John 1:18 appears differently across modern Bible translations. Some read “God the only Son,” while the King James Version reads “the only begotten Son.” What accounts for this variation, and does the original Greek text identify Jesus as “God the Son”?

Dr. David K. Bernard examines the manuscript evidence behind John 1:18 and explains how textual criticism helps scholars evaluate variant readings. He also discusses the reliability of the biblical text, why he believes the traditional reading best reflects John’s original wording, and how the passage supports the biblical revelation of Jesus Christ.

Does Jesus’ appeal to “two witnesses” in John 8 prove that the Father and the Son are two separate divine persons?

During a heated exchange with the Pharisees, Jesus declared, “I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me” (John 8:18, NKJV). Because He was invoking an Old Testament legal standard requiring two witnesses, some Trinitarians argue that His words contradict Oneness theology.

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines the biblical, legal, and theological context of this challenging passage. He explains why Jesus appealed to the two-witness principle, how the Father testified concerning the Son, and how this exchange fits John's overall message about the identity of Jesus.

Many Christians appreciate heartfelt worship, but where is the line between genuine spiritual expression and emotionalism? Critics have long argued that Pentecostals place too much emphasis on feelings, while Pentecostals maintain that biblical faith engages both the heart and the mind.

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines the biblical role of emotions in the Christian life and addresses one of the most common criticisms of Pentecostal worship. He explains what Scripture teaches about the role of emotional expression in worship and how Pentecostals should respond to accusations that they elevate emotion above biblical truth.

Whether you are a lifelong Pentecostal, new to the faith, or simply interested in learning what the Bible says about worship, this episode provides a balanced, biblical perspective on the relationship between truth and emotion in corporate worship and in the life of the individual believer.

Did Peter and Paul preached different gospels? Some proponents of hyper-dispensationalism argue that the church did not begin on the Day of Pentecost but later with the ministry of the apostle Paul. If that were true, they contend, Peter’s message in Acts 2—including his command to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ—was intended for Israel alone and is not binding on the church today.

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines the biblical claims behind hyper-dispensationalism and explains why the New Testament consistently presents one gospel, one church, and one plan of salvation. He explores the relationship between the ministries of Peter and Paul, the significance of the Day of Pentecost, and the continuing relevance of Acts 2:38 for believers today.

Whether you’ve encountered hyper-dispensationalist arguments online or simply want to better understand the relationship between Israel, the church, Peter, and Paul, this episode will help you interpret the New Testament with greater confidence and biblical clarity.

What is the biblical role of an evangelist?

Many Christians associate evangelists with traveling revival preachers who move from church to church preaching special services. While that model has been common in Pentecostal circles, is it the same role the apostle Paul described in Ephesians 4:11?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard explores the New Testament ministry of the evangelist and explains why this calling remains essential to the church today. Drawing from Scripture, he discusses how evangelists fit within the ministry gifts Christ gave to the church, how their work differs from that of pastors and teachers, and how they help fulfill the church’s mission of reaching the lost.

Whether you serve in ministry, feel called to evangelistic work, or simply want a deeper understanding of biblical church leadership, this episode offers practical insight into one of the most important ministry roles in the New Testament.

Daniel 7 records one of the most dramatic visions in Scripture. In it, the prophet Daniel sees the Ancient of Days seated on a heavenly throne while “one like the Son of Man” approaches Him and receives an everlasting kingdom.

This passage raises an important theological question: Does this vision reveal two distinct divine persons, or is it portraying something else?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines Daniel 7:9-28 and addresses a common challenge raised against Oneness theology. He explores the identities of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man and discusses whether Daniel’s vision teaches the preexistence of the Son as a separate divine person. Along the way, Dr. Bernard considers what Daniel’s prophecy reveals about the Messiah, the Incarnation, and the relationship between Jesus Christ and the Father.

Whether you are studying the Godhead, exploring the differences between Trinitarian and Oneness theology, or seeking a deeper understanding of one of Scripture’s most fascinating prophetic visions, this episode offers a thoughtful examination of a frequently debated passage.

What does it mean to “grieve the Holy Spirit,” and should Christians be concerned about it today?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines Paul's warning in Ephesians 4:30: “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” While many believers have heard this phrase throughout their lives, its meaning is often misunderstood.

