When you have high functioning anxiety that cycles through your life, it's important to have the ability to step back, to take a step back from your situation, and just look at your situation from a higher level vantage point. Welcome to the 44th episode of our podcast, Warrior Words of Wisdom with Heather Gaffney: Navigating Trauma, Cultivating Connection, and Growing Stronger Together. In this episode Dr. Hartwell was interviewed by Heather, who started her podcast, The Warrior Words, which is all about, hearing stories from Warriors, who share their battles, the ones they won and the ones they lost and their journeys and the lessons they learned along the way. Heather talks about finding the “Beauty in the Broken”. Whether it’s an abusive marriage, a serious illness, a mental health crisis, or any number of traumas this world dishes out, Warriors use their Words to help find the beauty in the broken, moving beyond battles and becoming the “Thrivor God created you to be.” I love how Heather says, “let’s pick up our swords - or boxing gloves - and join together in battle, your words are powerful, and we should all make them Warrior Words!
Mahalo and stay tuned for more inspiring episodes ahead. I would obviously be eternally grateful if you would leave a review on Amazon. Forever wishing you and hoping you focus on Cultivating Professional Success! Aloha!

I was honored to be a guest podcaster on my fellow adoptive parent across the pond, Tim Maudlin, on his podcast, Anchors of Encouragement. We discussed to topic of secondary trauma and its role in adoption, as an adoptive parent and for adoptees themselves. There's a lot of amazing gold nuggets in this one. Enjoy!
Dr. Hartwell
“I could not picture myself being exposed to trauma again. I just couldn’t. And you're talking to somebody who was very adept at managing exposure to trauma as an emergency nurse, as a flight nurse, and as a psychologist in prisons… So I’m pretty good and adept at it. But boy, it emptied my cup!”
Hi Neighbor,
Returning as a guest on this episode of Anchors of Encouragement is my neighbor from Hawaii, Dr. Lisa Hartwell. Dr. Hartwell is trained to identify and help others heal from their trauma. But even she personally understands how emotionally draining trauma can be.
I hope you’ll listen to our conversation as Dr. Hartwell shares her story, defines secondary trauma, and shows us 3 ways you can begin to navigate the challenges it presents.
Hope and Healing are on the way.
Your Neighbor,
Tim
P.S. If you found the information in this episode helpful, please share the podcast with a friend. Thanks, Neighbor!
Dr. Hartwell was also a guest on Episode 50 – How to Understand Grief In Your Adopted Children and How To Love Them

By shedding light on these differences, we aim to foster a more inclusive and empathetic society that can provide appropriate support to individuals experiencing anxiety. Recognizing the degree of anxiety, responses to anxiety, and the visibility of anxiety to others are crucial in navigating the complexities of anxiety and promoting understanding.
We will discuss the Degree of Anxiety in High-Functioning Anxiety (HFA) is characterized by individuals experiencing significant anxiety while still managing to continue with their daily activities. HFA individuals may describe their anxiety as a constant companion, always present but not overpowering. The Response to Anxiety:
HFA individuals tend to respond to their anxiety by channeling it into productivity. The Noticeability of Anxiety to Others, which is for individuals with high-functioning anxiety is their ability to mask their anxiety symptoms. It's not that anxiety keeps us stuck—because that's not who we are. We're performers, we're doers, and we push through. However, internally, anxiety can take its toll, and that's something many of us have experienced.
So, let's dive into Tash's journey, both in her business and her personal life, and explore how these two aspects intersect and influence one another.

Welcome to our 21st episode where we will explore the irony of when our high functioning anxiety seems to kick in when GOOD things happen in our life! Many of us think high functioning anxiety only happens when we experience tough things. This year has started out with amazing opportunities and every month all this “goodness” has continued. My high functioning anxiety has come along for the ride. Listen in to hear the one easy step you can take to stop it in its tracks, so you can be present and truly enjoy when positive events happen in your life. Remember, your brain is there to protect you and it thinks ANYTHING new is a threat. We have to train it to be discerning when something is actually a good thing for our lives.
Let’s encourage each other to continue to always grow and evolve.

