Looking for a vibrant, family-friendly event in the Houston area this spring? In this episode of Spotlight Houston, host Blanca Quezada interviews Stacy Borgfeldt, co-founder of the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation, about the highly anticipated 2025 Sugar Land Arts and Music Fest.
Taking place April 26–27, 2025, at the Smart Financial Centre Plaza, the Sugar Land Arts and Music Fest brings together the best of visual arts, live music, local food, and cultural activities for all ages. This annual event is one of Fort Bend County’s most exciting spring festivals and showcases local talent and community spirit.
Art lovers can explore over 100 juried fine art booths featuring 14 mediums including oil paintings, watercolors, pottery, woodwork, and photography. Festival-goers can also enjoy live artist demonstrations and muralists painting large-scale works themed around the love of music.
Live music plays all weekend on three stages. Headliners include Too Much to Say, a Dave Matthews Band tribute group, jazz musician Vel Lewis, and Yacht Rock USA performing crowd favorites from the ’70s to ’90s. The festival also features mariachi bands, student choirs, and theatrical performances from local schools.
Local restaurants Escalante’s, Baker Street Pub, and Aling’s Chinese Bistro will offer curated menus exclusively for the event. Guests can enjoy the wine garden, beer garden, or upgrade to the VIP experience, which includes catered meals and front-row views of the main stage.
Families will love the children’s activity zone, featuring an art tent, chalk art mural walls, face painting, and science demos from the City of Sugar Land. Kids under 12 get in free, and parking is free and onsite.

What happens when someone finally says, “I need help”? In this episode of Spotlight Houston, host Blanca Quezada talks with Celinda Guerra from the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) about how they help people heal from domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking.
HAWC provides free, private help for women, children, and men who are facing abuse. Celinda shares how their team offers emotional support, safe housing, legal aid, and more—so survivors can feel safe and move forward.
HAWC offers 24/7 hotlines for domestic violence and sexual assault. Survivors can talk to trained advocates in English, Spanish, and 140 other languages using interpreters. For those who can’t speak safely, a live chat option is available on their website. Support begins the moment someone reaches out.
Once connected, survivors have access to counseling, either one-on-one or in groups, to begin healing from trauma. Legal advocates help with protective orders and explain survivors’ rights. Hospital advocates provide support during exams after an assault and even bring clean clothes when needed. HAWC also helps survivors create safety plans tailored to their unique situation.
The organization’s economic empowerment program teaches job skills, helps with financial literacy, and connects survivors to resources so they can rebuild independent lives. HAWC supports the whole family—offering child care, parenting classes, and even an on-site HISD school so children stay safe and learning.
HAWC recently opened One Safe Place, a beautiful new housing center with three times more room—offering 360 beds and on-site services to help survivors heal, grow, and thrive.

Love Cancer Care, which now serves over 100,000 children and families each year across 10 hospitals in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Temple, Texas.

As one of the largest cities in the country, homelessness continues to be a big problem in Houston, and it's not just adults who are affected. Many young people are also suffering, feeling lost, hungry, and scared. They need a place where they can feel safe and cared for.
Covenant House is a non-profit organization that opened over 40 years ago to provide a safe shelter for young men and women aged 18-24. Since then, it has grown into much more. Felicia Broussard, Chief of Development for Covenant House, joins our host, Blanca Quezada, to discuss how the organization is meeting the needs of homeless youth.
Felicia shares how these young people often become homeless due to abuse, abandonment, aging out of foster care, or being at risk of human trafficking. Covenant House is committed to providing a safe place and meals and helping these young adults finish school, go to college, find jobs, and learn life skills. They offer a wide range of programs and services, including on-site medical care, financial literacy, employment assistance, life skills workshops, mental health care, and much more.

