Brain injury is unpredictable in its consequences. Brain injury affects who we are and the way we think, act, and feel. It can change everything about us in a matter of seconds. The effects of a brain injury are complex and vary greatly from person to person. The effects of a brain injury depend on factors such as cause, location, and severity, and no two brain injuries are exactly the same. The most important thing to remember is that a person with a brain injury is a person first (Brain Injury Association of America).
Join us this week as we dive deeper into what brain injuries are, explore the different segments of the brain and their functions, as well as the types of brain injuries that may occur throughout one's lifetime and their prognoses.

"What makes seniors' nutrition such an important topic? Isn't food just…food? Well, you might be surprised. Your food choices can have big impacts on your well-being. For instance, healthy eating habits can improve your energy levels, boost your immune system, and make you feel great inside and out. For some older adults, they can even help restore feelings of youthfulness.
As people age, it's common for their metabolism and digestive systems to slow down. They also tend to become a little less active. Those are some of the main reasons why it's so important to get exercise and eat foods that are healthy" (Great Senior Living). Join us this week as we discuss basic senior nutrition guidelines, signs of poor nutrition to look out for, and how to encourage healthy eating habits in your aging loved one's daily life!

"Over the course of our lives, we spend a lot of time on our feet, and this may take a serious toll. According to research, an average adult will walk up to 75,000 miles during their lifetime; that is as much as three times around the planet! Imagine that and it isn’t difficult to see why foot care should be an important part of our daily routine.
It can be very easy to overlook the feet, especially when there are other health concerns like lowering cholesterol, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting enough exercise. But despite what a lot of people think, not looking after the feet can exacerbate certain problems or lead to physical issues. For this reason, it is essential to place importance on proper foot care" (Best Mobility Aids).

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye (the clear part of the eye that helps to focus light). Cataracts are very common as you get older. In fact, more than half of all Americans age 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to get rid of cataracts.
At first, you may not notice that you have a cataract. But over time, cataracts can make your vision blurry, hazy, or less colorful and can eventually lead to vision loss. Timely diagnosis and treatment is important to preserving the quality of your vision. Join us this week as we discuss what cataracts are, the types that exist, how to know when you might need to see a doctor, and what treatment options are currently available.

In general, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is widely considered a positive process to regain life from an individual who has suffered cardiac arrest. "What we usually see on TV paints a rosy picture of CPR and leads many of us to think everyone would want it. After all, the CPR shown on TV is quick, painless, and almost always works. In real life, the CPR process is brutal and survival rates are low" (DailyCaring).
Before a cardiac arrest event occurs, it is important to discuss with your aging loved one about the risks, benefits, and survival rates of CPR and decide wether or not they want to endure it if the situation were to arise.
Join us this week as we discuss what events necessitate CPR and what actually happens during the resuscitation process, as well as special risks older adults must consider, their chances of survival, and the reality of a post-CPR quality of life.

DME might sound straightforward since you already know what each word means, but it's actually a specific term used by Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance companies. Winter weather brings many hazards for those individuals who have to experience it where they live and work. Whether it is driving in poor conditions or having to clear snow, any task done in winter weather conditions often results in a higher chance of injury. One winter weather work task that can easily result in injury is shoveling snow.
The good news is that 15 minutes of snow shoveling counts as moderate physical activity. A 170-pound person shoveling for 30 minutes will burn about 250 calories. The bad news is that researchers have reported an increase in the number of fatal heart attacks among snow shovelers after heavy snowfalls. This rise may be due to the sudden demand that shoveling places on an individual’s heart. One study determined that after only two minutes of shoveling, the heart rates of sedentary men rose to levels higher than those normally recommended during aerobic exercise.
Join us this week as we discuss how to safely navigate the challenge of maintaining walkways and driveways through snowy winter weather!

Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, including older adults. No matter your health and physical abilities, you can gain a lot by staying active. In fact, studies show that “taking it easy” is risky. Often, inactivity is more to blame than age when older people lose the ability to do things on their own. Lack of physical activity also can lead to more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations, and more use of medicines for a variety of illnesses (National Institute on Aging).

This incredibly touching story can only be summed up by Turner Pruitt's written first impression when he was introduced—through photos and stories—to the young man who gave him the gift of life through a heart donation:
"My donor is Joseph Daniel Galinat. He was a senior at a Milwaukee, Oregon high school in 2008. He was a quiet, creative, [and] humble young man. he would like to volunteer for jobs that others ignored. Joseph liked to be in the background.
He was in Montana for the month of August visiting his grandmother on her farms. Joseph was spending time that month bucking bales of hay, digging ditches, and enjoying the great outdoors. He was killed in a tragic single-vehicle accident while taking pictures from the bed of [his] truck.
Joseph saved or enhanced the lives of 30 people with organ, eye, and tissue donations. I have met his family several times and attended senior day at his high school, as well as visiting his gravesite with his parents. Joseph is a special person who, at the age of 16, decided to become an organ donor. I have met the recipient of his lungs and his liver. I am Joseph’s living legacy, and try to honor him every day."
Join us this week as we so proudly welcome Turner and Adriene (Joseph's mother) to the podcast to tell the story of their organ donation journey that began with heartbreaking loss and transformed only by the grace of God into incredible faith, healing, and friendship.

