Most of what we think we know about grief is wrong. The five stages. Closure. The push to let go and move on. Dr. Thomas Attig has spent nearly 50 years making the case for something better.

Dr. Attig is an applied philosopher, emeritus professor at Bowling Green State University, and past president of the Association for Death Education and Counseling. His 1996 book How We Grieve: Relearning the World became a landmark in modern grief studies. His new collection from Oxford University Press, Seeking Wisdom in Death’s Shadows, gathers 50 years of his work in 23 essays.
In this conversation, Eddie and Dr. Attig explore why the Kübler-Ross stages were built for dying, not grieving, and what actually happens when someone we love dies. They discuss grief as relearning how to live in a changed world, the ongoing love that continues after death, the self as a web of connections, and the crucial difference between reacting to loss and responding to it. Dr. Attig also draws a line between problems, which we can solve, and mysteries, which ask us to be transformed.

This episode is for anyone grieving, anyone walking alongside someone who is, and every clinician who wants a deeper framework than the one taught in graduate school.

What happens when two people who couldn’t stand each other end up building an award-winning winery—and an even stronger marriage?

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie sits down with Madison, the winemaker and co-owner of Ve Oh Lay Acres Winery in Summerland, British Columbia.

Madison shares the remarkable story of how she and her husband Laurent went from constantly arguing as coworkers to becoming business partners, vineyard owners, and an award-winning winemaking team. Along the way, they discuss what it really takes to build a healthy marriage while running a business together, how to navigate conflict without turning against each other, and why staying on the same team matters more than always being right.

The conversation also explores the craft of winemaking—from honey wine (mead) and grape wine to the rapidly growing world of non-alcoholic wines—as well as creativity, entrepreneurship, agritourism, and building a destination that is about far more than just wine.

If you’ve ever dreamed of starting a business with your spouse, wondered what makes a marriage last, or simply enjoy hearing the stories behind passionate entrepreneurs, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie Eccker explores how social media algorithms, AI, and digital culture are quietly reshaping the way people form beliefs, identity, and relationships.

Drawing from real clinical observations inside the counseling office, Eddie discusses why modern belief systems are forming faster than ever, why many people are beginning to sound psychologically and culturally similar, and how constant algorithmic reinforcement can slowly narrow perspective without people realizing it.

This episode explores:
• How social media and AI influence belief formation
• Why repetition starts feeling like truth
• The psychological shift from beliefs to identity
• Why disagreement now feels personal
• The impact on marriages, families, and generational relationships
• The dangers of using AI purely for emotional validation
• Why real relationships challenge us in ways algorithms never will
• How pursuing truth and tolerating challenge may be essential for emotional maturity

This is not an anti-technology episode. It is a discussion about awareness, influence, identity development, and the psychological cost of living in systems designed to reflect us back to ourselves.

If you’ve noticed growing division in families, increasing fragility in relationships, or the feeling that people are losing the ability to genuinely wrestle with ideas, this episode is for you.

Why do so many couples feel stuck financially… even when they’re making good money?

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie Eccker sits down with Tony Manganiello, a 3-time Inc. 500 executive and organizational development consultant, to break down a hidden system he calls the “payment matrix.”

According to Tony, most families are not failing financially because they lack discipline. They are following a system that was never designed to help them build wealth in the first place.

This conversation goes beyond budgeting and surface-level advice. It gets into the structure behind financial stress, how it quietly impacts marriages, and why so many couples end up fighting about money without fully understanding what is actually happening.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” but still not getting ahead, this episode will challenge how you think about money, debt, and long-term security.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

• Why making more money often does not solve financial stress
• How debt can quietly consume nearly half of your working income
• The “four buckets” where your lifetime income actually goes
• Why traditional budgeting strategies often fail over time
• How financial pressure amplifies conflict in marriage
• A different way to think about eliminating debt and building wealth
• The psychological patterns that keep people feeling stuck

Most people know they should have a will—but 70% still don’t.

Not because they don’t care.

Not because they don’t have access.

But because something deeper is getting in the way.

In this episode, Eddie sits down with Jermaine, founder of Heirlight, to unpack the real reason we avoid estate planning—and why it has far less to do with money or time than we think.

