Dr. Veirdre Jackson

Living Strong: The Flip Side of Adversity brings powerful stories and fearless conversations from experts in the field of business, relationships, emotional, physical and mental health, and faith-based communities together to give practical insight on how there is always a flip side to every story. Each episode creates a brave space that combines proven lessons from neuroscience, powerful tools from authentic connection, key principles from life lessons, and practical promises from faith-based insights. Trauma, toxic stress, broken habits and hurting hearts don’t define destiny, but peace isn’t passive. It requires an exchange. To create a flip and access peace in the middle of the pieces, you are challenged to make an exchange of the lies that have kept you mentally hostage in basement moments for a Steps of Growth framework, which cultivates a shift toward growth planning and forward movement.

Have you heard yourself ask...

"What if I’m not good enough?”

"What if people don’t take me seriously?”

"Do I even have anything valuable to say?”

"Is it selfish to speak up for myself?”

But you have a yearning inside that says… It’s time to speak up, stand up, use your voice… Let’s Talk about it!

Many people ask me, “How did you become a speaker? Where did you start? How do you use your voice on so many platforms?” My answer: because I am healed. For almost 20 years, I’ve been on a healing journey—walking through forgiveness, reclaiming my God-given identity, trading the lies about my value for the truth about my worth, and adopting daily practices that keep my healing in front of me, not as a check mark behind me.

Would you believe there was a season when every time I opened my mouth, my voice quaked and my hands shook? NOW, I use my voice with purpose and intention as a transformative tool for myself and others. Join me as I talk about the tools for the FLIP.

Dr. Larry L. Anderson Jr. returns to the publishing scene along with Co-Author, Christine O. James, with the 2nd installment from “The Diaries Series” with the highly anticipated release of “The Pastors’ Wives’ Diaries” (published by SMS Press).

This diaries entry offers a visible journal of the invisible journey of the women who have been called to be pastor’s wives and the personal challenges they encounter throughout their lives. It also contains the passionate and transparent testimonies of Pastor Anderson, as he bares his soul naked, like never before, on the blind spots he and other pastors may have when it comes to effectively covering their wives.

Written to affirm pastors’ wives, encourage pastors, and educate the faith-based community, this book is filled with real-life confessions and testimonies from diverse voices and faith-based leaders, many of which have never been shared with the public. It details their unscripted transparent trials and triumphs of being a pastor’s wife, including their jilted, jealousy, Judas, judgment, Jezebel, and joy experiences, while serving in ministry. Unlike other books written by or for pastors’ wives that encourage them to be more spiritual or faithful, this book reveals the true scars associated with the call and some heartfelt Scripture, prayer, and encouragement for healing. Christine O. James and Anderson form a dynamic tag-team tandem to love on pastors’ wives and help articulate and illuminate how their pain has been for human purpose and God’s glory.

We all have heard the saying that ‘Hurt People, Hurt People’ but what happens when those hurt people are our leaders, our encouragers and our pastors? How do those who have been wounded the most by the church, make sure they don’t in turn hurt the church? Pastors’ deal with a high level of pressure to perform and behave perfectly as they have been placed on a pedestal. The pastor must be healthy in order to lead a healthy church. Understanding the unrealistic demands that pastors are to be perfect, is what keeps them from being transparent, authentic and able to get the help they made need themselves. Pastors must embrace humility, seek grace and learn to forgive themselves as well as those they have been called to shepherd. The Pastors’ Diaries gives us a transparent look behind the pulpit into the lives of those who have been called to pastor and their personal challenges that could lead to tragedy if left unattended.

One of the biggest lessons T.W. Suggs has learned has been that there is a correlation between forgiveness, healing, and worthiness. When we fail to forgive, we’re tethered to painful stories and memories which prevent us from growing and learning how amazing we really are. The absolute biggest lesson T.W. learned in his journey is that surrogates are not allowed. That is, you can’t have someone birth something for you (healing, a sense of worthiness, etc.). You are meant to give life to yourself. Join us as we explore the connection between trauma and worthiness and how we can heal from our traumatic experiences while “While Running Through The Rain”. T.W. Suggs’ latest book, 'Running Through The Rain' examines serious issues of forgiveness, identity, rejection, and the unseen trauma black men and boys encounter but seldom express. This Flip Side Conversation will examine real issues that also remind us of the importance of opening our hearts to the little moments that make us smile, that exist around us all.

