The restriction Islam places on female travel is an area of considerable concern for Muslim women living in an increasingly cosmopolitan world. The prohibition of traveling relatively short distances without a chaperone is often seen as impractical and to many ‘irrational’. This is a podcast to introduce people to an essay I wrote on this topic, which is published on my blog- https://ustadnasirrashid.wixsite.com/blog/post/the-issue-of-female-travel-in-the-hanafi-school-a-revised-reading
I argue that while later Hanafis unanimously hold to a set spacial distance of approximately 50-60 miles above which women can't travel alone, this is against the teachings of the founders of the school. We conclude that the travel distance today would be considerably larger than currently assumed. As a consequence (if correct), women can travel across the whole of the UK for example, without a chaperone.
While the argument due to its nature is quite intricate and not easily accessible, I have tried here to present to the public a synopsis to encourage engagement and discussion. I encourage people to read my article in full and to discuss their views.