What started as a simple chatbot to better understand his mother’s life turned into something much bigger: a new way to approach legacy, family, and clarity. After unexpectedly losing his mom, Jermaine shares the deeply personal experiences that reshaped how he thinks about time, relationships, and what we leave behind.

This conversation goes far beyond legal documents. It explores:

  • Why avoidance, shame, and “having more time” keep us stuck
  • The emotional reality families face when nothing is planned
  • How clarity can actually be an act of love
  • The hidden value in memories, stories, and meaning—not just money
  • A new, conversation-driven approach to estate planning
  • What most people regret not saying before it’s too late

You’ll also hear powerful stories from revisiting a first meal in America at Burger King, to fulfilling childhood dreams in Austria, that highlight what really matters in the end.

If you’ve been putting this off, this episode isn’t here to scare you; it’s here to reframe it.

Because estate planning isn’t about death.

It’s about how you care for the people you love while you’re still here.

What happens when someone you loved dies… and you feel nothing?

In this deeply personal episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie shares the unexpected experience of delayed grief after the death of a close friend. After first hearing the news through a Facebook post, he felt almost no emotional response. But days later, at the celebration of life, something broke open.

What followed was a wave of grief, memories, guilt, and reflection.

In this episode, Eddie explores the complicated reality of grief that doesn’t arrive on schedule. Drawing on insights from C. S. Lewis, psychological research on self-forgiveness, and his own experience as a therapist and friend, he reflects on why grief can come in waves, why unresolved relationships make loss more complicated, and why guilt is often part of the grieving process.

This conversation also wrestles with deeper questions about time, regret, forgiveness, and the meaning that death gives to life itself.

If you’ve ever lost someone you loved, especially a relationship that ended with unfinished conversations, this episode offers a thoughtful and honest exploration of what complicated grief can feel like.

Topics in this episode include:

• Delayed grief and emotional numbness

• Losing a close friend

• Why grief often comes in waves

• The psychology of self-forgiveness

• Regret and unfinished relationships

• What death reveals about love and time

If you’re navigating grief or reflecting on someone you’ve lost, this episode may help you understand your own experience a little more clearly.

Why does your spouse listen to everyone else — friends, coworkers, even podcasts — but not you?

If you’ve ever felt unheard, dismissed, or misunderstood in your marriage, this episode breaks down what’s really happening beneath the surface.

In this conversation, Ed unpacks the neuroscience of communication in marriage — including how tone, stress, and something called emotional prosody shape how your words are interpreted before your spouse even consciously understands them. You’ll learn why miscommunication isn’t usually about stubbornness or disrespect, but about how two nervous systems process the same sound differently.

We cover:

  • Why your spouse may not actually be hearing what you think you’re saying
  • The difference between empathy and projection
  • How stress changes communication patterns in men and women
  • Why assuming you “already know” kills intimacy
  • Practical ways to repair communication in marriage

If you’re tired of repeating yourself and still feeling unheard, this episode will help you stop fighting the person — and start understanding the process.

This is for couples who want real growth, not surface-level advice.

Why do so many couples feel lonely while sharing the same life?

Why does intimacy feel fragile, exhausting, or unsafe even in committed relationships?

In Episode 3 of The Voyage Cast, Eddie concludes a three-part series by examining the most personal consequence of modern culture’s overstimulation and pseudo-enlightenment: the mask.

This episode explores how defensive identities form, how culture reinforces them under the banner of authenticity, and why they quietly erode intimacy, especially in marriage.

Drawing from psychology, anthropology, and philosophy, this episode examines:

  • What the “mask” actually is and why it forms
  • How false authenticity freezes emotional growth
  • Why overstimulation rewards defended identity without requiring maturity
  • How marriage exposes the mask in ways nothing else can
  • The three most common defensive identities that show up in relationships
  • Why intimacy requires formation, not performance or affirmation

This episode is not about blame or pathology.

It is about understanding how well-intended adaptations become obstacles to love.

This is the final episode in a three-part series:

  • Episode 1: The Supernormal Trap
  • Episode 2: The Pseudo-Enlightenment
  • Episode 3: The Mask and the Marriage

Together, these episodes explore how modern life weakens emotional adulthood, justifies it culturally, and personalizes it through identity.

