A master storyteller and engineer, Charissa took an unconventional path to graduate school in Thailand. Here she shares her highly unpredictable adventures full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing what she is going to do next.
“I didn't mean to end up in rural Thailand. In fact, I didn't even know I was going to be living there until I got off the plane. (It's a long story.)
But there I was, enrolled in a two year master's degree for mechanical and energy engineering in a place where nobody even spoke my language. I thought about quitting. Instead, I decided to try.
I taught myself Thai highly proficiently in less than 8 months. I explored and fell in love with a new culture. I wrote a whole 110 page thesis over downdraft gasification and got a master's degree! My passion for exploring cultures, loving people, and telling stories thrived.” – LinkedIn

Saludos! En este episodio conversamos con la autora, poeta y educadora Vidalina “Vida” Huertas. Hablamos de celebraciones únicas de la Isla de Vieques, incluyendo Festival de la Arepa Viequense, donde presentan todo tipo de arepas.
El Festival es para recaudar fondos para los pacientes de cáncer en Vieques. Durante el evento,se ofrecen charlas, artesanías, kioscos de comida con arepas cocinadas en distintas formas, reinado y el Gran Carnaval. En el 2019, se celebró del 31 agosto -1 septiembre.
Vidalina Huertas, educadora puertorriqueña, nació y se crió en la Isla de Vieques, donde cursó sus primeros doce años de estudios. Se graduó de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y completó una Maestría en Administración y Supervisón Escolar en la Universidad Interamericana. Entre otros puestos, se destacó como Directora Escolar en los distritos escolares de Carolina y Vieques-Culebra y en este último como Superintendente Auxiliar. En Texas se desempeñó como Profesora de español y Tutora de nivel universitario. Vida disfruta de su retiro dedicándose a hacer labor voluntaria en la comunidad y también a escribir sus próximos libros.
Su libro, “Vieques: esmeralda entre las olas”, y otras publicaciones están disponibles en Amazon,Barnes and Nobles donde aparece como “Vieques” y en librerías cercanas.

Sunny has been interested in animals since she was a young girl and has become someone who is very in tune with the issues that animals are going through, a pet whisperer. We talk about the responsibility of adopting a pet, the bittersweet side of being a pet parent, and how becoming a cat lover inspired her to choose a degree in Animal Science.
Communicating with Cats
While she can communicate and get down to the level of any animal, her specialty is communicating with cats. Sunny is the mom of three cat fur babies, which changed her life and led her towards getting her degree in Animal Science. We both agree that cats are so cute, and we’re not sure how exactly they do it, but they definitely use their cat talents to put us “under a spell,” reel us in, and make us love them.
Sunny’s experience with her cat has also included emotional support. “They let me pet them and go to them when I’m sad.” Of course, this depends on the cat and their personality, as not all cats are of the empathetic variety.
A Cat Stroller? Yes.
She recently bought a cat stroller and that comes in handy! Her fur baby likes the independence of being outside within an enclosed area. Sunny can easily take her cat to the appointments with the stroller and go about her day.
Pets as Part of The Family
Pets are a big part of her family, and losing a pet is a devastating life event. Sunny has adopted her pets from local shelters, which she likes because of the ability to connect with them.
