A couple of months ago, Adam and I visited one of our bucket list destinations; The Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan. A country most people haven’t heard of but if you have, it’s probably because it’s coined the ‘Happiest Country’, which famously prioritises its citizens happiness over national wealth (GDP). Bhutan is also known for being the first and only carbon-negative country in the world!

Join us as Adam and I recount our firsthand experience from a 7-day road trip around the country. We answer questions from our Instagram community and interweave a conversation that we had with former Prime Minister, Ushering Tobgay, covering all things adventure, culture, tradition & sustainability.

This week Adam sits down with one of his best friends, Sam. Sam is Adam’s most unlikely friend to take on Adventure since he loves his home comforts & relaxing on the couch. However, this all changed when Sam decided to challenge himself and walk the length of the Jurassic Coast - 186km in 6 days.

This episode highlights how you can hold onto your steady job and not have to go off to live in a Van or a boat to find adventure. It can be something you weave into your day-to-day.

Imagine getting a knock on your door after dusk. It’s a woman in her 80s holding two hiking poles and carrying a backpack. She asks if she can pitch her tent in your garden for the night. She explains that she is a long-distance hiker and she’s known as ‘the Old Lady on the Trail’. And yes, she is alone and no, she is not afraid.

Today’s guest is 82-year-old, Mary E Davison. She is a grandmother of 10, an author, a pastor & trekker with an impressive resume. Mary took up long-distance hiking at 60 and has since achieved The Triple Crown, walking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail (totalling 12,520km). All in all, Mary has traversed the most scenic, demanding & diverse trails in North America.

In this conversation, we talk to Mary about what it’s like to defy the stereotype of what an old lady can achieve. She shares stories from 60 years ago, when she was in the Peace Corps & found herself travelling alone in her 20s in Egypt - an experience that taught her to be courageous all throughout her life.

This conversation is so much more than an elderly woman doing an extraordinary thing. It is also about how you can learn to leave fear behind in pursuit of your own adventure.

As always, you can support the show by leaving us a rating, review or supporting us on Patreon (all links below)

We had the pleasure to sit down & speak with Christopher Venter - an Adventurer, Author & Speaker, who at the age of 40 lost his sight completely.

But instead of letting blindness stop him from leading a full life, it’s been the opposite. Almost a decade on since losing his sight, Chris climbs mountains, kayaks, drives unlikely vehicles & had even built his own house!

In this conversation you’ll hear his backstory, his motivations, mindset, and the challenges he faces and how he experiences the world as a blind adventurer.

This week we have a good old fashion van life conversation for you with no other than Seb Santabarbara, the author of ‘Van Life for Dummies’. He shares some of his lessons from over 5 years of van life, as well as funny stories about the best & worst of van life. In the conversation, we cover:

  • Tips for Starting Van Life
  • Lessons and tips for building a van including common pitfalls
  • Glamourised van life vs reality of van life (and our personal stories)
  • Things Seb that can’t live without in a van
  • Sebs struggles with mental health and his breakdown that led to temporary paralysis and he shares coping advice and wisdom around anxiety

Although this episode is about van life, there are so much wisdom and analogies that make for great life advice. Seb joined us from the UK whilst we were in Nepal & it felt so good to chat about one of our all-time favourite topics. Be sure to share with a friend, if you enjoy it!

This week we sit down to chat to the awe-inspiring, Steph Jeavons from Wales, who is the first person to circumnavigate the globe and ride a motorbike on all seven continents. She did it all on a relatively small motorbike ‘Rhoda the Honda’ and her adventure took her to 54 countries over 4 years.

In this conversation, Steph shares all about her personal journey that led her to be the kind of person that undertake such an impressive expedition… and it is not the path that most people would ever assume. It was her past of drug addiction and a jail sentence that ultimately led Steph to change her life around and pursue a life of freedom and adventure.

So of course, as well as speaking with her about her epic expedition, we talk about the mental fortitude that it took for her to change her life around and become the courageous woman she is today.

This week’s guests are Roseann & Jonathan Hanson who are, amongst many things, accomplished writers, photographers, artists, biologists, and explorers. They have spent 35 years taking on some epic overlanding expeditions all over the world. In fact, Jonathan has co-authored a book that many regard the ‘Bible of Expedition Travel’. They are also the founders of the highly respected Overlanding Expo and now the new upcoming Explorations Quarterly Magazine (which by the way, as a listener, you’ll get an exclusive discount with the code ‘Adventure’ once they launch. Join their waiting list here: https://www.exploringoverland.com/explorationquarterly

In this conversation, we talk about:

  • Their work and relationship to the natural world, as conservationists & biologists. What it means to be a naturalist and why this work is important.
  • Some good old-fashioned adventure stories, like the time they have to flee from a van load of bandits armed with AK47s.
  • We also talk about creativity and mindset; and why it’s important to keep reading and exploring new ideas and crafts, and skills.

