.
In early 2015 I blew up my life. An opportunity came to work at a Social Innovation Lab in Cambodia and I took it.
I’ve been abroad for six years, and without reservation, I can say it’s the best—and hardest—thing I’ve ever done. I’ve visited thirteen countries, and met people from dozens more. My ideals about life, my values, my intellectual and emotional boundaries—all of it has been challenged. My ignorance of the world, bared, and my first-world privilege, shamefully exposed. I’m not the same person anymore. And I am so glad.
These days I am working on my MBA while consulting on various business, innovation, and behavioural projects. I’m also a business partner in a social enterprise that sells eco-friendly and ethically made toys, knitted by women in Cambodia. It provides them with fair, flexible employment, and products that people love. I love business and I believe it’s possible to do good for the world and make a profit.

Sometimes failure, or hitting rock bottom can be the biggest blessing in someone’s life. My guest today is Yana Read, and in our conversation she shares her story of personal failure, that has led to a huge shift in how she defines happiness, how family has become her number one priority, and how she has deepened her friendships through opening up about her own struggles. We also talk about her journey as the founder and CEO of Pupper Select, a raw dog food company, and how her business has helped strengthen her relationship with her husband and daughter. I hope you enjoy the conversation.
About Yana
Yana is many things, but maybe most importantly—she's a dog lover.
The many things: Yana graduated with a BA majoring in Psychology at the University of Calgary, also receiving a Broadcast Arts diploma. She jumped into the world of media, sales and marketing, and started her career with steadfast determination and a passion to share her ideas with the world.
After launching luxury homebuyer magazine Retreat in 2005, and high-end local Bride & Groom Magazine in 2007, Yana went on to work for New Ad for a decade until 2019 when she decided to pursue her true calling: DOGS.
Yana started Pupper Select in 2019 along with her husband, Daryl, when their families dog suffered from allergies & countless ear & eye infections. They tried everything from numerous vet consultations to expensive medications. Medication would bring some relief, only as long as they kept using them. But that wasn’t the worst part – the greatest adverse affect was the huge toll it took on their Puppers mental health. After researching the underlying cause of canine issues, everything pointed to the fillers and chemicals that are in traditional kibble.
Pupper Select is about helping to educate doggy parents about the difference raw food vs kibble can make for their pup's health, life, and behaviour. Through compassion and communication, sharing evidence & experience, and by providing the most convenient access to your dog's new diet, Yana & Daryl are here to help your dog live its very best life.
