Deeproots Athletics

Welcome to the Deep Roots Athletics Podcast. The main purpose of these discussions is to get very different information out about the fitness industry that is often not talked about or properly understood. We hope to get this information out to help people with not just their fitness, but their lives, because we both believe you can’t separate them from one another. More and more I wonder why fitness is so important to people, Ive realized through Strongfit principles that it is our modern way of dealing with the human condition. We don’t hunt, we don’t scavange and we don’t have the daily stress of life like our ancestors did, fitness brings us back to that in a very rudimentary way. All the love, DeepRoots Athletics

We sit down and discuss a very important topic around how muscles function and the differences between why some muscles "work" and others struggle. It's a crucial part of understanding how to fix movement and help clients move better. The fitness industry tends to only focus on skill of movements. Meaning they try to fix positions and what its supposed to look like rather then creating tension and getting the muscle to be able to work properly before asking it to execute certain tasks.

Jen, Trevor and I discuss a very new controversial topic around GLP1 agonists and the larger discussion that is not being had. The way we see the world is not good or bad, it's about tradeoffs. There is always a consequence to an action, and that seems to be forgotten when discussing this topic.

We don't look at the drug itself, but the issues that aren't seemed to be talked about when it comes to the potential consequences. Science is not an answer, turly it should just make you ask better questions. However, its being treated as if there was an answer therefore people will put the trust and faith into it, blindly.

Obviously we are not doctors, but we do have skin in the game being coaches and seeing this more regularly and seeing the hidden consequences of dealing with how this drug impacts the body.

Competing VS Training and Working Vs Expecting.

We discuss what the difference between competing Vs training, and how important it is to realize how they need to be seperate. We also unpack how and why it can impact you not only as the athlete but also as an individual.

This podcast also looks at what doing the actual work looks like and what peoples expectations are of their performance. We also connect all of this to how important breathing is to movement, and the crucial connection not only to movement but to your body and your perceived environment.

In this episode we continue on our conversation about nutrition and its impact on the nervous system. We bring discuss individually what works for us within the constraints of the protocol, how we eat, and what we've changed. Theres also talk about how recovery from training is not souly based on food, but more the nervous system. If food recovered us, than why wouldn't we just eat more food to get more recovery???

And last but not leas we discuss the importance of digestion, and how it is NOT the same thing as ingestion. Enjoy !

Trevor and I discuss the profound effects that Q-1 has on your behaviour. We explain how to do it, what to expect and how it can help you in your everyday life. We get into how doing q-1 at certain times can help with certain behaviours as well as workouts that can also be done. We lay how it works and the function of doing it properly and intently. This has drastically changed my stress tolerance and helped my mental health in a big way.

There are some fascinating realizations In regards to procrastination and how the mind and body fight to manage energy. This goes beyond a workout, its a tool, to help you manage your life from the perspective of the body.

In this podcast we update you all on what Trevor and I have been doing with Jen in regards to rehabbing her shoulder and what her training looks like.
From car accidents to a subluxed shoulder we discuss the process were taking to address the main structural issues to make her come back better than before.

We also discuss this concept of the credit card affect. The importance of digesting your training over just constantly ingesting, very similar to how nutrition works. The things we do every day and how it impacts our performance in whatever were doing in sport and the gym.

Its a fun one, with lots of our own personal experiences injected into some very basic ideas around training.

Jen Trevor and I all finally get on the podcast and discuss a very interesting and controversial topic on nutrition.

We dicsuss the impact of nutrition on the nervous system and how different macros (protein, carbs, fats) have an impact on the body, mind and behaviours.
There is quite a bit of nuance in food that most people are missing, as always the nervous system is the biggest influencer of how we function day to day. We explain what the nutrition protocol is, what it does, and how it works for the system, training, sleep, and performance.

There will be a part two that discuss more of our own personal accounts and a more anecdotal account of how the protocol has worked for us individually and collectively when it comes to all things training, lifestyle and behaviour.

Trevor and I go into a very profound strongfit idea called no fix November. It's design is simple and developed around better understanding what your body is telling you.

Trevor opens up about his experience with it and how it impacted his behaviour, relationships, sleep, training and day to day life. It's a fantastic listen, and something I have personally done multiple times to better understand certain things about myself.

I discuss and Idea that I find most people in the fitness industry massively overlook. This is the idea of what "Scientific truths" are and how often only look at one structure of evidence. I find that today science is only about data, but thats not the true definition of science, its not only about numbers.

This episode is a bit of a deviation from fitness, however it is also entirely related to fitness. I think we need to get past relying on studies and do our own experiments and stop just looking for information and look more towards creating knowledge.