Why does adulthood feel delayed, fragile, or avoided altogether in modern life?

Why do so many people struggle with commitment, emotional endurance, and long-term relationships?

In Episode 2 of The Voyage Cast, Eddie continues the series by examining the deeper cultural philosophy that made overstimulation, emotional fragility, and arrested development feel normal, even virtuous.

This episode introduces what Eddie calls the pseudo-enlightenment. A worldview that uses the language of freedom, authenticity, and self-expression while quietly removing the very structures that every culture once relied on to form emotionally mature adults.

Drawing from psychology, anthropology, and philosophy, this episode explores:

  • How traditional cultures intentionally formed adults through structure, constraint, and responsibility
  • Why modern culture reframes discomfort as harm and correction as oppression
  • How emotional arrested development becomes normalized as “authenticity.”
  • Why supernormal stimuli thrive in a culture that avoids formation
  • How this worldview undermines marriage, commitment, and long-term love
  • What it means to reclaim formation without nostalgia or moral panic

This is not a rejection of growth or progress.

It is a warning about what happens when formation is replaced by expression and adulthood is treated as optional.

This episode is Part Two of a three-part series.

Why does modern life feel overwhelming even when nothing is “wrong”?

Why do so many people feel restless, dissatisfied, emotionally fragile, and disconnected from themselves, their relationships, and the life they thought they wanted?

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie begins a three-part series by exploring a powerful but rarely discussed force shaping modern emotional life: supernormal stimuli.

Supernormal stimuli are artificially intensified experiences—hyper-palatable food, social media, pornography, constant entertainment, endless notifications—that overwhelm the nervous system and retrain the brain to prefer intensity over depth, novelty over meaning, and escape over engagement.

Drawing from psychology, anthropology, and philosophy, this episode explains:

  • Why our nervous systems feel overloaded and dysregulated
  • How modern overstimulation disrupts the rhythms humans were created for
  • Why boredom, patience, and emotional endurance are becoming rare
  • How overstimulation quietly undermines marriage and long-term intimacy
  • Why dissatisfaction has become the default emotional state
  • What it means to reclaim a truly human pace of life

This is not an argument against pleasure, technology, or progress.

It is a warning about what happens when artificial intensity replaces the slow, formative experiences that create emotionally mature adults.

If you feel overstimulated, restless, or unsure why normal life feels harder than it should, this episode will give you language, clarity, and a path forward.

This is Part One of a three-part series.

Next: The Pseudo-Enlightenment — How Modern Culture Dismantled the Structures That Create Adults.

What do you do when your marriage collapses so completely that it ends in a restraining order? Can a relationship that has broken ever be rebuilt?

In this powerful episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie sits down with relationship coach Bryan Power to unpack how his marriage went from “pretty good” to total emotional breakdown in 2024 — and how deep personal work, therapy, and Integrated Attachment Theory helped him rebuild not just his relationship, but himself.

Bryan shares openly about growing up in generational dysfunction, carrying abandonment wounds into adulthood, and how those subconscious patterns shaped his marriage until everything fell apart. He and Eddie walk through the six pillars of Integrated Attachment Theory — core wounds, needs, emotions, boundaries, communication, and behaviors — and explain how each one becomes a practical tool for repairing relationships from the inside out.

This episode is for anyone who has ever wondered:

• Why do my relationships repeat the same painful patterns?

• Can a marriage survive betrayal, separation, or emotional chaos?

• How do I communicate without defensiveness?

• What does real personal growth look like when everything is falling apart?

Bryan’s story is honest, hopeful, and deeply practical. Whether you’re trying to save your marriage, heal from trauma, or break generational patterns for your kids, this conversation offers a roadmap.

Topics include:

• Surviving marital breakdown and no-contact periods

• Healing abandonment wounds and subconscious patterns

• When one person’s growth can change a whole relationship

• Setting boundaries without creating distance

• How to communicate without defending

• What emotional regulation looks like in real time

• Why generational trauma follows us — and how to stop repeating it

• Practical tools couples can use today

Moving is one of the top five most stressful life events, right next to divorce, job loss & Death! And today’s guest, Julie, has lived through all three at the same time.

