From Anne Lamott's book, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, Lamott shares the story of her brother who had a project due on birds. Spoiler alert, he waited until the last minute to get it done.

And then, Lamott's father gives the best advice when her brother was feeling overwhelmed. That's the focus of this week's episode.

In this episode, I talk about the following:
the feelings of overwhelm
putting a plan of action together (go back and listen to Episode 116 - Rome Wasn't Built in a Day
how deep breaths help, because the "things" aren't going to go away
how understanding impermanence helps
*being reflective is the key practice

We all know that Rome wasn't built in a day, and yet we think that overnight success happens. I hate to break it to you, but it doesn't. It take planning, consistent effort, and patience. In this episode, I break down these three components to share a recipe for building our own Rome.

So many of us use our phones for good reasons, but then there are the times that we mindlessly scroll. We intend to only scroll for a few minutes, but then we look up and 30 minutes has gone by. How did that happen?

We scroll because we are bored or we don't think we have time to do anything else. We even pick up our phone without realizing we've done it.

This episode is all about using those gap minutes to do things instead of picking up our phone. In this episode, I talk about making a list of things to do, setting ourselves up for success, and setting a timer for our phone use.

Also, the podcast is a nominee in the Mindset Category of the Women in Podcasting Awards. You can vote HERE!

This week I'm sharing a story about the phrase, "Shine Bright." We all have ways of letting our light shine in others' lives. We can share a smile, hold a door open, ask how someone is doing, ask how we can help, and let people know we are thinking about them.

I want to encourage us all to let our lights shine brightly in a world that can sometimes seem dark.

I'm taking on a new role in my school as a school counselor! In this episode, I wanted to share some backstory as to why I did it and then facilitate some questions we should all ask ourselves in our job, vocation, or career. It's a great way to look at our mindset so that we can continue growing and adding value to the world.

In this episode, I asked these five questions:
1. In what ways am I fulfilled in what I'm doing?
2. How am I challenging myself or am I simply going through the motions?
3. What value am I adding or what value could I potentially add?
4. How might I better advocate for myself?
5. What skills do I bring to the table and what skills do I want to add to my arsenal?

Also, VOTE for me in the Mindset category for the Women in Podcasting Awards! I'm honored and excited to be a nominee. Check out the link HERE!

We've all heard the saying, "Comparison is the thief of joy," but I would venture to say that a lot of us find ourselves comparing our lives to others. Whether it's trips, jobs, families, etc., social media and society often give the perception that everyone else's life is better than ours.

In this episode, I invite you to stop being on the hamster wheel of comparison and find daily joy. As we all know, we are not promised tomorrow, so start living a life of joy today that excludes comparison.

I've had a lot of friends over the years who have talked about manifesting what they want in life, but I never really thought about doing it myself. Then, it started happening organically, so I wanted to share a goal that I have that I'm super stoked about.

If you've listened to my podcast regularly, read some of my writing, or just know me personally, then you are aware that owning a bookstore has always been a dream of mine. I think it started with You've Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. There's just something about independent bookstores that I adore.

That dream has started taking shape in a different way than I imagined, and I feel like I'm manifesting this goal. So, come along as I share it with you and an article I read that exemplifies what I mean.

In this episode I refer to:
How to Manifest What You Really Want in Your Life
Episode 107 - interview with Danielle Helzer
Episode 105 - Discomfort

We've all heard the saying, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." However, it's completely unrealistic to go from negative to positive in a snap. We need the gap between the lemons and the lemonade.

Join me in this conversation as I talk about what it means to honor the gap and what it means to hold onto those lemons until you're ready to make lemonade.

In this episode, I refer to my conversation with Danielle Helzer in Episode 107. Go back and give it a listen as you learn how Danielle is working to make her bookstore a place of acceptance and welcoming in her community. You can listen to it here.

I am so excited to bring you this chat with Danielle Helzer. Danielle and I met a little over 15 years ago at the Nebraska Writing Project. She has been a teacher, worked for a non-profit, and now she is set to open her own bookstore. I'm secretly living vicariously through her as she begins this new adventure!

We talk about why she wanted to open a bookstore and her desire for it to be a love letter to her community. She wants it to be a place where people who are often marginalized feel not only welcomed but also accepted. Enjoy our chat!

