More to the Story with Dr. Andy Miller III is a new podcast exploring theology in the orthodox Wesleyan tradition. Hear engaging interviews and musings from Dr. Miller each week.
There is a significant gap in current theological literature. Caleb Friedeman and his co-authors (McCall and Friedema) argue that by jettisoning a doctrine of good works, the contemporary church contradicts historical Protestantism and, more importantly, biblical teaching. This book surveys historical Protestant teaching to show the importance of the doctrine to our forebears, engages the scriptural testimony on the role of good works, formulates a theology of salvation and good works, and explores pastoral applications. I enjoyed this conversation with Caleb Friedeman.

Is Christianity no longer relevant? Today in the west, many consider the church to be dead or dying. Christianity is seen as outdated, bigoted, and responsible for many of society’s problems. This leaves many believers embarrassed about their faith and many outsiders wary of religion. But what if the Christian message is not the enemy of our modern Western values, but the very thing that makes sense of them?
I had this fascinating conversation with Glen Scrivener who helped me see how the teachings of Jesus not only turned the ancient world upside down, but continue to underpin the way we think of life, worth, and meaning. Far from being a relic from the past, the distinctive ideas of Christianity, such as freedom, kindness, progress, and equality, are a crucial part of the air that we breathe.

Recently The Salvation Army in the Netherlands has issued a statement saying they are departing from the International Salvation Army’s stance on sexuality. This move is a part of a wider trend of mixed messages on human sexuality in The Salvation Army. Here’s a link to an article where I document some of these trends. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Moore’s desire to teach led her to earn a BA in Education and Mathematics from National College of Education (National-Louis University) in 1982 and an MDiv from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1989. A John Wesley Fellowship (2001-2005) from A Foundation for Theological Education enabled her to work on a Ph.D. in Practical Theology, which she earned from Brunel University/London School of Theology in 2007. She joined the faculty of Luther Seminary in July 2019 to teach Biblical Preaching.
Joy grew up in the American Midwest on Chicago’s southside attending Commonwealth Community Church, where she was spiritually formed and experienced a call to Christian Ministry. Professor Moore is currently President of the Wesleyan Theological Society and an avid fan of books by David Baldacci and John Hart. When not teaching, she enjoys traveling, watching episodes of NCIS, and reading. Currently, she is reading the works of Octavia E. Butler and Lord Jonathan Sacks. (and yes, she is fascinated by the Marvel Universe!)

Has The Salvation Army gone woke? Last week, a dozen people reached out to me asking about the validity of several articles that pointed to woke trends in the Army. I link those articles below. One of the people who reached out to me was my colleague and friend, Dr. Matt Friedeman. He and I combined podcasts to talk through this matter. Here are the links:

Dr. Ed McKinley suggests in his definitive history of The Salvation Army in the USA, Marching to Glory, that early salvationist:
…were a little concerned with theories of social justice; they knew only that they’re Heavenly Commander and ordered His soldiers to take in strangers, visit the sick and imprisoned, and offer a drink to the thirsty and food to the hungry. They also knew that there were souls dying all around and that the first step in saving some of them was to lift them up so they could hear that such a thing as salvation existed. (68)
This description is the essence of Salvationism, and I believe these actions are being realized in most Salvation Army units around the world. The Army is at a clear crossroads in its history, and I address that in today’s podcast.

The Wesleyan Quadrilateral is a misunderstood tool in theology. Several people sent a video my way from the Included Conference (a virtual event) and encouraged me to respond. In that video, a well-known speaker in Salvation Army circles describes his theological evolution to embrace a progressive understanding of human sexuality (find the link below). The speaker, Chick Yuill, in the 1980s, wrote clear catechesis material on this topic and now “washes his hands” of what he wrote then.
This message got my attention. What troubled me most in this presentation was the way he employed the Wesleyan Quadrilateral in his argument. This podcast represents my general response to that presentation. You can a YouTube link to this new podcast here:

Remembering Dr. Billy Abraham - Promoted to Glory
Two weeks ago, Dr. Billy Abraham was promoted to glory. He was a giant figure in the evangelical Wesleyan movement. Billy was on my doctoral dissertation committee, he endorsed my first book, and he was one of the first to push me toward the academy. On today’s podcast, I have a conversation with Drs. Most denominations are having to focus their attention on issues of human sexuality. This concern is downstream from larger theological matters of revelation and the human body. Is spiritual warfare something we should study? Can we know very much about the spiritual world?