Do you know the difference between your brain and your mind? The MindWorks exhibit, built by the Ontario Science Centre, is a hands-on, thought-provoking exhibit that explores this difference. This interactive exhibit helps us learn what makes us who we are, why we think, feel, and act, and where our inner voice comes from.
In this episode, our host Blanca Quezada sits down with Becky Seabrook, Director of Guest Engagement at The Health Museum. Becky discusses what makes this exhibition interesting, how it encourages self-reflection, and shows our minds' remarkable power. She also explains how the exhibit will make us question what our mind is, how it works, and how it helps us think and feel.
Becky also talks about how the exhibition starts thought-provoking conversations about making choices, understanding perception, and the nature of consciousness. Is the mind separate from our brain, or does the brain control the mind?
The exhibit is for visitors of all ages, with hands-on activities for kids, too.

The BIPOC Arts Network and Fund (BANF) supports Houston Cultural Treasures to help under-recognized and under-resourced organizations.
In a recent ceremony, BANF named 11 groups 'Houston Cultural Treasures' and gave them over $5 million in funding for 2024-2025. Silambam Houston was one of them!
These groups, including Silambam Houston, are not just recipients of support, but leaders in cultural production and community advocacy. BANF's backing is not just financial but also a catalyst for a more inclusive and diverse arts scene in Houston, a testament to the power of community support.
BANF started in 2022 by investing $2 million in BIPOC-led groups needing urgent support during the pandemic. In 2023, they funded 25 artists with $20,000 each. Another round will open in 2024.

Summer is upon us, and all we think about is going out to enjoy the sun either by a pool, the beach, gardening, playing outdoors with the kids, other activities, or just sitting out to a nice tan. But many of us overlook the fact that the sun’s rays can damage our skins in many ways, but the scariest is skin cancer which sometimes can be deadly depending on lots of factors, for example the type it is.
Sitting to discuss with Blanca Quezada, host, regarding skin cancer prevention are two Houston’s best dermatologists from Bellaire Dermatology Clinic, Dr. Kayla McNiece, FACMS and Dr. Lauren Pontius Floyd.
Dr. McNiece is a specialist in skin cancer, facial reconstruction, and complex dermatology. Dr. Floyd specializes in medical dermatology, skin cancer, and dermatologic procedures.
Both doctors discuss the importance of sunscreen for skin protection, what are the most common skin cancers, treatment options, what Mohs surgery is, what the risk factors are for skin cancer, who is at risk, and self-examination. They also describe what melanomas look like and how it can also occur in nails. Both doctors give recommendations on the best sunscreens to buy and how to use them.

This week, host Blanca Quezada is joined by Dr. Jesse Esparza associate professor and interim chair of the department of history at Texas Southern University. His area of expertise is on the history of Latinos in the United States. He is also an award-winning author.
Dr. Esparza discusses the complexity of Latino people in Houston and the United States, how their traditions and cultures have made a difference in the patchwork of peoples that live in Houston and the county. Beginning with the misconception that if we speak Spanish or have a certain look, we are all Mexican.
Dr. Esparza also discusses the upcoming Bayou City History Harvest Day Event, which is devoted to recording and preserving the records of the community, including the Houston Police Department. Dr. Esparza is inviting people to bring their stories, photographs, newspaper clippings, and personal artifacts. Everything will be scanned, recorded, or photographed and returned to the owners. There will also be a film screening.

February is American Heat Month, and I for one just take my heart for granted. I don’t think about until I hear about people that have lost family members or friends to heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. I also found out it can happen at any age. It’s not just an elderly person’s health issue.
For today’s show, I’ve asked Chole Burke, advocate for the American Heart Association (AHA), and Miss North Texas 2023 to share with us her personal story regarding her heart issues and how her condition has impacted her life.
Chole also shared how she became a volunteer with AHA and how it prepared her to share her story in the hopes that we can all go get checked and perhaps save our lives.
The AHA’s is also celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary, and Chole relates the history of the association. Why and who created the organization. How it’s been helping people throughout the country. She talked how AHA provides CPR classes that will help someone’s life.
She provided heart problem symptoms and advice on how we can take care of our hearts.

