In this, the final episode of the Stronger Dads Collective Podcast, I take a moment to reflect, say thanks, and share what’s next. It’s a sign-off, but not the end of the journey. Becoming a Stronger Dad continues.
Thanks for being part of the ride.

This week on the Stronger Dads Newsletter, we're talking systems: simple, repeatable steps that help you stay consistent even when life gets messy. A good system fits your reality, not someone else’s routine. It doesn't have to be perfect, just built around what actually moves the needle.

This week, we’re throwing it back to Episode 95 with Darren Ellis. We explore what it really means to let training complement your life, rather than consume it. As one of the first to bring CrossFit to New Zealand, a former CrossFit Games competitor, and a coach with over two decades of experience, Darren shares plenty of great lessons in this one.

This week on the Stronger Dads Newsletter, we’re talking about how it is getting harder to know what to believe, especially when bold claims are shouted online without solid evidence. This week’s thought is a reminder that anecdotes aren’t data, and critical thinking is your best defence. Focus on the basics, question shortcuts, and remember that real results rarely come from hype.

This week on the podcast I released Episode 99 - Lessons from Failure. In this one I discuss how I took a shot, left secure work to chase a dream, only to end up back job hunting. It taught me five key lessons about networks, taking chances, structure, social media, and the illusion of greener grass. If you’ve ever stumbled after a big decision, this one’s for you.

In Episode 99, I dive into the lessons that come from failure. While we often say there is no such thing as losing, only learning, actually living that out takes work. Just like how missing a lift can show you where you need to improve, but only if you take the time to reflect.

In this episode though, the failure is more personal. I stepped away from secure work to pursue a dream, only to find myself back in the job market. Through that experience, five key lessons have stood out for me: the power of your network, the importance of taking the shot, the challenge of using social media well, the value of structure, and the strange way the grass always seems greener. If you have ever tried, stumbled, or second-guessed a big decision, this one is for you.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

This week on the Stronger Dads Newsletter, we’re talking about choosing the harder path. I reflect on our natural pull toward comfort, from parking closer to avoiding effortful decisions, and why that tendency might be holding us back. Growth usually lies on the more difficult road, and building the habit of doing hard things each day can help us move in the direction that matters most.

We also throw back to Episode 30 when I got to chat with Blair van Stipriaan. He is a husband, dad, teacher, and recently apointed assistant coach of the Manawatū Turbos. We cover his shift from physio to teaching, the evolution of his training goals, and the perspective that training is a choice supported by those around us, not a solo sacrifice.

This week on the Stronger Dads Newsletter, we’re talking about how good things take time. I share a few reflections on our tendency to rush the outcome, and why the things that matter most usually take consistent effort over time. You can be efficient, but you can’t shortcut the process.

I’ve also just dropped a new long-format podcast episode. Head to Episode 98 to check it out on your preferred platform!

This episode is all about letting go of the pressure to train perfectly. I share a few lessons from recent strength research that confirm what many of us need to hear: you can get stronger without going to failure, and you don’t need a huge number of sets every session. We’ll talk through how to apply this in real life — like structuring your training week, setting priorities, and staying consistent even when life’s busy. If you’ve ever felt stuck between “all in” or “not at all,” this one’s for you.

In this episode, I’m joined a husand and father of one, Dr. Daniel Bryson. He is a clinical psychologist and strength coach — a fellow Manawatū local with a interesting mix of experience in exercise science, psychology, and high-performance coaching for military personnel.

We talk about Dan’s path from army medic to clinical doctorate, including the years he spent training and fighting professionally in Thailand, why he decided to study both exercise science and psychology, and how he eventually found his coaching niche with special forces candidates. But we also go deeper into how becoming a dad changes everything — including how you train, how you work, and how you relate to the people closest to you.

Dan shares insights on setting boundaries, managing stress, showing up for your kids (even when exhausted), and the power of simple routines. There’s plenty here for dads, coaches, and anyone trying to keep moving forward when life gets full.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

In this episode, I’m joined by Darren Ellis — husband, father of one, and a coach with over two decades of experience. Darren’s been around the fitness game for a while, founding New Zealand's first CrossFit gym, but what stood out most in our chat was his take on how training should fit into your life, not take it over.

We explore what it really means to let training complement your life instead of consume it. From competing at the CrossFit Games to raising a family and rethinking what matters most, Darren shares how his priorities have shifted — and how that’s shaped the way he trains and coaches today.