Hello from Nepal! This week we are joined by @ClaireandPeter, a young couple from the US that was living a settled life, working in finance. Peter enjoyed life's routine and had no real burning desire to travel until Claire suggested they save up so that they could quit their jobs and go on a big epic backpacking world trip.

In that first year they backpacked to over 20 countries and documented their adventures on TikTok & Instagram, which led them to grow a community of over 500 million people across their social media platforms. They've now caught the travel bug and have just embarked on Year 2 of their backpacking adventure.

Claire & Peter have had articles written about them but this is the first time they’ve given an interview to share their story. In this conversation, we talk about what they’ve learned from a year of travel, including some hilarious stories of ‘budget travel gone wrong’, as well as life advice for anyone wanting to take the plunge and do the same. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as us!

This week we are joined by our new, mega-inspiring friends, Anet & Marko; who we met here on the Gili Islands, Indonesia. These two have embarked on a different kind of adventure; they are co-founders of the company “Moonshot Pirates” whose mission is to educate and empower young people from the ages of 15-20 to come up with innovative solutions to solve some of the world's biggest problems, like hunger, poverty & climate change. They do this by linking young people to mentors & providing funding for their ideas. Some of their young ‘pirates’ have even landed an internship at NASA!

Marko & Anet love to take on travel adventures, like cycling from Vienna to Croatia, or a 400Km bike ride with their then 7-month-old baby but it's their entrepreneurial mindset and approach to life that we think will leave you feeling inspired and like you can take on the world, after listening!

This week we sit down to with author and van lifer, Dot Bekker. Between November 2018 and August 2019, Dot traveled from Spain to her hometown in Zimbabwe in an old, self-converted campervan; A 1998 Blue Ford Transit, lovingly named BlueBelle, who also happened to be a 2WD. That’s right, Dot & BlueBelle, against all odds, (slowly) drove 20,000km solo to get 'home to Africa'. And the stories & insights that she shares with us from this trip are truly inspirational.

Dot’s hope is to motivate others to take on challenges and to realise their own potential because as she wrote in her book, ”if an ordinary sixty-year old woman could make something extraordinary happen, then so can you.”

This week we are chatting with Sara Qiu who, at 31, is travelling on her bike solo, from her hometown in Spain to Asia (where her parents are from).

So far she’s travelled 7,500km across 10 countries. The interesting thing about Sara is her approach to this adventure. She hasn’t set herself a time limit, nor does she have an exact route of destination mapped out. She really is just winging it, learning as she goes and seeing this as a personal journey for growth, both physically and mentally.

In this conversion we talk about her stories from the road but also practical tips & tricks for biting the bullet and getting on the saddle yourself.

It’s also worth mentioning that the last country that Sara travelled through was Turkey where she was hosted by some incredible families along the way. Since the devastating earthquake, Sara is now focusing her time and energy to fundraise €50,000 towards an NGO that is helping the people from both Turkey & Syria.

Let's help Sara, help the people that have shown her kindness on her travels: https://gofund.me/4d58148a

This is a extention of Ep 37, from our conversation with Antonio Cala. All about his epic motorbike trip through Africa - we hope you enjoy it! If you've missed Ep 37 make sure you dive into that too as it explains why Antonio is the 'most adventurous person we've ever met'! https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/FKuXmnWJCxb

Antonio has spent the last 10 years travelling, on all sorts of adventures but hasn’t been sharing online. He’s often been asked to do talks and podcasts, but it’s only now that he’s beginning to reflect on the last decade and he’s starting to share his story. We are honoured that our podcast is his first!

Antonio Cala, was part of the New Zealand Olympic Swimming Team as a trainer, before giving up his career path to go traveling. He went on to do a decade of full time travel with his wife Amanda to over 150 countries, starting by cycling 25,000 km from California to Patagonia in 3 years. They then lived on a sail boat for 3 years clocking up 20,000 nautical miles around the Caribbean & Mexico. And most recently they rode motorcycles 30,000km from Spain to Cape Town via West Africa.