Back to back tragedies, created a path that I never wanted to travel. I lost my entire home in 2019. We were displaced for over a year. In 2020 January I lost my mother after a long bought of various illnesses. In October 2020, my husband was in a tragic and fatal motorcycle accident with traumatic brain injury. He never awoke. I brought him home after a long day in the hospital under hospice where I cared for him until he passed in January 2021. We were married for 32 years. My original first love was taken from me on a normal day like so many others. Discovering how I could find gratitude within devastating grief has allowed me to live a life that is full, has happiness, and purpose. Gratitude and happiness absolutely can live together. Becoming a Disruptive Peacemaker has been a long time journey of mine. The interesting part of the Journey is that I didn’t realize how important it was to heal from the past, to help heal the future. As an educator, I have seen trauma, conflict and quick fixes really impact the world of education, supporting teachers and holding space to develop children and communities. Through art, my path has me focused on bringing new life to recycled material. This is reflective of my story, once adopted as infant, coming home to my Native tribe after 45 years of disconnect has my heart and soul feeling repurposed in so many ways. My desire to bring art as a catalyst for healing has also formed as a method of peaceful disruption.Activism in 2024 looks very different than what it did at the heels of George Floyd’s Murder. In those days, I was marching, posting and writing angrily at a system that had no chance of changing, because most individuals did not know that systematic racism was very active and alive today. Now, four years later, I follow the playbook of my heroes, Bob Marley, Audre Lorde, Dr. Angelou, bell Hooks, MLK Jr. Malcom X, They each were messengers of words that the world needed to hear, but they chose pathways of art, peace, nature and beauty to take up space as a form of resistance. My hope is that I can bring others in the community to peaceful, artistic pause with purpose. Say what you mean, in a way that matters, and creates pause for reflection rather than violence.

Rick Warren has a quote, “We are the product of our past but we don’t have to be a prisoner to it.” Regardless of what has happened to us we don’t have to be shackled to it and allow it to define us. But let’s be honest life can be overwhelming; and even when we are confident and competent in our abilities and skills to achieve success with joy and gratitude, we can still attest to the reality that sometimes, life still gets hard. And if we don’t stay alert to what we believe to be true, we can become chained to lies, tricks, and skeems designed to distort our value and worth in the middle of our story- sabotaging the potential for our ending. Letting go of our chains (thoughts/hurts/ lies/ narratives) is essential to becoming everything God has called us to be. Sometimes, letting go is difficult because we don’t physically see the chains, so we deny them or ignore them because they are too difficult to acknowledge or confront. In the title for our show Zohnette Sligh shares an expression “who I choose to be”...choice denotes that there are alternatives for our paths. Join us for a conversation of how creativity, adventure and vulnerability can unlock chains and open doorways to purpose and true identity.

As professionals and entrepreneurs, life is radically busy. There’s too much to do and never enough time, money, or energy. Our natural tendency is to dig in and do MORE…• More work• More time• More energywhich is inevitably followed by more discouragement at the end of each day when the to-do list is longer than when the day started. We worry about the work, then try to work away the worry. What if there was one thing that changed everything? The beautiful truth is that God cares about our joy and fulfillment even more than we do. He’s radically invested in our professional lives, and He wants to fill us with His Spirit to guide and provide for us every step of the way. With God as our partner, we can navigate the twists and turns of life with confidence, knowing that lasting joy and success really can be ours.

Coach Janet believes that the challenges of our past and the present necessities of life can keep us in survival mode. So, we have to be intentional about moving past surviving into thriving. She picked up messages about her value and worth that made it difficult for us to accept herself as she is. As a survivor of childhood trauma, including abandonment, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse and assault, the message she internalized from that early developmental trauma was that it was not okay to be herself because she was “unacceptable” and “bad.” The overwhelming inner-critic that developed produced unrealistic self-expectations, false responsibility, and overwork. That same inner-critic convinced her to hide herself. Since it took most of her mental, emotional, and physical energy just to get through each day, she didn’t have much energy left to focus on who she really was and how to bring more of herself to her everyday life, interactions, and experiences. She was in survival mode.But... To Coach Janet, thriving means being WHO God created us to be and letting everything else flow out of that. That is living in Overflow.