In this conversation, Julie, a longtime Content Marketing Strategist, now working for Bailey’s Moving & Storage, shares the brutally honest story of her 2018 move: newly divorced, raising kids alone, working a new job, avoiding the boxes she didn’t want to face, and breaking down in a U-Haul parking lot after running over a metal beam.

We explore the deeper layers behind moving that most people never talk about:

  • Why packing triggers anxiety, ADHD overwhelm, and decision fatigue
  • How grief, divorce, and major life transitions compound moving stress
  • Relocation depression and the emotional cost of change
  • What happens when life pushes you past your limit
  • How professional movers can reduce the emotional and physical load

Julie brings wisdom, humor, vulnerability, and real-life resilience to a topic most people only think about logistically... not emotionally. Her story offers hope for anyone navigating moving, upheaval, or the slow work of rebuilding a life when everything feels uncertain.

Bailey’s Moving & Storage serves Colorado, Utah, interstate, and international moves, and they understand the human side of transition better than anyone.

Listen in for a conversation about change, resilience, and why moving is never “just moving.”

You’ll learn:

• Why your brain makes assumptions (and how to slow them down)

• How misinterpretations damage connection in marriage and friendship

• Simple practices to replace judgment with curiosity and grace

Whether it’s a stranger at a gas station, a comment thread online, or your partner at home, the same truth applies: curiosity heals what assumptions divide.

Sometimes life doesn’t knock — it just walks in.

In this episode of The VoyageCast, Eddie shares a painfully funny and surprisingly spiritual story about being walked in on at a Starbucks bathroom… and how that moment of embarrassment opened up something deeper about vulnerability, control, and grace.

From the science of why embarrassment feels like physical pain, to the story of Adam and Eve’s first attempt at hiding, this episode explores why exposure might be the most honest path to growth.

Eddie reflects on:

  • Why life never asks permission before it changes you
  • How embarrassment reveals what we’re clinging to
  • What “spiritual nakedness” really means (and why it’s not about literal nakedness)
  • How grace refuses to wait until we’re ready
  • The simple laughter that welded a father and son closer together

With humor, honesty, and a little theological grit, this episode invites you to rethink the moments you’ve wanted to hide — and consider that maybe those moments weren’t about humiliation at all, but invitation.

If you’ve ever been exposed, interrupted, or undone by life, this one’s for you.

Listen now to learn why grace doesn’t knock, why embarrassment can be holy, and why being human is sometimes the most spiritual thing you can be.

Even the most intelligent minds can fall prey to their own blind spots. In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie explores a recent post by one of his former professors that accused a public memorial of using “covert influence tactics.”

What starts as a critique of manipulation opens up into a deeper conversation about bias, authority, and how easily psychology drifts into ideology when it loses touch with philosophy. Ed breaks down the difference between manipulation and meaning, examines the research behind NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), and explains why worship, ritual, and emotion are not inherently suspect.

Along the way, he asks a bigger question: What happens when disagreement itself gets pathologized? Why have we come to assume that if someone disagrees with us, something must be psychologically wrong with them?

This episode invites listeners to recover discernment without paranoia, to recognize when influence is healthy, when it’s toxic, and how to stay grounded in truth, love, and reason even when emotions run high.

In this episode:

  • Why intelligence doesn’t protect us from bias
  • How “influence” became a dirty word
  • What happens when therapy pathologizes disagreement
  • Why NLP isn’t the scientific brain-hack it claims to be
  • The difference between emotional manipulation and sacred meaning
  • How to hold your ground in a world that diagnoses dissent

Key takeaway:

“Influence isn’t the enemy. Losing our capacity to discern — that’s the real danger.”

If you’ve ever felt dismissed, misread, or accused of being “under influence” simply for disagreeing, this one’s for you.

Are you reacting to your spouse or to the ghosts of your past?

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Ed unpacks the negative patterns that quietly erode love: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling, untested emotions, and old wounds that still control the present. Drawing from John Gottman’s groundbreaking “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” psychology, neuroscience, and biblical wisdom, this conversation challenges you to face the ghosts that sabotage intimacy and gives you practical tools to build a marriage that lasts.