He also discusses the relationship between conviction, spiritual growth, and Christian obedience, showing why this warning remains relevant for every follower of Christ.

In this episode, you'll discover:

• What Scripture means by grieving the Holy Spirit
• Why Paul connects this warning to everyday behavior and relationships
• How the Holy Spirit works to transform believers into the image of Christ
• The dangers of resisting the Spirit's conviction over time
• Whether persistent disobedience can affect a person's salvation

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, UPCI General Superintendent Dr. David K. Bernard offers biblical and pastoral guidance for one of the most sensitive situations a church may face. Apostolic Pentecostals believe baptism is part of the biblical plan of salvation described in Acts 2:38, but pastors must also consider the God-given authority of parents, the age and maturity of the child, and the long-term spiritual impact of their response.

Dr. Bernard explains why pastors should respect parental rights, follow the Golden Rule, and trust the grace and mercy of God while ministering to children and families with wisdom, patience, and compassion.

Prompted by current global conflicts and the reflection that often accompanies Memorial Day, this conversation addresses questions Christians have wrestled with for centuries. In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard addresses an important question about divine healing and the gifts of the Spirit.

In 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul lists the “gifts of healing” (verse 9) among the spiritual gifts and makes it clear that not every believer operates in this gift (verse 30). Yet in Mark 16:18, Jesus said believers would lay hands on the sick and they would recover.

Is healing a special ministry given only to certain individuals, or is it a sign that can follow any Spirit-filled believer? Dr. Bernard responds to this important question, offering clarity and balance on a topic that is central to Pentecostal theology and practice.

What does it really mean to be “called” to a ministry?

In Pentecostal circles, pastors often testify that God specifically led them to a church, city, or ministry assignment. Congregations likewise take comfort in believing their pastor was divinely directed, not merely hired like someone applying for a job.

But that raises an important question.

After seeing a church advertise a pastoral opening on Facebook, a viewer asked: If ministry is truly a calling from God, is it appropriate to post pastor vacancies publicly like any other job opportunity? Does that diminish the sacred nature of pastoral ministry, or can churches faithfully combine spiritual discernment with practical processes?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines the biblical concept of calling, the relationship between divine guidance and church decision-making, and how ministers and congregations can navigate pastoral transitions in a Spirit-led way.

Whether you are a pastor, church leader, ministry student, or faithful church member, this conversation offers thoughtful insight into one of the most important aspects of church life and leadership.

With the Pope once again in the global spotlight, questions about his authority—and the authority of the church he leads—are drawing renewed attention.

Both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church claim an unbroken line of leadership stretching back to the apostles. According to this view, today’s bishops—and ultimately the Pope—stand in direct succession to the apostle Peter.

But how strong is this claim?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines whether there is credible historical evidence for an unbroken chain of authority—and whether such a lineage, even if proven, would establish theological authority.

Dr. Bernard discusses:

  • The origins and development of apostolic succession claims
  • The biblical role of Peter in the early church
  • The difference between historical continuity and doctrinal authority
  • Why apostolic teaching—not just succession—is essential to the identity of the church

This timely episode brings clarity to a complex and often misunderstood topic, helping listeners evaluate competing claims through the lens of Scripture.

If you’ve ever wondered how to assess claims of church authority—or what truly defines the New Testament church—this episode offers thoughtful, balanced, and biblical insight.

Can We Really Do Greater Works than Jesus?Apostolic Life in the 21st Century with Dr. David K. Bernard

In John 14:12, Jesus made a remarkable promise: “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do.” But what did He mean?

Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and demonstrated power over nature itself. How could believers possibly do “greater” works than these?

In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard provides clear, biblical insight into this passage. Rather than pointing to greater individual miracles, he explains how Jesus’ words reveal the expanded scope of His work through the church—empowered by the Holy Spirit and fulfilled through the global spread of the gospel after Pentecost.

Did Jesus Go Preach in Hell?

What happened between Good Friday and Easter Sunday?

Christians around the world pause each year to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We commemorate His crucifixion on Good Friday and celebrate His resurrection on Easter Sunday—but what does the Bible say about the time in between?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines key passages such as Acts 2:27 and 1 Peter 3:19, which are often interpreted to mean that Jesus descended into Hell and preached to imprisoned spirits. Did Christ actually go to Hell? Was He preaching to the lost? Or are these verses commonly misunderstood?

