Jennifer’s starting from scratch, $1000 budget (About $84 a month) to become an Acrylic Painter:
Watercolor Paper, in small sizes
8-12 colors, mid tier paints- Liquitex basics
CHEAP brushes
Find Free courses (youtube, in person gatherings, etc)
After a few months find a paid class. Community College, local academy’s, or an online course.
From there decide on more supplies, or more education
Stephanie’s starting from scratch, $1000 budget (about $84 a month) to become an oil painter:
10 oil colors, I like Gamblin’s 1980’s student grade colors.
Synthetic brushes (5-8) kinds
Masters Paintings soap
Rags (cut up old sheets or towels, make sure to throw them away OUTSIDE when done with your painting day.)
Small bottle of Gamsol (for helping thin paint and remove color from brushes)
Oil primed paper, and flat canvas sheets.
Now find a drawing class! Live models are great, would also recommend still life classes.
Drawing supplies 6B-6H
A sketchbook 8x10 in or BIGGER
An eraser, tape, viewfinder
For the 2nd have of your painting year, look for a color theory/ color mixing class.
That will use up most of the $1000 and get you very far in your art journey!

Ever feel paralyzed by not knowing what to say, to paint, to create? Ever have a blank canvas, a blank audio file, a blank sheet of music staring at you with no creativity in sight? This episode is for you!
Your guide to facing the blank canvas:
Acknowledge that It’s super normal to feel intimidated by a blank canvas.
You aren’t the first to feel this way, you wont be the last.
You MUST create SOMETHING
Letting the blank canvas stay blank is the WORST thing you can do. It’s a bad habit like an infection.
Mess it up!!!
Make a silly mark on the first page, scribble on the canvas, lay a ground- wreck it!
Make a pre-creativity ritual
Tea time is my favorite! Need some looseleaf tea for yourself? Use code CHEERS10 at fridaytea.com for 10% off your whole order.
Clean your space!
A clean space leads to a clean mind for making new art
Warm up your body
Taking care of your physical self lets you protect your creativity years down the line.
Break down your idea into its smallest one-sitting-task
Can you do one of the creative checklist items in an hour?
If yes, do it
If no, break down the step even further.
Make your list of imperfections and weaknesses
Be as detailed as possible in the things you want to improve and strengthen your art work.
Then pick one item and do it.
Take a break
Do something that seems very different than art making, you will get inspired.
Take notes of your ideas as they come to you.
Experiment
Pull out materials you don’t normally work with and play!
Need more advice? Still feeling stuck? Send me a message! Let’s chat.

How to prep for a push period:
Set really specific goals
Prioritize what needs to get done
Set an A list and a B list.
A- Things that MUST get done (The reason you are in a push period)
B- Things that would be nice to get done
Remove normal life boundaries
Make a schedule
Slot in A list items
Place resting times
Select an end date for the push period
Make time for errors and unexpected events
Organize your space, get food ready, etc
Set boundaries with people. Let them know you are in a push period.
How to sustain a push period:
Stay disciplined to your schedule
Respect your rest
Reevaluate your progress each day and change the schedule as needed
Use tools to manage stress- comfy shows to watch while painting, using nice scents in your space, keep yourself clean.
After the Push Period:
Evaluate what you accomplished
Plan rest
Return to your normal schedule
Make a list for what’s next, and don’t plan a time table that is similar to the push period. Give yourself more time.
Want to see what I’ve been working on during my push period? Come to my show at West Seattle Grounds during March, with art walk happening on March 14th, 5-8pm 2024.

I make work about the journeys we take as it relates to human connection, empathy, individual worth, and adventure. I intend for my work to exist where people live, rest and reflect, and connect with one another.
While medium varies based on the project at hand, color and intuition are common threads. My paintings often use nature as motifs for such themes, but I also use textiles and knot tying in soft sculptures intended for domestic and public spaces.

