On May 25th, 2024, I had the pleasure of attending the Happy Valley Strawberry Festival in Northern California. The festival, organized by the Happy Valley Community Foundation, supports local elementary and high schools, the school's GEAR-Up program, the Fire Department, FFA, 4H Club, Farm Trail, and Community Pride organizations.
It was my first time at the event, and I was thrilled with the experience. The positive energy the attendees and the festival workers exuded was infectious and uplifting. I particularly enjoyed the music and perusing the arts and crafts for sale.
I had the opportunity to interview many interesting businesses, including Mimi's Mercantile and Warm Light Candle Company.

On May 18th, 2024, I attended the Asphalt Cowboys Pancake Breakfast, the largest outdoor community breakfast in the United States. The event started in 1954 during Rodeo Week in Redding, California. It began small, serving about 700 people, and then grew to over 1,000 participants by the late 1950s.
The Cowboys, who organized the breakfast, initially used borrowed equipment from different sources, including the Sheriff's Department, local churches, and residents of Redding. Attendees enjoyed pancakes and sausage on makeshift tables made from doors and sawhorses "borrowed" from local lumber yards.
As the breakfast became more popular, the Cowboys realized they needed more equipment. They started buying or making their own, beginning with tables. They were lucky to purchase old McDonald's grills as the restaurants in northern California phased them out.
Over time, the Cowboys accumulated many grills, chairs, and tables. Today, the Asphalt Cowboys Pancake Breakfast is the most extensive outdoor community breakfast in the United States, with over 10,000 people gathering to share breakfast, regardless of the weather.

To start this episode, we'll recap the first three chapters of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "100 Years of Solitude" before delving into chapter four.
Chapter one introduces us to Macondo, a town that initially lacks names for things and resembles the Garden of Eden.
Chapter two reveals the tragic founding of Macondo, with townsfolk leaving their old home to escape murder and judgment.
Chapter three sees the Buendia family take Rebbeca in, which leads to an unusual phenomenon where they forget names, leading to insomnia.
We will explore the theme of solitude in the novel, highlighting its complexity and impact on individuals and their relationships. Chapter four concludes with solitude enforced by external forces due to actions and losses, symbolized by Jose Arcadio's tying to a tree, similar to the tree of knowledge in Adam and Eve's story. The significance of Monday as the day of creation and the beginning and end of everything is emphasized, marking the decline of the Buendia family.

I am thrilled to introduce Caroline, who will share her inspiring story throughout December on this podcast. The episode was recorded on a snowy day in Northern California.
I have had the honor of working with Caroline at a restaurant where I witnessed her determination. During a 5K event at school, I had the chance to run with Caroline and was again astonished by her fierce determination. I saw how she maintained the lead during the run and focused on her goal. In the spring semester of 2023, she graduated from college with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies. During this series, she will share her experiences about running, traveling, and her field of study.

Currently, we are on the fourth book titled Fresno City College Wrestling, where I am sharing the story of Paul Keysaw, Miguel Ruiz, and George Moreno.
Coach George is our last guest for this book. We met in 2018 at the Fresno City College wrestling room. During that year, when I joined the wrestling team, there were a few things that stood out to me about him. The first thing is that he would do the canal runs with the wrestling team. The second thing is he would join and lead team workouts. In our last episode, Miguel shared how leading by example can have an outstanding influence on our lives. That kind of leadership is one that Coach George brings into the wrestling room along with Coach Keysaw and the coaching staff. At the tournaments, he would join the team warm-ups and lead us through drills to prepare us for the competition.
During the next couple of weeks, Coach George is going to be sharing about his wrestling career, and he will be answering questions about wrestling.

It has been great to know a small part of Miguel’s life here in Tavito Stories. He has been someone who has raised the bar higher for me when it comes to leading by example. I am thrilled that as a first-generation college student, Miguel obtained his Bachelor's degree and has begun a career in Wall Street and a life in New York City.

During the team's runs with the wrestling at Fresno City College. Miguel and his brother Daniel would often be one of the top runners on the team. They would usually finish among the first runners. For me, it was always good to be surrounded by the Ruiz brothers because they shared a strong sense of leadership and a brotherhood that they were able to pass on to those who were around them, which is pretty special to see.

