Greater Movement is something that we should all be striving for. My guest this week Amanda Gullo was introduced to physical therapy and stretching at a very young age due to a car accident and has now built a business around improving mobility and wellness for others thru proper stretching and training. In this episode we find out how she got her start in the industry and some of the options that are available at her wellness center. Amanda gives us some pre and post ride stretch ideas. I know as I continue to get older, I find myself doing more stretching in general and it has significantly helped me both on and off the bike. Give this one a listen and if you are in the Bay Area maybe stop by her studio for a session.

It's hard to believe we have put out 200 episodes of the Cycle Jerks Podcast. Looking back when we started this thing I had no idea how long or even what it may become. It's been a great ride and hopefully we've got another 200 more in the making. It was great getting Dave and Chris back in today to discuss some of our more memorable moments that we have shared over the past year or so. Of course, we also derailed a bit and went on a few tangents. Good times and thank you all so much for all of your support of the podcast. We've got an ever-growing community and want to keep bringing you content you enjoy. If you would like to support what we do beyond listening, we do have an additional option at cyclejerkspodcast@buzzsprout.com and click on the support tab in the upper right for options. Any and all contributions are very much appreciated.

Jessica and her husband Joel are a power couple when it comes to Ultra Cycling. They both ride epic Ultra events together and in some instances separately. This is somewhat unusual in the Ultra space as we discussed on the podcast. Many couples have one athlete while the spouse will take on the support role. Jessica and Joel just returned from the 24 hours in the Canyon Race at Palo Duro Canyon near Armadillo Texas. This is a pretty unique event as it offers both road and off road options. Jessica opted for the off road as that is her first option and Joel went for the road race. They both had exceptional efforts with Jessica getting the overall win and setting a new course record time for women and Joel with a first place finish in his category a strong 6th place overall. You can get the full details of this race as well as past and future events by visiting their blogspot site. @nankmancycling.blogspot.com

Kevin is someone that I have been trying to get on for some time. He grew up working at the retailer Bike N Hike in Albany. He eventually became a manager and then a part owner at the tender age of 25. He later went on to open more locations and when he decided to shut it down he owned 4 Bike N Hike locations outright and even some real estate. Tough local market conditions forced the closure of the business in 2016. This as you might imagine was a very tough decision. The reason I wanted to get Kevin on is because of his business acumen. He was a mentor to many over the years with his detailed approach to business. Even in retirement he is still assisting retailers. Kevin is one of the many great people in this industry. I hope you enjoy his journey as much as I did. My apologies, about mid way into this I had some technical difficulties with my mic but quickly got it resolved.

We touch on some of his career highlights, his life growing up in the bike business and ultimate ownership of Sunflower Outdoor and Bike shop, as well as his fitting wedding proposal to his wife Paulina. Whether you are a seasoned gravel enthusiast or just starting out, Dan's expertise and enthusiasm will leave you inspired to hit the trails and maybe take on a big challenge. With my first Unbound experience coming up next week I thought it would be fitting to have Dan join me and share some of his insights. You may have noticed that I have been flyin solo for these past couple of episodes and there is a good reason for that. My co-host took a job with Trek Bicycle managing a store and the position requires his full attention. Chris is a longtime friend of mine and I really appreciated having him as my co-host, that said I totally understand trying to manage a demanding new position and still keep some balance in your life. Chris and I are still good friends and I'm sure he will have great success running the store. Trek is definitely lucky to have him as well as my previous co-host Dave Dalton. It seems like Trek might have it out for me LOL.. The second half of this short episode is a story of something I would say is pretty crazy that happened to me and I lived to tell about it.. Hope you enjoy and would love to hear any of your experiences? Please feel free to provide feedback anytime we/I do something you like and something you don't like. I appreciate you all for listening and supporting the podcast. Feel free to subscribe if you are so inclined.