Welcome to our 20th episode where we will explore the fascinating way in which one thought can lead to another and teach us a valuable lesson in the process. It's a journey of self-reflection and learning that we all can benefit from. Our minds are incredibly powerful, and the way we think can impact our lives in ways we may not even realize. Sometimes, a single thought can trigger a cascade of other thoughts, which can lead to a profound realization or understanding of something we need to learn. In this episode, I share how a random observation led down a path of introspection about my journey with PCOS. It is fascinating to explore the science behind how our minds work and how we can use these moments to truly offer insights to help us harness the power of our thoughts to delve into the self-discovery. Get ready to be encouraged and learn how one thought can lead to another and teach us the lessons we need to grow and evolve.

This is episode 019 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. Welcome to our podcast, where we discuss the importance of self-care and how it impacts our relationships with others. In this episode, we explore the idea that taking care of yourself is not selfish, but rather an essential part of caring for those around you. the practice of self-care is not just about superficial activities like taking a bubble bath or getting a massage. If we go deeper and have an understanding of how things are happening in the moment, we can contribute to our overall self-care. This includes developing emotional intelligence, being present and mindful, and actively engaging in self-reflection. By doing so, we can gain insight into our own needs and values, which can help us make more intentional choices about how we care for ourselves and others. Remember, self-care is not just about treating ourselves to a spa day; it's about creating a sustainable lifestyle that supports our overall well-being. Thank you for joining us today, and we hope this episode has given you some valuable insights into the importance of self-care as other care. This is episode 018 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. I wanted to share what it's like to have high functioning anxiety while writing a book about high functioning anxiety! Yes, it’s true. I felt it the entire month of March and I pushed through and did what I wanted to do even with experiencing high functioning anxiety. I want to encourage you to learn from my experience of writing my next book (due out in August 2023) about high functioning anxiety and help you learn what choices we may all be falling back on when our high functioning anxiety is at an all-time high. This time, it was about focusing on the concept of Pivot, which means we just look at something as a shift, a small shift in our current trajectory. This helps our anxious brains accept what is to come down the road without feeling frozen in place. We always want to get to know ourself and what our soul's desire is, to know and discover what is our next step of growth. Pursuing a new endeavor with using the word “pivot” creates an ease on our brain to support those of us with high functioning anxiety. Aloha everyone. Welcome to Anxiety Ease Podcast Episode 16. Let’s talk about perseverance and what that means when your high functioning anxiety interferes with that, which is a real thing, isn't it? There's just so many things that happen in people's lives and they think, okay, “what's that turning point that I'm not going to give up?” When do you ACTUALLY decide you are going to finish what you start?
When you think about giving up, when is it that your anxiety says, “oh no, go back to being comfortable, going back to being miserable, because that's where you're safe”. But perseverance is referred to as moxie, it's having grit. It's the stick-to-it-ness. And therein lies probably some of the issues with those humans with high functioning anxiety because really, the anxiety wants to keep you safe. It doesn't want you to venture out and take a chance that things might not work out in the future. Or be different. Or better. That’s too much of a risk.
To persevere means you have the ability to follow your dreams and go after these goals while you're managing and overcoming the setbacks failures and obstacles that you possibly could encounter.
Enjoy today's episode!
Wishing you ease & grace,
Dr. Lisa Hartwell

This is episode 015 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. This is a second part guest podcast interview I did with Tim Maudlin from the podcast Anchors of Encouragement with Tim Maudlin: Biblical Mindset Support for Adoptive Parents. Our first interview together was for Episode 014, all about the personal experience on how high-functioning anxiety shows up during the adoptive parent journey. Tim was so gracious to share his heart and his story. This time, we talked through a few ideas how the clinical (brain & heart) side of adoption may be a part of your adoptive child’s journey. Or not. It is unfortunate that there is a vast difference of how adoptive parents are supported and prepared during the adoptive journey. Then subsequently, how to parent when adopted kiddos struggle during various stages of their development. Our hope is you are encouraged and reach out if you need support during any part of the adoption journey. It takes an orchard as you know I always say! What a treat to connect, learn and lift each other. Enjoy today’s episode!