Coach palo and I discuss a very different approach to all things nutrition. We both talk about our experiences with the protocol and how its evolved over time. Most approaches to food are very simplistic and are often built around attaining some sort of aesthetic goals.

We explain the importance of the protocol on your recovery, your performance, sleep and behaviour. Most people struggle with food a lot, and i've found the only solution to that is far too simple.

At a later date me Jen and Trevor will be sitting down to discuss our experience with the nutrition protocol as well as outline and give details to exactly how it works and why.

Palo and I share a lot of the same principles when it comes to training and coaching, both unique and unorthodox in approach and execution.

This episode we discuss some principles around movement and how the system works.
We also discuss what that looks like around training and coaching tri-athletes. Adjusting behaviour, motives, performance and movement patterns.

We take a deep dive into one of my athletes, and the process I went through to help them go from chronic hamstring, hip and shoulder pain, to being able to run 14 km's with no pain and no repercussions the next day. From fixing chronic imbalances to building up different energy systems and working on some behavioural pieces.

Palo has also some experience with Tri-atheltes and has some interesting and funny stories around that !

A big warm welcome to Trevor.
As of January, he has decided to join the deep roots team and were excited to have him.
He has an extensive background in kinesiology that we are slowly integrating into the deep roots practice.

In this episode we talk about his history with kinesiology, and how he, like most of us learning the strongfit principles for the first time, are completely and utterly stunned.
He gets into his sports history, his journey through school and becoming a kinesiologist.

We also discuss his multiple shoulder surgeries, how he got there and how he got out of it. He also goes into where he thought he'd be after surgery and where he as come after applying the strongfit principles.

Lots of things have changed...Lots of things are changing...

This was an old one from the summer, where Matt and I discuss my approach to fitness, and finally our shared common understanding of how the body functions and what you can do to truly help yourself.
We never always met eye to eye with this stuff, we always got caught in semantics, however things change the more you talk and experience, for the both of us.

It's a long one, we discuss many topics from interoception, Social media, meditation, and matts personal experience with my style of training.
The introduction is changing, I might even just get rid of it, never cared for them, just more work for me on the back end haha !

Anyways, Enjoy, stay tuned for another podcast coming at the end of the January 2024!

Jen and I did a little impromptu podcast a couple weeks back just talking about our current training and fitness.

We discuss our individual paths of our current fitness, what we've learned, what we need to work on, and what we are really enjoying.  Of course this podcast comes a few weeks after Jen breaking her 5th metatarsal on her foot.

It's a short one but always fun.
-Sorry for the sound quality, we did it outside and the mic didn't pick up our voice as well as we wanted to.

I had a wonderful conversation with Pavol from all the way out in Dubai.
We met each other through instagram sharing some sort of content related to Strongfit.  From there we've been in touch and we finally got together and had a lengthy chat about his approach to fitness.

I find that most Strongfit coaches share a lot of the same values and principles towards not only fitness but life also.  We discuss some of those values and approaches surrounding fitness, training, anxiety and the current fitness culture.

Pavol is an extremely knowledgable trainer and a great speaker, we will be doing another one together in the near future, we also may do a few more after that, It was a long one but it was chalked full of great stories an information.

PS, sorry about some of the audio quality, it was my first time doing an online podcast.

Jen and I travelled down to L.A. for a 2 day seminar and a 4 day coaches week withe Julian Pineau from strongfit and Mike Ramirez from divergent fitness.

Jarrett asks us a load of question about what we learned, how we felt, and our whole experience down there.
We also touch on how training actually impact autism, and how the principles I've been learning from Strongfit are crucial for helping this population.

Deep Roots Athletics will be offering more services towards helping people with autism,  I plan on creating a place were underserved communities can access training to help improver their overall life.

This episode we talk about the novelty search and what that means for training and your life.
The Study done in France outlines how they used algorithms in conjunction with AI to solve getting out of a maze (fundamentally, solving problems).

We explain and connect black swan event to your life, and even training, and how they impact the direction and path in which you take, and the impacts of those certain events.

We also talk about the difference between objectives and constraints and how these ideas often get mixed up the in process of going towards goals and what the proper approach to take when creating goals.

Jarrett is back !

We discuss the rest of the Q training and how it can help you with your training and your everyday life.
We will be going back to these at some point and elaborating on them even more.

We discuss Q+1, Disney December, and burn the questions.  All massively helpful tools that can start to create balance within you as an individual and your training systems.

Sit back and enjoy.