With careful attention to Scripture, Dr. Bernard offers a clear and biblically grounded explanation of what Jesus was doing between His death and resurrection. This episode helps listeners separate tradition from biblical teaching while deepening their understanding of Christ’s finished work.

Can We Derive Doctrine from Bible Stories?Apostolic Life in the 21st Century with Dr. David K. Bernard

Nearly 60 percent of the Bible is written in narrative form. Instead of presenting theology in systematic outlines, Scripture often teaches through stories, especially in books such as Acts. But can doctrine be established from these narratives?

In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard addresses a foundational question of biblical interpretation: How do we distinguish between what is merely descriptive in Scripture and what is prescriptive for the church today?

Referencing his book Understanding God’s Word, Dr. Bernard challenges the common Western assumption that the propositional teaching of the Epistles carries more theological authority than the examples recorded in Acts. He explains why narrative passages are not secondary theology and why the practices of the early church matter for doctrine.

With biblical clarity, Dr. Bernard explores how to properly interpret Scripture and why the example of the early church remains essential for believers today.

This episode is a thoughtful and practical guide for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of hermeneutics, apostolic doctrine, and the authority of Scripture.

Episode 252: Should Women Wear Head Coverings When They Pray?

In 1 Corinthians 11:5–6, the apostle Paul wrote that a woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered “dishonors her head.” Did Paul mean that women should wear a literal, physical head covering when they pray?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard carefully examines 1 Corinthians 11 and makes the case that a woman’s uncut hair is given to her as her covering. At the same time, Dr. Bernard acknowledges that in some cultures, Oneness Pentecostals practice wearing a literal head covering during prayer. While he does not believe this was Paul’s original intent, he expresses respect for those who observe this practice as a matter of conviction and cultural application.

This episode offers thoughtful biblical interpretation, clarity on Apostolic practice, and balanced guidance for believers seeking to apply Scripture faithfully in today’s world.

Family relationships are being reexamined across today’s culture, as more adult children choose to cut off contact with their parents in the name of “boundaries.” What began as a broader social trend is now affecting Christian and Apostolic families as well.

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard addresses a challenging and deeply personal question: Does Scripture support an adult Christian cutting ties with Christian parents?

With biblical clarity and pastoral sensitivity, Dr. Bernard explores the command to honor father and mother (Exodus 20:12), the role of healthy boundaries, and personal responsibility in strained relationships. Rather than adopting cultural narratives uncritically, this conversation invites believers to evaluate family conflict through the lens of Scripture.

This episode was inspired by a recent article from The Federalist highlighting the growing trend of family estrangement.

Has the Church Replaced Israel in God’s Plan?Apostolic Life in the 21st Century with Dr. David K. Bernard

In light of ongoing global attention on the nation of Israel, many Christians are revisiting an important theological question: Has the church replaced Israel in God’s plan, or does God still have a future purpose for the Jewish people?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard offers a thoughtful, biblically grounded answer rooted in passages such as Romans 9–11 and Galatians 4. He explains that the church is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan, with Israel playing a vital role in bringing forth the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Through Christ, God’s promises are fulfilled not by ethnicity, but by faith, as both Jews and Gentiles are invited into the church through the work of the Holy Spirit.

At the same time, Dr. Bernard clarifies that this truth does not mean God is finished with the nation of Israel. Scripture indicates that God still has a purpose and plan for their salvation.

This episode brings biblical clarity and balance to a complex and often emotional topic. If you’re seeking a scriptural perspective on Israel, the church, and God’s plan of salvation, this conversation is essential listening.

Does the Didache teach Trinitarian baptism?

In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines the Didache, an early Christian document frequently cited in debates over baptism and early church practice. The Didache includes instructions to baptize “into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” as well as guidance related to fasting before baptism. But how authoritative is this document, and how should it be understood today?

Dr. Bernard explores the historical background and reliability of the Didache and contrasts it with the clear teaching of Scripture and the practice of the early church. This episode provides thoughtful, biblically grounded insight into biblical baptism, church history, and Apostolic doctrine.

Whether you’re a pastor, theology student, or believer seeking deeper understanding, this discussion will help clarify an important and often misunderstood topic.