In today’s episode I’ve interviewed the entire November 2023 cohort and asked them 4 questions regarding their experience at the Chateau d’Orquevaux Artist & Writers Residency. We go over expectations, what they accomplished, what they wished they had brought, and what are they going to change in their life once the residency is over.
The artists in this cohort ranged in age from 19 to mid 70’s and were from 4 different countries. They are sculptures, painters, fiber artists, poets, novelists, screenwriters, and more.
I asked them these 4 questions:
What did you expect to accomplish at the Chateau d’Orquevaux residency vs what did you actually end up creating?
What's something you brought or wish you had brought that would have made your time at the residency better?
What are you going to change in your life after coming to this art residency?
What's some advice you would have for someone planning on coming to the Chateau Orquevaux?
All 21 artists had very different answers and advice, a lot of which is specific to what they create. If you are thinking about going to the Chateau D’Orquevaux art residency and have questions, leave a comment!
Thank you so much to my cohort for agreeing to be on Brush Work Podcast!

In November of 2023 I spent a month at the Chateau d’Orquevaux artists and writers residency.
I had applied the year before in hope that the second time was the charm and that I’d get the chance to visit the worlds most beautiful artist residency. Getting in was the biggest delight and saving up the money for it was my driving force for the 18 months leading up to it. Now that I’m home and recovered from the jetlag, I wanted to share with you my personal audio diary I kept while at the Chateau.
This diary is from a few days before leaving, every day at the residency, and a few days after getting back home. I go into detail about what I experienced each day, talk about things I was learning, share tips for people wanting to come to the residency, and more.
See all the tips written out: https://www.stephaniescott.art/2024/1/16/chateau-audio-diary

Brittany Torres likes dragons, wine, and attempting to write her hypothetical book late at night. She braved the college towns of MA to emerge armed with a Bachelor’s of Liberal Arts from Mount Holyoke College and a deeper appreciation for female representation. To no one’s surprise she majored in both English and in Medieval Studies, specializing in King Arthur, Beowulf, and manuscript research. She then went the completely opposite direction to work in self publishing as a graphic designer for book covers.
Skip ahead a couple years and she is now the successful business owner of The Social Atelier, where she coaches fellow artists in discovering the power of their unique branding. No matter the career though, Brittany always comes back to art and the world of fantasy where her too big imagination fits right in.
When not glued to the computer you can find her with a cup of coffee in hand, living a ridiculously fun life with her husband, the firefighter, and their cat, the tiny savage, in their home in Washington State.

The truth is, it takes a long time to learn how to make a living as an artist.
When you are a full time artist, you aren’t just a painter, you’re also a small business owner. I wish we lived in a world where we could just make art and not worry about the rent but, alas. Learning the skills you need to have a profitable art business will come from many different teachers over many years.
Starting an art career is an exhilarating journey, but it often requires juggling between creating art and paying the bills. And honestly, it's wise to find a balance between the two, especially when you're beginning.
The key is to find jobs that not only help with the financial aspect but also give you skills or experiences that can be beneficial to your art career. Ideally, these jobs should be manageable: not draining your energy or time excessively.

The harsh reality of being an artist is that at some point, you are going to be rejected.
The world of a fine artist isn't paved with praise and acceptance. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve been rejected, but I’m pretty sure it’s in the 100s. There is something about the delicious sting of a letter in your mailbox that says “Thank you so much for applying, unfortunately we’ve picked someone else BLAH BLAH BLAH”. Rejection will get your motivation lit like a torch or snuffed out completely.
Today I’m going to teach you how to roll the dice when applying for something you really REALLY want and what to do if they say no.

Since starting The Artist’s Way, I’ve been having a once a week adventure called The Artist Date.
This is a solo date that is designed to feed your inner Artist and boost your creativity.
At the beginning of the program, I was a little lost as to what to do for my artist date. I looked around for lists online and got some inspiration, but nothing that I felt I could immediately do.
Once I got more into the program, I was able to see opportunities for artist dates all the time, and once I went on a few- wow! I was having so much fun with my inner artist.
Even if you aren’t doing The Artist’s Way, taking yourself on an artist date is a really fun and freeing moment of taking care of yourself. I highly recommend pausing the episode when you find a date idea that sounds attractive or thrilling, and scheduling it into this weeks agenda. The more impulsive you are with your artist date time, the better. Let’ me know which ones are your favorite!

