We review episode 12, season 1 of the Sitcom “Whoopi” entitled “American Woman” where Rue guest stars as Marian. A sex charged senior who is staying at Mavis’ hotel so that she & her friends can get high. Meanwhile one of her friend’s becomes paranoid that Naseem who works at the hotel is a terrorist because he is Persian as he studies for his U.S. citizenship test & calls the police on him.
Also, Mavis’ brother Courtney appoints himself to rid the hotel of Marian & her friends as he does not approve of drugs. In another scene Mavis & her multi-cultural group of friends discuss immigration issues & how “illegals” are stealing their jobs & should come to this country the “right” way.
While this episode aired 19 years ago, many of the themes mentioned are still relevant today which of course caused us to have many side bars aside from just reviewing the episode.
Shows like this are important as they display ignorant beliefs, however the problem is many people in real life think the way some of these characters do & don’t see anything wrong with it!

In honor of Pride Weekend we reviewed one of the most iconic Golden Girls Episodes, Season 2, Episode 5: “Isn’t it Romantic”.
We’re joined by Matt, an Ok Petunia from one of our country’s the Gay Mecca’s as we breakdown the episode where Dorothy’s Lesbian friend Jean comes to visit & ends up having “the hots for Rose”.
This is marked one of the first television portrayals of an openly Lesbian character on TV & possibly the first in a sitcom. At the time Gay Marriage was still illegal & would remain so for another 29 years.
While the actress Lois Nettles was not a Lesbian, this was a rare moment (even today) where an LGBTQIA person was portrayed as “just another regular person” & not just a stereotype, because we are just regular people!

Throughout the series starting with the pilot & even on it's Spin Off (The Golden Palace), The Golden Girls has made it seem as if it's normal or expected for men to cheat. Despite them all being very strong & independent women, this is one area where they all seemed to default to a more nonchalant response to something so serious.
The hosts introduce themselves with a little backstory about why they love The Golden Girls & how their mutual love helped to start their friendship.
We also dive into the first episode of the show that has divided Golden Girls fans for years where despite having no business experience or Hotel experience (aside from Blanche's hourly room rentals), The Girls decide to buy a hotel after Dorothy moves out, because of course they do!