As we are ending 2023, many of us plan for the new year, new me. We look forward to setting new goals, dreams, aspirations and even new focal point. We hope to wipe our plate clean of all the draining, hard stressors that has caused us pain. To look forward to something new is not a bad thing, but have we considered looking at the stressors not as something to toss or forget but to help us look at what areas in our heart and life do we need to realign and refocus to build a healthy foundation to alleviate the stress. Many times, we can be the source of our stress by carrying unnecessary burdens or attempting to control something that is out of our control or just wasn’t for us to fix. By us not acknowledging it or calling it out, we attempt to make a new foundation over shaky ground. Let’s discuss what it means to face the root of stress to create a firm ground to flourish and thrive in and on a new foundation into the new year. “Therapy is more about building new associations, making new, healthier default pathways. It is almost as if therapy is taking your two-lane dirt road and building a four-lane freeway alongside it. The old road stays, but you don’t use it much anymore. Therapy is building a better alternative, a new default. And that takes repetition, and time, honestly, it works best if someone understands how the brain changes. This is why understanding how trauma impacts our health is essential for everyone.” ~ Dr. Bruce Perry

We all crave connection and belonging. Our conversation will focus on how intentionally prioritizing connection creates an atmosphere of belonging for the staff we partner with and the families we serve. When our programs were afforded the opportunity for coaching from a trauma-informed lens, we understood this must also include the program leadership. We highly value the idea of professional and personal growth, and we realize that we must be willing to be vulnerable to the growth process in order to partner with our staff to grow in their own ways. In turn, our home visitors partner with families in this same growth process, so one of the core concepts we have embraced is that our work is a parallel process. We value the relationships we have with each other and with each individual staff member. We imbed strategies into our work to ensure there is space for relationship building. We utilize reflective supervision on a consistent basis to make every effort for each person to feel seen, heard and valued. Reflective supervision is a concrete example of where we listen with the intention of hearing that person’s perspective, and we actively listen for opportunities for affirmation. Apart from individual relationships, we work to create a culture of community care, a place where all staff members feel safe and open to exploring change in the way we do our work. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be part of this work with the groups of people we are privileged to work with, and we have learned to focus not as much on what we do, but how we do it. We know it is who we are as people that makes the difference to all of our relationships, both in work environments and outside of work.

We all have heard the saying that ‘Hurt People, Hurt People’ but what happens when thosehurt people are our leaders, our encouragers and our pastors?

The relationship between supporter/ provider and the family is a powerful one and a connection that impacts both provider and parent. As humans, we bring deeply engrained approaches to how we relate, connect, posture, and listen to each other. The art and science of supporting families seeking care, insight, and sometimes a “lifeline” is to point them back to their strengths, resources, alliances, and the solutions they already hold within their own power. If we are honest, we all (family and provider alike) can lose sight of our power, our plans for the future, and hope for tomorrow. Let’s talk about the parallel process of self awareness, regulation, and growth for both partners in this thing called “life”.

For mothers living in poverty, especially generational poverty, saying yes to a pregnancy is only the beginning of the journey. These women lack resources, support, finances, and hope. While pregnancy centers succeed in providing aid during pregnancy, impoverished mothers are left to fight a solitary battle for the life of their child every day after birth. Marisol Maldonado Rodriguez calls for a movement to make a lasting change in the lives of women experiencing generational poverty, poor maternal care, life changing choices, and devastating demands. She argues that this requires broadening perspectives and learning about poverty in order to address the root of the problem of the struggle Beyond Her Yes.

The world is full to the brim with passionate people! What would happen if those same passionate people transformed their passions into action? Our schools would be better! Our communities would be safer! Our relationships would be healthier! How do we get there?