We also dig into why chasing arbitrary goals might not be the best use of your limited time — and how redefining success in your 30s and 40s can actually be the most freeing thing you do. Whether you’re training for performance or just trying to move more consistently, this conversation is packed with wisdom for any dad trying to balance fitness, family, and everything in between.

We’ll cover some common myths about strength training stunting growth and causing injuries, what the evidence really shows, and why properly supervised resistance training can set kids up for a lifetime of strength, health, and confidence.

I then break down some differences in how I’d introduce training based on my childs age, why mastering the six key movement patterns is my starting point, and the importance of letting kids find their own athletic path — not forcing them to follow ours. Whether you’re a coach, a parent, or just someone passionate about strength, this episode will help you think about building a strong foundation the right way.

In this episode, I’m joined by Adam Jones—husband, father of two, and coach at Reactive Training Systems. Adam first appeared back in Episode 3, and now he’s back after winning the Men’s 93kg class at the Australian Powerlifting Championships (IPF).

We chat about his training leading up to the competition, the challenges he had to overcome, and how his approach has evolved since becoming a dad. One of the biggest takeaways? You can still achieve great results – and keep progressing – with far less training than you think.

We also explore why many lifters see slower progress as they get older – and how it’s not just about age. Life gets busier, priorities shift, and responsibilities grow – but progress is still possible. Adam shares his approach, along with insights from other lifters, on how to keep moving forward despite the extra responsibilities life throws our way.

In Episode 90, I’m joined by Christopher Conroy. He is a husband and father of two - quite likely three by the time this one is released...

Chris appeared on Episode 74 of the podcast, so is a return guest. Feel free to head back to his previous appearance if you want to hear more about his story and background.

To begin, we discuss how his Dad Training group training has been going, alongside some of the reason and rationale behind it. We then dive into discussing the need to ensure that you're chasing things in life that align with your true priorities. In doing so, we also chatted about some times in Chris' life when he has made changes to ensure he is living to this ethos. I again enjoyed chatting to Chris and hope the conversation provides some value for you.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

In Episode 89, I’m joined by Jeff Hoehn, a husband and father of one. Jeff is a body recomposition health coach and host of The Mind Muscle Connection podcast.

I really enjoyed this chat. Since Jeff’s a new dad, we spent some time talking about how becoming a parent has shaped his approach to training and how he’s handled the challenges that come with those early days of fatherhood. We also covered the fundamentals of improving your body composition, focusing on the key principles - or “big rocks” - you need to nail down to create lasting change.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

In this solo episode, I share some reflections from my recent holiday, touching on the importance of building family traditions and how they create lasting memories. I also outline my training and competition plans for the year ahead and share a glimpse into the direction the podcast is heading in 2025.

The main focus, though, is on the surprising lessons I learned from working with a dog trainer. I dive into the principles that made the experience so valuable and explore how these same concepts can be applied to our own goal-setting and behaviour change. Whether you're chasing personal growth or peak performance, I discuss how coaching can help replicate these benefits and how it can be a game-changer for achieving lasting results.

In Episode 87, I’m joined by Joseph Whittaker, a father of two and elite powerlifter. Back in 2013–2014, I first met Joseph when we competed at IPF Powerlifting meets here in New Zealand. He’s continued competing ever since, recently taking the platform at the Big Dogs Powerlifting Meet, where he totalled an impressive 1055kg.

We talk about his upbringing playing sports alongside 40 cousins, how his strength was an advantage from a young age, and his transition from tested to untested powerlifting. Joseph also shares how as an untested lifter he keeps a close eye on his health while using exogenous hormones, and how he and his partner balance competing with raising a 16-month-old.

I really appreciated Joseph’s honesty, humour, and the way he shared his story so openly. I hope you enjoy the episode!

During the second half of the episode (from ~7min) I discuss the training principles we've discussed previously in the newsletter. I use this longer form episode to dive into those a bit more. The five we talk about are specificity, overload, individuality, moderation and reversibility.

I hope you learn something you can apply into your own training!

In Episode 79, I chat with Paul Talty. He is a husband and father of two.

Paul is recently back from the Olympic Games. As the Head of Physical Preparation at Swim Ireland, Paul had the privilege of being involved at his second Olympic Games.

