Biography
Arian de Bekker has been actively involvedin Canadian livestock production since 1999, when he and his family arrived in Manitoba. vOriginally from the Netherlands, Arianadded to his practical agricultural knowledge and experience by working in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the United States and eventually Canada.
His education also started in the Netherlands, followed by Berkshire College of Agriculture in the UK and he obtained his Masters Degree at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
Dairy farming, crop production and eventually being involved in pork production allows him to express his interest in agricultural business development, previously with MS Schippers and Farmers Depot and currently through his work at the Neogen Corporation.
Arian is passionate about helping others succeed, organizing, being involved in community and a local co-operative of independent pork producers. Family however is always first and foremost. Arian and his wife Jane have 4 children and two grandchildren.

About our guest I was born and raised in Colorado. I grew up on a registered black angus cattle ranch and was involved in showing animals through 4-H. After graduating high school I went onto Kansas State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Industry with a Production Management option. During my studies I partook in a single internship that led to my career in the swine industry. I was able to gain valuable experience working in a variety of farms including my time managing a 4,600 head sow unit. After that, I moved to Ohio to take on a new role with Heimerl Farms overseeing the production of their sow farms.

Dr.
Joseph Connor is the founder of Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD. He
purchased the CVS practice in 1980 and built his client service network
to become one of the foremost swine veterinarians in the world. CVS
maintains client service relationships with over 500,000 sows in the US.
Dr. Connor regularly consults with other veterinarians to bring new
disease management practices to producers in the U.S. and in other
countries including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Australia, China and
countries in Europe. Dr. Connor is a featured speaker at many industry
programs and has published a wide variety of peer reviewed articles on
swine health, nutrition, and disease.
Dr. Connor obtained his
Doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1976 from the University of
Illinois, and subsequently, an M.S. degree in Veterinary Medicine from
the University of Minnesota in 2006, and completed the Executive
Veterinary Program in 2009 with the University of Illinois. He is the
past President of the American Association of Swine Practitioners and
through that Association has received the Allen D. Leman Practice Award
and Practitioner of the Year Award.

Cambre has been involved with raising pigs since he was a young boy. Growing up on a small farm in Northeast Missouri, Cambre spent many hours helping in the large sow unit his dad managed nearby. Later, Cambre started his own small sow herd while in high school. After graduating, Cambre enrolled in College of the Ozarks where he worked on the school’s hog farm to pay his tuition. In 2007, Cambre met his wife Chelsea who also worked at the college’s hog farm. After graduating, they got married and Cambre began his career as a field representative for Cargill Pork where he was able to expand his experience in the pork industry. In 2017, God provided an opportunity for Cambre and Chelsea to buy a farm and start their own hog operation. Cambre and Chelsea currently have 350 sows on their farrow to wean farm in southwest Missouri. Selling pigs through a niche company has provided a marketing channel and allowed Cambre to enter the agriculture industry as a producer. They are grateful to be doing what they love and blessed to be raising their four kids on a farm.

About Our Guest
Victoria Wilson is no stranger to animal agriculture, as she grew up riding horses and competing in rodeo. What she did not know is that she would fall into animal nutrition as a career. Hailing from St. Charles, MO, Victoria has made her way around the Midwest. When she initially decided to attend the University of Missouri for her BS in Animal Science, she had her sight set on reproduction focused in equine and beef cattle. After trying something new in swine and poultry, she discovered a love for the challenge of nutrition and how it impacts every aspect of production in livestock. She took a leap and made her way up to Ames, IA to attend Iowa State University for a MS focused in monogastric nutrition. Her thesis research focused on enteric inducers of oxidative stress and their impact on nursery pigs. Following her time at Iowa State, Victoria took a year in industry working as a feed mill coordinator for Seaboard Foods in Guymon, OK, focusing on ingredient and feed quality, working with farm management on feed ordering and optimization of feed delivery relative to biosecurity. Combined with her career aspirations and new knowledge of feed manufacturing, Victoria is now pursuing a PhD in Feed Science at Kansas State University.