This week we introduce you to Ellie & Carl from “Tough Soles” who in 2017, handed back their apartment keys, shouldered some (too-heavy) bags, and set out to walk every National Way-marked Trail in Ireland. This list of trails takes is over 4,000km of trails. No adventure project is ever linear, and so what started off as a 6 month project twisted and turned to include fractured feet, running out of money, and eventually completing them all in July 2019.

In 2023 they launched 'The Weighing In Project', where they are aiming to remove a tonne of rubbish from the Irish countryside in a bid to give back to the land that has given them so much.

This week we are thrilled to welcome fellow travel YouTubers, Karin & Brian from 'Sailing SV Delos' and in doing so, we continue our theme of life at sea and what it’s like to travel full-time on a sailboat! With over 800K subscribers, you might have come across these two already. Whether you're longtime a fan or new to their adventures, this episode is a great conversation to get to know them on a deeper level. What legends they are!

But for those of you who haven’t met SV Delos yet… Brian left his desk job as a software engineer on an 18 month sabbatical on a 53ft sail boat in search for adventure. This quest has led Brian to find the love of his life, Karin! Together, and alongside their 3 year old daughter Sierra, their voyages have taken them to 46 countries accross 44,000 nautical miles!

This week we met up with our new friends Jack & Gabby from @thistiny.life who have lived in their tiny 56ft x 6ft floating home, for over three years.

So before we head off backpacking next month, we drove Jits to Oxfordshire to find out what life of a narrowboat is like.

It was Adam’s first time on a canal boat and my second and we both absolutely loved it! Could this be the perfect alternative to van life?

Since Jack and Gabby are passionate about sustainability, they have recently bought a new boat which they are converting into a fully electric, off-grid eco home. Here is a summary of the topics we cover:

  • An introduction to narrowboats
  • The appeals to living on a narrowboat
  • Costs of living on a narrowboat
  • Downsides to living this lifestyle
  • Slow travel, life mantras & mindset

Today we are joined by Dan & Marlene aka ‘Mali Mish’ who have been travelling full-time for the last 14 years with their 3 children & 2 cats. Now in their 15th year with no sign of them stopping their adventures!

During this time they have lived in many different vans, including 7 years in an airstream, all of which has enabled them to travel to 41 countries across 4 continents.

What set Dan & Marlene apart is that they STARTED their full-time travels as a family, after their first child was born, figuring out life as a family on the road, as they went.

And in this conversation, we talk all about

  • Raising nomadic kids & road-schooling
  • Their surprising game-changing van upgrades over the years
  • Van Life Europe vs. Van Life America
  • We shed light on the difficulties & realities of living on the road for a more rounded view of what can often be a glamourised lifestyle
  • and so much more!

They are known as ‘Mali Mish’ online as this translates to ‘Little Mouse’ in Croatian, which was the pet name that was given to Marlene by her grandmother as a child.

This week Jits is parked outside the home of fellow travel YouTubers Sara & Luca, of Leave Everything & Wander. We were welcomed into their home, in the mountains in Northern Italy, spending two days cooking, eating, and enjoying quality time together.

We are excited to extend these conversations with you here. In this episode we cover:

  • Sara & Luca's back story. How they left their high-profile jobs, to pursue a life of adventure.
  • Starting from scratch with a very modest budget, to leave everything and wander.
  • Buying a scrappy camper truck for $800 (that was quite literally destined for the scrap yard), and used it to live & travel all the way from Alaska to Argentina.
  • 6 weeks ago Luca suffered from 3 strokes. And Sara, quite literally saved his life through CPR. We have an emotional conversation about this near-death experience and how it’s shaped their philosophy on life & love.

Lauren & Craig from @nonstoptravelling have been travelling the world full-time since 2008, on a budget, roughing it, volunteering and picking up work as they go - all in the name of adventure; be it with their backpacks or camper vans.

In todays conversation we hear a lot of amazing & entertaining stories from their time on the road, they talk about how much they spend daily & what it’s been like to choose full time travel over taking the more traditional approach to life like following a career and getting a mortgage.

They’re inspiring for us, as we’re about to embark on a bit of a backpacking expedition. We also love their infectious laugher and energy, and know you will too!

This episode we have a very special conversation with Siobhan Daniels, fellow full-time solo van lifer in her 60s who took on early retirement, leaving a successful career in TV & Radio that had become toxic, to pursue a life of self-discovery, defiance and adventure.

She recently published a wonderful book titled "Retirement Rebel", in which amongst other things, she talks about the importance of positive ageing. And how out of adversity comes opportunity.

Talking Points

  • Her motivation for travel & van life, and the triggers.
  • How her strict upbringing shaped her
  • Travelling as a way of dealing with grief & loss.
  • Backing the world solo at 49.