We chat about the experience of being part of the most successful campaign for Swim Ireland. Our discussion covers all things from being part of the athlete village, to the post-games feelings, as well as comparing Paris 2024 with Tokyo 2020. For a sports fanatic like myself, it was great to get to hear about the real experience of the Games.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

You can find Paul on Instagram by clicking here.

If you want to learn more about Paul's story, go listen to his first appearance on the Stronger Dads Collective Podcast, in Episode 59.

In Episode 78, I sit down with Newton Cheng. He’s a husband and father of two daughters via transracial adoption. Newton is also a world champion powerlifter, a mental health advocate, and the Director of Health and Performance at Google.

We started off chatting about morning training, then we learn how he got into working at Google. The conversation then shifts to discussing what makes a workplace great and how he champions mental health, both at work and in his daily life. Newton shares some insights into the joys and challenges of transracial adoption, and we finish up with the final three.

There were many topics we could’ve talked about for hours in this one. I hope you enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Mike Thompson, who is a husband and father of one.

Our discussion begins with us chatting about the 'good old days' - back when we learned about strength training and how that landscape looked a lot different to it does now. This naturally led us into a discussion of how he got into coaching, more than a decade ago now.

We then shift to Mike's time in the police force, the entry and academy process, and the moment he realised he had to make a change. We then discuss how he transitioned from that work into what he does now, discovering the unplanned journey he took to get into coaching full time, working with busy men who also want to transform their lives through physical training.

You can follow Mike @mjttraining on Instagram.

Enjoy the episode.

In this weeks episode I initially discuss how Project 300 is going. Providing an update around how my training has gone over the last nineteen weeks working with Sebastian Oreb. Next week is week twenty, and a chance to test my maxes. Listen in to see how things have been progressing.

The main topic of the day is a discussion around how I fit things in - or what could also be called prioritisation and planning. I was asked by someone at work how I fit all the various things I do in, so I thought I would have a bit of a chat about how I go about doing just that. Sharing a few of the systems I have in place to make it all work.

Enjoy the episode.

Often, overthinking prevents us from doing things we know we need to do if we are going to reach our goals. In this episode we talk about using Mel Robbins five-second rule to help us bypass hesitation and prompt us into immediate action. We also discuss another effective strategy, reducing friction - a concept from James Clear which involves preparing in advance to make it easier to take action in the moment.

I hope this week you can use the learnings from this episode to help you focus on implementing systems that help you take action towards your goals. By making the process smoother through reducing friction and taking action quickly before thinking yourself out of it.

Enjoy the episode!

Forgive me if I am not as sharp as usual, I was out of action for a few days this week with sickness. Hence, I thought it was timely to discuss training when sick. Will rest make you weak? Are you too sick to train? As well as telling you to stay out of the gym if you're contagious! In discussing this topic I mentioned checking out Barbell Medicine, so here is their website. You can find my "Don't Fear Rest" article by clicking here.

Remember, I am not a medical doctor, you should consult with your own physician for specific guidance and advice.

The other topic of the day was the six key movement patterns. What are they? Why should you use them? You can grab my free guide (and example program) by clicking here.

In this episode I have a conversation with Marshall Rowe. He is a husband and father of three.

We go a bit off piste in this one. Rather than diving into Marshall's full story, we end up spending most of the episode talking about fertility challenges, birth stories, and the early days of parenting. I hope it provides a bit of an insight into the males perspective during these often challenging times. It was great to sit down with Marshall, as it was the IVF story of him and his wife that helped my wife and I a lot as we navigated our IVF journey. I'm appreciative for their vulnerability and openness, as it is a journey into the unknown.

Our conversation begins with some Rugby World Cup chat, before we delve into discussing his childhood and the pathway he took to his role as a Strength and Conditioning Coach in professional sport. This week I am joined by Dr Matthew Barnes, an expert on the impacts of alcohol on recovery and performance, to discuss exactly that!

We've spoken to Matt back in Episode 39, and learned a bit about his story. So if you haven't already listened to that, feel free to jump back there and check it out.

In this episode, we talk through Matt's studies related to how alcohol impacts recovery from exercise. This was the topic he completed his PhD in and something he has also written more about since (review article linked below). We had hoped to chat about recovery modalities in general, but we will get to that next time.

You can find his mentioned review article here - Alcohol: Impact on Sports Performance and Recovery in Male Athletes.

It was great to catch up with Matt again, apologies if the audio is a little lower quality at times! You're welcome to donate to the podcast if you want to ensure better-quality audio... haha.

