We all experience storms in life that create anxiety and uncertainty in our lives, because we realise we are not in control. These storms have the capacity to leave us with a lack of peace. We need a greater power, a power over us to bring order in the chaos. Psalm 29, speaks about the God who is in the storm, and the God who is in control of the storm.

The Good News, the Gospel, could simply be stated as this – Jesus is King! Jesus has defeated the powersof sin and death and invites all to participate in his Kingdom. It is a kingdom of life, not death. A kingdom of freedom from slavery. A kingdom equality and justice. A kingdom of power and grace. It is good news for everyone, everywhere. And for those who are in ‘the Kingdom’, our task is to proclaim it! Proclaim the King.
Paul encourages the church in Colossae to make every opportunity for the good news to be shared, in the way to behave, conversations had and answers to questions asked. Sometimes we either are not aware of the opportunities we have to share the good news, or not courageous enough to take the conversation further. In what ways can you make the most of the opportunities you have to proclaim the good news that Jesus is King?

As the church in Colossians grappled with issues of race and religion, family and slavery – Paul brings a message of equality and freedom. If Jesus is King, as Paul argues - then he rules over all of us as his people who are equally valued and loved. And this must work its way out in all aspects of life and society – from church life to family relationships and even work. In a time where slavery was the norm, Paul challenges the norm.

We all have a king that rules our life. And no, I don’t mean Charles! We all surrender our lives to something or someone that ultimately rules us. The question is not whether we have a king but rather what king do we serve. And the king we choose to serve will ultimately enslave us. The list is endless - relationships, family, money, career, beauty, fitness, technology. And the consequences of this slavery are a whole range of behaviours that are unhealthy, undisciplined and ultimately ungodly. In Colossians 3, Paul makes a list of such behaviours that ultimately lead to death.

Colossians 3:1-14When we step in to this new life with Christ, everything changes. The practices of death are replaced with behaviours of life. And this life is ultimately revealed in and through love. Love that brings forgiveness and hope to even the most broken and lost. Love that brings unity and peace.

In Paul’s appeal to the Colossian church, he reiterates the creative and sovereign power of Jesus in a what seems to be a known song or prayer. For Paul, everything is about Jesus. It is Christ who is the agent in creation, it is Christ who reigns over all things, and it Christ who redeems and reconciles creation back to God. In Christ, our relationship with God can be restored. That is what gives us hope. That is what gives us meaning and purpose. That is what gives us life. That is true power. The invitation for everyone is to make Jesus King. Make Jesus King over all things.

In this message, Andrew unpacks that as Christians, we live in the tension of being in this world under earthly ‘kings’ and members of earthly nations, yet we are citizens of another world and dominion – the ‘kingdom of light’ as Paul refers to it in his letter to the Colossians. The question that we wrestle with as members of this kingdom is - how? How can we exist with all the pressures and temptations of the world around us? How do we ‘live a worthy life and please him in every way’? Well, Paul’s answer is simple. Ask. Ask that the Holy Spirit fill you with knowledge, wisdom and understanding.

On the night before He died, Jesus gave His disciples a newcommand – to love one another. This doesn’t seem all that new at first glance. The Old Testament law commanded God's people to love their neighbour (Leviticus 19:18) and the expert in the law knew the whole law could be summed up by “Loving God and loving people”. The new part of the command was – as I have loved you. Jesus was commanding a new pattern of love and a new power to love. Elena unpacks this for us in todays message.

Isaiah writes that this child shall be called "Wonderful Counsellor." This title ‘Counsellor’ does not mean a therapist or simply a good listener (though he certainly does listen to us). It has little to do with the child’s capacity for empathy or compassion (though he has an abundance of both). Rather, it refers to his wisdom, a godly and kingly wisdom far and above that of human wisdom. Isaiah later writes: “And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD” (Isa. 11:2).
This Wonderful Counsellor would be wisdom for Israel, fearing and obeying God in their place. He would be a ruler who would not run and hide from evil, as some rulers had done. Nor would he be a ruler who would yield and conform to evil, as other rulers had done. He would instead face and confront evil with complete wisdom. And He would in every respect be the ultimate and most perfect teacher, guiding his people with sound judgement.