Miguel Ruiz is someone who I have looked up to since the first time I met him at Fresno City College. He was like an older brother on the wrestling team, with much knowledge, wisdom, and life experience. Getting Miguel to the podcast to share his life story with us is an honor. As a wrestler for Coach Keysaw, I learned so many things from him and all the coaching staff. I have enjoyed the ups and downs of the journey. They made my college experience as a student-athlete memorable. Many first-generation college grads have wrestled for coach Keysaw and have taken a step forward to building a career and a dream. Some have succeeded in the sport by becoming all-Americans, and others have had the opportunity to pursue a higher education. In this journey, success can be defined in many ways, from academic and athletic achievements to building our own family and impacting the lives of those around us. I am grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to interview coach Paul Keysaw.

Coach Keysaw has had a tremendous influence on my life. He has shown me not to give up on my dreams, which I have learned through pure example and excellence.
Around the end of the spring semester of 2019, I lost my job and apartment and had no financial support to afford another semester at Fresno City College. I remember going to coach Keysaw and sharing with him that I did not want to return to South LA. I shared with him that my dream was to be here. While he sat in his chair in his office, he reassured me that if my dream were to be here, he would do all he could to keep me in Fresno.
One day, while I sat at the Old Administration Building, the world seemed uncertain, knowing I had nowhere to live, most likely heading back home to live with family. At the OAB, coach Keysaw passes by and tells me he has good news to share. He said, “I talked to Josue Cruz, your high school coach, and Yero Washington from Beat the Streets LA. I shared with them about your current situation, and they have raised funds for you to stay another semester. All you need to focus on now is competing and getting good grades at school. I believe the funds should be enough to help you get by with food as well.” That was the most grateful I ever felt in my life. I stood up and hugged Coach Keysaw. I felt so grateful for Coach Cruz and Yero Washington.
His impact on the wrestling community has impacted the lives of many other people as he has done with mine.

During the summer of 2018, my high school coach, Josue Cruz, arranged a date to visit Fresno City College, where I would take some English and math examinations. When I saw the library and the wrestling room during the trip to Community College, I fell in love with it the first time. The old-school style of the library made me feel like that was the place to begin building a dream. The sign “tradition continues” on one of the wrestling room walls made me feel at home.
I love the red and white stripes around the wrestling room. I love the phrase Tradition Continues, and I’m grateful to share the story of three people who have impacted my life. Coach Keysaw, Coach George, and Miguel Ruiz

Since my Sophomore year of high school, It had been a dream of mine to go to the CIF State Championships and compete against the best wrestlers in the State of California. Yet, I knew third place at the LA City Sections did not qualify me for the Wrestling CIF State tournament.
After placing third at the tournament, I sat down with Adlee Fayaz, one of my coaches, and we talked about college wrestling for the first time. He reassured me that my career was not over yet and that a new chapter awaited me. Since I would be a Dream Act student, everybody advised me to look into college wrestling in California. That same day, I googled, “What are the best community college wrestling programs in California?” Some of the top three programs in the Fall season of 2017 were Fresno City College, Mount Sac, and Cerritos College.
Fresno City College, since 2016, had been a back-to-back state championship team. During the summer of 2017, at a wrestling camp, I met Paul Keysaw, the head coach at Fresno City College, for the first time. During the camp, he said, “I always tell my wrestlers that nobody works harder than Fresno City Rams.” His words resounded as I decided to join the Fresno City Rams.
During this book, I will be sharing from personal experience what being a Fresno City Ram was like—and the story of the people who impacted my life at Fresno City College.

Since I was in high school, I always wanted to experience what having curly hair is like. I shared this dream of mine with Delilah, and she suggested the idea of getting a perm. A perm is a hairstyle where the barber makes your hair curly for a few months.
When I first got my first perm with Delilah, I was happy to have accomplished that dream of mine. What made me happy the most was the way Delilah treated me after the perm. She continued to shape my hairstyle differently as the perm faded.
What I remember the most about Delilah is that she constantly experimented with new hairstyles, colors, and curls herself.