Enjoy the episode!

Sign up to my newsletter at www.strongerdads.co.nzThis week I am joined by Jim Wendler. He is a husband and father of two. Jim is the creator and author of the 531 training program. A program I followed - and had good results from - early in my Powerlifting days (see my blog about it here).

We had a great discussion about Jim's early years and his drive to be successful at Football, where he played for the University of Arizona. It was interesting to learn about his ability to focus on a process and develop a plan - not just set a goal - when he was trying to achieve something. A trait he seems to have carried through to more than just his athletic feats. We then discuss how he got into Powerlifting, meeting Dave Tate, and also how the 531 program came to be. We also cover aspects of raising young men and some of the approaches Jim takes to this important role.

I have gained a lot from Jim's work over the years - so it was great to get to have a chat with him.

Enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Stephen Pritchard. He is a husband and father of three. Stephen is a Kiwi who has been living in Australia for the last couple of decades. We were competing at international Powerlifting events from around 2012-2014 and although he was competing for Australia (and we aren't actually related), he became known as 'Uncle Steve'.

In this episode, we chat through Steve's story. He talks about how teachers and others around him didn't really give him a chance because of his home life, yet he managed to have some key people along the way who provided positive input at vital times. We discuss how he went on to get a PhD, whilst being a new parent, and chat about his journey in Powerlifting.

We had a great chat and I really enjoyed learning more about Steve's story!

Enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Brandon Swan. He is a husband and father, and also a five-time CrossFit Games athlete, a firefighter, and the founder of Dad Hours.

We had a great chat, initially discussing all about what Dad Hours and how it came to be. We then jumped into Brandon's story, talking about his upbringing, his competitive nature, and his journey to competing at the CrossFit Games. We chat about some of the challenges he has been through after a few years competing at the pinnacle of the sport before he missed out on the Games, and how he worked through that disappointment.

Our conversation then moves to his decision to become a firefighter, and how his training has evolved as he has shifted from a full-time athlete to being a father with a full-time job. I love his approach to fitting in training and I think you will too.

Zach Powell is back on the podcast. His previous appearance was back in Episode 8, so be sure to go listen to that one too, if you haven't already.

We chat about how Zach has been managing busy workload in a way that ensures he can still be a present father, specifically about how he goes about switching off at home - forgetting work - and focusing on his family.

We then spend a bit of time talking about his experience at the Leadville 100 and his competitive aspirations looking forward.

Also, to correct myself, Zach is the third guest to make a second appearance on the podcast. It was great to have him back - always enjoying chatting with him.

Enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Mark Novak of The Strong Dad Club. Mark is a husband and father of two. He works as a firefighter, as well as helping Dads in their health and fitness journeys through his work with The Strong Dad Club.

In this episode, we chat about the transition that occurs when going from one to two kids. We discuss Mark's background and how he got interested in fitness and then into his coaching. We spend time talking about how the "All or Nothing" principle can be detrimental to new parents who want to continue to be active, and how "Something is Better than Nothing" is a much more helpful approach to building habits and keeping consistent.

I enjoyed talking to Mark and I hope you enjoy the episode!

Dr Cliff Harvey is a father of two and a partner of one. He is a Clinical Nutritionist, author, educator, and all-round weightlifter. He holds a PhD from AUT and has published numerous academic papers.

I have known Cliff for a decade and have always enjoyed his approach. He has a curious scientific mind and I think that shows in his approach to problem solving and the questions he is willing to ask.

In this episode, we talk about his upbringing and how he got interested in training and nutrition. We discuss his sporting background and how he found all-round weightlifting. We also learn about his unorthodox path to his PhD and how various mentors have impacted his direction in life.

Was great to catch up with Cliff!

Enjoy the episode.

This week I have a solo episode for you.

Hear me reminisce over the All Black's success in the World Cup Quarterfinals, and chat about what Johnny Sexton's son said to him after the Irish defeat.

I then give a bit of an update on my training towards the "161" hybrid goal of a 161kg Front Squat and a sub-six 1.61km run (aka a mile).

Finally, I discuss some brief tips around how you can utilise your environment, specifically the 'things' and 'people' in your environment, to help set you up for success in your health and fitness goals.

Enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Dr Matthew Barnes. Matt is a husband and father of two teenagers. He is an Associate Professor at Massey University in Palmerston North and was one of my PhD supervisors.

