The Artists’ Blend: Recent Episodes

Austin Jeffrey Smith and Easton J. Curtis

Hi friends! We’re just two artists pouring over different aspects of artistry and industry (like musical theatre, film scores, monetizing your artistry, and other cool artsy things) through the eyes of two analytical thinkers with degrees in theatre and music. We want to encourage ourselves and others to expand their artistry, explore creativity, and engage industry. Oh, and every episode, we sample a different brew of coffee as we talk, and give you our unfiltered opinion on it. Get it? Unfiltered? Lol. Anyways, we’ve got episodes coming out every Tuesday. So grab your mug, and let’s get talkin!

Arts and entertainment take many forms all over the world. American culture tends to categorize certain types of performance as “just entertainment,” but not “art.” What is the reasoning for these categories, and why are some forms of entertainment viewed as lesser than? We’re asking today: where is the line between art and entertainment? And to clarify, though we often utilize the royal “we” in this discussion, we by no means are stating our personal opinions on classifying certain things as “non-art,” or lesser than. While in this episode we discuss the general stereotypes of the populous that perhaps cruise line performances, Vegas shows, or theme park entertainment is “low art” or of low artistic value, we do not adhere to these generalized perceptions. We highly value all forms of artistry and entertainment, and encourage you to as well!

This episode, we played a little game as we talk through how we select our audition material! We each assigned the other person three characters/shows to audition for, and we decided what we would bring in for the “audition.” It’s a fun little episode with lots of laughs, interesting ideas, and hot takes.

We’ve got another cup of coffee today from Foxtail Coffee Co. This time, we tried a cup of their Mexico blend, one of their best-selling coffees. Try it here!

Christopher and Sarah Bailey are a pair of new media creators, songwriters, and producers. They’re experts in creation and self-production, so we picked their brains on the trials, tribulations, and celebrations that come with producing your own art. Sarah has multiple EPs available to stream, Christopher has written a beautiful musical called The Pier, and together they created and produced a musical mini-series called Incognita’s Infamous Adventures, which is currently available on Amazon Prime. The Baileys are also the masterminds of Well Wishes Productions, a Nashville-based boutique production company specializing in Multimedia Production, Live Event Contracting, Studio & Live Vocals. Well Wishes Voices have recently performed with global artists at venues throughout the country, across all digital platforms, and on the high seas.

It was 9pm when we recorded this….so this time we’re all drinking different kinds of teas!!

A listener suggested we do a Wizard of Oz deep dive, so we gladly obliged! Exploring the conditions of film artistry back in the late 1930s is quite an interesting journey that shows us how much the industry has grown in fair treatment and working conditions, as well as areas in which we still lack. We discuss the history of the Jitterbug, special effects mechanisms, conditions on-set, hospitalizations, and abuse from authority figures and supervisors. TW: gore and abuse

Today’s beans are from Black Press Coffee Shop based in Tennessee! We tried one of their Guji, Ethiopia single-origin coffees (and it was delicious). Order their coffee here!

Okay, we know this sounds like clickbait, but truly, we have some really good stories to tell that offer a peek into the world of singing backup for major international artists. And yes, we had to censor the artists names and concert locations due to NDA-type agreements. These stories are crazy/hilarious/fun, but we learned a lot…..A LOT. We also delve into our music backgrounds, how we found our love for choral singing, and the world of session singing!

Roasted in Winter Park, FL, Foxtail Coffee Co. provided today’s beans! We tried a cup of their Farmhouse blend, one of their best-selling coffees. It’s a medium roast with some notes of “cherry, brown sugar, and chocolate.” Try it here!

As two working performers in the musical theatre industry, we’re no strangers to the audition GRIND (sorry, coffee pun). We’ve gathered our favorite (and least favorite) audition and rejection stories from over the years and share the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Consider this a group therapy session for actors.
