In this episode, Mark talks with Scott Schneider, CIH, FAIHA, about how can we avoid an increase in construction workers' injuries, illnesses, and deaths as we upgrade our infrastructure.
Scott Schneider is a Certified Industrial Hygienist. He has worked on occupational safety and health issues in the Labor Movement for 40 years. He worked for the Carpenter’s Union, The Workers’ Institute for Safety and Health, the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) and the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA), from which he recently retired. Over his career, he helped develop standards to protect workers from Asbestos and Silica, fought to protect workers from noise exposure and ergonomic injuries as well as in areas such as work zone safety, fall prevention, and improving safety climate in construction.
He is a Fellow member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and was awarded the William Steiger award by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for his contributions to the field. In 2019, he received the AIHA Social Responsibility Award.

In this episode, Mark talks with Barb Epstien, MPH, CIH, FAIHA, about the dangers that construction workers face every day and what can we do to keep them safe and healthy.
Barb Epstien is one of two industrial hygienists on the Safety Services team of the Associated General Contractors’ (AGC) Oregon-Columbia chapter. In addition to air and noise monitoring exposure assessments and training, she provides general industrial hygiene technical support and outreach for some 600 AGC chapter members, to help reduce construction jobsite health hazard risks. She has 30+ years’ experience in occupational and environmental health that has encompassed consulting, training, and regulatory compliance in a variety of industry sectors.
A long-time active member of AIHA, Barb currently serves on the Construction Committee and also the Women in IH Committee. She was a member of the project teams that recently published Focus Four for Health and Focus on Construction Health: COVID-19.
She was also lead author of the chapter on IH issues in construction for The Occupational Environment: Its Evaluation, Control, and Management.

Savannah Jones graduated summa cum laude in 2019 from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene and Chemistry. She then pursued a Master of Public Health in Accelerated Industrial Hygiene at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she graduated in December 2020.
She currently serves as the Vice-Chair for the AIHA Local Student Section Council.

Ronn Nozoe is a lifelong educator and the CEO of NASSP, an organization dedicated to transforming education through school leadership. Nozoe has served as associate executive director, interim executive director, and senior adviser at ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) since 2015. During that time, he led the development of some of ASCD’s most high-profile programs, including the ASCD Whole Child Network and ASCD Activate, an online professional development library of resources. Nozoe joined ASCD after an appointment as deputy assistant secretary for policy and programs at the U.S. Department of Education, where he worked on initiatives to build state and local capacity in the areas of teacher quality, school safety, rural education, and migrant and Indian education.

Travis Parsons is the Associate Director of Occupational Safety and Health for the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America. At the Fund, he provides an array of safety and industrial hygiene services to affiliates of the Laborers’ International Union of North America.
Travis is a current member of the Virginia Safety and Health Codes Board, which is the body that establishes Virginia Occupational Safety and Health regulations and standards in the Commonwealth. He is a recognized OSHA Master Instructor for the North America’s Building Trades Unions, is a co-chair of the NORA Construction Sector Council’s COVID-19 subgroup, and serves as the Vice President of the Labor Division within the National Safety Council.

- Virginia's standard sets expectations on worksites across the state of Virginia for both employers and employees.
- It is a strong worker protection standard that lays out proven infection control provisions and best practices.
- Specific requirements for employers in the standard vary based on a risk profile, ranging from very high for occupations like health care workers treating COVID-19 patients to low for workers not dealing with the general public and able to maintain social distancing.
- A clear-cut rule lets everyone know how to protect themselves, how to protect their co-workers, and how to fulfill the employers’ responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace.