I have Matt to thank for getting me into Powerlifting. When I was studying at Massey he noticed I was relatively strong and encouraged me to give it a try. To be fair his enthusiasm for research and our many yarns about strength training during my studies probably also helped move me into that field too!

In this episode we discuss Matt's childhood, growing up in a small town in the deep South of New Zealand. We talk about his days working in pubs, playing rugby, and how influential people impacted the direction he took in both his training and life. We also hear how getting hit by a rogue golf ball put an end to his rugby-playing days.

The episode finishes with us chatting about some of his philosophies around parenting and how he encourages his kids to be active but doesn't force them into specific sports. It was great to get to chat with Matt and learn his story!

We'll definitely be getting Matt back on to discuss some more of his academic research, I'm keen to dig into some of his insights into recovery from exercise. Expect to hear him on the podcast again in the future.

Enjoy the episode.

Mike Tuchscherer is back on the podcast after recently making his return to International Powerlifting competition.

It's been great to follow along with his training over the past few years as he's built himself back to the top levels of competition and is now achieving regular training PRs. It was great to get into some of the details of the processes he's taken, and some of the ways he's managed his training load to not only be performing well but feeling good whilst doing so.

We also discuss some of the ways training has changed as his kids have grown older, chat about very low-RPE training and social impacts on training, as well as generally talk shop about training. I always enjoy having the chance to sit down and chat with Mike!

Enjoy the episode.

This week I am joined by Alan Thrall. He is a husband and father of two. Alan is the owner of Untamed Strength - a gym based in Sacramento, California - an online coach for Barbell Medicine, and a strength athlete who has done it all, from Powerlifting to Strongman.

In this episode, we chat about his childhood and his early experiences being coached in the barbell lifts for American Football, his time in the Marine Corps, what got him into owning a gym and starting a YouTube channel, and we spend some time chatting about how his training has evolved since having children.

It was great to chat through his approach to training as a parent, and some of the ways he tries to be a great Dad. I learned plenty from his approach!

This week I'm joined by Ben Polke. He is a husband and father who, like my previous two guests, is based across the ditch in Australia.

I first met Ben about a decade ago when I was looking for a place to train while holidaying on the Gold Coast, at that time he was running Gold Coast Barbell. We then competed together at several competitions, and I've continued to follow him since.

In this one we chatted about Ben's upbringing, how he got into competing and coaching in the sport of Powerlifting, his adult diagnosis of ADHD and what he's learnt about himself through that journey, and discussed expectations in parenting. Thanks for such an open and honest chat mate!

This week I am joined by Aussie Bench Press legend Nathan Baxter. He is a husband and father to two teenage girls.

We start this one by jumping back to 2014 when Nathan helped a Kiwi lad (me) out when I missed a deadlift on my second attempt and needed to hit that weight to secure the U93 title at the Oceania Champs. I'll always be appreciative of his support that day.

We chat about his time spent living in Karratha - a remote mining town in Western Australia, how he got into competing in Powerlifting as a means of continuing to do cool things after having kids, and we chat about his recent health challenges, and what he's aiming to achieve over the next wee while. It was a great yarn!

This week I am joined by another guest from across the Tasman - Sebastian Oreb. He is a husband and father to two daughters.

Known as Australian Strength Coach on social media, Sebastian has been a strength coach for 20 years and worked with athletes from Rugby League to Powerlifting. As a Powerlifter he achieved an elite 940kg total - so he's done his time in the trenches as an athlete at the highest level of his sport.

Our discussion covered how the birth of his first daughter was what lit a spark in him to take his coaching and business to the next level, his coaching of 2018 Worlds Strongest Man Hafþór (Thor) Björnsson, the emphasis he now places on health and longevity with his athletes, and much more. It was an enjoyable discussion!

This week I am joined by Mr Blair van Stipriaan. He is a husband and father of two who works as a Senior Master and Teacher at Palmerston North Boys' High School (PNBHS) - the school I attended as a teenager.

Blair is also a rugby coach who currently coaches the PNBHS 1st XV and Varsity Senior A's - who recently won the Hankins Shield. He's also a man of many fitness talents who now competes in Indoor Rowing, and has previously completed an Ironman, run ultramarathons and competed in surf boat rowing!

In this episode we discuss his journey to become a physiotherapist before transitioning to secondary teaching, how he's switched his fitness goals based on the season of life, and how we shouldn't view our decision to train as a sacrifice from us - but of those around us, who allow us to make the choice to train. Plenty of wisdom throughout this one.