On this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Trinitarians sometimes argue that 1 John 4:8 ("God is love") demands that God be triune in nature. In his popular book Mere Christianity, Christian apologist C. S. If God was a single person, then before the world was made, He was not love.” Dr. David K. Paul's description of the end of the age in 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 has confused many readers. The apostle wrote, “Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power” (verse 24). He later added, “And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all" (verse 28). Taken at face value, Paul seems to imply not only a distinction between the Father and the Son, but also a subordinate role for the Son.

Dr. David K. Bernard reviews what the Bible says about the sonship of Jesus Christ and explains how Paul's description of the end of the age fits within that framework.

A school of thought within Christianity known as preterism argues that the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation already have been fulfilled. Proponents of preterism say the destruction of Jerusalem by Roman armies in AD 70 was the culmination of Bible prophecy, so there will be no future Tribulation or other so-called “end time” events. But is this teaching compatible with Pentecostal theology?

Dr. David K. Bernard examines the inherent flaws of preterism and shows why it is inconsistent with biblical teaching and Pentecostal theology.

In Matthew 28:19, Jesus told His disciples to baptize their converts "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” So why did Peter preach that believers should "be baptized ... in the name of Jesus Christ" (Acts 2:38)? How do we reconcile this apparent discrepancy between what Jesus commanded and what Peter said on the Day of Pentecost?

Dr. David K. Bernard examines the context of Jesus' words at the conclusion of Matthew's Gospel and explains how to bridge the seeming gap between what Jesus said and what His disciples did in the Book of Acts.

How do we know if a church is healthy? Should we look at average attendance, the number of conversions, the size of the offerings, or some other metric?

Dr. David K. Bernard looks to the Book of Acts to identify the vital signs of a healthy Apostolic church. His answer provides a New Testament template that pastors and ministry leaders can use to determine how their congregation compares with the early church.

The thief on the cross in Luke 23:32-43 was never baptized, never spoke in tongues, and never joined a church, but Jesus responded to his simple cry of faith by saying, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (verse 43, NKJV). Considering this, should we conclude that a simple prayer of faith is sufficient for salvation?

Dr. David K. Bernard examines this passage in the light of what the rest of Scripture says about salvation. He explains the importance of Peter's command in Acts 2:38 while responding to questions about the fate of those who, like the thief on the cross, face extenuating circumstances.

Oneness Pentecostals believe Jesus was God “manifest in the flesh” (1 Timothy 3:16.) But the New Testament repeatedly refers to Jesus as the “Son of God.” What does this title mean? Does it indicate Jesus was somehow different from God, or less than God? Is Jesus God, or is He God’s Son?

Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this important question with a review of what the Bible says about the identity of Jesus Christ.

Does the New Testament advocate communal living or a form of economic socialism? Those who believe it does point to Acts 2:44-45, where Luke wrote, "Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need" (NKJV). Does this mean Apostolic Pentecostals should abandon modern capitalism and adopt a socialist model?

Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this frequently asked question by exploring what was happening in the Book of Acts and what modern believers can learn from the example of the early Christians.

In Ephesians 5:22, Paul wrote, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” He repeated this command in Colossians 3:18 when he said, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.” In Titus 2:5, he told his ministerial protégé that he should teach younger women to be “obedient to their own husbands.”

Some critics say these verses are proof that Paul was sexist, while others use the apostle's words as cover for abusive behavior. Dr. David K. Bernard explains why both responses are a misrepresentation of the principle Paul was advocating.

Paul’s epistles typically open with a greeting that refers to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Some modern translations, including the New International Version, include the following note after Mark 16:8: “The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.” A similar insertion is found at the end of John 7. It reads, “The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.”

Some critics argue that the Bible is an outdated and barbaric book that condones slavery. They point out that Old Testament patriarchs such as Abraham owned slaves. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul seems to defend the practice, writing in Ephesians 6:5, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear” (NLT). Several New Testament passages describe Jesus as sitting or standing at God’s right hand. One of the most frequently referenced is Acts 7:55, where Stephen looks into heaven as he is being martyred and sees “the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” Taken at face value, this and similar verses seem to indicate a distinction between Jesus and God. How can Jesus, the Son of God, and God the Father be one and the same if Stephen really saw Jesus standing at God’s right hand?