Feeding your eyes is one of the most important thing for the creative spirit, and visiting an art museum is a great way to get a punch of inspiration into your work.
Today I’m going to show you how to get the most out of your museum viewing experience and tell you the ‘rules’ I like to follow when doing this myself. I came up with this system in my mid 20’s and have never looked back. I will warn you though, you might feel uncomfortable the first time you do it the Brush Work way.

If you are ever stuck within something you’ve created, its a good opportunity to self critique your work. I ask myself these questions almost ever session that I paint. When you reflect on your artwork, you begin to see the work for what it really is.
Today I’m going to share with you a series of questions that you can ask your artwork whenever you begin to feel like the piece isn’t right.
Is it convincing? If yes, stop here. If no, go down the list.
Light:
Does it have a sense of light?
Is the light white or is the light bright?
Where does the light come from?
Is there an overbalance of dark and light?
What time of day is it?
Atmosphere:
What is the temperature?
Is the atmosphere correct? (does the sky have a curve?)
Is the background outlining the foreground?
Where is the highest point of contrast? (we live on a plant with gravity, if it’s low that makes us uncomfortable)
Geometry:
Do your marks have weight? Is it flat?
Are the edges clear and correct?
Color:
Is your color the correct Value, Hue, and Intensity?
Can you name the color in your head? If yes, make it different (we like muddy colors!)
Is there warmth in the shadows?
is each one of your colors saying “I am light” or “I am shadow”
If you squint, does the picture make sense?
Composition:
Is the composition intentional?
Is your brush stroke depicting what you are painting (i.e. a brush stroke that looks like a single blade of grass)
Does the picture have rhythm?
Where is your eye landing?
Did I crop this correctly? Does it need to be narrower or taller?
Are you putting finishing touches on too soon? (windows in a building, a bird, little dots)
Emotion:
Can you tell what the artist is feeling when looking at your piece?
Does the piece feel lively?
Did I make this because I’m emotionally attached, or because I thought it would make a good piece of art work?
“If you ever think painting is easy, you aren’t painting.”

In todays episode I interview Cassidy Austin for Brush Work. Cassidy is an oil painter who paints the divine feminine through classical techniques with bold innovation. Join us in a talk about the day in the life of an artist, what it’s like to be censored on most social media apps, and what happens when you focus on improving your weaknesses.
“My work represents a celebration of femininity and the strength that comes with embracing one's own body. By portraying women of all shapes and sizes, I aim to challenge the unrealistic and harmful standards that have been imposed on us. Through my use of vibrant colors and textures, I seek to convey the energy and vitality that exists within every woman. My paintings are not just depictions of the body, but reflections of the soul.
My training in Florence, Italy, with its rich history of art and culture, has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the human form and its infinite possibilities. My work is a testament to the enduring power of classical techniques, fused with a contemporary perspective. I believe that art has the power to heal and transform. Through my paintings, I hope to create a space where women can see themselves represented authentically and with dignity, and where they can find the courage to love themselves as they are.
As a woman and an artist, I am committed to breaking down the barriers that have kept us from fully embracing our bodies and our lives. My work is a call to action, an invitation to join me in celebrating the beauty and resilience of the female spirit.” -Cassidy Austin

Today I want to talk about my goals for the new year. Goals for the podcast, for my art business, for my habits, hobbies, and health. I have 10 categories that I write out goals for every year and I thought- what better way to keep myself accountable than to tell all of you what they are and why I’m choosing them as goals.
Set the goal (Read 50 books)
Visualize what it will feel like to accomplish the goal
Set when you are going to do the goal, in it’s one sitting task form (30 min a day)
Set up supports to help accomplish the goal. (2 books a month for book club)