Through the lens of the iconic Good Will Hunting story, Ed shows how trauma, neurological wiring, and emotional reasoning shape our relationships—and how they can be rewired for trust, connection, and grace.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why unchecked patterns silently destroy marriages
  • How attachment wounds and trauma shape emotional reactions
  • Why emotions are real but not always reliable
  • Gottman’s Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—and their antidotes
  • Practical tools to pause, name, reframe, and respond instead of react
  • Why ownership, not excuses, is the key to transformation

Your past doesn’t get the final word. You can stop fighting ghosts—and start loving your spouse.

When RFK Jr. questioned Tylenol’s safety in pregnancy and autism risk, an old 2017 Tylenol tweet resurfaced, and the media firestorm began. MSNBC called it “reckless fearmongering,” Fox News compared Tylenol to “the next asbestos,” and HuffPost warned of “dangerous pseudoscience.” But what do these extreme reactions reveal about our culture?

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie unpacks the psychology of fear, why our brains react before they reason, and how philosophers like Kierkegaard and Aristotle remind us that knowledge without wisdom is useless. Beyond medicine, this story is about how we handle fear in our relationships, marriages, and families, and why wisdom, not outrage, is the only way forward.

In this gripping episode of Voyages Cast Top 3, Ed explores the growing psychological fractures shaping our world—from the global mental health crisis, to radicalization-fueled violence, to the slow collapse of digital discernment. These aren’t just headlines—they’re symptoms of something deeper: a culture losing its anchor in meaning.

We break down the UN’s latest mental health strategy, the tragic killings of Charlie Kirk and Iryna Zarutska, and the online radicalization of a teenage shooter. Along the way, we explore the roles of identity loss, emotional fragility, echo chambers, and the algorithms that profit from our pain.

This isn’t just about awareness—it’s a call to rebuild. To rethink where we find purpose, how we handle difference, and whether our online lives are helping us become more human—or more hollow.

Topics Covered:

  • The UN’s global shift toward existential mental health
  • The psychology behind recent acts of mass violence
  • How digital culture erodes our ability to think, feel, and connect
  • Tangible practices to restore meaning, maturity, and discernment

If this episode hits home—share it. Talk about it. We don’t heal in silence.

We live in a culture full of quick hacks, viral reels, and endless online advice about love and relationships. But let’s be honest—most of it doesn’t stick. It feels good in the moment but rarely transforms the way we actually live, love, and connect.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie Eccker, licensed marriage and family therapist, husband of 20 years, and guide for the messy middle of life, pushes past the noise. He challenges the modern experiments in love (hookup culture, ghosting, phubbing, even artificial intimacy with AI) that promise freedom but leave us more anxious and alone than ever.

Drawing on psychology, cultural data, and timeless wisdom, Ed calls us back to the virtues that actually sustain relationships: humility, patience, forgiveness, and fidelity. As C. S. Lewis once wrote in Mere Christianity, “Virtue—even attempted virtue—brings light; indulgence brings fog.” These ancient virtues are not flashy, but they bring clarity and healing where shortcuts only create confusion.

Listen in to learn:

  • Why hookup culture, ghosting, and AI intimacy undermine secure attachment.
  • The surprising paradox: why the “burdens” of trust, marriage, and family are actually paths to growth.
  • How practicing even one virtue this week can begin to transform your relationships.

If you’re tired of easy answers and ready to take responsibility for real love, this episode is for you.

Keywords for SEO: relationships, marriage advice, family therapy, humility, patience, forgiveness, fidelity, C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, attachment theory, hookup culture, ghosting, artificial intimacy, Christian marriage counseling, personal responsibility in relationships.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast Top Three, Eddie breaks down the stories shaping mental health care in America — where headlines, codes, and cash collide.

  • Why federal prosecutors dropped charges against AMA whistleblower Dr. Eithan Haim, and what his case reveals about silencing dissent.
  • How the hidden CPT Editorial Panel — stacked with insurance executives — decides which therapy and psychiatric treatments “count” for coverage.
  • What the AMA’s latest annual report shows about its true financial engine, and why that raises questions about who they really serve.