You can find Danielle Helzer and Rooted Books & Gifts on Instagram. And, even if you aren't anywhere near Grand Island, Nebraska, you can still support her bookstore. When you make a purchase on bookshop.org, just put in Rooted Books & Gifts as the store you would like to support and a small portion goes to it.

Building habits are what will propel us when we are figuring out our ikigai, pushing through discomfort, and stretching ourselves with our goals. This is the last installment in the series on gaining ground in our adventures. In this episode I extensively refer to James Clear’s best-selling book Atomic Habits.

Clear outlines three readings why tracking habits is powerful:
1. It creates a visual cue that can remind you to act.
2. It’s motivating to see the progress you are making.
3. It feels satisfying to record your success in the moment.

In this episode, I refer to the other three episodes in this series: 103, 104, & 105.

I also talked about the article I wrote on Ikigai. You can find it here.

Unintentionally, I have a four-part series and this is part three. Part one was episode 103 about the Japanese word ikigai, which means reason for being. Part two was last week's episode 104 focused on how we handle discomfort. This week I'm talking about stretching ourselves, especially when it comes to our goals.

I can't wait to share what I love so much about goals, stretch goals, and both quantitative and qualitative data. I geek out on this stuff! I'm sharing my goals for year three of the podcast as well as a personal goal.

I hope this gets you to marinate on goals you've been thinking about and pushes you to jumping into them.

Discomfort sucks, but it’s necessary in order for us to grow. We need to expose ourselves to other points of view and to challenge ourselves to do challenging things.

In this episode I refer to The Power of Positive with Nikki Johnson Podcast. Give her show a listen, because she gives great advice in bite-sized chunks.

How do you handle discomfort? Do you expose yourself to other points of view? Do you allow yourself to be uncomfortable? This week I challenge you to experience something completely different from what you’re used to. Let me know how it goes.

Ikigai is the Japanese term that means “reason for being.” It’s your reason for living, for getting up in the morning. I share how ikigai has added more to my life and will do the same for you.

In this episode, I refer to the article, Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Joyful Life. I also talk about these four questions for you to consider as you deepen your reason for being:

Mission + Vocation = What does the world need from me?
Vocation + Profession = What can I do that I will get paid for?
Profession + Passion = What are you good at?
Passion + Mission = What do you love?

As you can probably see, there is a general theme in that all four questions and four buckets merge together to form your personal ikigai.

How often do you listen to your body? I’m sure that even superstar Taylor Swift listens to her body and is proactive. What can we all do to make sure we are looking out for ourselves before we burn out? I have five ideas to share with you: sweat it out through exercise, get plenty of rest, drink more than enough water, get some sun, and drink hot tea.

While none of these suggestions is revolutionary, try one of them and see what changes you start to notice in your body. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Eeek! I’ve hit 100 episodes of Let the Adventure Begin with Chris Denker, and I’m giddy! In this milestone episode, I share what my reasons to podcast continue to be: to serve, to build community, and to add value to others’ lives. This is kind of how I feel about being a teacher, and so podcasting for me is like a classroom for adults.

I’m also transparent about sometimes waiting until the night before to record an episode…like this one. There was so much I wanted to say, but it wasn’t coming together like I wanted to and then it did!

Enjoy and thanks for coming along for the ride. I can’t wait to see what the next 100 episodes bring!

As a subscriber to The Isolation Journals with Suleika Jauoad, last week’s email offered a prompt to write a poem about prayer. Two things, my prayer life is a hot mess and I don’t write poetry. So, now that I’ve gotten those two things off my chest, I chat about why this was a challenge, I share the poem I wrote, and I express what I learned from the experience.

In this episode, I refer to the following:
Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jauoad
Episode 91 - Release (Your Inhibitions)
Episode 96 - Why Journaling Is Essential to Life
Episode 97 - Vocal Journaling
Episode 98 - A Chat with Sara Vesely
My Prayer Life - My poem published in Change Your Mind Change Your Life

After a sneak peak last week into my sister Sara’s idea of vocal journaling, this week you get the full look at who she is. As a mom, wife, daughter, and career woman, she is so relatable to what many women in her shoes are experiencing. I appreciate her candor, openness, the many gems of wisdom, and her desire to keep learning. While I’m partial because she’s my sister, this chat was pretty special in many ways. Enjoy!