I was fortunate enough to meet Bill early in my career at GT Bicycles and he had a big impact on me in those early years. Bill is semi-retired currently after many great years in the industry. He started his career at Bell Helmets and was involved in the Bell V1-Pro development and sales programs. Anyone else have one of those hideous buckets back in the day, Sorry Bill :) He moved from Bell to GT Bicycles and that is where we met. Bill was in charge of helmets and soft goods at GT and generally keeping things together after the untimely death of GT/Riteway founder Richard Long. Bill shares the story of the day Richard passed and how that impacted him and everyone at GT, Richard was a one-of-a-kind leader and everyone working for GT wanted to make him proud. RIP. Bill later moved on to work for Park Toll on Minnesota for 9 years and has nothing but fond memories of his time there. He now calls San Diego home and spends much of his time coaching Girls Softball something he has done for many years and is one of the absolute best at it but he is too humble to brag about it. Don't worry we don't talk baseball in this episode. Hope you enjoy. Please note we hit some technical difficulties towards the end of the podcast so it gets a little choppy but worth sticking it out. Jose's passion is mountain biking but the shop has a good selection of all types of bikes. Jose is quite a character and someone that truly loves the daily interaction with his clientele and it comes thru in every interaction. Oh boy did I blow the introduction on this one! I totally spaced out and didn't acknowledge Chris and just went into some script that I had wrote out prior to the podcast, another thing I never do. I was nervous as Rick and the Sea Otter Classic have been a huge part of my career in the bike industry and just very excited to get him on the podcast. Anyway after a rocky start we really got into a great conversation with Rick. He has accomplished so much in his career in the bike industry and it was great hearing some of his stories. From working with Rock Shox and Keith Bontrager in the early days to co founding The Sea Otter Classic and so much more Rick is very accomplished in many facets of the industry. He has done consulting for many top brands and now finds himself as the director of marketing at Enduro Bearings. I know you have heard this before but you dont want to miss this one.

Like so many of us, bikes became our passion at a very young age. As a kid it is your first experience of freedom. The wind in your face and your only limits were how far your body could propel you. For an older generation, it was when the street lights came on. In the 1990's mountain bikes exploded into the mainstream. Bike manufactures small and large were only held back by their imagination. For a young Laurent Freiden living in Luxembourg, it was a 1993 Mountain Bike World Cup event in Houffalize Belgium that would ignite a passion that would still be alive today. That day inspired years of mountain bike racing around the world and with a natural ability with mechanics, Laurent is still living the dream of that era today. Cycle Jerks had the pleasure of sitting down with Laurent in his new home town of Nevada City to chat about this Golden Era of mountain bikes and his passion for finding and assembling race rigs from the mid 90's. Laurent was even bidding on a race worn skin suit on Ebay while we were chatting. Cycle Jerks got to hear cool stories about Laurent swapping wheels with Joe Breeze so they could both have original period correct bike parts. Today this passion has created his event called Velo Cosmos. This fantastic event showcases bikes of all kinds from different era's. So sit back and listen to Laurents journey through an amazing era of bikes!

BMX has been very good to Ezequiel. Growing up in a small mountain town in Argentina Ezequiel was first exposed to BMX thru the video games Dave Mirra and Matt Hoffman, from there he connected with a couple of locals and the rest is history as the saying goes. Eze style and skills on the bike are undeniable but his humble, nurturing character is what struck me in this interview. He is the founder of the brand One Place World, they make hammocks and lifestyle apparel, including a line featuring bamboo fabric that sounds amazing. Be sure to check out the riding of Eze on Instagram and you tube and if you are looking for some fresh gear check out the One Place World website.

Boy this was a fun one! Matt has been in the industry a long tme and with a very colorful history working in product development with great brands like Gary Fisher, White Industries, Bianchi. Ultimately leading to him co founding Enduro bearings with a friend from high school. Enduro makes all types of bearing for bicycle applications, and they have something truly unique in their XD15 ceramic bearing. We do nerd out on bearings a little bit in this episode but hey us bike nerds tend to do that sometimes. Hope you enjoy this one and if you are someone who keeps your bikes for a long time or you want the absolute best in a bearing check out the XD15. Enduro also offers grease options and a bearing press and removal tools for the DIY'er.