When I first met Delila, I noticed she set herself apart from other barbers by offering one-on-one haircut appointments at a studio she rented. I liked the way she ran her business because the haircut felt more personal to me. Throughout my time as a customer of Delila's, one thing I've admired about her has been how she balances work and family.

At traditional barbershops, I often felt under pressure when getting a haircut. The open space where you see customers sitting down and barbers taking walks in can be unpleasant for some people. At least, that is how it always felt to me because it often is an open space where you can see all the customers who walk in. It can be a great place to meet people if that is what you enjoy, but if you’re like me and like a nice and quiet place to get a haircut. Our third book, One-on-one with Delila, might be the podcast series for you.

There are people in this world who just know how to do things well. Delilah is one of those I have met who knows how to do that well. She is disciplined, creative, and organized. She is someone who loves to do what she does.

The time that I spent with Timea recording the podcast was amazing. As mentioned before, since I first met her, I knew I wanted to interview her and bring her to Tavito Stories to share her life story.
I am grateful to know that I was able to build a friendship with her before we recorded the podcast. The classes we had together, her openness, and her casual conversation made the recording of this podcast special. She has been one of my all-time favorite people to have interviewed. I hope to interview Timea again in the future. I am sure she will find the path toward the career of her dreams, meet great people along her journey, and continue to travel.

Timea has lived in 5 countries: Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Greece, and the United States; since she was very young, her parents have set the goal to visit as many countries as her age.
When we recorded the podcast, she was one country short since she turned 20 in 2022. She hoped to visit country number 20 by the summer of 2023, which she did. Portugal!
I hope Timea writes a book about her fantastic journey one day. I would love to read her story.

In the fall of 2022, my last semester of college. I happened to have another class with Timea which I believe was Introduction to graphic design. There we were, classmates again for another semester. Throughout that time, I was releasing the series Aspirational by Tavito Stories podcast.

When I first heard her foreign accent as she introduced herself to our journalism class, I was fascinated to hear such a beautiful accent in perfect English.
Timea sat at the desk behind my desk, and through Professor Rupert, I discovered she had a passion for traveling and journalism. At the age of 19, she had already visited 19 countries, one country for every year.
It took me a few weeks before I began talking to Timea. At first, our conversations were about the day and the weather until we became friends.
I’ve wanted to interview Timea since the first time I met her. I find funny and admire her personality and sense of humor. I am grateful to have met Timea, a light and kind-hearted friend.

Alexander’s father and grandma passed away. His marriage with his came to an end, he filled out the divorce paper, and then his license for pastorship gets taken away. He can no longer be a church leader; all his hard work ends like pieces of shattered glass in a mirror.

I last saw Alexander at the grocery store again on June 14, 2023. He received me with a handshake and asked how I was doing.
Then he said,
- “It’s been a long time since I last saw you. Are you still going to Wisconsin?” he asked.
I mentioned to him that I was not sure yet. I told him about my college graduation and caught up with him, telling him that sometimes in the ceremony, I would think of him and the stories he had shared with me.
I appreciated our friendship and his invitation to the men’s prayer group. His friend approached me and said, “God told me you’re on the right path. Continue to do what you’re doing; he cares for you.” I thanked his friend for his kind words and smiled.
After the men’s prayer group concluded, I grabbed my microphones from my car, and in his truck, I got my equipment ready to record the podcast. I am assuming that throughout that whole time, Alexander was preparing to share his story with me. He needed to get comfortable. He needed space and time. I needed to be patient until the timing was right.

Our date to record this podcast with Alexander was set up informally. I met him outside the grocery store, where we met for the first time. He asked me if I had any other plans for the day. I told him I had no agenda other than hearing his story. He suggested going to a Japanese restaurant and added that he would like to eat something before recording the podcast.
While dining at Tokyo Garden Sweet and Sour Pork, the Japanese restaurant, he asked me if I would like to join a men’s prayer group. I agreed. The location was not too far away from the restaurant. I asked him, “What do they pray for?” He told me the story of his friend who had lost contact with his daughter. He told me how God again brought him closer to his daughter as I attended the men’s prayer group. They gave me open arms and asked me to sit in the center. There I heard the story again of his friend who had been battling with addiction. He shared how much pain it had caused him to hurt his beloved daughter and how much he wanted her to forgive him. I could hear the pain in his voice and his repentance over his past life. Then as I turn back to look at Alexander, I can see him looking down and reading the bible. The group of men had asked him to read the bible for everybody, and I heard his voice there for the first time.
In this episode, Alexander will share the story of his transfer to a new prison where he finds his dream.

