Hello and welcome to the Snowmass Extreme Podcast! My name is Jason Hartmann, but I am better known as Tigger. El Tiggre if you’re speaking Spanish. In 2002 I moved to the mountains and these are my stories about a little place called Snowmass.
This is a special episode of the Snowmass Extreme podcast focused on stories about Eric Smith, the inspirational leader behind the E. Smith Award.

Well folks, we made it! This is the last episode of Snowmass Extreme and I am thankful for the journey. It’s funny to think, all of these stories have been in my head for 20 years and now they’re just out there for anyone to hear. I hope you enjoyed listening!
But I still need to wrap some things up...
If you consider all of these stories so far as a whole, it seems like my first season in Snowmass was perfect, and in many ways it was. Even Eric Smith’s passing was a unifying moment that positively shaped my life. But life in the mountains, even life in a place like Snowmass, is like anywhere else: ya gotta get up to get down.
Honestly, this is another difficult story to share because each person in this episode has passed away and I still feel their absence. More importantly, they had a great effect on my life and I wish I could thank them.
With a title like Snowmass Extreme you may have thought my stories would revolve around snowboarding and not girlfriends or music, but you are missing the point. These stories are about life’s adventures and the power and freedom of discovering yourself. That is what music and snowboarding mean to me: freedom.
So when I moved to the mountains I brought a drumset…
It's embarrassing to say, but I had a checklist for success. A literal list of things to get or achieve. For example, the first item on the list was “jacket.” As in becoming a snowboard instructor and receiving a uniform jacket. It’s a funny way of looking at it, but I was proud to be a Snowmass snowboard instructor and I still am.
Where did the Tigger suit come from? Can someone really forget his own birthday?? This is the origin story of the Tigger suit and my nickname.
Ok, it was December, 2002, and I just got hired as a Snowmass Snowboard Instructor. Yeah!!! It was a whirlwind of meeting new people, learning to teach snowboarding, and finding a place to live.
I hope this podcast finds you happy, healthy, and living your dreams! That is exactly what I was doing in 2002: pursuing my dream of becoming a Snowmass snowboard instructor. After a phone interview I was invited to an on-snow interview in December, almost 20 years ago to the day. I packed up my grandma’s white Chrysler New Yorker with everything I thought I needed: clothes, snowboard gear, and my drum set. Don’t ask about the drum set, I’ll get to that in another episode.
I am not sure if it's the passing of time that prompted this podcast, but it is a labor of love. A passion project to tinker with. At minimum my Mom will listen to it! It's been 20 years since moving to Snowmass Village and some memories have faded, but others are so vivid they could have happened yesterday. Please take it all with a grain of salt and enjoy!