What do you know about breast cancer? Did you know that through prevention, death rates can be reduced? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! If you have ignored or put off getting checked, now’s the time to do it! Dorothy Gibbons, CEO and Co-Founder of The Rose Center for Breast Health Excellence, takes the opportunity to discuss with Blanca Quezada why and how women need to be more proactive regarding their breast health.
Dorothy talks about the history of The Rose and why it was established. This is the first nonprofit breast cancer organization based on the insured covering the costs of the uninsured.
The Rose has been in operation since 1986; it has served almost 800,000 patients. It’s also the leading nonprofit breast health care organization in southeast Texas. It works with board-certified radiologists, specialized technical staff, five mammography coaches, and a diagnostic imaging center that gives access to treatment to more than 40,000 women annually.
Dorothy explains how The Rose tries to reduce the number of deaths by providing access to screening, diagnostics, and treatment services to any woman regardless of her ability to pay. She discusses different types of breast cancers that can be diagnosed, but most of all, she keeps reminding us to get the all-important annual mammogram. She also mentions how The Rose tries to ensure every woman has access to breast cancer screening, diagnosis and care, ultrasounds and biopsies, and treatment.

Alley Theatre’s Hubbard stage presents the production of “American Mariachi” in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, along with the support of its community initiative, “El Zocalo.” Today, Blanca Quezada meets with Baldemar Rodriguez, Alley Theatre’s manager of community partnerships, to discuss the upcoming production and “El Zocalo’s” commitment to celebrate, grow, and interact with Houston’s diverse Latin culture and artistic community.
Baldemar talks about how and why the Alley Theatre created its community initiative, “El Zocalo,” and its work with the Latin community for the past few years. He also discusses the production of “American Mariachi,” as well as behind-the-stage endeavors that helped create the production by Jose Cruz Gonzalez and director KJ Sanchez.
“American Mariachi” tells the story of family, love, and tradition, about the freedom to dream big. It’s the 1970’s and girls can’t be mariachis. At that time, a young girl decides that she and her cousin are going to create an all-girls mariachi and go against disapproving relatives, but she brings Mom along for the ride. This play also incorporates the amazing live mariachi music that will remind us how impossible dreams can come true.
Baldemar stated that we can visit the Alley’s website, “American Mariachi,” for post-show chats, information on workshops, how to get more information on the show before attending, and learning more about the Alley.
Baldemar additionally mentioned that the Alley Theatre’s El Zócalo is also launching Yo Soy Houston Mariachi as part of Alley Theatre’s 77th season production of American Mariachi. They look forward to presenting scheduled performances and featuring them in a lobby display during the “American Mariachi” run from September 22 through October 22, 2023.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Glassell School of Art opens an art exhibit from the lower southwest state of Oaxaca in Mexico. The exhibition Magical and Mystical Oaxaca: Celebrating Oaxacan Art and Culture showcases vibrantly colored diverse works of art in three installations.
Valentina Atkinson, director of the Serrano Gallery and Serrano Oaxaca Gallery, shares with host Blanca Quezada her partnership with the Glassell School of Art and the exhibition, which, for her, was a unique opportunity to help foster cultural exchange and to engage with Oaxacan art and artist. She describes the state of Oaxaca as a state that still maintains many pre-Hispanic traditions and a magical culture.
She discusses the powerful works by four Oaxacan contemporary artists featured in the exhibit and how their art focuses on the worlds of the real, the imaginary, tradition, and modernity found in their state.
Women artists are also featured in the exhibition. This exhibit highlights the Oaxacan women printmakers' unique perspectives and artistic expressions. The exhibit shows their printmaking techniques, including woodcut, etching, and lithography.
Valentina also mentions the Glassell's students' journey to Oaxaca to experience and explore the culture and art and how they created visual documentation of what they discovered, which are also part of the exhibition.

When we hear the word dementia, sometimes the first thing we think of is Alzheimer’s. Today, we’ll discover what dementia means and learn more about what we need to know about Alzheimer’s. Jorge Olvera, director of outreach with the Alzheimer’s Association, Houston and Southeast Texas, joins host Blanca Quezada to clarify the differences between mental health diseases often called dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Jorge discusses warning signs to look for to identify what’s happening to your loved one or yourself. He also mentions that these diseases don’t just affect the elderly but also younger adults as well.
Jorge focuses on what Alzheimer’s is, how to identify the symptoms, how the disease is diagnosed, available resources, how to access them, and how to lower our risk. He talks about research treatments, how to get involved, and what treatments are available.