Dr. Stephanie Brown has three passions that electrify her life… faith, education, and writing. During the Pandemic Lockdown of 2020, God transformed her passions into action to address the lack of representation of characters of color in children’s literature and in curriculum. In fact, a survey of 3,716 books surveyed in 2019 indicated that only 11.9% had main characters that were African American. Animal character ranked at over 20% (Herndon, 2020). So, to transform her impact on education, her community, and the minds of children, she wrote and published a children’s book in 2021 called, “She Looks Like Me!”, where the main character is a spunky and curious little African American girl named Elena. The purpose of the book is to teach children about hidden figures in Black History and provide parents and educators with recommendations on how to promote diversity in children’s book at home and in the classroom.

The impact of, “She Looks Like Me!” has been tremendous! The book has been read aloud in classrooms all over Philadelphia, bought by educators nationwide and the support keeps growing! Dr. Brown has also created an educational resource hub called I AM Educational Series that provides free lesson plans for teachers and parents in Black History and in Women’s History. And… On MLK Day 2022, a second book, “She Looks Like Me!: The Activity Book”, will be released to give kids an opportunity to reinforce their knowledge of hidden figures in Black History through building fine motor skills, word searches, matching, coloring and more! The Activity Book also comes with a lesson plan.

We are celebrating our 50th Episode with Grammy Award Winning Producer and Flipside of Adversity Engineer, Keith Pelzer.

Sometimes new tasks can become the most important part of our lives. But we have to take the risk first, in order to achieve new things. In March of 2020, Living Strong Consulting had to create a huge pivot in order to survive and; often, choosing the person to bring your vulnerable ideas to can catapult or crush your confidence to succeed. We have had success beyond anything I could have imagined over the last two years, and people often ask … How do you keep growing against rollercoaster odds?

Well… “The reward is in the risk. No one ever ascended a mountain without risk.” There have been three key components to our climb during the pandemic: Faith, Friendship, and Flipside stories. And the first step was connecting with a like-minded partner in crime willing to climb, dream, and create right along side of my adventure. Pastor, Producer, and Creative Keith Pelzer has been that person. It all started with a “YES” and possibility grew from there.

What are you hesitating to say yes to because you can not be certain of the outcome?

How are you allowing growth to remain on pause because you are afraid of risk?

Are you playing safe and sabotaging your plan?

Log into my conversation with the thought partner behind our radical shift, innovative changes, and traction for growth. We will share strategies, mindset, and technical tips to continuing to innovate in a season of change. We are not looking to bounce back to anything. Our bounce is forward with a momentum of an up and down climb with risks and learned lessons at each twist and turn. But we are not turning back. Join us on 4/28 @5pm EST for a lot of laughs and practical tips for your Flip!

“It's possible for anyone to overcome their challenges and it's never too late to live purposefully. My family and I survived civil war; that's shaped the way that I do life professionally and personally. Whether you started out with a great start, or you come from humble beginnings, everyone has a story to tell. Once I discovered what God was calling me to do in my community, it's shaped the businesses I've launched, the relationships I invest in, and how I position myself to know what He wants me to do next.”

Originally from Freetown, Sierra Leone, Andrena Sawyer and her family moved to the United States when she was nine years old due to a civil war that left thousands dead and untold numbers maimed and displaced. She now credits her family's move during the war for her interest in human triumph and perseverance. She has since actively worked to mobilize and empower others.

She is the President of P.E.R.K. Consulting, an advisory firm for small to mid-sized nonprofits and businesses, and the Founder of the Minority Christian Women Entrepreneurs Network. For years I found myself on under a great deal of anxiety and stress which manifested in health issues such as fatigue, insomnia, weight gain and chronic asthma. The culprit? People pleasing!

From the time I was a young girl, I sought the approval of everyone around me and worked tirelessly to keep the peace. This long-engrained behavior finally came to a head as I was turning fifty and looked at my life: married to a man with bipolar disorder; overwhelm as a caregiver and “married” single parent; struggling to leave the church of my childhood and fully embrace my God-given purpose.

Through a decade-long study of the Word of God, I learned my true identity: one that is centered in pleasing God; not people. I learned how to trust myself, which resulted in an uncanny ability to trust others. I found the voice I had polished professionally and learned to speak out personally, where it mattered most: in parenting and in my personal relationships. The guilt that was engrained in me from childhood on lost its grip and I am able to live free!

There is always a tipping point. For me it came as I battled the questions that arise when a loved one attempts suicide; then there was a divorce and finally a re-building of my life. Ironically, the re-buildig came quickly once I had stopped people pleasing, found my voice and began walking in a Christ-centered confidence.