She’s truly an inspiring person, and we absolutely loved our conversation with her. She has so much wisdom to share and we think this conversation has a lot of value for people, whatever your age!

This week we have a raw & honest conversation with fellow traveller, van lifer & YouTuber, Will from Will’s Whereabouts.

Will first started sharing about his travels in Nepal where he was stuck for lockdown. Later when he returned to the U.K., he moved into van life, and since has grown an online community of 200k.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The juxtaposition of solo travel and it’s the fulfilment of self discovery, contrasted by how incredible lonely it can be
  • How YouTube can be a great place to cultivate community but also a toxic sphere that can negatively affect creator's mental health

This week we had the pleasure to chat with Nigel & Sue from @nas_adventures whose mantra is "Adventure Has No Age Limit".

Nigel and Sue have visited over 70 countries between them and 11 together. Nigel is a helicopter pilot and a keen kite surfer and Sue loves mountain biking and off-road triathlons. All sports they took up later on in life (in their 40s). Most recently they have converted a 4x4 sprinter to indulge in van life Australia, documenting their adventures on their YouTube channel 'Nigel & Sue Adventures'.

This week we’re joined by our friend Amy from @van_life_family_ who has travelled the U.K., Ireland & Europe in a tiny VW T4, with her husband Dan, her two daughters who are aged 7 & 10, and their family dog, Luna.

A big family in a tiny campervan who swapped the luxuries of all-inclusive holidays for the simplicities of Van life, spending quality time as a family and discovering how van life allows them to live more with less. In our conversation, Amy opens up about her mental health struggles and how their rolling home has become "therapy on wheels" for the whole family.

So wherever you’re listening from, sit back, enjoy, and don’t forget to subscribe to our podcast so you don’t miss future episodes. We’re here every Sunday!

This week we invite our friend and fellow van lifer @ChallengeSophie to join us in our campervan, Jits, for an honest and in-dept conversation about her journey from self-proclaimed unfit graduate, working in the high-paced corporate world, to an endurance athlete and advocate for the outdoors.

Sophie is the only person in history to have cycled between and climbed the highest mountains in the eight Alpine countries, climbing five times the height of Mount Everest in 32 days. She has also cycled 300km from London to Paris in 24 hours on nine occasions, completed multi-sport adventure races around the world, raced her bike coast to coast across the USA, completed 100km ultra-marathons, and is a two-time Ironman finisher.

As well as her athletic accomplishments, Sophie founded Trailblazers, a project focused on helping school girls build confidence and tackle mental health issues through adventure and community.

We are VERY excited to welcome our FIRST ever guests to the show; our adventurous, inspiring friends and fellow YouTubers, John & Tara Newby, a.k.a. 'The Newbys'

WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN 🎙

When John & Tara got married in Antarctica in 2019, they vowed experience would always trump wealth, and that ‘lines across maps would always be more important than numbers in the bank’. It’s no surprise that their motto in life is ‘Think Big, Be Brave & Explore’. We discuss this motto at length through anecdotes, in hopes that it can inspire you to incorporate it into your own life and decision-making.

THE NEWBYS | A FAMILY OF EXPLORERS!

👱🏼‍♀️TARA: Growing up in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa, Tara spent her 20s indulging her passions working in the safari industry, and hanging out with chimpanzees and lions!

👨🏻‍🦰JOHN: Over the last 20 years, John has explored more than 160+ of the world’s 193 countries. More often than not, he did this on a shoestring budget, hitch-hiking and sleeping on doorsteps, in search of adventure!

👶🏼 BABY CRUSOE: Cheeky 16-month-old toddler, Crusoe, has already been to 23 countries across 4 continents - hanging out with meerkats and elephants along the way.

TRAVEL, VAN LIFE & HOMESTEAD RENOVATION

From world travel, to road-tripping Europe in their self-converted camper van, to off-roading in Africa, to an Epic US road trip, it's been a wild ride for @thenewbys. And now their latest adventure involves them restoring an old abandoned farm in Portugal, to turn it into a sustainable off-grid homestead with next to no experience.

ABOUT THE JITS INTO THE SUNSET PODCAST

We are Tania & Adam, travel filmmakers living on the road in our old ‘jittery’ campervan, Jits. Join us every Sunday (wherever you get your podcasts), as we share insights into what it's been like to quit our jobs, and live on the road full-time. Through our experience and through conversations with others, who like us, have chosen an alternative lifestyle, we set out to pass on lessons learned from other ways of living. We're excited to have you join us!