Ms. Asch has over 25 years of experience in the environmental consulting and industrial hygiene field. Her experience encompasses expertise in field performance, quality assurance, and health and safety. As a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional, Ms. Asch is committed to protecting people's health and safety in the workplace and our community.
Ms. Asch’s expertise includes comprehensive health and safety compliance programs, process hazard analysis reviews, and facility-wide inspections for compliance and hazards, including lead, asbestos, and indoor air quality. For this end-of-the-year episode, Mark chats with Dr. David Michaels about implementing an OSHA emergency standard to help further protect workers during the COVID-19 crisis.
Dr. Michaels is an epidemiologist and Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.
He served as Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health at the US Department of Labor from 2009 to 2017. He’s the longest-serving administrator in OSHA’s history. During the Clinton Administration,
Dr. Michaels served as Assistant Secretary of Energy for Environment, Safety, and Health, charged with protecting the workers, community, and environment around the nation’s nuclear weapons facilities. Much of his research focuses on protecting the integrity of the science underpinning public health, safety, and environmental protections.
Dr. Michaels is a member of the Biden-Harris Transition COVID-19 Advisory Board.

In this episode, Mark talks with Estella Cisneros, Legal Director of the Agricultural Worker Program at California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc (CLRA). Mark asks four crucial questions about how rural farmworkers are currently impacted between the wildfires raging in the western United States and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why are these farmworkers vulnerable to wildfire smoke? What protections do these workers have available to them? What else is needed to protect these valuable workers from this hazard? Estella oversees the organization’s statewide work with agricultural workers, which includes farmworkers as well as those employed in dairies, packing houses, nurseries and meat and poultry processing operations, such as meat packing plants. She is based in Fresno, CA, where her practice focuses on employment and workplace health and safety matters, including sexual harassment and assault in the workplace.
The daughter of Mexican farmworkers from Planada, California, Estella graduated from Stanford University in 2007 and Yale Law School in 2012. In 2013, she was named one of Forbes Magazine’s “Top 30 Under 30” in Law & Policy and in 2015, featured as one of Huffington Post’s “30 Women Under 30 Changing Food.”

In this episode, Mark talks with Bernie Fontaine about how to stay safe playing amateur sports during a pandemic.
Mr. Fontaine has more than 44 years of professional and business experience in regulatory compliance, insurance, national defense, environmental services, and consulting. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), AIHA Distinguished Lecturer and AIHA Fellow.
Mr. Fontaine was also a Virginia-certified high school official before moving to New Jersey and becoming certified by the NJ State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). For past 19 seasons, Mr. Fontaine has officiated everything from Little League baseball to NCAA collegiate games in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. Summertime amateur youth baseball tournaments to college showcases are played across the tri-state region.
Because heat stress is a fundamental health and safety concern, Mr. Fontaine created a Facebook webpage and an assigning model to address this issue, especially for assignors scheduling and officials working summertime baseball.

Our guest today is Ed Primeau, the Past Chair of AIHA's Incident Preparedness and Response Working Group. He was an editor of the Second Edition of the Incident Safety and Health Management Handbook, and just retired from the United States Coast Guard's Atlantic Strike Team where he worked for the past 17 years. Ed's a National Incident Management System Type 1 Safety Officer. During his time with the USCG Strike Team, he responded to numerous multiple agency responses, which included major hurricanes, the release of hazardous materials, and oil spills.
Mark and Ed talk about how can volunteers who are involved in disasters stay safe during the pandemic, and how business owners and leaders prepare for and respond to a disaster during the pandemic.

This episode features an interview with David Beatty, CSP, CCEP, from M.C. Dean, Inc. Mark and David discuss some of the policy points surrounding reopening schools amidst the current pandemic.
David is a senior health safety industrial hygiene and public health professional with over 20 years of experience in the field and is a recent contributor to AIHA’s COVID-19 guidance document for reopening schools, covering Kindergarten through 12th grade. He’s the head of industrial hygiene and risk management for M.C. Dean, a one billion dollar infrastructure systems integration firm with engineering, construction, manufacturing, and sustainment teams operating on six continents.
Dave also served as the head of public health for Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He earned his Bachelors in Safety from Indiana University of PA and Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University.
