A raw and powerful discussion with Tara Grace, known as Burn the Stigma Tara on social media, highlights the seldom talked about dangers of 12-Step recovery, especially for trauma survivors.

Kristin and Tara have a brave talk about what is happening behind the scenes in 12-Step recovery, that is causing damage to some survivors of sexual trauma.

Both Kristin and Tara have been admonished for their honesty about their experiences within the program, making it very treacherous to be open and honest about their experience.

Lifting the veil and telling their truth in this episode, it is their hope that other survivors will be educated and guided to safer, trauma-informed methods of recovery.

When Kristin heard Mel Robbin's talk about the "Let Them" Theory on a podcast, a lightbulb went off in her head. She has (admittedly) been doing it all wrong in dating, relationships and friendships.

She learned about the "Let Them" theory, applied it to her life, and saw a complete shift in how she shows up in the world, and how less complicated her life became. She realized, she was no longer in charge of teaching and instructing people how to treat her, and she can choose her own behavior accordingly.

Kristin also shares a discussion about belonging, and why belonging is so important to us as humans. How to belong without losing yourself in the process is the topic of the discussion.

Kristin and Peggy met when she interviewed Kristin during her Trauma to Triumph Summit earlier this year. In this interview, Peggy bravely and courageously shares with us her own story of surviving incest and sexual assault. We share a similar path, in how our abuse turned into addiction. As survivors, we are well aware that "secrets breed sickness", and she eloquently shares how she was able to overcome her sickness and secrets. **TRIGGER WARNING*

Suicide, suicidal ideation, self-harm, drugs, alcohol

In the wake of our collective grieving over the loss of Stephen "Twitch" Boss, I felt compelled to record this episode about how to help someone who is suicidal. In order to bring you the most complete guideline, I begin the episode by sharing my own experience with suicidal ideation and self-harm at the end of my active addiction, proving that suicidal ideation does not discriminate- it can happen to anyone, even someone who was a volunteer for the Crisis Text Line and the Trevor Project, like I was.

I interviewed Joree Rose, a psychologist and friend, who gave me several tips on how to help your children, students and friends grieve the loss of someone who has died by suicide.

I also interviewed another dear friend, who wishes to remain anonymous, who is a survivor of several suicide attempts. I asked her to tell me what a person who is suicidal truly needs, and her answers were incredibly helpful, courageous and impactful.

Please, please with a cherry on top, share this episode to raise awareness and provide support!!

Trigger Warning: Sexual assault, trauma, medical procedure

Two worlds collided when I met James in a workshop last year. I was honored when he agreed to record this episode with me- the very first time where I have become the "client" on the show. What you will watch unfold in real-time, no edits, is a session where James guided me through some residual stuck trauma in my life and in my body. It is powerful, riveting, enlightening and inspiring to have hope and the possibility of healing this wound. Which we did, gratefully.

James is a Master Coach, and graduate of Elementum Coaching Institute. His life's purpose is to guide people on a spiritual journey into their heart to uncover the pain and trauma that is holding them back from realizing their deepest gifts to the world and to their relationships.

Working mostly with women with histories of abuse, James creates a soft space for the healing process to unfold softly and at the rate and speed that is perfect for each person.

This is a sample of the guided meditation that I have been using nightly to deepen the healing of my trauma wound, as referenced in the show:  https://youtu.be/VtJur7PGUz0

Kristin and Cristina... two moms in an upscale suburban California town that met in a yoga class. Easy to picture, right? The correlation between these two mothers is that both struggled with an addiction to alcohol. From the sidelines of Little League to playdates, their Starbuck's Venti cups were full of Chardonnay, just like a large portion of the other moms in their circles.

In an incredibly transparent and brave conversation, we dissect the messages that we received from alcohol marketing throughout the time we became mothers. Kristin shares how close she was to not being here for her kids, at one point. There are a lot of laughs, some strong emotions, and throughout the entire episode, hard truths about what's really going on with "mommy wine culture" in your little town.