If you are 75 or older, your risk is 1 in 3 and at present, AMD is considered an incurable eye disease. While the origins of AMD are still unknown, science has uncovered many of the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to its development, along with the body’s malfunctioning mechanisms that cause the deterioration of macula — the central portion of the retina.

"Sally looked forward to Thanksgiving dinner at her daughter’s house every year. She loved the smell of the turkey and all the fixings. She couldn’t wait to dig in. But, this year it didn’t smell like Thanksgiving and, when Sally ate the holiday food, she felt let down. It wasn’t as tasty as she remembered. No one else seemed to notice. Sally wondered what might be wrong: Could her senses be the problem?"
Did you know that your sense of smell and taste are connected? As you get older, these senses can change, and, like Sally, you may find that certain foods aren’t as flavorful as they used to be. Changes in smell or taste can also be a sign of a larger problem. Join us this week as we discuss what causes the diminishing of smell and taste, how to help combat it, and when it might be serious enough to seek your doctor for help.

For many of us, grandparenting means a weekend together every now and then, an afternoon play date, an evening babysitting, a summer vacation, or chats on the phone and email exchanges here and there. But when life circumstances change—through divorce, the death of parents, or changes to a parent’s work or school-related responsibilities, for example—it often falls to grandparents to assume full- or part-time responsibility for their grandchildren.
Also known as “kinship care,” a growing number of grandparents are now taking on the parenting role for their grandchildren, thus foregoing the traditional grandparent/grandchild relationship. This often means giving up your leisure time, the option of traveling, and many other aspects of your independence. Instead, you once again take on responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance of a home, schedules, meals, homework, and play dates (HelpGuide). Join us this week as we dive into the challenges, joys, and real-life examples of grandparenting!

What a blessing it was to have Rev. Tonnes Pollestad join us this week!
Reverend Tonnes Pollestad is the Development Director of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations (AFLC). He graduated from the Association Free Lutheran Bible School (now called Free Lutheran Bible College) in 1972 and the Association of Free Lutheran Seminary (now called Free Lutheran Seminary) with his Masters of Divinity in 1991. He has served as the Development Director of the AFLC since 2011. His primary responsibility is to raise funds to meet the annual budgets for each of the 10 ministries through visitation with donors. Tonnes travels 27 states building deep relationships with many about the 10 ministries of the AFLC for prayer and financial giving (bio from AFLC).
Tonnes joins us this week to discuss the weight of the responsibility of preparing an estate plan, what an estate plan includes, and the impact not preparing one can have on those we leave behind. Strap in folks, this is one you don't want to miss!

Have you ever received a diagnosis, treatment, or basic advice from you or your loved one's doctor and found that all of it went in one ear and out the other?
This week, we discuss what it means to be health literate, for the purpose of understanding the intricacies of your own health, as well as the health of your aging loved one. Diseases, unnecessary side effects, and even death in some cases can be avoided if we build a better working understanding of the jargon used by our health care provider. At the end of the day, one main theme seems to ring true throughout most all of our episodes... Prior proper planning is the key to success!!

Boy howdy, do we have a good episode for you this week! We are excited to welcome Polly Cavill, RT and End of Life Specialist, to the podcast this week.
As we've discussed in episodes-past, the last thing that most of us want to talk about is death. But because it is the one thing on this Earth that is ultimately inevitable, when death is near for you or for a loved one, a little bit of planning and a whole lot of communication can help bring peace to the situation. Polly facilitates these conversations on a day to day basis all in an effort to create a "beautiful death." We know, we know... a potentially jarring way to put it, but you'll just have to trust us as you dive into this truly captivating conversation full of love, laughter, and a whole lot of wisdom!

This year at our 3rd Annual Loving Through Alzheimer's - Alzheimer's and Dementia Seminar, we were stoked to welcome nationwide speaker on Alzheimer's care and author of Creating Moments of Joy, Jolene Brackey!
Jolene invited us to join her in looking beyond the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and focus more of our energy on creating moments of joy. It’s impossible to create a perfectly wonderful day, but we can create perfectly wonderful moments! We were blessed with the opportunity to be among Jolene's energy and obtain fun, simple ways to bring joy and hope into our everyday lives, and now we get to sit her down for a recap of the seminar and to dig a little bit deeper.

"The number of Americans over the age of 65 is projected to more than double by 2060, rising from 46 million to more than 98 million.1 Baby boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) will be the first wave of this elderly population boom. As the elder boom unfolds, the number of seniors with substance abuse problems could increase significantly" (Thomas 2021).
Join us this week as we deep dive into the ins and outs of substance use, abuse, and misuse in one of our communities' most vulnerable populations. The elderly turn to drugs and alcohol for many reasons, including physical and emotional pain, but despite difficulties accessing care, seniors who get help tend to do just as well if not better than those younger than them. We hope to open a conversation around how you can better identify the signs in your aging loved one and help them access treatment options.

