The power that words have to influence and impact people. It is important for leaders to be aware of the way their words can affect others, both positively and negatively. Words can hurt, heal, motivate, or aggravate, and they have a big impact on our own emotions and energy.

In a world of conformity and noise, a daring leader must embrace her own unique gifts and find the courage to stand out, despite the fear of judgment and bullying. This episode of Soul Leadership is all about Authenticity. Through speaking to women, I learned that it can be hard to be true to oneself when there is so much noise in the world and fear of being judged. Leaders are meant to stand out, and when we embrace our unique gifts and talents, we can be successful and satisfied. Everyone is trying to fit in, but we can focus on the positives and find like-minded people to support us in becoming more comfortable in our own skin. As we do, we can share our opinions, be ourselves and reveal our true selves to the world.

HOT QUOTES

"Leaders are meant to lead and stand out."

"Life is never completely satisfying while you're pretending to be less than or playing small than who you really are."

"You're not for everyone, but you're for so many someones."

In a recent conversation, Michelle told her husband that he gets what he's willing to put up with. She was referring to a situation at work where he was being challenged. She encouraged him to express how he felt to the person or people involved.

When someone doesn't treat you with the personal standards you uphold or ignores this it can build frustration and anger. This can lead to negative consequences for those around you, even if they're not the direct cause of the problem. We all have our own personal standards, and it's up to us to decide what we're willing to put up with.

Asking the question, When was the last time you allowed space to dream? Michelle encourages listeners to reflect on their own dreams and what they want for their future.

Michelle speaks about how dreaming is something that we often stop doing as we get older, due to various external factors such as other people's negative reactions or our own busyness. How much is too much when it comes to sharing about yourself?

We have been conditioned to think that sharing stories of our personal life as leaders depict weakness. A leader should command respect by carrying a straight face to the office, firmly enforcing their orders, and doesn't ever smile.

A leader to many people is the word "dictator."

The world is changing drastically, and this is affecting everything and everyone. Our previous conceptions of who a leader should be and what leadership entails don't hold much anymore these days.

People want to have someone they can relate to and trust. As a leader intending to express yourself, you could also have the problem of not knowing to what extent do you share your personal information when trying to relate with your colleagues and mentees.

Join me in this episode as I will share tips for becoming an effective leader by stepping into your visibility.

Notable Quotes

  1. (3:32) At the time, I was excited, skeptical, and scared but open to sharing who I was, my story, my passion, and my journey.
  2. (6:07) When you share your story, you have to be able to accept the impact that your story makes.
  3. (9:22) I had to work hard on myself and my leadership of loving and accepting the parts of me.
  4. (9:40) When you discover that you are being and living the true version of yourself and helping others to do the same, you will be beyond comfortable with visibility and being you because it would come from a place of truth and transparency with real purpose.
  5. (14:05) The fact is that getting more visible and being more of you is a journey.

Topics Discussed

  1. (2:09) Michelle's visibility journey.
  2. (8:11) The importance of being visible as a leader.
  3. (10:50) Guidelines to stepping into your visibility.

The #1 thief of JOY and something that I see happening way too often with women in business, is COMPARISON.

The Comparison Game.

It’s the number 1 thief, removing joy from successful women entrepreneurs, not just from business but also life.

It’s something that many women default to. I see it way too often, and I’ve been guilty of it!

I can fall back into the trap BUT I’ve learnt how to bounce out of it.

This thief of joy can hold many women back in progressing further, in taking action.

Because what happens when you play the Comparison Game is, you move into a dark space. In blame. Emotions start playing with us. Self-doubt sets in. Negative self-talk begins.

Things like;

  • I’m not good enough
  • Why can’t I get this?
  • I should be better at this?
  • I should already be earning that much money.
  • Why does she get to have it?
  • Why does he get to have it?
  • What do they have that I don’t?

So it often becomes not only self-comparison, but then it becomes judgment. At that point, you need to catch yourself doing it and ask yourself to stop right there.

Join me for this Episode of the Boss Ladies UNCUT Podcast for my tips on how to avoid playing the Comparison Game.