The Old Testament includes various commands that most Bible teachers would say are not applicable to Christians. For example, Leviticus 19:19 says, “Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread.” Most Christians would say these commands do not apply to New Testament believers. However, the same chapter of Leviticus also says, “Do not steal,” “Do not deceive or cheat one another,” and “Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.” Christians believe these teachings do apply to them.

How can Christians determine whether an Old Testament passage is applicable to New Testament believers, or whether it was only in-force for the people living under the Old Testament? Dr. David K. Bernard offers a set of guidelines to help Christians answer this important question.

One criticism occasionally leveled at the United Pentecostal Church International and other church organizations is that, in the view of some, there is no precedent for these entities in the New Testament. The New Testament includes many accounts of Jesus and the apostles confronting and casting out demons. Are demonic spirits still active in the world today? Can a Christian be possessed by a demon?

Dr. David K. Bernard draws on Scripture and his experiences traveling and preaching around the globe to answer these important questions. He shows that, while Satanic forces certainly are at work in the modern world, believers have victory over them through Jesus Christ.

Why is sex between consenting adults any of God's business? That certainly seems to be the prevailing attitude of Western society. This "anything goes" sexual ethic directly contradicts the Scriptures, which clearly teach that God has established boundaries around human sexual expression. But why does God think those boundaries are necessary?

Dr. David K. Bernard explains how both sociology and science support the biblical teaching that sex is permissible only within a marriage relationship between one man and one woman. Dr. Bernard's answer will provide clarity to anyone who has ever asked why God cares what consenting adults do behind closed doors.

Many Apostolic students are currently trying to decide what educational path they will follow. Some may feel a call to ministry, but aren’t quite sure what that ministry is. They also may have academic gifts and interests they would like to pursue, but don't know how to balance education and ministry.

Dr. David K. Bernard answers this frequently-asked question by drawing on his own experiences as a student, teacher, and pastor. He also reviews the educational options and opportunities that are available to today's Apostolic students who want to pursue God's will while developing the gifts He has given them.

In Ephesians 4:11, the apostle Paul lists five ministerial offices: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Most modern churches and Christian organizations recognize pastors, teachers, and even evangelists, but are hesitant to use the labels apostle and prophet. Are these two offices no longer relevant to the operation of the church?

In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard examines each office in the five-fold ministry and explains how these roles function in the modern Apostolic church.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit North America and government officials asked everyone to quarantine, many churches began streaming worship services via the internet. Online services proved to be a great evangelism tool, and many churches continued the practice even after in-person worship resumed. But pastors report that some members have opted to permanently forgo in-person worship in favor of more convenient online services.

Is online church a sufficient replacement for in-person worship? Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this question by explaining why attending a physical church location offers numerous spiritual advantages over worshipping from the comfort of your living room.

This Sunday, Christians around the world will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But while believers rejoice, skeptics scoff. They argue that bodily resurrection from the dead is a physical impossibility and the Gospel accounts of an empty tomb are little more than fairy tales.

Some Christian groups, including the Roman Catholic Church, have accepted as canonical or semi-canonical several Jewish writings dating from about 200 BC to 30 BC (and one from about AD 100). These writings are commonly called the Apocrypha. Fourteen such writings even appeared in the original edition of the King James Version. So why isn't the Apocrypha included in most modern Bibles?

Dr. David K. Bernard offers a brief overview of the Apocrypha and explains why neither the early church nor modern Oneness Pentecostals view these writings as divinely inspired.

Late in 2021, a series of tornadoes swept across the Mid-South region of the United States, killing dozens of people and destroying millions of dollars in property. Almost immediately, some politicians pinned the blame on manmade climate change. This has been a recurring refrain: according to the media and some politicians, climate change is the culprit behind every natural disaster, and immediate action must be taken to avert a global crisis.

Dr. David K. Bernard examines these claims along with what the Bible says about Christian stewardship of the natural world. In doing so, he offers guidance on how Christians can respond to claims of a looming climate disaster.

A debate currently is raging in the United States over the principles of the country's founding. On one side are those who argue that the American system of government was established on Judeo-Christian principles by men who were predominantly Christian, or at least were profoundly influenced by Christianity. Opponents of this view argue that America is fundamentally flawed because it was founded on unjust practices such as slavery and the violent exploitation of indigenous people.

Dr. David K. Bernard offers his thoughts on whether America really is "one nation under God" as the Pledge of Allegiance affirms or a society built on a foundation of oppression and injustice.