As a society, we tend to view aging people as “old people” that should sit at home and basically become invisible. What a mistake this is because they still have a lot to contribute. All they need is someone to recognize that they still exist. Fritz McDonald, president and founder of the Great Age Movement, has done just that. Understanding the Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi at The New Eternal Gandhi Museum
Houston is set to open a new museum, Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston, to honor the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, a civil rights leader, as well as highlight other worldwide leaders who embraced peaceful means to make social changes. Even though the museum has yet to open, many leaders around the world have already recognized the impact it will have. The museum is expected to open in August 2023.
Atul Kothari, co-founder, and museum trustee, talks to Blanca about why creating the first-of-its-kind museum in the country dedicated to promoting and preserving Gandhi’s legacy of nonviolent conflict resolution was important. He also mentions how this museum is a world-class institution that is meant to be a cultural and educational place that cultivates the universal values of Truth, Nonviolence, Peace, Love, and Service. Kothari describes how other worldwide peace leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Dalai Lama, are also highlighted.

Mister McKinney’s goal is to tell Houston’s story so that we can see and learn about what happened in the past and who were the people that helped to create the city that we now live in. Mister McKinney is also known for his open-air yellow school bus, known as Houston’s History Bus that he uses to provide tours to different historic locations around Houston.

The 4th of July will be here before you know it so get ready to hear all the fun things to do with your friends or family at this year’s City of Houston’s official 4th of July event – Shell Freedom Over Houston.” Susan Christian, director at the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, joins Blanca to give everyone all the details of what’s been planned for the event happening at Eleanor Tinsley and Sam Houston Parks on Buffalo Bayou – along Allen Parkway.
Susan talks about the five stages that will be set up with musical entertainment. Headlining the Shell Main stage will be chart-topping country star, Chris Young. Other stages will feature American Music Award winner Yola and Soul/R&B/Funk band TMF with their new lead singer, native Houstonian Chris Walker.

In honor of Father’s Day, award-winning author Alicia Araujo-Elatassi discusses her bilingual easy-to-read book Querido Papa (Dear Dad). This is a book written to assist dads in creating a strong, loving connection with their daughters as they grow into adulthood.
Alicia shares her experiences and struggles with her dad, and what it took to achieve the exceptional loving relationship she now shares with him. She talks about why she decided to recount her upbringing and her experiences with her dad. She explains how dads can better understand the struggles their daughters may be going through and how they can help them navigate through their lives. Alicia knows it may not always be easy to connect, but through her experience, she knows it can happen. Teach For America is on a mission to end educational inequity by finding, developing, and supporting a diverse network of leaders. They believe in the power of education and are dedicated to creating a nation where every student has access to a quality education.
Teach for America was founded with a revolutionary idea: young people committing to teaching for a couple of years in rural and urban communities where they are needed most could transform their own lives while putting kids on a stronger academic path. And boy, did it prove true! Four out of five people who join Teach for America stay in the work, with 70% continuing in the K-12 education system and 10% working in other roles supporting education.
Teach for America works closely with school district partners to identify areas where teachers are most needed and places qualified candidates in those classrooms. It's a transformative process, and in this engaging interview, Blanca and Tiffany dive deep into the journey of placing teachers in classrooms and how Teach for America supports them every step of the way.
Tiffany shares her own incredible story, coming from a small town in South Texas and initially pursuing a degree in finance. However, her passion for giving back and helping kids like herself led her to Teach for America, where she became a successful teacher and eventually joined the Teach for America staff. Through the resources provided by Teach for America, Tiffany's dream of making a difference in education became a reality.