This week I am joined by Dr Michael Zourdos. He's a husband and a father of one. Dr Zourdos works as a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion at Florida Atlantic University. He also writes for the MASS research review.

I have followed Dr Zourdos' research for many years. Some of the most interesting areas (to me) he has spent time in are daily maximum squatting - both publishing about and being his own test case! - and daily undulating periodisation. It was great to spend some time chatting together in this episode.

During this episode we cover his current training focus for the marathon, dive into his history and how he got into his current working role, we also chat about some of the ways he and his wife work together to ensure each has the opportunity to do things they enjoy, and more.

Enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Kurt Baker. He's a husband and a father of two. Kurt has had a succesful career in professional rugby - including winning 2x Commonwealth Games Gold Medals and an Olympic Silver Medal with the All Blacks Sevens. He's currently playing and coaching for Old Glory DC.

I have known Kurt since high school, having been part of PNBHS's 4x100m senior relay team together. Since that time I've followed his sporting career and it was great to sit down and have a yarn.

In this episode we chat about his background, some of the things he's learned from coaches along the way, as well as how his competitiveness affects his approach to the game. We also discuss some of the ways having kids has influenced him and the current challenges associated with being based away from the family.

Enjoy the episode!

Something a little different this week for episode number twenty-one - bringing together all of the advice for new dads given by guests in response to the first question of the final three, that we conclude all episodes with. It's a shorter episode with plenty of good tips.

This week I am joined by Dr Eric Helms. Eric has competed in a range of strength sports at a high level and has a wealth of 'hands-on' experience coaching strength athletes. On top of this practical expertise, he is a top-notch exercise scientist with many publications to his name.

I have known Eric for over a decade, one of my early memories is sharing a warm-up platform at the 2013 Commonwealth and Oceania Powerlifting Championships in Auckland. We also completed our PhDs at a similar time and I had the privilege of graduating alongside Dr Helms in 2017.

In this episode, we chat about Eric's background in strength sports - as an athlete and coach - and his pathway to his current roles, where he is a man of many talents. After this we jump into a discussion focused on concurrent training - what it is, whether we should be scared of it, and how we can practically mitigate some of the potential impacts.

If you are interested in Eric's books you can check them out by clicking here, or for the MASS research review he contributes to you can click here. Note that these are affiliate links.

Oh, and apologies for my audio which was a little dodgy near the start...

This week I'm joined by Stephen O'Loughlin, a father of four, with three daughters and a son.

Steve and I have known each other since I started dating my wife, as he was her cousin's partner at the time. As newbies to the family, we would often end up chatting with one another and we developed a friendship from there.

In this episode we chatted through Steve's childhood, growing up for the early part of this in Ireland before moving to New Zealand. Whilst he played sports during his youth, we discussed how he wasn't really a competitive guy but rather played for camaraderie and friendship - some of which he has to this day. We spent plenty of time discussing how since becoming a dad he's always prioritised his role as a father. To finish we talked through some of the strategies he used to drop over 40kg and keep it off.

This week I am joined by Josh Saua. He is a husband and a father of one daughter, with another on the way.

I have known Josh since my teenage years, we went to the same high school - but were in different year groups. He has always had a disciplined mindset and has been a genuine guy to sit down and yarn with.

We had a great discussion on this one. Covering the PNBHS experiences, him playing in the first fifteen and then got into his life in the military, before diving into how he tries to create a great marriage and prioritise his family amongst the demands of working life.

This week I am joined by Tyler Simpson, aka MT. He is a father of two and a two-time NZ Strongest Man.

I met MT in the early 2010's, we competed at numerous Powerlifting competitions together - albeit in different divisions. He's always been a supportive guy who was enthusiastic and dedicated to his craft. I have followed his strength endeavours ever since this time, you can find him on Instagram @mr_consistent_mt.

We had a good yarn on this one. Discussing his journey in strength sports and how he got into Strongman, we came to terms with the fact that we would both be far less competitive if we competed against the Powerlifting talent pool these days, as well as jumping into some of the key learnings from parenthood so far, and how sport can be a positive influence for children and parents alike.

This week I am joined by Dr Pak Androulakis-Korakakis. He is a researcher and strength coach. Our first 'non-dad' guest!

Pak and I have connected previously through the academic world, because of our mutual interest in strength training research. His PhD was focused on the minimum effective dose for strength training, a topic of particular interest to Dads and other time-poor individuals who want to make progress in their training but may not be able to train "optimally".