July 22nd 2019 was the day Brooke Taylor gave birth to her daughter, on that same day she diagnosed with stage 2b, triple-negative breast cancer. Mrs. Taylor has had an illustrious career in the Swine Industry working with the Oklahoma Pork Council , she hosted influencer events like Farming to Fight Hunger’s Pig Pen Influencer Meet Up. Brooke has also worked with Swine teams like Elanco and currently is thriving in her own business the Rural Gone Urban and the Rural Gone Urban Foundation. Brooke opens up about her story, and twists and turns in her career journey along with the battle of her life with her second diagnosis in 2021. Shelbi Perry grew up in Chalmers, Indiana where she raised and showed pigs with her parents and sister. It was the time she spent showing pigs that sparked her passion for the swine industry, which ultimately led her to pursue a degree at Purdue University in animal sciences. Following graduation, Shelbi accepted an internship with Merck Animal Health as a swine sales intern. She then decided to continue her academic career by pursuing a master’s degree with Dr. Safranski at the University of Missouri studying swine reproduction and heat stress. In the fall of 2020, she graduated with her masters and began her professional career at Merck Animal Health as a territory representative. She now resides in the Kansas City Metro.
Angie Krieger joined Sustainable Environmental Consultants (SEC) as vice president of operations in September 2022. A lawyer by trade, Angie holds over 20 years of experience in the agriculture industry. As vice president of operations, Angie works closely with SEC president, Dr. Sara Crawford, to create and implement the strategic vision of the company and ensure that current and future operational needs are met.Prior to joining the SEC team, Angie served as vice president of operations for National Pork Board (NPB) and was responsible for implementation and on-going leadership of organization-wide initiatives. Preceding her role at NPB, Angie was the director of animal welfare at JBS Live Pork and held various positions at Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation including that of lawyer, strategic account manager in hog procurement and regional supply team leader. Dr. Miriam S. Martin grew up on a ranch in Meadville, Missouri. Miriam completed he undergraduate degree in animal science at the University of Missouri where she discovered her passion for animal welfare. She earned a Masters in livestock behavior and welfare in Temple Grandin’s group at Colorado State University before enrolling in a Doctoral program at Kansas State University in August 2018. Miriam is the first recipient of the FFAR Fellowship in the history of Kansas State University. Dr. Martin’s doctoral studies focused on investigating pain and analgesic strategies in food animals. These studies resulted in the publication of 8 first author papers and 5 co-author publications. Miriam served as the Midwest ASAS Graduate Director and the CVM GSA Vice President. She is also the recipient of a 2022 ASAS Midwest Young Scholars Award. Dr. Martin successfully defended her Ph.D. on October 2021 and she currently serves as the Director of Animal Health and Welfare for the North American Meat Institute.

Kyle and Rachel Schulte live on their family farm in Central Illinois. Kyle is a production manager for Applewood Farms, a 14,000 sow internally multiplied farrow-to-wean operation, while Rachel is a swine veterinarian for pork producers throughout the Midwest.
Kyle and Rachel first met at The Maschhoffs, where Kyle was managing the Genetic Testing Center, and Rachel was interning in the Research and Innovation Department. Rachel was impressed by Kyle’s paint can juggling skills, as well as his positive outlook in the face of a lot of hard work. At that point, Rachel had just graduated with her Animal Science degree from Texas A&M University, and was headed off to Iowa State for her DVM, so Kyle requested a transfer to north-central Iowa to work as a Senior Field Advisor. He then worked in technical services for Ralco, formulating diets and managing their research farm.
Both Rachel and Kyle grew up on their family's grain and livestock farms and knew that they wanted that type of upbringing for their children. So in 2019, they moved back to Rachel’s family farm in central Illinois. As for what's next, they think the future is full of opportunities, and they feel ready to tackle the many things that are sure to come next.

My names Blake Floars, I’ve helped start and run our farrow to finish operation in Goldsboro, NC since October of 2021. Our business has has been able to put our sow farm, and other nursery/finish growers around our community back in business after all of us lost our contracts due to the impacts of COVID-19. My first profesional activity was at INTA ( National Agricultural Research Institute) between 1980 to 1983, where I had the first contact with swine working in pathology, more specifically in microbiology of respiratory diseases.
Later worked as a field practitioner and in 1985 I Joined BI ( Boehringer Ingelheim) working in marketing and technical service first in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.
In 1990 assumed the responsibility of the Regional Operative Unit South America.
In 2001 I extended my responsibility to the whole Latam being located in Mexico until 2006.
I was retired from BI at 2017 after 33 years of service. Now Im Working as a Senior Advisor.
From segment point of view I mainly worked in milk quality inside dairy production and since 2006 practically full time in swine focus in biologicals specially on Aujesky, PRRS, M. Hoy,and Circovirus.
My driver is to solve customers needs in direct contact with the customer, being part of their farm.