Learning About Mental Health with Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD
Mental health is an issue that sometimes is not discussed among families or friends for different reasons. It could be because of stigma, but it is a health issue that needs to be brought up so that care can be provided. No one should have to suffer alone. Help is available.
In this week's episode, our show host Blanca Quezada discusses the importance of mental health with Tricia Novotny, a licensed professional counselor and practice manager at the Northeast Youth and Family Wellness Center for the Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD.
Tricia shares the importance of overcoming stigma and seeking help when needed. She offers guidance for breaking down the barriers that prevent us from seeking treatment. She talks about coping with anxiety and depression and understanding and supporting children's mental health challenges. And she addresses how to navigate the mental health system so that we can access services and know what to expect.
The Harris Center provides high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective services so that persons with behavioral health needs may live with dignity as fully functioning, participating, and contributing community members. Each year, they serve tens of thousands of Harris County's most vulnerable populations, with more than a million services in every corner of the County. Their strong community partnerships and support allow them to provide care and contribute to making Harris County a resilient community with a strong safety net. They do not deny services based on a patient's inability to pay for any reason, including race, color, sex, national origin, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Lupe says, this festival promises lots of fun for everyone of all ages, including children. The festival will be offering a wide variety of Mexican and Chicano Art, Music, Food and Culture! He also mentions the history of Cinco de Mayo and what it means to Houston’s Mexican community, additionally, he discusses the history and historic sites found in Houston’s East End community.
Go hungry and get ready to party because the East End Street Fest will include more than thirty food and art vendors and multiple music and cultural dance performances on several music stages and plazas that will be located on Navigation Boulevard’s esplanade. If people prefer a sit-down meal, there are plenty of well-known restaurants located around the festival area.
The fest will feature mariachi prodigy Eduardo Trevino and other musicians and folk-dance performers such as the trio Dime Que Si, Danzas Folkloricas de Solei, Houston Aztec Dance – Calmec, Danza Azteca Taxcayolotl, Chicano Boulevard DJ, mariachi singer Cessar Mandujano, Las Americas Ballet Folklorico, Ambassadors International Ballet Folklorico and headliner Sandy G and Los Gavilanes, among many others. Car lovers will enjoy the lowrider car collection at the Show & Shine area, and kids will bounce around at the Plaza de los Niños.

Learn about the mysteries found in the many diverse exhibit halls from around the world that are in the five floors of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, as Blanca Quezada sits down with Kathleen Havens, director of the museum’s curriculum and content to talk about the incredible discoveries that await the public.
Presently, the museum has a remarkable exhibit that replicates the experience that British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen had when they discovered King Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, “King Tut’s Discovery Experience.” Kathleen discusses how the exhibit was created, the artifacts that can be seen, and how the museum wanted to make sure the public could feel exactly what it would have been like to be the first people to see King Tut’s tomb.
Kathleen also shares information on the renovation of the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the colorful and delicate butterflies, and other insects that call it home; the Burke Baker Planetarium, where we can learn about the vast space beyond our planet; the anthropology hall where we can see amazing dinosaurs, and wonder or imagine what the world must have been like when they existed; then be amazed with artifacts on display that belonged to diverse Native American civilizations; the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre; and so much more.

Get ready to get all the scoop on this year’s anticipated colorful and fun 36th Annual Art Car Parade as Blanca Quezada sits down with Jonathon Beitler, director of communications and special events for Orange Show Center for Visionary Arts, presenting the art car show events and parade.
More art cars are added to the line-up each year, and this year is no exception. There will be more than 250 creatively inspired art cars that will also include many new out-of-this-world creative designs.
This world’s largest and oldest art exhibit on wheels will kick off this week with its Main Street Drag event. Several mini parades with about 100 art cars go to different communities, schools, nursing homes, and more to bring smiles to people who cannot make it to the parade.
For those that can’t wait until parade day, find out how you can have a special sneak peek under the stars. See about 100 cars lit up and meet the artist at the Art Car Sneak Peek at Discovery Green downtown. Enjoy live music, activities, and much more all around the park.
The grand parade happens at Allen Center on Saturday, April 15th starting with the 250 plus car Line-Up Party, H-E-B Kids Creative Zone, and then the grand car parade rolls out with lots of sparkly, vibrantly colorful, and unique works of art on wheels.

A well-known nonprofit in Houston, MECA provides arts education in schools, after-school programs, and summer schools.