We said farewell to Dave last week and this week we introduce his replacement, Chris Padavana. Chris and I have known each other and worked together for almost 30 years! Friends of the show will recognize that name as he has been on the podcast before when he was the owner of Eden Bicycles. In this episode we learn where he grew up and what his childhood was like, and his family history. How he ultimately made his way into the bike business. It's going to be a lot of fun having Chris as the Co Host and we will kick things off next week with our first guest. Thank you all for your support of the podcast.

Being raised with a golf instructor father one might have thought his future was preordained. But at the age of 10 a longtime family friend brought him down to a local bike shop. Seeing all those bikes was life altering and since that day the wheels haven't stopped turning. He started out riding mountain bikes and quickly turned cyclocross. During our chat Cody talks about his rise to the top of the ranks, traveling the globe as a member of team USA, competing at the World Championships and winning a National Title along with numerous national caliber events. We also chatted about him forming his own team with partner Lange Twins Family Winery, the decline of the cyclocross scene, running a family bike shop Kinetic Cycles, racing gravel and his new love of running.

We first chatted with Anna when, after just two years of taking up riding, she was racing at the pro level throughout the US and Europe. 1 year later, a horrible crash at this year's Redlands and the folding of her Team inspired her to re-think her racing future. Now racing as a "privateer" she's competing on road and off in the Life Time Grand Prix Series. Remarkably, just a few months after the Redland's crash she raced Unbound and won the Blue Course at SBT. It's a conversation filled with inspiration, lessons learned and perspective.

This was a big one for Mike and he was downright giddy to have the man who inspired him to get into Freestyle BMX on the Pod. From his humble beginnings jumping garbage cans in his neighborhood to becoming a 5 time winner of the AFA King of Skateparks Competitions, Eddie Fiola became one of the most famous and highly paid freestyle BMX riders of his time. Proving BMXers aren't dropouts Eddie has parlayed his talents into a career as a Hollywood Stuntman being featured in numerous TV Commercials and credits that include the Dukes of Hazard, The Italian Job, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Sons of Anarchy to name just a few. Eddie shared his stoke of BMX and it was a great chat with a great guy and a true legend.

Wow what a journey! Todd grew up in NorCal where he began racing BMX before moving to SoCal to join SE Racing at just 19 years old. After a stint working at SE Bike he went on to head marketing at GT Bicycles. In a unique turn he left the bike industry to become a documentary filmmaker / TV Producer where he created among others the Motocross Files and Penton about the legendary John Penton, an American professional motorcycle racer and entrepreneur who developed an enduro motorcycle brand that bears name. But BMX has always been in his blood so he resurrected the Frogtown Classic, an annual Vintage BMX Race/ Reunion happening this year September 6-8th. It's a family event and experience you won't want to miss as is our chat with Todd

6 months after being struck by a car Derek Teel of Dialed Health returns to the pod to share his journey back from near life ending injuries to his goal of Everesting in the Swiss Alps. It’s an extraordinary comeback story fueled by personal drive and the love and support of people around him. Derek shares with us: his battle to overcome the physical and mental challenges on the road to recovery; learning to give grace when progress is slow and goals need to be reset; and how his faith helped him and heal and incredibly to forgive. It’s an amazingly candid and revealing conversation and we’re sure, like us, you’ll be inspired and a little bit in awe.

The other is the Marginal Gains Podcast for the thinking cyclist where they “make a big deal about the little things and show how those little things can be a big deal. Yes, aero socks, shaved legs and good chain lube do make a difference.

We touch on his difficult childhood and ultimately being raised by his grandparents. Remy has been very busy, buying his first home, racing bikes, running a bike shop and just generally kicking ass in every way. His love and enthusiasm for cycling and life in general is very contagious. We also touched on his Visions of Grandeur ride. Sacramento to Tahoe via Gravel.. Should be an epic and looking forward to it. Hope you all enjoy this one as much as I did. I did this Podcast without my lovely and talented co host Dave as he had to go to work of all things..