2022 Year In Review
6 Shows, 23 Paintings, and 27 Podcast Episodes later- This is a review of 2022
This year has been WILD. So many unexpected things happened and I was able to have a really successful art year. There have been many adventures and many heartbreaks.
Each year I write out goals for myself and my business. There are 9 major categories and I thought it would be an interesting exercise to go through the goals I had written up for myself in December of 2021 and see which goals I reached, which I failed, and which I no longer wanted anymore.
I’ve been writing up goals for myself for the last 15 years and it’s a cherished tradition. The main categories I look at are: Health, Finance, Hobbies, Home, Art Business (including Twitch & Social media), Romantic relationship, Family, Friends, and Travel.
Some of my goals on here will be very private, but others i’m super willing to share. Shall we see how I stacked up against my ambitions?

Earlier this year I experienced Envy on a scale I have never felt before. Envy that was like an all consuming rage storm of jealousy. Envy that had me questioning “Am I not good enough?”, “Who don’t I know that I’m not invited to things like this?”, and “Why am I being overlooked?”. On todays episode I chat about my experiences with imposter syndrome, being jealous of another artist, and what I’m doing to grow beyond these feelings.

Todays podcast is about how to get started in Oil Painting when you have NOTHING. Say you saw someone doing a cool painting online and you think to yourself, this looks super cool! I want to try it! Whether you are an artist in other mediums, or a complete artistic beginner, this list will help you in getting the supplies you need to have a successful start in oil painting, without breaking the bank.
This list applies to any kind of oil painting. Portraits, Landscapes, Abstracts- whatever you like! At the end of the main list I’ll have a few recommendations of things to get if you are planning on doing a specific genre of oil painting that will help you out, so make sure to read to the end.
Pro tip: If you go to buy any of this at an art store, many will give a student discount. So if you are taking any kind of art classes anywhere (not just a university) say so! You’ll probably get 10% off.

Learn how to clean up after your materials properly! Be responsible with your materials.
Don’t pour your acrylic paint down the sink!
Let it get dirty
Have a ritual around starting your work
Have another ritual around cleaning up your space
Keep your space well stocked for your craft, if you are able to
Be generous with your materials
Have an intention with what your art work is doing
Learn how to be in solitude. How to be alone but not lonely.
Decorate it in a way that encourages you to make art vs being comfortable.
Is the surrounding area easy to be in/get to? Is your space accessible?
Keep it tidy- Sweeping at the end of every session, washing your brushes, having a clear surface, etc
Orient your materials so that the things you use most often are the easiest to reach.
Have a plant! Having something to take care of and is living in your space will get you there more often.
Spill some paint on purpose to get over the ‘white wall fear’
Make a good storage system
A good studio space should inspire you! Hope these tips are helpful~

In 2019 and 2020 I made 25 paintings each year. In 2021 I made 42 paintings. How is it possible that I made almost twice as many paintings 2021? And how was I doing it while reducing my hours?
The answer is Twitch- but beyond that- the answer is a new kind of focus. Want to learn more? Listen to the episode!
“Accountability is the opportunity to live at choice rather than accidentally.
Accountability is the opportunity to carve out the future rather than to sit back and have it happen to you.
Accountability held from a stand as one's word is the ground from which one's own transformation is created on-goingly.
Transformation lives in accountability.
Without accountability, without committed speaking, without promises and declarations, there is no transformation; there is, at best, peak feelings.
A promise has real power.
A promise made from the stand that “who you are is your word” engages you as participant. You cease to be spectator, and your words become actions that actually impact the world.
With a promise, you create a condition that supports your commitment rather than your moods.
When motivational dialogue comes up about your preference versus your commitments, and you disregard the dialogue in favor of doing what you said you would do, solely because you said so, you distinguish yourself from your psychology. In that moment, you are your word as an action, rather than only as an idea you have.
In that moment, the promise becomes who you are rather than something you said; and your relationship to the world shifts. You find yourself producing results that seem discontinuous and unpredictable from the point of view of the spectator.
The experience is one of joy, fearlessness, irrepressible energy, and satisfaction.Accountability is the opportunity to live at choice rather than accidentally.