Will Christians be caught up into the sky in an event known as the "Rapture"? Does the Bible say when this event will occur? Critics like to point out that the word rapture doesn’t appear anywhere in Scripture. Some argue that the modern idea of the Rapture originated in the 1800s with John Nelson Darby and was made popular by the Scofield Reference Bible.

Dr. David K. Bernard responds to the critics and answers these questions by laying out what the Scriptures say about this world-changing event.

Many scientists say geological findings and other natural phenomena prove the earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The Bible clearly paints a picture of God as a loving Creator and Savior who cares for everyone. At the same time, the Bible also is very adamant that there will be a day of judgement in which God banishes unbelievers to a place of everlasting torment. To many, this seems like a contradiction. How can a supposedly loving God punish people for eternity just because they didn't hold the right set of beliefs?

Dr. David K. Bernard addresses this frequently-asked question by reviewing what the Bible actually says about sin, judgment, justice, punishment, and reward.

Oneness Pentecostals sometimes are accused of preaching salvation by works, particularly because they insist that full salvation includes water baptism. Often the person leveling the charge will cite Ephesians 2:8–9, where Paul wrote, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this accusation and examines what the Bible says about the connection between faith and obedience.

In Matthew 12:31-32, Jesus referred to what has become known as “the unpardonable sin.” He said, “Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men" (NKJV). But what did Jesus really mean? Dr. David K. Bernard examines the context of Jesus' words and explains what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. He offers theological and pastoral guidance to those who are concerned that they may have strayed outside the boundaries of God's grace.

Political involvement can feel like an ethical minefield for Christians. In most elections, no candidate on the ballot fully represents Christian values. The North American church focuses quite a bit of attention on two specific religious holidays — Easter and Christmas. However, some Apostolic believers, including many outside North America, express concern about the pagan origins and overtones of these two holidays, as well as their connection to Catholicism. Consequently, these believers argue that Christians shouldn’t participate in Christmas and Easter celebrations.

Dr. David K. Bernard examines this question in light of the residual influence of paganism on Western culture and Paul's words in Romans 14.

Reformed theology, also known as Calvinism, teaches that God predestined some people to be saved, while others are predestined to be lost. This teaching also has been called “unconditional election,” and it is based in-part on verses such as Romans 8:29, where Paul says God knew in advance those who were “predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,” and Romans 11:5, where Paul refers to “the election of grace.”

Dr. David K. Bernard examines whether the Bible supports this doctrine, and he compares the five points of Calvinism with the teaching of Scripture.

One of the distinctive doctrines of the Oneness Pentecostal movement is baptism in the name of Jesus. Whereas other Christians groups typically baptize converts “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Apostolic Pentecostals baptize exclusively in Jesus' name. Consequently, they sometimes are referred to as the “Jesus’ Name Pentecostals” or even the “Jesus Only” movement.

In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard explains the biblical rationale behind this emphasis on the name of Jesus. He shows how Oneness Pentecostals imitate the example of the apostles by stressing the importance of Jesus' name.

Does God really care about our hair? Apostolic Pentecostals historically have taught that women should not cut their hair, and that men should keep their hair cut short. This teaching is based on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, where the apostle Paul provides instruction on proper conduct in the church.

Is gambling a sin or just harmless entertainment?

In the United States, you can hardly visit a gas station or grocery store without being offered an opportunity to purchase a lottery ticket or engage in some other form of gambling. Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the most popular travel destinations in the country, primarily due to legalized gambling. Local and state governments frequently tout legalized gambling as a viable way to increase revenues. Suffice it to say that gambling is a popular pastime.

Pentecostals historically have opposed gambling, but the Bible never specifically condemns it. Dr. David K. Bernard reviews gambling's underlying assumptions and compares them with the teachings of Scripture to answer the question of whether gambling is an acceptable activity for Christians.

When God gave the Ten Commandments, the fourth command was that His people should “remember the Sabbath” and “keep it holy" (Exodus 20:8). Pentecostals believe firmly in divine healing. This belief is based on Scriptures such as James 5:14–15, which says that, if a person is sick, they should ask the elders of the church to anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, with the expectation that God will work a miracle. In Mark 16:18, Jesus promised believers that they would lay hands on the sick and see them recover.