Jen and I Discuss how your system functions through prediction and observation, and the impact it has on you day to day and your training.

We get into how the mind is a predictive mechanism and the body is an observation mechanism, they work in conjunction with one another, to manage entropy (karl Fristons free energy principle).  This seems to be the basis in some scientific fields of how the system has evolved and found a way to survive.
All being directly tied back to the nervous system, and taken one step further with the phylogenetic hirearchy (its all interconnected).

The prediction and observation sets the groundwork for so many discussions going forward.

We also start to touch on Juliens Q training, and the importance and impact it can have on your behaviour and relation to energy management.  Ultimately a tool that can help the body and mind realign.

If you want to get into some more depth wit these topics, head to the Strongfit vault (link down below) and go through some of the studies that have been published around these topics. (Were not crazy, this stuff is out there, read for yourself!)

We have our first guest on the podcast, Jennifer Way.

She gives us insight into her life, in regards to sports, training, eating, and her own personal battles with mental health.    .She explains from a females point of few what we find most women struggle with in regards to training, stress, and self image.  It's nice to have a females point of view on some of these principles other than just mine and jarrets.

Jen shares how some of these principles that we teach at Deep Roots have changed the way she trains, the way she interacts with herself day to day, and how she feels about herself inside and outside of the gym.

Thank you Jen for sharing your point of few and your story with us.

An impromptu podcast about some recent events that have occurred in the fitness industry.  Im sure a lot of you out there have heard about the social media influencer "Liver King" and everything that he embodies.
I wanted to use this as an example of how I believe the fitness industry is doing a massive disservice to everyone that is involved.  We have built a system that is based on only achieving goals and objectives rather than learning more about the individual and the human condition.

When the measure becomes a target is ceases to be a good measure.

In no way shape or form am I slandering liver king, this is purely my opinion and ultimately to each their own.   However after reflecting on many other events like this I found myself trying understand how an individual could get to this place, and how this affects and has affected peoples perception of not just fitness but themselves.

There is no good VS bad, its just function, the world is function, our perceptions permeate what we think is good and bad.

Jarrett and I discuss a more complex topic around training and behaviour.
We get into the difference between mindset and behaviour, how mindset cant directly impact change  to your environment in the way you think it does.

We go into one of the main Strongfit principles called the phylogenetic hierarchy, the flow, fight, flight, and freeze and how these states impact your behaviour but also directly relate to your training as well.

We also give some insight into some our clients experiences with the training we do and how their anxiety is impacted by training and what it means for them.

It's a long one, but it's a good one, for everyone trying to understand themselves and how training can impact their lives outside of the gym.

This episode gets a little more complicated, Jarrett and I discuss the function of the nervous system and its basic functions.  This is important to know because this is the powerhouse of the body, without the nervous system life for humans may not even exist.

We discuss the importance of the autonomic nervous system and the main focus of the sympathetic and parasympathetic side.  We are simply just setting up the ground work for further discussions around training and life because we believe the foundation of so much of our existence is tied within the nervous system.

We also touch on the task positive and task negative brain networks, what they are, how they came to be, and the relevance and importance of your sense of self and how it impacts your training.

Its a deep one, but crucial for understanding what comes next.

We start off by talking about a very key principle that is often over looked not just in fitness but in life. Functional integration versus functional segregation, and its common effect on people decision making process. We touch a little about how we see fitness, we talk pros and cons of the fitness industry. We outline the positives and negatives of social media, the lack of depth of knowledge in the industry, passive fixes I.e. medications, steroids, caffeine, pre workout and how we can do all do better as coaches. We also go into depth about much much more, this is was a long one but a great one !

If you notice some weird glitches in the audio, we had to do some editing through some stuff and take a few things out, this podcast ran us almost an 1 and 45 mins but chopped it down to an 1 and 15. hope you enjoy !

Just for a quick recap.

Functional integration is a concept that basically states; when you’re looking at a system, that the system is comprised of many moving parts and that they are all integral to one another, and without them working in conjunction the system starts to fall apart.

Functional segregation states; that you can decompose a system to its individual parts and that the individual part/s will still function the same way as it does outside the system as it does inside. It believes that the system, is just a bunch of separate moving pieces and that you can take them out of the system and they will still behave in the same manner

I guess its official, our first podcast !

I Have always wanted to do this ever since I started listening/watching them when I was in college, and here we are.

Jarret and I give a bit of background history into our lives but mostly our relation to movement and everything fitness.  We break into some topics such as when we first got into a gym, our first trainers/gyms, crossfit, why we keep doing fitness, and what fitness has brought into our lives and much more !