In this Episode we are joined by Tara Llanes. Tara had a prolific career as a bike racer that included many championships in BMX that put her in the BMX Hall of Fame, as well as several National Championships on the Mountain bike in both 4 cross and Downhill. Her professional Mountain Bike racing career was cut short due a crash while racing in Colorado that caused a catastrophic injury to her back that left her paralyzed in 2007. Tara and Mike have a special history together as they both were associated with Giant Bicycles at the time of the crash and Mike was recruited to help with the first Race For Tara thanks to Livermore Locals Thayne and Brian Bolin, both big fans of Tara. The initial race was simply to raise money to help with Taras recovery but later shifted focus to charities involved with recovery. We ran this race for 5 years and raised lots of money thanks to the mountain bike community. We don't talk much about the event during the podcast because there are so many other great things to talk about with Tara but thought you would like to know the connection and the history. In the podcast we talk about her prolific career in bike racing, her recovery from injury, some of the challenges and what it took to get her off the Oxy that she had been abusing since the injury. Additionally we talk about her current passion wheelchair basketball and how she became a Paralympian. Her experience in the covid Olympics in 2021 and the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. We also discuss life after basketball. This was maybe our longest episode but definitely one you don't want to miss.

As a Be Good Foundation Bikepacking Scholarship recipient and active Trips for Kids Leader she’s on a mission to help people discover the mental health benefits of cycling and the pure joy of spending more time in the great outdoors. We, like many off road riders, are often frustrated by the lack of "legal" trail access. This week we spoke with Mark Moskowitz of the Mount Diablo Trails Alliance. The Alliance is a band of volunteer Trail Champions working to maintain and repair trails on Mount Diablo with a focus on safety, preservation and equitable access. Mark shared the extensive Road & Trail Management Plan to expand shared access on new and existing trails within the Park and how their work is a blue print for other State and Regional Parks. He also dispelled the myth that many Parks are "anti-mountain bike". According to Mark most are just resource constrained which is why the Trails Alliance efforts are so critical.

In this episode we meet up with Joel Luna and his 2 boys Josh and Jacob. Joel grew up in the Philippines and moved to the US at age 15. He raced bikes there before coming to the US and has also raced here but this episode is focused on his two boys and their life racing bikes. Josh 18 and Jacob 14 are racing road bikes and doing quite well. They are both racing for teams and developing as young cyclists. Mom and Dad have given them tremendous support and have even gone so far as to dedicate a room in their house for smart trainers and Zwift sessions. These sessions often include the boys and Mom and Dad! The boys share stories of and some of their challenges of racing and training while juggling a full-time school schedule. From where we are sitting it seems like they are doing quite well. Neither of them really focusses on climbing and yet at this year's Mt. Diablo Challenge they managed to both ride sub 55 minutes which is very respectable at any age!

We first learned of Willie Stewart from our previous guest and Author Matt Fitzgerald. Matt's book "How bad do you want it" featured several stories of athletes that have overcome obstacles to achieve amazing success athletically and in life, but Willis's story really stood out in a book full of amazing stories. Willie lost part of his left arm while at work and found an inner fuel that he didn't know he had. Hear his amazing story as he tells it. I promise you his story is not one you will never forget!

Chris Padavana former owner of Eden Bicycles is back for his third appearance on the show. We talk about the factors that led up to his decision to sell the shop right as the covid pandemic was coming to a close and how he got out at the best possible time as the market has really taken a turn since he has been out of the industry. Bicycle Retail is challenging for many reasons staffing, long hours, shrinking market, company stores, online sales, etc.. It seems like the Independent Bicycle Retailer (IBR) is being attacked from all angles, but it is not all doom and gloom. We all agree that even with all of the challenges there will always be solid demand for a quality IBR! We also touch on retired life, Chris seems to be adapting to it nicely and he has Dave and I a little Jealous ;) Ahh maybe one day but neither of us can see that just yet. Enjoy!

