Episode

A full week of business ownership is in the books!

This week's episode, I continue the discussion of logistics and infeastructure.

Then, I dip my toe into performance v. brand messaging.

Logistics

  • How to take meeting notes

  • Where to take those meeting notes

  • Taking those unstructured notes and formatting them for distribution and follow up

  • Adding them to a project tracker / reminder for next steps

Infrastructure

  • I'm using Apple Notes, Voice memos and Email to capture notes

  • No CRM (yet) for me!

  • Capturing my notes and remidners in Asana

Performance v. brand messaging

  • I'm not (and won't) leverage paid advertising for performance messaging

  • I see it can be useful for brand or visibility messaging

  • However, I'm focused on 1:1 relationship-buiding

  • And I'm building those relationships through email, LinkedIn DMs, phone calls, etc.

Episode

Well, I did it.

I publicly launched a company this morning.

About an hour ago, I publicly announced my new consulting company, The New Communicate, is now open for business.

While there was a ton of work that went into the launch prior to today, there are a handful of things I've learned that I would do differently next time.

Welcome to hitting the publish button, am I right?

Here are some good, bad and other items from this morning's launch.

The Good

  • Start early

  • Communicate, to an extent

  • Move (and respond) fast

  • Ask lots of questions (prospects, peers, etc.)

The Bad

  • Get your technical doo-dads in order

  • Bumps, bumps, bumps

  • Timing

The Other

  • Be prepped for "Nice, although I would have..." responses

  • Keep that end goal in mind

What's next?

  • Preparing to put me and my business front and center

My audio setup

  • Audio interface: https://amzn.to/46lhmh9

Notes

This was a fun week of writing.

Broadband networks, and telecommunications in general, are topics that I grew up around.

Monday

  • Delivered daily: Broadband

  • However, those plans and some of the funds are starting to roll out. Which means the clock is ticking.

Tuesday

  • Delivered daily: Broadband buildout

  • Even though I’ve seen it up close and first-hand for much of my professional life, I’m continually fascinated by this intricate dance.

Wednesday

  • Delivered daily: Who cares about broadband networks?

  • So, why pour millions into a substandard economic area? Because it’s a substandard economic area.

Thursday

  • Delivered daily: Broadband networks and the killer app(s)

  • With public companies needing to meet (and exceed) the market’s demands and entrepreneurs feeling the need to take on outside funding to ‘scale’ their business, it’s tough to argue the opposite direction.

Friday

  • Delivered daily: The end of broadband networks

  • Maybe the future of broadband networks will be based on specific needs.

Notes

I was in a grumpy mood this week.

At least, as it pertains to advertising.

Monday

  • Delivered daily: Berkshire Hathaway

  • I’m not against all digital advertising. (I swear.)

Tuesday

  • Delivered daily: More AI (and advertising)

  • More backlash against artificial intelligence, this time tying it with two global evils: nation-states and, advertising companies?

Wednesday

  • Delivered daily: Lost opportunities (more advertising)

  • As someone who owns a budget, whether a small one for this site or a much large one for a B2B technology organization, the part about advertising that kills me is the outcomes.

Thursday

  • Delivered daily: The future of advertising

  • Whether these young buyers realize it or not, their purchase habits are shaping how we interact with the data and world around us.

Friday

  • Delivered daily: The end of advertising

  • I always thought the Sun Valley Conference in Idaho was a good model to go after.

Introduction

Have you heard of this AI/Bard/Bing/ChatGPT/Sydney stuff that’s going on? If your feed is anything like mine, you’ve likely seen, read and heard the good, the bad, the confusing and the surprising impacts of AI.

Let’s all agree for a moment that these applications (Bard, Bing, etc.) are sitting “on top” of the technology (artificial intelligence).

In an article about angles (it’s a writing thing), Nathan Baschez made this statement:

For example, last week I was thinking about why ChatGPT broke out now when the underlying AI model is a couple of years old. I realized that the success of DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion helped spread a narrative that AI is exciting right now, which helped prime people to be excited about a new product like ChatGPT.

When DALL-E and Stable Diffusion entered the picture, I started playing around with them both, trying to understand their benefits and overall impact.