Our conversation spanned from Pak's childhood years of growing up in several countries, how he got interested in his specific research area, and how he applies the concepts he has learned with his own clients. Plenty of practical takeaways in this one.

This week I am joined by Te Rangipai Renata. He is a father of two, a weapon at CrossFit, and works in the education sector.

I met Te Rangipai last year when our paths crossed in our mahi, only to learn that he had trained at the same gym as my brother - small world. He has truly done it all in an athletic sense, from ballet to BJJ. Sport has always been a part of his life.

We had a great chat that covered many aspects of his sporting background, the great example of fatherhood he had from his own Dad, and how he considers the influence he is able to have through his work life. Plenty of gems in this one.

Traditionally strength athletes don't like to do cardio. However, given the benefits of aerobic activity, it's something I'd recommend incorporating into almost any training routine.

For Dads, I think the two key benefits are its potential to increase your longevity (i.e. health benefits) and also the fact that it can help you be a more involved and active Dad that can keep up with your kid(s).

So... How much aerobic activity should you do? How hard should it be? Where could you place it within the context of a strength athletes program? Tune in to find out!

Enjoy the episode, oh, and the thumbnail image for this episode... haha.

Disclaimer: Be sure to consult with your medical professional before beginning any new exercise routine.

This week I am joined by Mike Tuchscherer. He is a husband and father of four. He is the founder of Reactive Training Systems, a World Games Powerlifting Champion, and has set multiple IPF World Records.

Mike is well known in the Powerlifting scene and was one of the early influences on my training and coaching practices after following him online and reading his book, the RTS Manual. Following this early influence, I was then coached by Mike in the lead-up to the 2013 IPF World Champs in Russia and later I also coached as part of the RTS team in 2021-2022.

We chatted about his time in the United States Air Force Academy and working as a missileer, how he met his wife, and we spent plenty of time discussing how he has been able to continue to prioritise his training and being a business owner as a Dad. I really enjoyed chatting with Mike about things not so focused on training concepts, it was great to learn more about these other aspects of his life.

This week I am joined by David Henderson. He is a husband and father of four. He works as a primary school teacher in Palmerston North and is a keen CrossFitter.

I met David when I was training at the local CrossFit gym - CrossFit Mana. His enthusiasm and friendliness meant he was someone you were always happy to work out alongside!

We chatted about his childhood and how he got into teaching, then got into discussing parenthood and how he uses his own journey into health, fitness, and mindset to inspire others. I really enjoyed the conversation and getting to know David more, I hope you enjoy the episode!

This week I am joined by Colin Webb. He is a husband and father of two. He is the owner and head coach at Panthers Powerlifting in Brisbane, Australia.

I first met Colin in 2013 when we competed at the IPF Powerlifting World Championships in Suzdal, Russia. He has been called the 'nicest guy in Australian Powerlifting', which I think is a solid assessment.

We chatted about his background in rugby league (including the story of him breaking his face... twice), how he transitioned from being a qualified mechanic to a strength coach, and discuss how he and his wife have navigated the logistical challenges presented in raising children while working in jobs with such differing schedules.

This week I am joined by Zach Powell. He's a husband and a father of two. He coaches parents who want to get stronger and compete in endurance events.

I have followed Zach on Instagram for a while now and I enjoy the content he puts out and his approach to training. He has a background in Olympic Weightlifting, having competed for almost a decade before having his first child. Shortly thereafter he became interested in running and began combining strength and endurance pursuits.

In this episode, we discuss his background and his approach to training before and after having children. We spend a bit of time discussing the challenges of switching from an athletic pursuit that had been a part of your identity. Finally, we chat about how his lessons from training with as a new dad have helped him in his coaching of other parents, and the things he has learned through these coaching relationships.

Was a great yarn and I hope you enjoy it!

This week I have the privilege of diving into a conversation about a major lifestyle change of a former colleague, and good friend, Manaia Cunningham.

Manaia is a husband and father of four. Over a team dinner in 2022, he told us he was going to make some big changes in order to lose weight and improve his health and well-being - to avoid being a statistic.

He has provided me with plenty of inspiration over the last six months and I really enjoyed our honest and open kōrero. I hope you do too!

In this episode we delve into his background, and discuss how his training habits and mindset have shifted as he's moved into fatherhood.
