Dear listeners, thank you for tuning in to the Our Cultures & Our World podcast. In this heartfelt episode, I had the pleasure of talking to Jinfeng Shen, a psychotherapist born in China who made the Netherlands her home 15 years ago.
This episode holds a very special place in my heart because over the past year, I've had the honor of volunteering with the non-profit Foundation, co-founded by Jinfeng. I'm thrilled to share the foundation's inspiring backstory with all of you.
During our conversation, Jinfeng and I explored the differences in parenting practices between Chinese and Dutch parents. These distinctions shed light on the unique and often complex challenges that Chinese immigrant families face while living in the Netherlands.
Jinfeng emphasized the utmost importance of understanding cultural backgrounds and empathy in helping these families. We discussed the mental health challenges young people face in today's world and the vital role of empathy, compassion, and community support in overcoming them.
Jinfeng's journey also led her to co-establish the Foundation Intercultural Participation of Chinese Families in the Netherlands, alongside her good friend, Jina Zhong. This non-profit organization provides guidance and support to Chinese families through various activities, workshops, and events. Through shared experiences, Chinese families have found support, understanding, and a sense of belonging.
My experience of connecting with and supporting Chinese parents over the last year has greatly enriched my life. So, I want to invite you to join us in building a warm and loving community to support each other. Together, we can help many families and children live healthy and happy lives!
If you would like to support the Foundation, whether through donations or volunteering, please reach out to Jinfeng. The contact details are in the show notes.
I can't wait to share this heartwarming conversation with all of you! Enjoy!

Dear listeners, welcome back to Our Cultures & Our World podcast. I hope you had a wonderful summer. In the first episode of this season, I had the pleasure of talking to Ian Mote. Ian hails from London and has been living in China for 15 years now.
In our delightful conversation, we delved into the origins of not one, but two of Ian's books. His writing journey commenced with travel stories capturing the essence of his adventures as he traversed all of China's provinces. 'From Chicken Feet to Crystal Bath – One Englishman’s Travel in China' marked his first book, published in 2015.
Ian's second book, 'Ginger in Her Socks,' takes us on a humorous and personal journey through his life in China, delving into the complexities of parenting influenced by both Western and Chinese cultures.
Ian shared with us the cultural differences he encountered in parenting in China, emphasizing the significance of Ayis, the term for Chinese nannies, and Chinese family members in caregiving, as well as the challenges posed by the Chinese education system. We also discussed the therapeutic benefits of writing and the value of vulnerability in storytelling.
Later in the episode, we dived into Ian's experiences as a senior finance professional in China, exploring how he navigated cultural differences in his international career. He shared insights into the dynamic changes in China's financial landscape, the importance of building strong teams, and the significance of cultural understanding and interaction when conducting business in China.
It was a lot of fun talking to Ian, and I learned a great deal from him. I hope you will derive immense value from this conversation. Jacco Bouw is a marketing technology expert who founded WebPower 24 years ago, just 2 years after he graduated from the university. WebPower is a marketing technology company specializing in email marketing. Ten years ago, Jacco also founded Agency China, which is specialized in social media marketing.
In this podcast, Jacco shared his journey of expanding his business to China in 2006 with a mission to bring marketing automation technology to the Chinese market.
“I can write one book about all my failures!” Jacco told me. But with persistence and strategies, Jacco succeeded in scaling up his business in China three years after he started there.
For years, Webpower and Agency China have been serving many customers and famous brands from Western countries and China with their marketing in China. It was fascinating to hear about Jacco’s journey, about cultural differences, different speeds of getting things done, and different ways of problem-solving.
Furthermore, we also talked about the impact of AI on marketing technology, and the future of work and education. It was a lot of fun to share with each other about the changes we both saw in China after not being able to visit China for more than three years because of Covid.
I really enjoyed this conversation and learned a lot from Jacco. I hope you will also get many insights from him. So, have fun and enjoy the conversation!

This week I had the chance to talk to my good friend Bei Wang in Our Cultures & Our World Podcast. Bei is the Co-founder and CMO of StraightFire Studios, Co-founder of FIVE DEGREES, Lecturer of Creative Business, and Course creator Digital China.
I am so grateful that Bei shared her personal story about the disability of her son Elias and how this experience changed her and helped her to see the world through a different lens. It is such a beautiful story and it touched me deeply.
Our Chinese upbringing is very much focused on having ambition and achieving a lot of success. But what’s the definition of success? Elias brought Bei to reflect on her old beliefs and redefine her mission, her personal role in this world, and what she wants to contribute to this world as an Educator, Cultural Broker, Brand Interpreter, Metaverse Explorer and Creator of NFT 2.0 Ecosystem
Bei also shared her view about the importance of humanistic thinking and ethical thinking for digitalization, for our economic and technological development.
For entrepreneurs who are doing or want to do business with China, Bei also shared valuable tips and historical, and cultural contexts to help you navigate your business in China.
I hope this conversation between two Chinese friends will inspire you to reflect on the definition of success, achievement, contribution, and happiness, and how we can slow down to improve the well-being of our planet, our own well-being, and especially the well-being of young people!