However, personal experience shows that not everyone who receives prayer or is anointed with oil is healed. Dr. David K. Bernard addresses the question of how to reconcile this reality with what God says in His Word about divine healing.

Those who are attending a secular college or university will be exposed to teachings, beliefs, and practices that directly contradict the Scriptures. Is it possible for students to maintain biblical beliefs and an Apostolic lifestyle in this setting?

In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard shares his personal experiences as a student at both Rice University and the University of Texas, as well as insights gleaned from his days as a pastor. He outlines the steps Christian students can take to maintain their faith in the hostile environment of today's college campus.

Pentecostals believe and teach that speaking in tongues is the initial sign or evidence that a person has received the gift of the Holy Spirit. But does the Bible support this claim? Furthermore, is the baptism of the Holy Spirit a requirement for salvation?

This episode is the continuation of the answer to last week's question. Picking up the story in Acts 10, Dr. David K. Bernard completes his review of what Acts says about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Dr. Bernard explains why everyone who puts their faith in Jesus should expect to receive the Holy Spirit with the accompanying sign of speaking in tongues.

Dr. Bernard covers this subject in greater detail in his book The New Birth, which is available for purchase at PentecostalPublishing.com.

Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, is a professing Christian who has made it clear he will not create custom cakes that express messages which conflict with his religious beliefs. Because of this, Mr. Phillips has been sued, fined, harassed, and publicly reviled. His legal case made it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, where justices ruled in his favor. But despite this victory, Phillips has continued to face legal action for exercising his religious liberties.

How should believers in the United States respond to this and other threats against religious liberty? What can we do to help protect and preserve the religious freedoms outlined in our founding documents? Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question while sharing what he and other Apostolic leaders are doing to aid in the fight for the free exercise of religion.

Is giving ten percent of our income to God (also known as "tithing") an Old Testament ordinance or a New Testament obligation?

God challenged the people of Israel through the prophet Malachi to pay their tithes, with the promise that, if they did, He would bless them (Malachi 3:8-12). But are New Testament believers obligated to fulfill this Old Testament command? Are those who teach that New Testament believers should tithe living under the Law and not under grace? What does the Bible actually say about how much Christians should give?

Dr. Bernard answers this question while reviewing what the Bible has to say about giving.

In describing the baptism of Jesus, Matthew wrote, “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased'" (Matthew 3:16-17, NKJV).

Some have pointed to this passage and the other Gospel accounts of the baptism of Jesus as proof that the Godhead is comprised of three separate persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard  refutes this interpretation and shows how these passages confirm a Oneness Pentecostal view of Jesus Christ as God manifested in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16).

In Revelation 13:16–18, the apostle John describes a vision of a prophetic event that has come to be known as the “mark of the Beast.” John wrote that, unless a person receives this mark, they will be unable to transact business. Over the centuries, scholars have debated what this mark might be and how it could be implemented. Recently, some have speculated that perhaps the COVID-19 vaccine might be the mark,  or at least a precursor to its arrival.

In this episode, Dr. Bernard reviews what the Bible says about the Beast and his evil agenda. He also discusses whether it is biblically acceptable for Christians to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, and how technological developments could help usher in the reign of the Antichrist.

What happens to us when we die? Since death is a reality for everyone, it is a question all of us should consider.

The Bible has much to say about what happens when we die. In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus told a story of a rich man and a poor beggar in which He indicated that, after death, the rich man was in hell while the beggar, Lazarus, was in a place of peace and rest. In 2 Corinthians 5:8, Paul stated that, for Christians, “to be absent from the body" is "to be present with the Lord.” However, in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17, Paul wrote that dead believers are in a state of sleep, but they will be resurrected when Jesus returns.

So what exactly happens when we die? Dr. Bernard explains how these and other Bible passages reveal the nature of life after death.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “It is appalling that the most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o'clock on Sunday morning." If Christians, including Oneness Pentecostals, share a common set of beliefs, why are so many churches and religious organizations split along racial lines? Dr. David K. Bernard answers this critical question while exploring the interracial roots of Oneness Pentecostalism and explaining why we must recapture the racial unity of those early years.

In 1 Corinthians 12:30, the apostle Paul asked, "Do all speak with tongues?" Pentecostals teach that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Does this belief contradict Paul's teachings? Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question and explores the difference between the gift of tongues and tongues as the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