For those who don’t like to write in a journal, do I have a solution for you! Or rather, my sister Sara has a solution for you. Sara is going to be my guest on Episode 98. However, as we were prepping for our chat, she told me that she doesn’t like to write in a journal and that she basically does a verbal journal instead.

While I wasn’t planning to do a second episode on journaling, her ideas and wisdom were just too good to pass up. In this episode, Sara talks about how vocal journaling allows her to reflect, problem-solve, and communicate. I hope you enjoy this surprise episode as much as I did, and I look forward to sharing our actual interview next week.

How do you feel about journaling? A lot of people I know don’t journal. They feel like they don’t have time for it, or they say they don’t know what to write about. In this episode, my goal is to convince you through five reasons why you should take up journaling. Seriously, it’s essential to your life.

Doing things anyway is a challenging concept. In this episode, I explore this topic from a biblical standpoint of the three women who were going to the tomb to anoint Jesus. On their way, they wondered how they were going to move the stone that was covering the entrance. Yet, they went anyway.

What if we reframed negative self-talk about failure, our abilities, or if we’re on the right path? What if we did it anyway? That’s what I’m challenging us to do this week.

While I usually have an interview at the end of each month, I decided to talk about spiritual health this week. It’s a big week in the world of Christianity. It’s also a big month for my muslim friends and students observing Ramadan. Spiritual health is deeply personal whether you’re Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or someone who feels the Universe is their higher power.

So, I’m talking about the power of love and how it will always win over the love of power. I discuss some ways to do this in our own lives as well as holding on to the faith that peace will eventually come.

I’m also previewing my interview guests for April and May. I’m so excited that I needed to give you a sneak peak!

Are you thriving or surviving? I’m kind of in survival mode this week as we lead up to spring break. However, whether I’m thriving or surviving it’s all about Choosing Your Hard, and that’s the topic for this week’s episode.

I saw a reel on Instagram about Choosing Your Hard. Choosing marriage is hard, and choosing divorce is hard. Choosing to be obese is hard, and choosing fitness is hard. You get the picture.

So, come along on this journey with me as we all Choose Our Hard.

When you are letting your adventure begin, it means stepping out of your comfort zone. In this episode, I share a story about getting out of my comfort zone when I read a story to a group of 3rd graders during the weeklong celebration of Read Across America in my school district. I also shared how some of my students were afraid to get out of their comfort zone during a recent classroom activity and how important it is to not be afraid to fail.

Release is the word this week. Join me as I talk about the word and how we can go about releasing our inhibitions. I share some ways to do this: putting yourself out there, look at each day as a blank slate, be silly, appreciate the little things, and let go of negative thoughts.

In this episode I refer to
Episode 90 (conversation with Nikki Johnson)
Episode 88 (100 Day Journey)
Episode 83 (Make Your One Word Stick)
In this episode, I referred to this as Episode 84, oops!!

We’ve all heard of time blocking to schedule or day, but have you heard about time blocking to schedule your self-care? While we know that an hour a day of self-care is important, it feels pretty unrealistic.

That’s why I’m proposing that we all time block self-care into four 15-minute segments throughout the day. That way it feels like we’re doing self-care all day long. In this episode, I explain how to do just that by sharing how I practice self-care during my day. Maybe it will give you some ideas so that you can implement your own self-care routine.

And look out, because next week is interview week! At the end of each month, I bring on a guest who is letting their adventure begin. This month’s interview is with Nikki Johnson who is a mindset mentor and host of Power of Positive with Nikki Johnson Podcast. Check her out wherever you listen to podcasts, and tune in next week for our conversation.

Addiction is an adventure, an adventure of healing and recovery. Sometimes a topic will be put on my heart and this one hits right. I recently finished reading the book Recovery Dharma. It uses Buddhist practices to heal the suffering of addiction. A day or two after I finished it, I had a guided meditation on the same topic. So, I knew it was a topic I wanted to explore on the podcast.

**Disclaimer: I’m not a licensed therapist and am not coming to this conversation as any sort of expert. I’m merely having a conversation about the topic and the ways it has impacted my life.

In this episode, I refer to Money Matters, the episode where I talk about giving up spending at Amazon and Target. You can listen to it here.

Have you ever picked one word to guide, inspire, and add purpose to your life? I have, but then I’ve promptly forgotten about it. In this episode I refer to Episode 80 - Don’t Make Any New Year’s Resolutions. You can listen to it here.