I didn’t have a specific industry or role in mind when I was thinking through these impacts. Mainly because I thought they were niche applications.

The more difficult a new ‘thing’ to set up is, the less consumer reach it will have.

From creating new podcasts to building a Substack to immersing myself in niche markets, everything felt fun again.

Much of that niche market research was spent on understanding the future of communications. And with the introduction of ChatGPT, Semafor and other news in the second half of year, everything seemed to topple over once again.

Yet, through all the promised change and coming transformation, I leaned heavily on these two passages:

One of the biggest problems with the Internet is the rampant recency bias. Nearly every algorithm prioritizes what’s new, which pulls people towards news and away from what’s timeless. This recency bias so thoroughly rules our lives that we can’t see it.

It’s all part of modern day marketing. But really to succeed we should be investing in each other. It’s just so much more authentic.

The Indiependent : The slow journey to not syndicating my content

All that thinking and doing and experimenting led me down the road of “what’s old is new again”.

So, I exported all my posts from Substack and imported them into my website. And I now plan on using Substack as my podcast host and driver.

I like Substack for writing, however I get hung up on brand, experience, etc. – all the little things I want to own for myself.

The podcast industry has a discovery and sharing challenge; two challenges that are closely linked. I think Substack has a solution for this (I don’t know what it is yet).

Starting on January 1, 2023…

→ The New Communicator podcast will be refreshed, and available on Substack (and wherever you listen to podcasts)

→ My articles will now be available on my website (and via my newsletter and RSS)

More updates soon.

As marketing and communications professionals, one of the significant challenges we have is connecting our solutions with client and audience pain points. If we only had better insights into those challenges, we’d be able to position our messaging better.

Now, we can help shape those insights by becoming panel members ourselves. Applying to become a Wynter research panelist takes less than five minutes.

Get paid for your feedback (1-15 mins per survey). Join Wynter's research panel. Super low-key time commitment.

This episode…

A few articles I read (and wrote) over the past week have been bouncing around my head. And, I think, they are tied together.

In this podcast episode, I attempt to bring together the following thoughts (and the impact on communications and marketing)…

Change: Staying still doesn’t work for innovative companies (or minds)

Margins: Business folks think in margins and creative product folks believe in more than just marginal changes

Costs: The costs of not changing or thinking big enough may be a short-term decline in sales and a long-term decimation of the brand

Remembering the first computer I bought: It was a Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop. I loved configuring and ordering that thing online. I loved pulling it out of my backpack. I loved assuming everyone was in awe as I hacked away at the keyboard (they weren’t).

I used that laptop all through undergrad and a bit into graduate school. I attempted to keep it going for a bit longer with added memory and a new hard drive.

It wasn’t meant to be.

After cleaning it up, I handed it over to my dad who ended up using it for another five or six years.

Why stroll down computer memory lane?

I was thinking about my recent move to Substack and how it mirrored my switch from PCs to Macs.

My PC era was great. I learned a lot about memory and motherboards and buses and a whole lot of things that are somewhat irrelevant in today’s world. From desktops to laptops to servers to email exchanges, tearing apart and rebuilding those machines was a great thrill.

Then it wasn’t.

Subscribe and receive articles like this by email!

I wanted to focus on productivity and output. I cared less about building a powerful computer and instead focused on ease of use without tinkering.

Hello MacBook Pro.

Easy. Little hardware configuration. Focus on output was front and center.

(While I still do a lot of tinkering, it’s mostly software tinkering these days.)

My switch to Substack mirrored the above.

I felt I was doing too much tweaking without enough output.

If there are no Krispy Kremes in the home, I can’t eat them.

While Substack doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of other platforms, those bells and whistles are the Krispy Kremes: If they aren’t available, I can’t spend my time tweaking or configuring or changing them.

I can focus on the output.

Hello Substack.

(And hello The New Communicator.)

I mention in the episode: This episode was stitched together across a few different times and places, including outdoors (and in a car).

The next episode will include me walking to a coffee shop.

I don't necessarily enjoy the difference in audio quality between recording in my studio and being outside. I do like the variance, though.

If you enjoy either, let me know.