At the center of all three stories is one fragile thread: trust. Trust in science, in clinicians, and in the healthcare system itself. Without it, patients delay care, turn to social media for answers, and mental health outcomes suffer.

🎙️ The Voyage Cast Top Three — bringing you the headlines that shape your headspace, because mental health doesn’t stop at the therapy door.

What do the Founding Fathers have to do with your marriage? More than you might think.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie Eccker takes wisdom from Madison, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, and Hamilton—and shows how their words about duty, ambition, and friendship speak directly into modern relationships.

Marriage isn’t about two perfect people. It’s about two imperfect humans drafting their own constitution: a set of principles that keep love steady when emotions run high, resentment threatens, or ambition collides.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

✔️ Washington on why duty is the soil where joy grows

✔️ Adams & Jefferson on why lasting love is rooted in friendship

✔️ Franklin on discernment, grace, and repair

✔️ Hamilton on resentment as a cruel master if you avoid hard conversations

✔️ Madison on aligning ambitions instead of letting them clash

✔️ Practical tools backed by research: gratitude rituals, money dates, phone-free zones, and repair strategies

Nations rise on principles, not personalities—and so do marriages.

The Voyage Cast | Top 3 Mental Health News

For decades, we’ve been told that psychology and self-improvement alone are enough. But what if resilience — real healing, real flourishing — requires something more?

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Ed breaks down the top three stories in mental health and why they matter for your life:

🧠 The Neuroscience of Spirituality

Research from Lisa Miller (Columbia University) and Andrew Newberg (Thomas Jefferson University) shows that practices like prayer, meditation, awe, and worship don’t just make us feel better — they literally rewire the brain, protect against depression, and foster recovery from trauma.

📱 Gen Z’s Surprising Shift

Often called the most anxious, screen-addicted generation, some young people are quietly pushing back. Studies from Barna and Springtide reveal that many are logging off social media and rediscovering faith, family, journaling, nature, and community. And with it? Greater happiness, stability, and belonging.

🔺 Maslow’s Missing Piece

Most of us learned Maslow’s hierarchy of needs ends with self-actualization. But late in life, Maslow changed his mind. His final insight — confirmed by later scholarship — was that the true pinnacle is transcendence. Without it, self-actualization collapses into self-absorption. With it, suffering becomes meaningful, and joy becomes stable.

Key Theme: Resilience doesn’t come from turning further inward. It comes when we lift our eyes beyond ourselves.

Why Listen?

Whether you’re a therapist, parent, leader, or someone wrestling with your own mental health journey, these stories reveal how science, culture, and psychology all point to the same truth: we are wired for transcendence.

🎧 Tune in for clarity, encouragement, and challenge — and leave with new insight into how healing really happens.

Do your emotions ever feel like the ultimate truth? In this episode of The Voyage Cast, host Eddie Eccker, LMFT, unpacks why our feelings are powerful signals, but terrible dictators. Drawing on years of clinical experience, Ed explores how emotional reasoning shapes marriages, friendships, and even our culture online.

You’ll hear:

  • Why emotions matter—but don’t always equal reality.
  • How couples get stuck in the “pursue/withdraw” cycle and how to break free.
  • The hidden attachment cries underneath anger, silence, and defensiveness.
  • How influencers, celebrities, and the halo effect sway our emotions and distort truth.
  • Practical steps to test feelings, name needs, and aspire to truth together.

This episode blends humor, real therapy room stories, and grounded wisdom to help you navigate love, conflict, and culture with more clarity and connection.

👉 Perfect for anyone looking to strengthen their marriage, relationships, or emotional health in a world where feelings often shout louder than facts.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast Top Three, Eddie Eccker unpacks three powerful stories shaping the future of mental health:

  1. Meta’s AI scandal — How Facebook’s chatbots crossed the line into dangerous intimacy with children and vulnerable adults, and why loneliness makes simulated connection so risky.
  2. AI and grief — The surreal case of Patricia Oliver speaking with an AI recreation of her son, Parkland victim Joaquín “Guac” Oliver, and even CNN’s Jim Acosta interviewing the AI on air. What does this mean for grief, healing, and unresolved mourning?
  3. Psychedelic hope — A psilocybin-based treatment shows rapid relief for postpartum depression, offering not just clinical breakthrough but cultural reflection on the hidden struggles of new mothers.