This week I come to you completely humbled in talking about money matters. I share how much I averaged spending at Target and Amazon over the last three months of 2023 and what I’m going to do about it in 2024.

I have generally struggled with spending. I’m like a six-year-old in a candy store with a dollar burning a hole in my pocket. When I realized how much I spent at just TWO places, I knew I needed to make a change. Follow my plans throughout 2024.

Also, I mentioned the piece I wrote and had published in Change Your Mind Change Your Life on Medium.com. You can read it here.

This & That: Fall Edition

Hey! Welcome to the 75th episode of the podcast! This is my seasonal potpourri episode where I chat about what I’ve been listening to, watching, reading, and doing. I’ve been listening to music over podcasts, I’ve watched a few movies, I’m in the middle of reading two different books, and I’m in the season of making soups. And, I’m searching for a different word to use rather than “resonate.” :)

**When you're in a funk, it's hard to find contentment. That's how I felt recently when I had a headache and was dealing with the after effects of Daylight Saving Time ending. However, throughout the day I found five ways to help me get out of my down and out frame of mind.

In this episode I share those five ways:
1. Knowing my basic needs (and beyond are being met)
2. Doing guided meditation
3. Keeping a gratitude journal
4. Reading something to change perspective
5. Getting outside.**

Did you know you could give yourself a concussion? I know, I didn’t either but I made it happen. I share my story on this episode, but more importantly, I share what I learned from it. It was humbling, because I had to ask for help more often, I had to set boundaries for myself, and I had to slow down. These are things we all need to do for ourselves daily, not just by getting a concussion (LOL!).

In this episode, I chat about what Let the Adventure Begins means to me as I rebranded with a new logo. It’s all about these three words within the framework of the four facets of health (physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual): Embrace - new opportunities, Explore - try new things and see different options, and Empower - build strength and accomplishment.

School is back in session! Join me for this chat about my takeaways after one week of school. Author Jen Hatmaker was my inspiration for this episode with a recent Instagram post of hers (heads up, it has a little language). The takeaways for me have to do with the grace we need to give ourselves, the environment I want to create in my classroom, understanding it’s hard to sit, it takes some time to get organized, and decision fatigue at the end of the week is real.

Also, mark your calendar for next week and my next interview. I’m chatting with fellow educator and former colleague Laura Enos. Laura has a unique accountability system for working out in the summer that we are excited to bring to you. Laura has such an entertaining and wonderful way with words, and this is going to be a conversation you won’t want to miss.

July Challenge

Holy smokes, how did we get halfway through 2023 already? It feels like it flew by, and now here we are embarking on the second half of the year. This month I would like to challenge us all to work on either starting new or boosting existing habits.

In this episode, I’m going to work on the following habits: movement, hydration, healthier eating, reading, connecting with myself, and connecting with others. If that’s overwhelming, pick two or three to track throughout the month.

If you want an easy way to track, send me an email at gettoit11@gmail.com. I will share a spreadsheet with you. You can copy and customize it any way you wish.

Also, if you’re interested in purchasing the book (or other books for that matter), check out bookshop.org. In the upper righthand corner, you can choose a bookstore in your community. I have learned a lot of lessons in this first year, and I have condensed them into five pieces of advice when starting any new adventure: it’s a continuous process, it’s always evolving, problem solving is a part of it, you will stick to it when it’s meaningful, and celebrate the wins.

How Will You Show Up This Week?

Do you ever ask yourself that question? Me neither. However, it has been weighing on my heart lately to chat about it. The universe aligned when that exact question was posed at church recently. That’s when I knew the time was right.

Every so often we need to take inventory of our lives. Are we playing the long game but focusing on what we can do incrementally? If not, we need to.

Episode 46: The Human Experience

We can all learn things from current events. I don’t know if you’ve heard about the drama regarding Meghan Trainor, but I have some takeaways that we can all learn and grow from if we are willing to do so. Three things we can learn as we all go through this human experience is making an authentic apology and amends, not letting people live rent free in our heads, and letting people know how much they mean to us.

Also, congratulations to Sheri from Minneapolis! Sheri is the winner of the giveaway as a way to celebrate 1,000 downloads of the podcast. Thanks to everyone who sent me an email letting me know why you listen and what resonates with you. I loved hearing from you!