Alexander is a very kind, and humble man who I met at a grocery store. For personal choice he asked me if I could change his name which I have done. Catalina Island impacted the life of Luna early in her life. She grew up in a small community where everyone knew each other. Although living in a small community has its benefits, there are also downsides. Downside was something that was present in the Luna's life. A sheriff on the island once advised her to leave the island so she could leave her abusive boyfriend behind. Through the app Offer Up, I met Luna in the summer of 2020 while buying 1945 newspapers. As a precaution, I have changed her name to Luna, which means moon in English. Luna loves dogs and that is something I saw in her since the first time we met. In our first episode, she will tell us about her life in the Catalina Islands. As the series continues I'll share more about her life with dogs and how they have saved her life.

Michelle closed Red Bicycle Catering when Covid 19 lockdowns happened. Red Bicycle catering was a perfect unity of both Michelle’s love for cooking delicious whole food and her passion for providing nutrition education to her community. I remember once eating lunch with Michelle, her husband, and neighbor after a hard day of work. She made Barbecued chicken for lunch and it was, hands down, the best barbecue chicken I’ve ever had in my life. Aaron Torres's favorite dish is Poke, Poke bowl is a Hawaiian dish with chopped seafood. Originally its main ingredient is tuna.
According to timotis.com “it is believed that the poke bowl was first prepared by native Polynesians, who made it with raw beef fish, seasoned with sea salt and seaweed, and topped with crushed candlenut.”
Aaron enjoys all types of seafood, but Poke bowl is one of his favorites since it allows him to feel clean and energized, especially after a workout.

Jess Ballard is now a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher and received certification from Empowered Yoga Teacher Training (TM). The experiences that she has had in her field of study and work environment help her work as she teaches yoga through a trauma-informed and justice-centered lens, recognizing that people may show up on the mat for several reasons, experiences, and/or traumas that the 8-limbed path of yoga can help to regulate and heal. Further, these experiences and her degree allow her to create workshops for couples and the community and supply insight as a couple's coach. Her passion for working with couples and celebrating love has led her to curate custom ceremonies for partners on their wedding day as a wedding officiant.

Jess has worked in the Prevention Department at Peace Over Violence (POV) a rape crisis and domestic violence center.
Following her time with POV, she worked at Shasta College, overseeing the Shasta CARES (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education for Safety) Program. Within her previous roles at Shasta College and Peace Over Violence, she has had the opportunity to facilitate workshops and trainings on Community Resiliency Model, with a goal to “help to create “trauma-informed” and “resiliency-focused” communities that share a common understanding of the impact of trauma and chronic stress on the nervous system and how resiliency can be restored or increased using this skills-based approach.”, Dynamics of Sexual and Domestic Violence, Transforming Rape Culture, and Being an Active Agent of Change.

On today’s episode I will be sharing the story of Jess Ballard, the creator of Letting Love In. I met Jess while working out at NSFIT. I was working out on the stationary bike in the room where she used to teach Yoga. As I was heading out to wrestling practice, I met Jess walking into the room. She invited me to her yoga class and gave me her business card with her Yoga class schedule. I was in the middle of wrestling season, but I told her I would come to Yoga once the season ended. After the wrestling season ended, I followed through and began attending her yoga class.
I love practicing yoga because it is very easy on the body and relaxing. On our first episode Jess will be talking to us about her logo letting love in.