It's hard to ignore that with aging comes a bit of loneliness. Those closest to us pass on or move away, and decreasing mobility strips us of our confidence to get out of the house and get involved in our communities. No matter how old we are, pets bring indescribable joy into our lives. But how do you know if the addition of a pet in your aging loved one's home will be a smart choice? OR if it will create more work that leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety?
Join us this week as we consider all aspects of introducing a pet into the lives of our aging loved ones, the pros and cons of pet ownership in this season of life, and if it is ultimately a good decision based on your situation and circumstances.

Sometimes we don't know how we're going to act in a situation if we've never been in it—and we shouldn't be expected to. Navigating home care, whether it's on your own or with 10+ family members contributing, can be daunting. Family dynamics can speed up, simplify, and ease OR slow down, complicate, and add difficulty to the process. Every situation is different, just as every family is different.
Join us this week as we discuss family dynamics and how they contribute to initiating and carrying out a care plan for an aging loved one!

Strength. Resilience. Hope.
No one models these three words better than Marty Meyer, recently deemed the Flathead's Local Hope Dealer. But becoming a dealer of hope didn't come without incredible heartbreak. This week, we are honored to welcome Marty to Caregiven to share her story.
Several years after enduring a tumultuous season of suffering, Marty has transformed her life for the better only through the strength and grace of God. Not only is she an incredible contributor to her church and leader of the "She" experience, Marty is using her experiences with struggle and pain to change lives as a highly sought-after life coach. We were SO blessed to have stolen Marty away for an hour to share with us the ups and downs of her incredible journey, as well as her testimony of how God showed up in her darkest moments.
Needless to say, this is an episode you do not want to miss!

*"My needs are not as great as my mom's."
"I will focus on taking care of myself later; my dad needs me now."
"Am I doing enough?"
"I am not doing enough."
"I am not a good enough caregiver."*
These are all things that, as caregivers, might run through our heads from time to time. Caring for a loved one is such an emotional investment. If we bottle up our emotions and frustrations, we tend to have outbursts which later turns to strong feelings of guilt, frustration, and more outbursts; a cycle which only leads back to guilt. But we have the power to change the conversations we have within our heads.
This week, Inga and Julie discuss ways we can learn and grow in our abilities to give ourselves grace, ultimately striving to eliminate our own caregiver "guilt." Whether you're a family caregiver or a professional caregiver, we hope you listen along to learn how to cut yourself some slack while still maintaining positive and healthy relationships with those you're caring for.

We've all heard of the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. But we don't talk as much about how we can support someone throughout their experiences in these five stages, especially in our aging population.
Join us this week as we dive into the stages of grief, what to expect from our loved ones when they are grieving, tips for how to support them, and a list of things to definitely avoid in your interactions with them moving forward in their healing process. 99% of the time we may think we're doing something, saying something, or specifically NOT saying something all in an effort to help, but sometimes it can be counterproductive and slow healing even further.

Throughout the episode, Schaffner brings so many important things about hospice to light that can make your decision to say “yes” to services for your loved one a little bit easier.

This week, we want shed some light on a topic that doesn’t get talked about enough—end of life planning. Formulating and documenting your end of life plan will bring so much relief to your loved ones as they will know for certain that they are doing exactly as you wished. For families carrying out our end of life tasks without any prior planning, emotions can fester and disagreements can become escalated as each family member will have a different idea of how you want your affairs handled. This is a stressful time for your family—lightening the load is invaluable to their healing.

This week, we’re talking about how to navigate the holidays with your loved ones who need in home care, as well as how to support those who are caregivers. As we age, holidays can become more and more difficult for many reasons. The expectations of holidays can be stressful, old memories attached to painful emotions can be conjured up, thus eliciting confusion, sadness, and even anger around a time of year that others might assume is joyful. Planning holidays can also be hard for those who are family caregivers, knowing the limits their loved one might face that might not be otherwise understood by long-distance family who only sees them once or twice per year.

For anyone that’s explored home care, one question always rises to the top: How on earth do we pay for this?
Luckily, families have several options to explore that can help get loved ones the care they need to stay in their homes. This week, we are discussing the 6 most common types of payor sources we handle on a day-to-day basis. Since our experience largely lies on serving families in Montana, be sure to verify this information with an expert in your state to see if the rules and programs are similarly run. Generally speaking, this article is a good starting point and will give you the ability to ask the right questions to the right people.

It’s completely normal for us to have high expectations when it comes to our family’s care. It’s a part of who we are. But often times, these expectations can get in the way of reaching the level of care the senior needs.
This week, we're discussing expectations and the importance of committing to being flexible with the expectations we set for ourselves and our loved ones. Discussing what we expect and what we can accept as a family are very important conversations for families to have, since everyone will need to be on the same page for the care plan to be deemed successful from everyone’s perspectives.

Many families struggle with finding the right moment to engage an in-home care agency with their loved one. This decision is often very difficult, especially when you are the primary caregiver. Many families begin providing care for their loved ones, but as their conditions progress, they may lack the technical skill to adequately care for their loved ones. Others face burnout from their overcommitment to providing care, all the while neglecting to fulfill their own physical, emotional, and mental needs. Join us this week on Caregiven, as we address the question, “when do I ask for help?”