I have a very touching, candid, and brave interview with her adult daughter Avery, and family friend, Rose. Avery grew up with both parents struggling with addiction, and Rose grew up with a father who struggled with addiction. Both women share insights into their relationships with their parents, how it affected them, and what they wish other parents would know about how their alcohol use affects their children. The conversation is bold and there were no stones left unturned- all things were placed on the table. I am certain that you will be as proud of these strong and courageous women as I was! -Coach Kristin

Inspired after watching the Netflix film, "Luckiest Girl Alive", Kristin defines what it means to be diagnosed with PTSD. She goes beyond the actual definition and symptoms and discusses characteristics and behaviors that accompany the diagnosis. Leaning upon examples from her own healing journey from sexual trauma and her PTSD diagnosis, she shares a "bird's-eye view" of what it feels like to live with this diagnosis. In order to offer hope and healing, she also shares different healing modalities that survivors can turn to to help them process their trauma and ultimately relieve themselves of the PTSD diagnosis.

Kristin explains how the first time she heard about the "Gifts of Trauma", she was insulted and furious that anyone could insinuate that there is any sort of gift to our trauma. Upon further consideration, she took the time to tease out what her gifts might be, and how she uses them in the important work that she does within the recovery community and with other survivors of abuse. With added insight from two women she admires, Maya Angelou and Brene Brown, she shares what has been a valuable and ultimately healing lesson on what it means to find the gifts of trauma.

Kristin explains the concept of friendship being like a bank account, including deposits, withdrawals and balance. When we first learn how to make friends, it is often people in alignment with our work, school, hobbies, etc. When we get into friendships while we are using drugs or alcohol, it can be a friendship that is no longer in alignment with us when we are in recovery.

Kristin gives honest suggestions about how to manage friendships, how to untangle from toxic friendships, and how to be a good friend.

"Mommy Wine Culture" is an insidious and pervasive way of conditioning mother's to believe that they need alcohol to function as moms. This advertising is especially aimed at new mothers with young children and infants, though it perpetuates across all ages of mothers and children. Slogans and sayings like, "Mommy needs wine because you cry" and wines with names like "Mommy Juice" are specifically targeting mothers.

Tik Tok's and Instagram reels showing how moms can "hide" their alcohol during kid's sports, PTA meetings, or during online class are plentiful. All of these different tactics are creating an alcohol dependency epidemic amongst mothers that we must bring awareness to. Tasha is a mother in her 30's, to two toddlers, both with special needs. She bravely and candidly shares her experience with addiction, recovery and how the "mommy wine culture" marketing ensnared her. Additionally, Tasha is an adult child of a parent who was addicted, so she has a unique perspective on what it looks and feels like to our children when we are struggling with addiction as mothers.

Listen in on a live coaching episode with a new client, Tona, a 58-year-old woman who has overcome menopause early in her life, has created a healthy vegan lifestyle, and has tried off-and-on with a sober lifestyle. In the past, there was never a set commitment to sobriety, and many factors that would knock her off-course. She is determined and ready to make this time different!

We talk about symptoms of alcohol dependency, how to manage social settings, what to tell people in our inner-circles, as well as overall life balance and setting goals. We talk about motivation, rewards, self-care and managing early sobriety. Mid-way through the episode, I walked Tona through a powerful exercise to help her set down the "bag of boulders" that was failed past attempts at sobriety, shame and self-criticism.

After the exercise, Tona makes a new commitment to sobriety. At the end of the episode, be sure to listen for the update on Tona's first 5 days of her commitment!

Have you ever wondered what a real recovery coaching sounds and feels like? What does the coach ask? What happens in a coaching session? Kristin felt like everyone should have the chance to hear first-hand how the coaching process works with a real-life client that is struggling with alcohol dependency. Amy graciously volunteered to do this honorable work with Kristin- she was so honest, transparent, courageous and brave.  In the episode, you will hear Kristin get curious about Amy's beliefs around alcohol, how being a mom is impacted by alcohol and "mommy wine culture", and how shame and guilt play a role in backsliding, which can lead to drinking or using. This episode is full to the brim with information about recovery, controlling urges and cravings, building motivation and how to find other "cheerleaders" along the way. I hope that you enjoy our session as much as we did!