One of the keys to understanding how God is at work inthe book of Esther is knowing the God who is working. The rest of Scripture helps us understand who God is, and when we know what it looks like for God to move, we start to see his fingerprints all over this story.
Even in these moments of confrontation and celebration,we see God’s heart for the powerless. God’s heart is for the ones who had no way of saving themselves, and he works through the established order to bring hope to their situation.
This is the grander story of Scripture. God works through the established order to bring hope and life to his creation. We were powerless, and God gave us hope and offered us life.
As we read the account of Jesus on the night beforehis crucifixion in the Garden of Gethsemane, we may have a similar reaction to the one above. Why did Jesus have to die? Couldn’t God have just worked it out another way? Yet Jesus chooses to surrender himself to God’s plan and God worksthrough the established order (with a few miracles in the midst) to bring life and hope to his people.

Jesus’s teachings are full of agricultural metaphors. That makes sense for the creator of the earth! Doing the work of the Kingdom; that is, doing the stuff that Jesus did with the same heart and character as He has (Galatians 5:22-23), He describes that lifestyle as bearing fruit. The only way a branch can bear fruit is by remaining in the vine. A detached branch loses any chance or hope of bearing fruit.
Fruit is not for the vine or the branch but produced to be enjoyed by others. When fruit is picked from the branches, no harm or damage is done to the branch. In fact, it increases the potential of the branch as it remains in the vine, drawing the necessary nutrients for fruitfulness. The fruit that we produce as we remain in Jesus is always about serving others and doing good to them, even our enemies.

God has been in the business of provision since creation. God met the needs of Abraham, where He received the name Jehovah Jireh, when He provided a ram for the sacrifice. Genesis 22:14 says, “So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’” The death of Jesus on Calvary's hill was God's ultimate provision for our greatest need. Jesus is Jehovah Jireh, our great provider. He is able to provide forgiveness for our sins and meet our daily needs and the needs of those around us (Matthew 6:31-33).

We are radically loved. The cross has visibly and permanently revealed the love of God for us. It is a love that is so powerful that it will never be removed or overcome. As Paul exclaims, it is a love so strong that we will never be separated from God. That must give us great comfort and assurance. It also gives us the strength and resource to go and be love to the world around us. We have received the good news – now we must go and live the good news!

Being united to Christ means that we are no longer slaves to sin but rather we are filled with the Holy Spirit. And the Spirit affirms in our heart that we are no less than children of God! What an honour and privilege to be chosen. We are co-heirswith Christ. We exist as Christs representatives to bring God’s redeeming presence and grace into it – knowing one day all things will be made new.

Sin doesn’t make you bad – it makes you dead. Sin destroys you because as Paul argues, it enslaves you. We all are in danger of being enslaved by sin. It may be life destroying habits that we often think of, but may also be the small,justifiable things that take hold of our heart over the long time - like gossip or envy, pride, or laziness. It is for all of these enslaving sins that Christ came to die for in order that we may be set free. Both here and now, and for eternity. There are echoes of the Exodus here for Paul as he writes to the church. The people of Israel were enslaved under the reign of Pharoah, with no hope or future. It was God’s plan to set Israel, his chosen people free then – and his purpose in Christ to set his creation free today.

No matter how hard we try or how good we may be, we cannot save ourselves. All have sinned BUT all are justified freely through the gift of Jesus’ atoning death. Jesus, God in human form, the perfect sacrifice, gave himself for every person in order that our guilt may be accounted for. The righteous for the unrighteous. A king whose personal sins devastated not only his own family but God's chosen nation. In triumph and in tragedy, this earthly king points forward to a greater king to come.
As we read of the courageous victories of King David, I pray that we will be filled with hope and faith in the victory King Jesus has won for us. As we reflect on the heart of a worshipper and leader, I pray that we will glean Godly wisdom from David’s life and respond in worship of the King of all Kings.

In this series, we are following the biography of David, Israel’s greatest king. A king who began his life as an obscure shepherd boy but became a warrior who brought rival nations to their knees. A king described as “a man after God’s own heart.”, wrote worship songs that have been sung throughout the centuries. A king whose personal sins devastated not only his own family but God's chosen nation. In triumph and in tragedy, this earthly king points forward to a greater king to come.

When Jesus is being questioned by religious people with a long history of belief in God, He claims that they need saving from their sin if they are to truly know God as their Father. They are indignant that they are right with God because they come from the family line of Abraham, but Jesus declares that His words have greater authority as, “before Abraham was born I AM” (John 8:58). Because of those two simple words, they picked up some rocks to stone Him. They knew that with those two simple words, that Jesus was claiming to be God Himself. (Exodus 3:14)
Jesus’ “I Am” statements have a radical inclusivity in His invitation (whoever, anyone) and a clear exclusivity in that He is the only one that can deliver what we need. This is a series with a clear call to believe in Jesus as the Son of God for salvation and an invitation to experience the life of Jesus every day.