During this time of the year we get to see our family and loved ones. We also get to take a break from school. Some of us have just graduated from college like me or you. Riley Unrau is currently studying at Simpson University with a BA in Biblical Studies. In addition to that Riley’s favorite dish is Pad Thai. An interesting fact about Pad Thai is that by the end of World War 2 it was established as part of Thailand’s national identity. When Thai immigrants came to the United States, they brough this authentic and delicious dish with them. As you hear about Riley it’s important to mention that he is not Thai but Canadian. One thing I remember that Riley shared when we were talking at school is that he would like to pursue his doctorate in Biblical Studies. This past Sunday November 4 Simpson University and Shasta College presented Rutter Gloria which was performed by the Simpson University Chorale, Simpson Symphonic Choir, Simpson Jazz Ensemble and Shasta Symphony Orchestra. The concert was led by Dr. Kim and Dr. Jeff Specht, the music director and conductor of the Shasta Symphonic Orchestra. He is the director of Orchestra’s and band at Shasta College. Since I was performing at this event with the Simpson University Choir, I thought it would be nice to share with you how everybody else who is performing feels about the event. Our third episode sharing the story of Dr. Kim. I would like to take this time to share more details about KSK Music Production. On October 10, 2021, KSK Music Production released the first song titled “You’re”. A song that Dr. Kim stated was given to him through his prayers. A song that would bring healing not only to individuals, but also to nations. You can listen to this song on YouTube as You’re by Jade. You can also find it on YouTube through their page titled KSK Worship and follow them on Instagram as KSK Worship.
Moreover, one of the coolest moments I remember from choir is that Dr. Kim brought the singer of the song “You’re”. To sing the song at one of our choir sessions, along with singing the song at the school. There we were all able to listen to her sing live, which was an amazing experience.

Dr. Kim was a finalist for the 2021 America Prize for major choral works in the professional division. He has received international recognition after winning the Grand Prize at the 2008 Chanticleer Choral Composition Competition. Dr. Kim’s 2008 winning composition was titled Sanctus. According to Chanticleer.org the composition fuses older music forms and texts with a contemporary voice.
As Dr. Kim continues to share his story, on our second episode I will be bringing a choir student to share his experience with us.

Dr. Kim obtained his Bachelor of Music Composition degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. To earn his master's degree with Distinction in Choral Conducting he attended Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Where he was the graduate assistant conductor of Westminster Williamson Voices and graduate assistant conductor for Westminster Symphonic Choir. Later on, he continued to pursue his studies at the University of Maryland where he obtained his Doctorate in Musical Arts, in Choral conducting. Currently, he is the Director of Choral Activities at Simpson University, where he oversees the University Chorale, Redding Community Choir, and the Gospel Choir.

Irene Lopez has been the Dean of Education and Diversity at Simpson University. As the Dean of Education and Diversity Irene oversees the School of Education and gives her voice to innovative practice in areas such as policy development, and multicultural inclusion. Following graduation from Corning High School, Raul Arent enrolled in college. During his first years of college, he earned an AA degree in Liberal Studies from the College of Siskiyous. After graduating from the College of Siskiyou's, Raul transferred to Simpson University to pursue his BA in Communication. On top of earning those degrees, Raul was named Offensive Player of the Year at COS in 2019. In this episode, Raul shares how he found the career path of being a sports journalist.

Angie Hurtado is currently the Assistant Director of TRIO Student Support Services, where she help students with choosing a major, discussing career options, and creating a 4 year education plan. On Podcast #21 we talked with David Corona the head wrestling coach at Bell Gardens High School located in Los Angeles, California. David Corona has been coaching for many years in the inner city of LA at Marquez High School and Bell High School. Now he continues his coaching career at Bell Garden High School becoming part of the CIF Southern Section. Throughout the podcast we share his story on his beginning in the sport wrestling. As well as the point in his career when he decided he wanted to be a wrestling coach. He shares his experience coaching from mistakes he has done to the lessons he has learned from them.
In podcast #20 "Jose Cruz and Fremont High School Wrestling". We share Josue Cruz story on how he was introduced to wrestling, along with the moment when he realized he wanted to be a wrestling coach. He is a teacher and mentor to young students at John C. Fremont High School both in the wrestling mat and off the wrestling mat. Fremont High is located in the inner city heart of South LA, there he has send wrestlers to wrestle at the college level in his 10 years of coaching at John C. Fremont High School. As well, as creating contender for the LA City Championship and LA City Regionals in Los Angeles, a long with winning league championship, and sending contenders to the California State Championship event.