Episode 45: What Makes a Relationship Work

As the last part of this four-part series on relationships, this one focuses on five ways to make them work. I share these ideas as one human being to another on what has been successful in my 55 trips around the sun: relationships are give and take, you need to give each other space, listening is THE key component, change is inevitable, and all relationships have seasons.

By the way, I’m celebrating 1,000 downloads of the podcast. As a thank you, I’m doing a giveaway. Send me an email at gettoit11@gmail.com regarding what you enjoy about the podcast. Episode 44: Looking at Relationships

After focusing on ourselves the last two episodes (42 & 43), today the focus is looking at our relationship with others through a different lens. Joshua Fields Millburn (one of The Minimalists) has talked about this subject before on his podcast with Ryan Nicodemus. I outline the three different types of relationships he talked about, and I invite you to take a look at where the people in your life fall as we continue this journey. See if you’re spending the most time with the people you care about the most, or if someone is hijacking your time that you didn’t realize.

Episode 43: Get to Know Yourself

Last week I talked about filling your cup before doing it for others. We can’t pour from an empty cup. That also goes for relationships. We can’t have a relationship with someone else before having a relationship with ourselves. We are constantly evolving, but do we reflect on where we were and where we are going? I’m challenging you to do so today.

In addition, we are celebrating! The podcast has hit 1,000 downloads! This is truly a community effort. I love what I’m doing with this show, and you are the driving force as the community of listeners. You tell me what you enjoy, you give me feedback, and you’re sharing it with others.

Episode 41: Nourish the Seeds

Anything worth doing takes time, consistency, and discipline. It’s not about the end result but rather the process itself. That’s what today’s episode is all about. I’m sharing my meditation practice as an example and pose a few questions for you to consider.

Life is busy, and we find ourselves constantly on the go, but what if we hit the pause button for a moment? That’s kind of what I’m asking you to do this week. Episode 39: Does Something and Then Figure Out the How

So, last week a friend of mine and I signed up for a 10K. While that might not seem like a big deal, I haven’t done any sort of running event since 2016. Yikes! And, on top of it, the event is less than seven weeks away. After the initial, “What have I just done?” reaction, I jumped into figuring out the how.

Figure out something that scares you even a little bit to try and then figure out how you’re going to get there.

Episode 37: Trust and Thankfulness

Trust and thankfulness are foundational when it comes to starting something new. When we worry and obsess, we aren’t trusting in the process. Use trust as a way of knowing that the day is protected from those things. Thankfulness keeps us grounded in that when we are showing gratitude, then we aren’t criticizing or complaining.

Episode 28: Holiday Special

This is not your typical Holiday Special episode, because I’m not talking about Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. Today it’s all about the Winter Solstice. Why? Episode 16: Loving Kindness

I’m a huge proponent of meditation, and today I’m sharing one about loving kindness. It involves four different phrases, and I break each one down with testimony about how each one affected me. My hope is that it resonates with you and possibly inspires you to begin a meditation practice of your own.

As always, thanks for listening and helping the podcast grow. Continue sharing it with others and leaving a positive review if it strikes you to do so.

Episode 15: Change Scenery to Unblock Creativity

I am reading Todd Henry’s new book, Daily Creative, and the essay on unblocking creativity really hit home with me. As we change seasons in the Northern Hemisphere tomorrow, it made me think about how changing the scenery in my environment will help unblock my own creativity, which is precisely what Todd talks about. Maybe you can relate? In any event, enjoy the episode and make sure you grab yourself a PSL. :)

Episode 14: Simplify Your Life

It’s book talk time! I picked up Simplify Your Life by Mary Conroy when we were in Ireland this summer. It’s a great read about minimalism from an Irish author and I loved her perspective. I especially touched on her last chapter called “The Inside Job.” I think you’re going to enjoy this one.

If you’re interested in purchasing the book, you can find it here: Simplify Your Life

I like to take sermons and turn them into a personal development lesson, one that I can apply to my life. I’m excited to take this adventure with you to see where it can lead us!!

Episode 7 - Get Back on the Bicycle

Hello, beautiful people! This week’s episode is about getting back on the bicycle and beginning again, figuratively not literally. It’s hard to get a skill back that we were once proficient at, kind of like riding a bike. However, it’s important to be patient with ourselves, give ourselves some grace, and start riding again. Enjoy!