This is episode 014 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. This is a very special interview I did with Tim Maudlin from the podcast Anchors of Encouragement with Tim Maudlin: Biblical Mindset Support for Adoptive Parents. I reached out to Tim, essentially from a “tap” on my shoulder to re-connect with him. Sometimes my soul whispers to me and other times it shouts to “do what you can now” (Tim’s motto!). We have been in various similar Facebook groups, so I knew a little about his story of adoption. He started his podcast during July 2022. Go have a listen at all his episodes for support and encouragement at www.anchorsofencouragement. You’ll see why my soul wanted us to have a heart connection: as podcasters, humans in business, additionally as mutual adoptive parents. You’ll hear our stories of how we became adoptive parents “across the pond” are very, very different as well as our parenting journey’s. There is many, many adoptive parents out there who should never feel alone in their journey to become parents and our hope is you are encouraged and supported. It takes an orchard as you know I always say! What a treat to connect, learn and lift each other. Enjoy today’s episode!

his is episode 013 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. I’m so excited to share a very special interview as a podcast guest on Her Renewed Strength with Erika Diaz-Castro. Erika and I met online and connected over our common interest in helping women professionals with anxiety and our faith. She has been a coach for over 10 years, including fitness and nutrition coaching for competitive athletes, weight-loss coaching and life coaching. More than that, I was struck by Erika’s story of resilience and her joy that she oozes with when you meet her. Then when you hear her story of living through cancer with TWO young children, learning how to become even more efficient and effective with serving others and her God, reflects someone who truly embodies what it means to use anxiety as your ally. What a treat to connect, learn and lift each other. Enjoy today’s episode about how to normalize and differentiate high-functioning anxiety from clinical anxiety.

Happy 2023 a new year! Today is all about coming into this year with more ease and grace, how to be calm, cool & collected. Aspirational, huh! Let's face it, we all have big dreams. You're working to plan those big goals in life. In fact, you're probably making significant progress in your life, or you're about to. If you're a high achiever, you're ready to take on the world, right? But the question is, if it's all going so great, how come you're here as a high-achiever with high-functioning anxiety? That goes for a lot of us, by the way, you are SO not alone.
We’re trying to make it easier with ease and with more grace and stop the hustle. But, let’s be honest, we still like that one part of us that's high-achieving, right? It feels GREAT to achieve. The dopamine rush is real. But by now, you've probably discovered the downside to success at certain times of your life. High-achievement definitely leads to high stress. You're rushing from one thing to the next, and you barely have time to breathe, much less collect your thoughts. You're living in a frantic, even possibly hectic life. And something's got to eventually give, right?
Well, listen in for a few ideas you can start to still be high-achieving, just with a little more calm and ease.
Enjoy today’s episode.
Wishing you ease and grace,
Dr. Lisa Hartwell

This is episode 11 of the Anxiety Ease podcast.
Aloha everyone. Welcome to Anxiety Ease Podcast. I hope you've been enjoying the holiday season. I have a good one for you today. This is how joy and stress can work together, even during the holiday season! Even if that seems imaginable! I always think of joy and stress, or a lot of people do, that they are not compatible, from the opposite ends of the spectrum actually. Right? Especially during something like the holidays (which seems to start earlier and earlier every year). So I want to talk today about how sometimes that it feels that there's just no way that you can enjoy the holiday season with all the to-do’s. I call them my ta-da’s! How can you do your list with absolute joy and also when you have accompanying stress with that? I've got four things I want you to think about today on how we can all get better at managing our high- functioning anxiety, especially during the holidays. This first one I want to talk about and the first two actually relate to joy and the second two relate to stress.
Enjoy today's episode!

