Welcome to The Underqualified Thoughts Podcast, where two brothers-in-law have conversations stemming from their daily lives. Expect nothing, everything and anything...
Failing is hard. But failure doesn’t have to be final.
In the final episode of Season 3, Andy sat down with Joseph Tan, the founder of Good Monday Consulting. Joseph helps CEOs and company leaders develop their strengths, culture, and character. And at the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey, he greatly doubted his abilities. Thankfully, he had people around him who believed in him. They listened to his seeds of doubt and planted seeds of hope and potential in him. Those seeds have grown and are still alive today, and so is his company.
Joseph talks about how feedback is the real breakfast of champions. Excitedly shares how playing with Legos helps his clients take ownership of their vision. And tells the story about how he was challenged to become a TikTok Dad. We're excited to share his story with you.
As Andy's job search continues, he is building the life skills needed to be a stay-at-home dad and a home project aficionado. Meanwhile, Caleb has no interest in STAHD life.
They also process the growth of the podcast, how they got off track, and how they plan to get back to what they want. A show with meaningful conversations where the rewards of a good conversation are separate from the rewards of the podcast's growth.
Sit back and enjoy another episode where the two brothers-in-law jabber about whatever comes into their minds.
Life happened…again.
We haven’t gone anywhere. Life just got a bit more complicated than we expected. And we got reminded that we’re not in control.
So today, we’re having another throwback, early episode-style #Underqualified Thoughts conversation where we process what’s going on in our lives. We’ll discuss another layoff in the Sullivan family, more car trouble, and a child who doesn’t sleep.
There will be major tangents along the way, but stick with us. We get back on track each time. And we finish the episode looking forward to the new year with hope.
We hope you enjoy the episode!
Caleb and Andy use episode 8 of season 3 for external processing. What else is new?
In this reflective episode of Underqualified Thoughts, they sit down and dig into their family's Christmas gift-giving traditions. Join them as they candidly discuss the complex emotions and personal experiences that have led to their discomfort with receiving gifts from family members.
From awkward exchanges to the pressure of every Christmas feeling the same, this conversation explores the intricate dynamics of giving and receiving gifts, and the underlying reasons behind their mixed feelings. The episode started off with them saying they hate receiving gifts, but that's not where it ended.
So tune in as they unwrap their family Christmas dilemma, shedding light on their begging question: To Gift or Not to Gift?
In this episode, Caleb surprises Andy with the episode topic. He starts a conversation about social media and questions whether the impact of it can be anything other than negative. The two don't come to a final resolution on the issue, but they share their underqualified thoughts along the way.
And more importantly, they aim to model the conversations where you don’t just talk like, "Haha, I’m on social media for 4 hours." And then you laugh about it and move on.
But the conversations where you go, "I’m on social media for 4 hours. Why am I on there for 4 hours? What could I be doing instead? Do I need to completely cut it out? Or do I just need to think about how I’m going to engage? And then put parameters around that so I don’t go past that…
We hope for you viewers that this thought is triggered in you. And that you take that away and positively impact your community around you.
Tabitha is our 5th guest on the show, but the first guest who is famous.
Known as #TabTheRecruiter today, Tabitha has humble beginnings in retail.
She then found her way into marketing. Before taking a career break to become a new mom and kick cancer’s butt!
With her newfound #strongassmindset, Tabitha entered the recruiting world. Where she has become a household name.
Her most notable industry achievement to date? Interviewing Caleb and Andy during their job search last year.
In a full-circle moment, we welcome Tabitha to the show. The interviewer has become the interviewee.
Check this episode as Tab shares about:
1️⃣ Battling stage 3 colon cancer.
2️⃣ Entering the recruitment industry with no direct experience.
3️⃣ Building a personal brand on (and off) LinkedIn.
And, of course, sharing about how she did all of these things while being #underqualified
Are you generous? It isn't a simple question to answer.
This conversation about generosity is our first attempt at a themed episode. Some things didn't change. Andy went on a few tangents, and Caleb steered him back. Also, Andy accidentally recorded the audio through laptop speakers instead of the microphone that was inches from his mouth. sigh
But something new happened. We had a clear thesis that we built on throughout the episode. And we made a concise statement as a takeaway at the end. Generosity is more than just money. It's about our time, our talents, and our treasures. We haven't listened back to the audio.
We hope the message comes through as clearly as we thought it did in the moment. Either way, we're excited to share this episode with you and hear your feedback.
The season started with amazing interviews where we heard how Lauren and Leslie navigated life when they felt underqualified.
Our initial plan was to try out a new kind of episode where we have a topic-based discussion, but as the saying goes, “life happened.”
Today, we're continuing our throwback, early episode-style Underqualified Thoughts conversation. We're processing what is going on in our lives by chatting about driving a car older than us and an exciting job opportunity for Andy's wife.
There is a hard left in the middle. What else is new? In that, we externally process our vision for the podcast: conversations where we're not too preachy. Then, we get back on track, and Andy gets on a soap box and is a little preachy lol. We hope you enjoy it!
The last two episodes have been amazing interviews where we heard how Lauren and Leslie navigated life when they felt underqualified. Our initial plan for today was to try out a new kind of episode where we have a topic-based discussion, but as the saying goes, “life happened.”So today, we’re having a throwback, early episode-style Underqualified Thoughts conversation where we process what’s going on in our lives. We’ll discuss a shocking layoff, expensive doctor visits, and how one of us filed our taxes incorrectly for two years.
Meet Leslie the Freak. Leslie filmed Caleb's wedding. And Andy's too. Small world. Leslie loves an adventure, no matter how underqualified she is for it. Of course, it helps that she's a freak athlete.During this episode, we learned what it is like to be underqualified behind a camera at a wedding and above sea level flying solo. We also discussed the rise of pickleball and vented about our beach pet peeves. We recorded outdoors, sitting on a deck at beach week. The audio is better than when Caleb and Andy recorded while driving, as long as you don't mind the wind and the sound of construction in the background. With that out of the way, we hope you enjoy the show!
Meet Lauren. The Overconfident.
Lauren met Andy a decade ago at Virginia Tech through Cru.
Lauren met Caleb 5 days ago and is also a transitioning teacher, except in her case, she's transitioning into teaching.
Lauren is often overconfident and usually underqualified. This makes her a perfect guest to start Season 3.
During this episode, we told stories that brought back fun memories, helped us process past hurts, and allowed us to get on our soap boxes. With that summary out of the way, let's stay humble, get low, and be honest. And ask questions. And enjoy the show.
We think this may be the best episode yet. Raw and honest conversations about what is going on in Andy and Caleb's lives. Going to get interesting... The best is yet to come!