My story is no different than thousands of other women who remain in the grip of people pleasing. There is a way out and I can’t wait to talk about it!!

Fear was something that took over my life for many years. I was afraid of everything. Afraid of failure, afraid of what people thought of me, afraid of success, afraid of being seen, afraid of messing things up, and afraid of being what God has called me to be, just to name a few. It dictated everything in my life. When I looked up and saw that I was moving but standing still, I knew it was time to overcome it. Fear had crept up on me without my permission. Today I stand ready and willing to face the fear that has tried to control my life. I once heard someone say, the only way to overcome fear is to do whatever it is that you are afraid of. I’m so excited to share that in this season of my life, I am doing everything that fear told me I couldn’t do.

The bodegas were processed and unhealthy prepared foods are sold flourish in low-income communities. Almost 250,000 people in Philly lack access to nutritious food to live a healthy life. Food insecurity is more complex than being physically hungry. Access to nutritious food impacts mental health, brain development, and physical and financial well-being. The city of Philadelphia is plagued with food-insecure families that work 40+ hours per week and still don't have access to chemical-free food options. The process and journey to purpose and promise is different for everyone, and it’s easy to get distracted by someone else’s success when you feel like your success is long overdue. If you’re not careful, your frustration can turn bitterness, making you critical, cynical even and further delay your success.

Using her 30 years of experience as a nurse, nurse educator, and entrepreneur, Shannon Jackson, The People’s Nurse, has the mission to motivate, educate, and inspire others to live their lives without limits. Join us as we explore the importance of health in marginalized communities and the power individuals have to take control of their health.

We hear the terms health and wellness frequently and they are often utilized interchangeably, yet the implications are marginally unique from one another.

Health can be characterized as a condition of our physical being, regardless of whether positive or negative. Our condition of health relies upon different variables like heredity, natural condition, societal access, selections of food sources and beverages, wellness and activities, sleep and rest, contemplations, and our passionate perspective.

On the contrary, wellness is characterized as the general cycle of keeping an overall condition of good wellbeing. It involves the cognizant choice and empowerment of the individual that is required to cultivate wellness, while health essentially implies an individual’s condition.

Shannon Jackson will unpack the choices and conditions between the two and share nuggets from her weekly podcast that describes real-world situations and provides actionable advice to help listeners live better lives.

Her combination of general life coaching and from-the-heart inspiration will give us health tools for “Living Your Life Without Limits”. Her Flip Side Conversation will educate, empower, and advocate for equity so that every listener can integrate every day approaches to prepare us for any difficulties that we may face and in order to break through or jump over any barriers that get in our way.

I've taken my pain and turned it into a big part of my purpose. Learning I was a sickle cell trait carrier came out from the shadows. Honestly, I had never heard the term before. The more I inquired, it felt like something people wanted me to whisper about behind closed doors. However, I refused to whisper. Instead, whenever I receive the chance to discuss sickle cell trait I speak freely about it, and I happily welcome conversations about sickle cell disease.

Advocacy gave me the power I needed to feel like I could play a part in re-writing history. And take the present moment, future, and hopes into my own hands. Advocacy feels like a gift that I can present my daughter with in the future. Then let her know that I've done everything I can to better her life as a sickle cell patient. As a result, I write sickle cell children's books to help parents explain this complex disease to their children, family members, and friends so others will better understand sickle cell and how it impacts families as a whole.

No strategy Copying others Pretending to people please….

Most entrepreneurs need to believe in themselves more. Specifically, showing up how they “think” they should show up leaves them tired and burnt out in their business. If they show up to what is actually true to them and not the mind gremlins, they will not only have ease in their business but they will fulfill what they set out to accomplish.

Now is the time to be you. There is a DEMAND for authenticity for the businesses that people shop from during a time when people are looking for truth, real help, and needed value. Navigating what that looks like is actually one of the hardest things in business. Showing up as YOU with the discernment to distinguish fear from this it not for you is key.

Many of us remember this childhood saying, Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Thinking back on broken relationships, painful interactions, and hurt, some of us would have preferred the sticks and stones. Unfortunately, this childhood mantra was inaccurate; if we are honest - words hurt. The way we use words has a profound effect on our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Careless words rob us of our joy, peace, and creativity.