Dr. Lisa Hartwell

This is episode 010 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. This is our final, day five of our 5-day mini-series for professionals to calm the chaos of high-functioning anxiety. This is a special interview series that I did with Katie Dahl on her podcast called Hi, I'm Anxious.
We're talking about creating an Anxiety Mastery Plan for Your Life in this episode. The idea is that, at some point, we want to accept high- functioning anxiety is on a continuum and that the goal is really to accept the concept of approaching your high-functioning anxiety with reflecting and pivoting. This should become a habit for you, opposed to something that makes you feel stuck when it's time to grow in your life. And by having an individualized strategy, you have this concept of competence that increases your confidence. Confidence then opens your brain pathways to learning and practicing discernment so you no longer feel stuck in the cycle of high functioning anxiety. I hope you enjoyed this series and this last episode. I really had a lot of fun doing these interviews with Katy, and I hope to do more of these with others on various topics. It is so much fun to just talk story about these concepts and really ground it in story and metaphors for all of us to better relate to each other and ultimately support one another. Enjoy today's episode!
Wishing you ease & grace,
Dr. Lisa Hartwell

This is episode 009 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. This is day four of our 5-day mini-series for professionals to calm the chaos of high-functioning anxiety. And this is a special interview series that I did with Katie Dahl on her podcast called Hi, I'm Anxious. This fourth episode is all about how to Apply High-functioning Anxiety Skills to Grow and Develop Daily. The goal that through practice, results in actual neurobiology changes in the brain. And this includes both physical and chemical changes that in turn rewire, to where you can feel like it's so much easier while you use your anxiety as your ally to make changes in your life. And frankly, high-functioning anxiety no longer stops you in your tracks. You will see that the magic is truly in the togetherness as we partner with our high-functioning anxiety to make changes in our lives. That's truly the goal. We had a lot of fun with this episode again. So, I hope you enjoy our conversation!
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you the foundation of high-functioning anxiety!

This is episode 008 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. This is day three of our 5-day mini-series for professionals to calm the chaos of high-functioning anxiety. And this is a special interview series that I did with Katie Dahl on her podcast called Hi, I'm Anxious. This third episode is all about Assessing your Continuum of Stress to High-functioning Anxiety to Burnout. We do that by assessing your continuum of stress, from stress to high functioning anxiety to burnout. It begins with assessing how you determine if you have high functioning anxiety (HFA)? How do you know you have HFA versus if you are just stressed out, are you actually clinically anxious or do you have burnout already? We are going to have a conversation about why you may or may not be getting help and what that looks like. We also discuss how we get our brains wired over time to react the same way. The message is always built on a foundation of hopefulness, and the great news is that our brains are malleable and we actually need some stress to grow in our lives. Even though this seems like an oxymoron. We had a lot of fun with this episode.
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you the foundation of high-functioning anxiety!

This is episode 006 of the Anxiety Ease podcast. I have a special treat for you. We have a 5-day mini-series for professionals to calm the chaos of high-functioning anxiety. And this is a special interview series that I did with Katie Dahl on her podcast called Hi, I'm Anxious. And we talked about a lot of fun things over the course of five episodes. This first one is 3 Steps to Manage High-functioning Anxiety. And what we're really looking at are topics like, “how do we look at freedom from anxiety running your life”? “How do we normalize this concept of high functioning anxiety”? “When is the time and how do you actually get help if that's in the process for you”? And, this concept of “new level, new devil” whenever you start upgrading your life. So, let's get started and into it. This is day 1 of this 5-part mini-series.
I hope you enjoy it! (as much as we enjoyed creating it for you!)
In this episode you will learn the important steps of recognizing and identifying anxiety for yourself as a process that leads to anxiety being a signal for growth so that you can determine the best support solution for you.
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you the foundation of high-functioning anxiety!