Eddie explores each story through a therapeutic lens—connection, rumination, shame, and healing—inviting listeners to reflect on what it really means to be human in a world where technology and medicine increasingly mediate our deepest needs.

Why do so many couples stay stuck in the same painful patterns—even when they say they want change? In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Ed unpacks the hidden force called secondary gain: the subtle rewards we get from staying in dysfunction.

From avoiding conflict by scrolling on your phone, to blaming your partner so you never have to look in the mirror, to clinging to comfort, finances, or social image—the payoffs of pain are real. And they’re often what keep marriages circling the same arguments for years.

Drawing on real therapy work, cultural examples like Succession’s Shiv and Tom, and insights from the docuseries Couples Therapy, Ed shows why repair stalls until these “hidden benefits” are named. Because you can’t heal what you’re still profiting from.

Whether you’re married, dating, or reflecting on past relationships, this conversation will challenge you to see the subtle ways you might be protecting pain instead of pursuing intimacy.

  • Colorado sex offender Solomon Galligan walks free after an attempted child abduction — thanks to mental health law loopholes. Is it time to bring back secure psychiatric hospitals?

Forgiveness is often misunderstood—and for many, it can feel impossible. In Part 2 of Resentment & Release, we explore why letting go can feel like losing control, why grief and anger are valid parts of healing, and why forgiveness is never about excusing harm or staying in unsafe situations.

This episode features the extraordinary real-life story of Mary Johnson, a Minneapolis mother whose only son was murdered. After twelve years of carrying grief and anger, Mary made the remarkable decision to meet—and eventually forgive—her son’s killer. Their journey from tragedy to reconciliation shows that while forgiveness is not quick or easy, it can lead to unexpected healing and connection.

Through Mary’s story and practical insight, we’ll unpack:

  • Why resentment can feel like power, but actually keeps us trapped
  • The difference between reconciliation and personal release
  • How grief and anger both have a place in the healing process
  • Why forgiveness is not a requirement for healing—and may never be the right path for some
  • How to set healthy boundaries while processing past pain
  • A guided reflection to help you explore what you’re still carrying

This conversation is for anyone holding on to hurt, whether from a small slight or a life-altering betrayal. You’ll find compassion, realism, and tools to help you heal—at your own pace and in your own way.

Part 1 of 3: The Prison We Build — Understanding Resentment

What if the thing keeping you stuck isn’t what they did, but what you’re still carrying?

In this powerful first episode of The Voyage Cast, host Eddie Eccker unpacks the quiet captivity of resentment, how it forms, why it lingers, and what it’s secretly costing you. This isn’t just about anger. It’s about identity, pain loops, and the emotional armor we wear when forgiveness feels impossible.

You’ll discover:

  • Why resentment is more than leftover anger—it’s a recycled narrative
  • The physiological toll of reliving betrayal (backed by brain science)
  • The hidden emotional payoffs that keep us stuck in bitterness
  • How family dynamics and cultural myths shape our resistance to forgiveness
  • When the pursuit of justice becomes a trap
  • A short, guided reflection to help you name what you’re still carrying

Whether you’re working through a relationship wound, a long-held grudge, or the ache of something unresolved, this episode offers an honest, empathetic starting point.

Resentment & Release is a 3-part series helping you move from emotional rehearsals to real healing.

Why do so many women struggle with feeling “not enough”? In this episode, Ed explores the often unseen but powerful influence of the father-daughter relationship—how a father’s presence, absence, or emotional availability can shape a daughter’s self-worth, attachment style, and even her view of God.

We unpack the psychology of the father wound, what the research says about a father’s influence on daughters, and how this early relational imprint can lead to perfectionism, people-pleasing, or emotional shutdown. Whether you’re a dad, a daughter, or walking with someone who carries this wound, this episode offers language, clarity, and a path toward healing and repair.

If you’ve ever walked away from an argument feeling victorious but emotionally distant, this one’s for you. You’ll learn:

  • How memory is shaped more by emotion than fact
  • Four actionable steps to create new emotional “peaks,” repair ruptures, and end well—whether it’s a conversation or a connection

If you’ve ever wondered why you keep replaying one argument, clinging to a perfect beginning, or struggling to move forward after a breakup, this episode is for you.