Malcolm S. DeKryger earned a masters degree from Purdue’s College of Agriculture in 1983, and was appointed to the Board of Trustees in July 2016. He is the president and co-owner of Belstra Milling Company, an independent livestock feed manufacturer located in DeMotte, Indiana that works closely with six Belstra Group pig farms and several large dairy farms owned by local families in the Fair Oaks, Indiana area. He is also a part-owner and the primary developer of all Belstra Group pig farms. Additionally, Mr. DeKryger is the general contractor and manager of “The Pig Adventure,” a working hog farm at Fair Oaks Farms that educates visitors on the pork industry. He has previously served as a member of the board of Indiana Pork Producers, and has received a number of awards for his commitment to upholding ethical farming practices including the Outstanding Community Involvement and Neighbor Relations award from the Indiana Soybean Alliance in 2008, an animal welfare award from the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association in 2014 and the Environmental Stewardship award from the National Pork Board in 2010. He was also named a “Master of the Pork Industry” in 2013 by National Hog Farmer magazine. The Purdue College of Agriculture named him a Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumnus in 2008 and a Distinguished Ag Alumnus in 2012. He has served on the College of Agriculture Dean’s Advisory Council and in 2012, he and his wife, Donna, established a scholarship for Purdue students in the Department of Animal Sciences. They are also frequent supporters of the Purdue Musical Organizations and the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. Malcolm and Donna are the parents of three married children and have six grandchildren.

Born and raised in Wabash County, located in North Central Indiana. Curless graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. degree in General Agriculture in 1979. He returned home to join his father and grandfather and become the sixth generation to operate their family farm. During his tenure operating Curless Farms, Inc and Liberty Swine Farms, Inc he grew the family swine operation from 150 sows to a 1200 sow farrow-to-finish operation. The farm operation consisted of both owned and rented ground totaling 1300 acres, raised corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay, an eighty head cow/calf operation, and fed out an additional 250 head of cattle per year.
Nationally, Curless has served on the Checkoff’s Pork Safety Committee and is a graduate of the Pork Leadership Academy. At the state level, he was a member of the Indiana Pork Producers Association serving as president in 2009 and serving as Indiana Pork’s representative to U.S.M.E.F. for 4 years. In 2011 Curless represented Indiana Pork and traveled with a group of Indiana businessmen on a trade mission to China with the Lt. Governor. Chris grew up in Orange City, Iowa. In 2008, he saw an opportunity to join the family pork production business. As he began to buy and raise feeder pigs, he saw the writing on the wall; it was time to go big or go out of business. The venture was a success and scaled from about 30 farms to over 350 farms and started raising over 1.5 million pigs per year (2018). As the company grew, so did the problems—from spiking death loss to sinking caregiver morale. In search of an answer to his company’s issues, Chris searched for a market solution, but none existed. Dr. Clayton Johnson & Dr. Attila Farkas from Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD discuss recent developments with African Swine Fever (ASF) testing programs here in the United States. Dr. Attila explains how he was able to leverage his network of swine veterinarians in Romania to partner with USDA, National Pork Board & Plum Island Animal Disease Center to collect the already approved whole blood samples as well as oral fluids from Romanian swine farms undergoing an acute ASF outbreak. These samples will be transferred from the Romanian team to the United States for testing at Plum Island with the goal of helping us understand if oral fluids can be utilized as part of a comprehensive ASF testing program here in the United States. Learn about how these samples may have a dramatic impact on ASF control not only in the United States but around the world.
Dr. Clayton Johnson & Dr. Claire LeFevre from Carthage Veterinary Service, LTD chat about their learnings from the 31stAnnual Carthage Swine Conference. Focused on how to acquire and develop skilled labor for our swine farms, the conference gave a detailed overview of the TN Visa program. This program provides skilled labor resources to many industries including animal agriculture.