In today’s episode 005, Rewiring Our Neurons with our Souls Grace, I love this topic, and I can't wait to share with you about why tips, tricks, and advice don't necessarily always work in the long term. This is really the core and the crux of the balance of all of this brain nerd stuff that I do all the time. I love talking about our soul's grace. One of the things that I always say, is no matter how many tips, tricks, and advice that you can get anywhere, there is so much that you could just Google on either high functioning anxiety as well as clinical anxiety. There is no amount of tips, tricks, and advice that you could use that's going to commit to long term change. It isn't until you start rewiring your neurons at the basic core of biology that's the behind the scenes of what's happening in your growth management.
In this episode you will learn:
· Definition of grace
· Self-grace as part of our growth management
· How “Being Still” creates new neuro pathways by pairing ease with self-grace while you experience high-functioning anxiety
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you the foundation of high-functioning anxiety!

In today’s episode 004, 3 Ways to know the difference between High-functioning Anxiety and an Anxiety Diagnosis, we talk about the differences between the two categories of anxiety. One of the things I want to go deeper into this topic, is because there are subtle nuances. But here's the main difference and the “why” it matters. It's more likely that people with an anxiety diagnosis will either eventually reach out to get support and help from somebody, rather than somebody with high-functioning anxiety who tends to keep it to themselves and “push on through it”. The difference is somebody with high-functioning anxiety over time wears them down and over time that can show up in ways that affect you mentally and affect you physically, affect you spiritually.
How anxiety shows up and the observation of how it looks to the rest of the world can be vastly different. But the differences in the degree, your response to the anxiety and how it's noticed is really the differentiating factors between high functioning anxiety and a diagnosis of anxiety.
Be sure and click on the link below to find out where you fall on the continuum of anxiety with the Hartwell Anxiety Assessment quiz.
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you the foundation of high-functioning anxiety!

In today’s episode 003, we are going to have a very special podcast guest, Sarah Richardson a running coach who lives in Vermont. We are going to be talking about the reciprocal relationship between running and high functioning anxiety. Coach Sarah is going to be sharing her experience with high functioning anxiety and how she has integrated the process and the experience of running. It is amazing to hear how the teacher became the student as she recovers from a recent fracture this year, which gave her the space of time and self-grace to heal and get back to running again. So come and join us to learn about the reciprocity between high-functioning anxiety and exercise (runners, walkers, anyone who uses exercise to help with their anxiety!).
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you the foundation of high-functioning anxiety!

In today’s Episode 002, we’ll talk about the science and soul strategy of shifting high functioning anxiety. You know, one of the things I found through the years is it's so important to follow a strategy. It's so important to follow a process. And when you think about any kind of learning that takes place, whether it be learning how to manage your anxiety or whether it means learning how to learn a new language, maybe how Chinese is foreign to you, or learning how to drive a car, anything, even learning Excel spreadsheets! Just think about all the different things that you've learned in your life of learning the process, of how to overcome something that seems so new and foreign that pretty soon becomes automatic.
Let’s change anxiety management to growth management
In this episode you will:
· Learn what it means to use anxiety as your ally
· See how using the 4 pillars strategy is the ease in a growth mindset
· Ask questions that lead to discovering your soul’s desire and what that means for you (that is different than anyone else!)
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you some ways to rethink how you view your personal experience with high-functioning anxiety!
Wishing you ease & grace,
Dr. Lisa Hartwell

In today’s Episode 001, we're going to talk about freedom from high-functioning anxiety running your life. This is to help you get unstuck when overwhelm just really seems to be running your life. And we want to get to the point where we normalize it instead of having it overtake you, especially feeling like it's helpless that things are never going to change. I also want to spend a little time today talking about behind the scenes of what's happening with your high-functioning anxiety, when it's time to get support and get you unstuck.
In this episode you will:
· Look at ways you can self-assess your current high-functioning anxiety
· Shift expectations of how fast or slow change happens and why
· Learn three ways you can consider getting support for your high-functioning anxiety and most importantly, when should you get support
I hope this podcast show and episode helps give you some ways to rethink how you view your personal experience with high-functioning anxiety!
