I like to think of my life's experiences as research. From that perspective, I immersed myself for the last 8 months in the study of formal hair education in Florida.

As a woman with textured hair, I wanted to pour the wisdom that I have amassed, into upcoming hairstylists. By the number of new students enrolling in schools, it is safe to say that the hair industry is still thriving.

Based on my experiences I was able to confirm things that I already knew and discovered new realities in hair education.

Season 2 of Hair Talk is a dedication to the time invested, the beautiful students I got to experience and the journey moving forward for Textured Hair Education.

In this episode we deep dive into the unique hair care journey of a woman who entered my hair care world with a single question in mind; Can my natural hair look professional? Schinelle Dyer allows us to explore her hair care journey as she gets into the challenges, that many women experience, with their natural hair. She takes us through shampoo day and how long it previously took, discovering the right combination of products for her unique texture and the evolution of her mindset of allowing herself to be supported by a hair care professional. She sheds light on her family's observation of how simply her hair is styled after a hair care session. They also notice the reduced time of her shampoo day routine. Hair Care Support is not Hair Styling, it's empowering women to care for their hair. Schinelle is now in a space of beautiful ownership of her hair. My hope is that this woman's journeys restores a connection, with pieces of yourself, that you may  have left behind because of the frustration of navigating your natural hair. In episode 4, I hold sacred space with a client I am deeply connected with, Nichola Guy. She allows us to explore her hair care journey, from childhood to present, where she stands in a greater awareness and acceptance, that she is equipped to care for her hair.

As a child, she has always had long, thick hair, which in Trinidad we call, "a full head of hair". Her earliest hair memories consists of tangles and puffy hair. Nichola. like previous guest is this season, has also been down the path of altering her hair's texture, as a child, using relaxer.

In her unique adult journey, she has experimented with a myriad of hair styling options from braids, to weave, which she recalls, required her to cut the perimeter of her hair to blend in to her hair. All with the intention of 'not having to comb her hair'. Before working together she held two fundamental beliefs;

  1. Don't colour your hair because relaxer and colour does not mix.
  2. How you treat your hair is how your hair will be.

We've co-created many hair goals together over the past few years as she feels safe in my approach, to lead from healthy hair first. Nichola's hair care plan included hair care sessions, texture altering sessions, event styling and of course, her hair colour upgrade.

She has gained more confidence and self trust in her home care skills, as her work schedule demands, were infringing on her professional hair care sessions. This also meant that she was required to be camera ready. Nichola had to get in the drivers seat of hair styling, as she travelled internationally. We cultivated a digital support system where she shared all of her successful looks; morning hair styling was functional for board meetings while evenings had more elegance for dinners with colleagues. Nichola was secure in endeavors as she referenced the chosen looks, from our previous hair planning session. Hair styles was paired with wardrobe, we were mindful of outlining the effort required for each styling option, in the event of a spur of the moment change.

We dived deeper into her hair care journey as we explored how curls have become a part of her identity. She still enjoys the duality of both curls and straight hair styles, which gives gives a degree of separation of her personal life and professional life.

Nichola is now in a season of ease about her hair and feels secure in her ability to care for her hair, even if she does not have a desire to do so when hair care support is available.

If you desire long term hair care support, we begin in Hair Freedom, with discovery.

Episode 3, we go down the hair care path with a powerhouse. Leekeesha Duncan has played a significant role in my development and we have shared many spaces and hats over the years, which makes her ideal to explore the generational relay of hair care. She was generous to open up her fond memory of her mom weekly routine approach to her and her sisters hair care, inclusive of bubbles and clips. She came into her awareness of her responsibility of caring for her hair in her teenage years and because of a lack of understanding she opted for texture alteration, a relaxer. In hindsight, she now stands of the premise that she is most beautiful in her natural hair. Leekeesha is a light to behold, her essence is infectious and her hair has played a significant role in encapsulating her feminine energy + power. She wore dreadlocks for years and dealt with the negative stigma associated with that hair style. We touched on her experience exploring hair accessories in the professional space. Leekeesha's daughter, Zahara, has also been in hair care sessions with me, she has absorbed so much of my guidance and is now actively caring from her hair from an informed space. The gift of hair care is something we pass on, it is assimilated whether intentional or not. Thankfully I held an integral space in the transfer of hair care wisdom between this mother and daughter.

If you desire to walk through your hair are journey with your daughter or mom, or simply do this path for you, DM me on instagram. Let's co-create on your hair care through hair discovery.

In episode 2, Andreah Baksh, my dear friend and client, and I deep dive into her unique hair care experience. I am honored to hold this sacred space with her as we explore all of the influences that intricately make up her hair care journey.

She shares a common Caribbean experience where mother's were unable to manage their children hair as thier hair texture changes around age 8. They turn to texture alteration, relaxers or texturizers for ease and convenience.

We explore her experience as a girl with long hair and how fascinated our Trinidad culture, openly expresses their admiration, even to a point of discomfort. Andreah openly expressed that even though her hair was long, due of her ethnic makeup, she was uncertain on how to care for it. She had a significant amount of split ends, which she kept because there is a negative connotation with hair cutting in our culture. I chimed in with my childhood memory of how my grandad played with my hair.

The upsurge of information and interest in natural hair care became a stimulus for her to get better at caring. She had a deep desire to aware and skilled in her day to day hair care. This lead to her going back to her natural hair texture and how she was met with her family experiencing it.

I touched on the nuances of a transition from a texture alteration back to natural hair and the role of the climate, in particular humidity in that experience.

Andreah's hair care journey is so rich, women can identify with varying parts her hair care journey.
