In this episode on prim rose light, I’m delighted to welcome Vishal Patel. Vishal is a principal at prideview. He talks through his journey into entrepreneurship and his family business venturing into property and how the real estate sector has transformed over the years. We learnt more about his role models and also, his deep sense of spirituality which is based on the Hare Krishna philosophy. Vishal is also very much a family man and this really comes through that at he’s conscious to want to drive strong family values and morals to his children. This is a really wholesome episode where we learn about charity and the importance of giving back and not getting so caught up in the materiality that this world can offer, to the detriment of more spiritual dimensions that we can seek. This is a subject very close to my heart as a neurodiverse individual and I’ve been wanting to have someone on this hugely important topic for some time. I’m thrilled Luke who works in learning and development in the insurance sector takes us through his journey. We both discuss a raft of experiences from his early diagnosis contrastingly to my recent diagnosis. It’s an honest account very much made to showcase our superpowers but also, to discuss that more support, education and awareness is needed to enable us to thrive. That said, we are in great company - so many people with incredible talents including sir Richard Branson, Walt Disney and Sir Antony Hopkins are well known public figures. In this episode of Prim Rose Light, I am delighted to have Manoj Kerai, author of The Burning Bride, joining me. In this episode, we discuss some big topics like dowry’s which are particularly prevalent in South Asian culture and the negative impact this can have on women (and their families) whether it’s domestic violence, female infanticide and other crimes.

We cover these topics through Manoj’s novel, which is based in India and challenges an entire society to rethink attitudes towards women and gender equality. Based in India the story is told through the eyes of 9 women. The multiple perspectives highlight psychological, social and cultural factors with prop up systems of violence against women in India, but also highlights the hypocrisy of people who worship women in the forms of Goddesses but treat them badly by committing acts of violence against them.

Manoj has also been a Samaritans volunteer for 8 years and has worked in the mental health space for 18 years since he was at school where he set up a peer mentoring scheme for students at the school. He currently works for Macmillan Cancer Support where he supports the management of the partnership with Boots.

If anyone would find it helpful to reach out, please do contact: 0808 808 0000 which is the Macmillan number. If anyone needs any support from the Samaritans, please contact: 116 123

Equally if anyone would like to contact Manoj directly (whether for a signed copy of the book, The Burning Bride or otherwise) - I’ve linked his details: www.facebook.com/manojkeraiwriter and Manojie is the Instagram handle

Welcome to season 3 of Prim Rose Light. I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome you to this new series. I look forward to bringing you interesting, educational and topical content, along with my guests, as we continue to cultivate a conscious community. Here at Prim Rose Light, the focus is on mind, body and soul topics including personal development and spirituality, but also, real life topics impacting real people. It’s really important to me that I use my platform and voice to make a positive difference in the world.

To kickstart this series, we are talking about a very raw and real subject. We hear first- hand Gopika’s account of having a very premature baby, Khush who was born at 26 + 3 weeks back in 2020. Gopika shares her shocking birth details which is one of bravery despite many complications along the way.

Some of the UK stats which are quite staggering are: 60 000 preterm births a year so that means 1 in 13 born before 37 weeks There's 3 categories Moderate to late (32-37 weeks) Very preterm (28-32 weeks) Extremely preterm (less than 28 weeks)

Within this sensitive subject, we unpack the following big topics

  1. Prematurity and birthing experiences. The incredible NHS and the work they do.
  2. The pressure around getting pregnant and other complications that often go unspoken but impact behind the scenes (a non exhaustive list includes, PCOS, infertility, IVF, career circumstances, general feelings of not being ready to have kids)
  3. The role of a father and sometimes the (lack) of support available for them, recognising this is a unit, not just mum and baby.
  4. Navigating having a baby through a pandemic and the mental health implications. Breastfeeding and what’s good for mothers to eat but also why the mind is so powerful.

However I must also disclaim that this podcast was done in an effort to share some of the difficulties women can encounter. We both want to stress that this offer some comfort that women that you are not alone. Gopika has been very keen to share her story as a tool to help mothers. She has kindly shared the following resources to anyone who needs it:

In this season finale we end on a real corker to round up the year as we explore the rise and fall of one of the biggest corporate flameouts and venture capitalist bubbles in recent years -- the story of WeWork, and its hippie-messianic leader Adam Neumann. I highly recommend everyone whose interested to watch on sky - Wework:How to lose $30billion in two weeks. We are joined by Sohil who works as a professional investor and fund manager to gain his insights on company valuations, and how inflated they can be in the private sector which doesn’t have the same level of scrutiny as public companies. We also discuss that this was essentially a real estate company which had technology enabling elements but it was not (despite its marketing) a technology company. We also discuss the importance of good corporate governance, what good leadership looks like and the vitally important ESG that is dominating the world of finance and beyond. We discuss flexible working vs hybrid working which is a topic that has become a topic on everyone’s lips (especially relevant for white collar workers) since the start of the pandemic and what predications are for how this may unfold. Finally, Sohil concludes by providing some useful and generic tips for those who are keen to invest in 2022. Thank you to everyone whose supported my podcast. It would mean the world to me if you could like and share my podcast widely with your friends and family. Here’s to season 3 as we continue to cultivate our very own conscious community, so glad and grateful that you’re a part of it. Sending you love and light.