  • Why emotional erosion is more dangerous than big fights
  • The cultural lie of hyper-independence and how it damages connection

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Eddie explores the invisible stories shaping how we experience marriage, politics, and everyday life.

Most of us don’t realize we’re swimming in narratives we’ve built—narratives that can trap us in blame, outrage, and certainty without ever questioning if they’re true.

Through relatable examples from political debates and common marriage conflicts, Eddie challenges us to pause, rethink the stories we defend, and start asking better questions.

Because growth doesn’t come from having all the answers—it comes from learning to see the water we’re swimming in.

If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or exhausted by the same old patterns, this conversation offers a different way forward: one rooted in clarity, responsibility, and real connection.

Knowing how you feel is one thing. Knowing what to do with those feelings? That’s emotional intelligence—and it can make or break your relationship.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Eddie Eccker explores why emotional intelligence (EQ) is essential for relational health—and why so many of us were never taught how to use it.

You’ll discover:

  • How low EQ shows up in marriage as blame, defensiveness, and emotional shutdown
  • How to build emotional awareness without shame or self-criticism
  • Why empathy, regulation, and honest expression are critical to connection
  • Simple tools to shift from emotional chaos to relational clarity

Think of this as the emotional skills class you should’ve had in school—but for grown-up relationships.

Not all lies are loud.

In marriage, it’s often the quiet, everyday phrases—“I’m fine,” “It doesn’t bother me,” “I’m over it”—that do the most long-term damage.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Eddie Eccker explores how small, self-protective lies quietly erode emotional intimacy and relational trust. These aren’t betrayals you read about in books—they’re the slow drips that wear down even strong connections.

With candid insight and a powerful satirical segment inspired by C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, Eddie breaks down:

  • The hidden cost of emotional dishonesty in marriage
  • How hyper-individualism and unforgiveness distort intimacy
  • Why the illusion of “endless options” sabotages commitment
  • How to build truth-based relationships that actually last

This episode blends humor, theology, and practical advice, offering a call to action for couples who want more than survival in marriage—they want restoration.

Because real love doesn’t lie—it leans in.

What happens when we try to control everything—including how we love, protect, or isolate ourselves? In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Eddie Eccker reflects on the subtle but costly drift toward self-worship—what happens when we place ourselves at the center of every decision, emotion, and relationship. Through honest insight and a grounded conversation, he explores how the pursuit of autonomy and emotional self-sufficiency can quietly destroy intimacy, limit growth, and leave us lonelier than ever. If you’ve ever been praised for being “strong” while quietly falling apart, this episode is for you.

Blame feels good—for a moment. But over time, it chips away at trust, prevents growth, and creates emotional distance in even the closest relationships.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Eddie Eccker breaks down the hidden cost of blame and how it becomes a defensive reflex that shields us from vulnerability but isolates us from connection.

We explore:

  • Why blame is so emotionally seductive
  • How it shows up in marriages, parenting, and communication
  • What blame is actually protecting (spoiler: it’s not your relationship)
  • How to move from accusation to ownership—and from disconnection to repair

If you’re tired of the same arguments, miscommunication, or emotional shutdowns in your relationships, this episode offers a roadmap out of blame and back toward healing.

Because real connection starts where finger-pointing stops.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, co-creator and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Matt Johnson unpacks the concept of “love tests”—those subtle, often subconscious ways we test the people closest to us. Whether it’s expecting a partner to “just know” what we need or withholding connection to see if they’ll chase us, these patterns often lead to misunderstanding and emotional distance. Through thoughtful insight and practical examples, Matt explores how love tests develop, how to recognize them, and how to replace them with vulnerability, clear communication, and real connection. This episode is a guide to building trust without guesswork—and loving without conditions.

In this episode of The Voyage Cast, we interview our Host Matt. His story shows us that nobody has it all together no matter what they look like. It's our trials, losses & pains that clarify who we are and move us closer to who we could be.
But, before we have the breakthroughs, we have to have the breakdowns. We need to honor our problems as well as our needs so that we can honor the ones we love, and live the life we want.