LaVonne Weaver’s passion for art and writing became an outlet in overcoming the invisible wounds not visible for bandaids but still needed dressing. Art became a safe space for her and helped her begin healing in hidden places. Journaling and quiet time became part of her daily self-care routine. Art became her therapy, every evening she made affirmation/scripture collages, word clouds, and inspirational infographics, and posted them in her environment. She surrounded herself with words that mattered.

Now, as a self-care specialist, La Vonne combines her love of teaching and creativity to work alongside compassionate professionals like educators, caregivers, and social service providers. By providing resources, compassionate strategies, workshops, and safe spaces, La Vonne supports women in establishing a sense of self-care from the inside and out. Her company, Liv Vibrantly, tells a story about how challenges can become works of art. Life is a classroom, and our experiences fit together to create beautiful masterpieces. “Self-care is an invitation to love who we are now and embrace who we becoming with compassion.”

I started running in July 2013. I knew I needed some consistency in my exercise regimen to combat the weight I was gaining. Since that time, My WHY has continually evolved. I met a member of Black Girls Run (BGR) at a wedding on a Sunday and committed to a meet up on that Monday with no intentions of attending again. There were so many barriers in my mind. The voice in my head said, they meet too early, I don’t know anyone, running is going to kill my knees and what in the world am I going to do with my hair? Who knew how my YES to running would open up a world of adventure and opportunity. Nine years later, I am a marathoner, a swimmer and a cyclist. I arrived here not by talent. Each accomplishment has taken discipline, determination and accountability. This trifecta has helped me to develop some BE attitudes to conquer my fears and accomplish success on and off the asphalt.

With a professional career spanning over 25 years, I’ve taken a special interest in educating people about finances and wealth creation. In 2020, I launched Dimiprinciples LLC- Wisdom is the principal thing. Get wisdom but in all your getting, get understanding. With this platform, I’ve created intimate spaces for women to have candid conversations about finances. Based upon my experience in the finance industry, I’ve learned that too many women are struggling in silence concerning finances while giving the appearance of having it all together. I provide women with the tools needed to shift their money mindset and gain financial freedom. I show women that with discipline, determination and accountability they can go from doing ordinary things to accomplishing extraordinary things.

This flip side conversation will challenge us to be intentional and not miss these moments. But, the task ahead of you is never greater than the strength within you. Which old habit do you need to replace with a new habit to live fully and free from the inside out and with a high quality of life. It's not just about the quantity of years... but the quality we place in those years.

God’s interruptions are often invitations to something more significant. Don’t miss out on the blessing of participating in God’s plan because it doesn’t look like what you planned.

Sooooo, last night with 30 seconds to go I had to decide “Do I take the easy out and cancel or Do I step into an interruption and test out what God has put in me for such a time as this.”

I chose to step - terrified but determined. Why would you do something so scary????? Because I NEVER want to walk away from a moment saying, “What if”?

Life threw me curve ball and the Girlfriend Gathering Crew said “Batter Up!” and we hit a home run!!!

What does the word survive actually mean? We can use it so freely, a form of exaggerative humor, such as surviving a long meeting or “I survived” after a difficult exam or even a hot summer day.

Yet to someone who moves from a place of having been victimized, to claim the term survivor is significant and honorable—this word holds much meaning and heavy weight. The definition of survive is to continue to live or exist, especially in spite of danger or hardship. A survivor is a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which others have died.

If we stop and think about what we have survived, I imagine we would have many stories of different forms of survivorship. I am a survivor of a near death experience. I am a survivor of cancer. I am a survivor of domestic abuse. I am a survivor of a stroke. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I am a survivor of sex trafficking.

In this show segment we will explore the idea of surviving out loud and what it looks like to live beyond a hardship loudly enough to be heard.

Dr. Heather Evans will share about some of her work with survivors in the USA and beyond from survivors of human sex trafficking and other forms of trauma, to survivors of genocide in the country of Rwanda. Through data from a research study of sex trafficking survivors, we will explore themes of post traumatic growth and evidences of how survivors from horrific, unspeakable forms of trauma can grow beyond survival.