In this episode of Prim Rose Light we meet with Lucy Shepherd to discuss her unique career path, her lifestyle and training regime (both mentally and physically) but also gain an insight into how she deals and manages fear and near death experiences. Certainly, as our world grows ever smaller and more connected, it’s easier to travel, but harder to find true adventure but at twenty-eight years old, Lucy is at the forefront of modern exploration.

From high mountains, rainforests, to the Arctic, she has plotted a thrilling, inimitable path. Made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society at age twenty three and on the council for the Scientific Exploration Society as a result of her expedition achievements.

Lucy's expeditions have taken her all over the globe and she now shares her love for this world with others by both guiding expeditions to the Arctic and sharing her own adventures on film.

Her next expedition takes her back to the Kanuku mountain range and she knows this is the biggest expedition yet..

Lucy in her own words:

“I am a strong believer that when we put ourselves in challenging situations, whatever that may be, that our character grows and we become better people as a result. Given the current climate of how those in power are acting and how mental health and obesity problems are on the rise, we could all do with stepping outside our comfort zone and doing what we previously thought impossible.”

In this episode I’m joined by North Londoner, Rohan Wagle whose half Indian and half Maltese. He chose to do a degree in ‘human genetics’ at UCL but knew he had always wanted to be a pilot, having done some flying whilst at University. As such he decided to commit to it as a career upon graduation. Rohan joined a British based flying school in 2007, which did the basic flying phase in New Zealand, so moved there for 18 months. In 2009 he completed the remaining training back in the UK and in 2010 got his first job flying for easyJet (based in Bristol then Toulouse). Having left there 7 years ago, he’s currently flying long haul (although not much of it recently...) at British Airways, based out of heathrow.

We therefore explore his role and journey as a pilot and health (exercise, diet and sleep, and their effects on mental and physical health) given the sedentary job and the fact you’re going against your circadian rhythm. We also touch upon how the industry is changing and how climate change is a consideration in the aviation industry. I hope you’ll enjoy a slightly different episode. Please note that these are Rohan’s views and not intended to represent BA’s views or policies. Sending you love and light. Roshni ❤️🙏😊

In this episode I was absolutely delighted to be joined by Charlotte from pensions for purpose. We discuss the super important subject that is ESG, what does this mean and how can we move towards more impact investing. We also give practical tips for investors (both institutional but more retail) and consider why it’s taken so much time to even get the finance industry to take this seriously as it’s not been cost factored into our models. The current Coronavirus pandemic has provided us with an opportunity to take stock, to think about the interconnectedness of the global community and economy, and the impact we have on one another’s lives and the environment. We are recognising in real time the value of the environment, society and good decision making (or governance) as well as the failure of bad decision making, of not valuing the environment and different groups in society. The current situation has provided some indicators on what the future may look like and what sacrifices we need to make in order to create a sustainable world. We have seen satellite images showing reduced air pollution across the world as a result of lockdowns and with a potential long-term shift to working from home. We have also seen a shift in emphasis on key workers and key services which benefit society. We have, overnight, changed the role of the state and its reach, recognising people’s value based on contribution, not profit. Every person is playing their part and every component in the chain needs to work to make this possible. I hope you find this topic on personal finance helpful. Sending you peace, love and light. ❤️🙏

In this episode, I was thrilled to have Priya talk about her fascinating journey which is very international indeed! Priya and I discuss her life’s work, her mission to make things better but also the lack of female mentorship in global health and the choices she was confronted with. We also explore some of the struggles women face from safety being abroad to thinking about life choices such as fertility and freezing eggs when pursuing a career. I hope you enjoy this podcast. By way of background, Priya is an optometrist by training but took the route of public health and working globally. She grew up in Tanzania and had a very diverse upbringing between boarding school in Kenya and then an International School in Tanzania.

She had a keen interest in bringing her passion, her spiritual quest and her career together. And global health was the perfect fit for her. Of course not withstanding it’s challenges! She realised very quickly after doing a few voluntary trips abroad that building health systems should have a sustainable approach and not one off feel good projects.