This was a special one, getting the chance to chat with one of the original creators of what would eventually turn into the first mountain bike. Charlie grew up in Marin County and started riding dirt trails on old beach cruisers with some of his friends, Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, Alan Bonds, and Tom Ritchey to name a few. The beach cruisers would go thru some heavy modifications to make them work on a local trail that they affectionately referred to as Repack. (Named that because after descending the mountain you would have to repack your rear coaster brake hub with grease as it all got smoked out while trying to descend the trail.) The modified beach cruisers were called Klunkers. The Klunkers were 30's and 40's Schwinn, Excelsior, Colson, etc. cruiser frames that were stretched wide to accommodate gears and drum brakes, forks were reenforced with truss rods, and of course they were stuffing knobby tires on the bikes. We cover some of this and many other elements to Charlie Kelly's prolific career that included starting the first timed Downhill Mountain Bike race, he would later go on to publish the Fat Tire Flyer magazine and help to establish Norba (National Off Road Bike Association) but Perhaps most significantly he authored the book the Fat Tire Flyer. The full history of the evolution of the mountain bike. If you have not read this book yet, I strongly recommend it! It is a fantastic tale of how we got to where we are today with the mountain bike. Charlie truly has the magic touch. Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did.

Well we had a last minute guest cancellation so Dave and I got a chance to cover the Mt Diablo Challenge from this past weekend and it also gave us a chance to catch up on some World Tour talk. We've had such a great run of guests we haven't had the chance to catch up on some of the things going on with our favorite sport at the highest level. So we nerd out a bit on Racing and bid farewell to one of the true greats Peter Sagan! Peto had one of the most prolific careers of all time! I will try to give him proper justice as we didn't do a great job on the podcast. 18 Grand Tour stage wins, A record 7 time Green Jersey winner in the TDF, 3 consecutive world champ titles, 5 time National Champ, Flanders and Roubaix Champ, and 3 time Gent Wevelgem champ, and so many others, So much winning in his career. Oh yeah and throw in the Tour of California while we are at it! Doing it all with a style and panache never seen before or since. Peto we solute you!

In this episode we are joined by Mark and Raghu from the Mt Diablo Challenge. They are two key principles in putting on this event along with more than 150 volunteers. This is the 40th installment of this Northern California Bay Area Classic event and will take place October 1st. They are expecting to hit max capacity this year with 1000 riders so if you are interested in doing the event you should sign up now. You can register at www.mountdiablochallenge.com Use the code bj40 you will get a discounted rate as a listener of the podcast. Dave and I will be set up at Monte Vista during registration to chat with you all and if you have any guest suggestions for the podcast or feedback that would be great to hear. If you have never climbed Mount Diablo by bike it is truly a tough challenge but a very rewarding one. The climb itself is 11.2 Miles and climbs a total of 3249 feet. It's a tall order for a recreational rider and a great challenge for the most experienced rider. Some will race but most will just ride, additionally there is a great BBQ after the ride where they will dish out some prizes and there will be live music. The great thing about the Mountain Challenge is the road is closed to the public so the only cars on the road will be those in support of the event. It's the best way to ride the mountain! Proceeds from the event go to Save Mount Diablo and the Diablo turnouts project.

Sorry the first 4 mins of this podcast was pretty choppy, but we got it sorted out and didn't encounter any issues for the remainder of the podcast. Please listen thru that as Anna is a very compelling guests in many ways. I think we can all learn from her approach and mindset. Anna lays it out perfectly for anyone struggling in this area.  This episode has something for everyone.  you can follow Anna on instagram @annnahicks and her team @cyniscacycling

A lifetime in the making. Beau and Mike have dreamed of riding places that are legendary in Italy, France, and Switzerland. Instead of paying for an all in one cycling tour company to guide them they threw the bikes in the back of rental car starting in Milan. They drove through the Alps to ride the legendary mountain passes they only had seen on TV or in magazines growing up. Rides included the SellaRonda event in the Dolomites, Gavia, Stelvio, Furka Pass, Tremola San Gottardo, Alpe d'Huez, Mont Ventoux, Col D'Izoard, Col del Colombiere, Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier, and Col del Nivolet.
