Being born in Guinea-Bissau, he would live an immigrant’s life in Portugal and eventually in England—and while he was interested in modeling, the industry’s standards hindered him at first. Glitz. Glamour. Allure. These are all words we think about, when we think of the fashion world. In this interview Elise Borja gives us a glimpse of what lies behind such glitz and glamour. Working for some of the biggest fashion houses and fashion publications, Elise reveals how she was consistently told to stay “in her lane” simply because she wanted to move away from the “negativity” and the “toxicity” that rules the fashion industry. In such a world mental health struggles, not making a living wage, not getting a real lunch break and working till 2-3 am in the morning is all seen as a norm and is almost expected. Elise tells Res Publica Editor Aimann Naveed about how she’s planning to open her own fashion consultancy brand “Reformer Studios”.The brand will display how one can have both: being a part of the fashion world without it ruling your life.

From the rise of populism to the increasing growth of inequalities and now the existential crisis of climate change it seems for many more justified than ever to ask if maybe the modern world needs a massive rethink to avoid disaster. Such a realisation poses a massive problem for the dominant ideology of our age, liberalism. Is the predicament we're in now as individuals, nations and indeed an entire species the result of an over-commitment to liberal tenants or a failure to recognise them sufficiently. Is a post-liberal future on the horizon and if so is that a good or bad thing? What would it even mean to go about understanding/constructing a post-liberal world order after its seemingly unrivalled dominance for so long? Is it even possible? All these questions and more will be discussed with our panel of students and experts as we try and parse out whether the 21st will be another century of liberal triumphalism or where the ideology finally meets its (perhaps overdue?) end.

OnlyFans has become a name synonymous with pornography – but many are starting to question the ethics of this so called ‘progressive’ site. Heralded because of the independence it gives sex workers, OnlyFans claims to provide a much safer environment for both its users and creators. In reality, the platform is failing to perform many of its safeguarding requirements. From the innumerable instances of underage creators, privacy violations, revenge porn, stalking and sexual harassment, this site really needs to buck its ideas up.