Currently she holds a dual position, as Assistant Professor in International Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Head of Global Programme Design at a social enterprise called Peek Vision based out of London working in ten countries.

Priya’s experiences and challenges come from her work in implementing projects and teaching in over 20 countries. Her PhD has led her further to better understand how complex behaviour change is, especially in resource scarce settings.

She’s been recognised by the World Council of Optometry for her role in public health as a young leader and has recently also been included as a Fellow of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics. And a couple of weeks ago was admitted into the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.

She continues to walk on her spiritual path and had made running a part of her journey with an obsession woth running marathons and when she couldnt do that, decided to climb Mt Kilimanjaro!

In this episode I’m delighted to be joined by Nicky Turvey where we discuss how our landscape is so pivotal in our lives and the meaning it can have on our lives. We also explore climate change and capitalism and how these concepts are at odds with each other. Within this episode we also explore Buddhism and what it means to live a truly rich and enriched life. By way of introduction to Nicky, she was born in a small village in Bedfordshire where all her immediate family relatives lived within 1 mile of each other, but left at 7 to relocate to west Devon due to her fathers work commitments. She continued to live in west Devon and Cornwall, always only 5 miles or less from the coastline for the next 21 years of life, until she had to move away due to economic opportunity only being available back in the South East. Nicky lived in Hertfordshire for 5 years and held a success career position in local government, but felt an incessant pull for the sea, and relocated to Southampton to work as the sustainability manager at the University of Southampton. Being nearer the coast she learnt to sail but the magnetic pull kept drawing her back to West Devon. She then decided to leave the hamster wheel and connect with nature and her roots.

She left a prestigious career in order to relocate ‘home’ at 34 having been away for 6.5 years. She now works at an Arts University as the Sustainability Officer and has more time connecting with what she loves spending time in nature, going on long hiking trips and practicing Buddhism.

In this episode we explore what is lifestyle medicine which encompasses a truly holistic process of health looking beyond the prescription of medication.

Incorporating Lifestyle Medicine changes into your daily life can often help avoid unnecessary medications and surgery and limiting the use of these to only when really needed. The key ways to improve your physical health are by eating nutritious foods, sleeping well, exercising regularly, avoiding intoxicants and most importantly looking after your own mental health to reduce stress and maintain healthy relationships (with yourself and with others around you).

Dr Bruce Lipton has been saying for years that our epigenetics means that “DNA is not our Destiny.” What this means practically is that by changing our mental and physical environment for healthier alternatives; we can change our genetic makeup and alter our future body health. We can prevent illnesses and even reverse long term mental and physical health conditions. So how can we keep our mind’s healthy? By changing behaviour patterns and shifting our mindset we really can achieve tremendous success in our lives and not be limited by ill health. By reflecting and understanding ourselves we can express our own true authenticity and true nature which will give us purpose and inner contentment. This removes stress and promotes resilience. We can use our conscious community, spiritual teachings, and scientific research to implement these changes in ourselves and reach our fullest potential.

In this episode Jay and I discuss the UK educational system, what is working well and what’s not working so well. The differences between public, grammar and state schools and the unfair advantages that follow and how we can to make it better and level the playing field. We also explore how we fare internationally compared to our international counterparts and which countries are excelling on this front with a very robust and comprehensive educational system but perhaps lacking on the real life skills we all need in adult life. All of these facets will impact the jobs that we will be able to do in the years to come as we work in a much more borderless way, which has been expedited by Covid 19. This podcast is important to me personally and its crucial that all children are given an opportunity to develop, pursuing their interests and have a strong foundation so that they can thrive in whatever they choose to do. I therefore was delighted to have my friend, Jay whose an ex-banker turned entrepreneur whose been working in the educational sector for 10 years and has a wealth of knowledge through his business know-how including with the UK governments steering committee on how to navigate this vital sector. Jay recommends reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell which isn’t focused on the educational sector but a great read for developing personally and professionally. Sending you all love and light. 🙏

This episode discusses a topic close to my heart - understanding our place in the world, being compassionate beings, to all living entities whom we share the world with as well as promoting vegetarianism. It also follows and explores some of the key messages from the recent shows on Netflix with Sir David Attenborough and ITV’s Prince William programme on the topic. I also hope this podcast provides some practical tips that we can all do as well as casts continued focus on this huge existential crisis, where we all as global citizens, not just governments and businesses change habits and be part of the internationally focused solution. The reality is that our world, community and future generations need us all to be part of this change to reduce carbon emissions and move towards more greener solutions. Sending you lots of peace, love and light. 🙏
