In this episode, my focus is uncovering the financial challenges faced by doulas today and I explore the main reasons why some achieve significant financial success while others continue to struggle.

The importance of a smart business model is a top priority in building a financially stable business, but the close second and third are pricing that not only reflects your value but also allows you to live comfortably and the need for scalable income streams. I happily share the strategies that I used to build my business and encourage other birth and postpartum professionals to take actionable steps towards the growth and expansion of theirs.

In this episode I'm chatting with postpartum doula Jen Tawil, who uniquely combines her experience as a former private investigator with her doula practice and from that came the creation of her first digital course, Trust But Verify: The Childcare Interview Process.

Passive income is a must when we are building our businesses because it allows us to intentionally divide our time between in person clients and working on our business, creating more free time and income coming in that we aren't trading time for.

All it took was one client sharing her method for choosing childcare that made Jen realize there was a huge need for PI expertise in her client community. Throughout the episode, Jen emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making and the creation of resources that empower parents.

Private Eye Parent was designed to equip families with the tools to conduct thorough interviews for childcare, ultimately aiming to reduce anxiety and enhance peace of mind, staying right in line with exactly what doulas do.

In this episode of the Birth Boss podcast, I'm sitting down with with Hilary Melchiors, owner of the Doula Group of Evansville, and fun fact, the only certified postpartum doula in a 75 mile radius of her! This brings up some differences in the way we started and currently run our agencies, which is somewhat dependent on our geographical location, which turned into a highlighting a huge benefit of agencies that is rarely talked about... providing sustainability for doulas.

We discuss how being a doula has evolved over the years and how now, with insurance coverage and employer benefits, the importance of certification is more apparent now than ever before. This brings up the a deeper conversation about the need for better doula training and community building within our profession and why collaboration over competition wins every time.

In this episode I emphasizes the importance of not only recognizing, but normalizing entrepreneurship within the doula profession. I share a little bit about my personal journey from being a doula to establishing an agency, highlighting the significance of viewing myself as a business owner from early on, and not "just a doula".

Throughout this episode I highlight the need for continuous learning, setting business goals, and investing in both personal and professional development, which led me into the reasons I created (and curated!) the Birth Boss CEO Summit, an event aimed at empowering doulas to embrace their entrepreneurial spirit and build successful businesses that align with their lifestyles.

In this episode, I am chatting with Ananda Lowe, owner of the Boston Doula Circle agency, about her journey of transitioning from a solo doula practice to an agency model.

First we discuss the benefits of buying an established agency versus starting from scratch and then go into detail about the importance of organization and putting together the right team. It's crucial to focus, of course, on doula skills, but also recognize what other things they can bring into your agency. Building your admin team from within, most times, makes the most sense.

Next we go into the challenges of rebranding and navigating the business purchase process. Ananda shares her experiences and insights on agency ownership, emphasizing the need for effective communication within the business and the value of working with a variety of professionals to get the results your looking for... the ones that align and represent your brand exactly the way you envision.

A recurring theme in this conversation is the importance of building a close network of trusted people that understand and support the nuances of agency ownership. Throughout the episode we also touch on the financial health of our businesses and why you can never lose sight of knowing your worth as the owner.

In this episode I talk all about the transformative power of in-person events!

I love the unique energy and engagement that comes from face to face interactions and it's impossible to recreate those virtually. That's not to say that virtual events can't be amazing, because they can, but nothing compares to having your community within arms reach.

I also share the story of how the Birth Boss Society was created, which was to fill the big gap in community and education for high-caliber doula business owners and how, from that, came the Birth Boss CEO Summit, a 3 day transformative event, live in Boston April 5-7.

I can't wait for the deep personal connections, meaningful relationship building, rich engagement and the unmatchable energy that will be felt from everyone that attends.

In this episode I am chatting with RN, IBCLC and entrepreneur Leslie Owens about her journey into the field, the importance of lactation support, and the need for more professionals in this area. We discuss the challenges faced by new parents, the benefits of breastfeeding, and the role of education and mentorship in becoming a lactation consultant, which is no easy feat... unless you have Leslie to help!

Leslie shares how she created her program from her own journey of becoming an IBCLC and how she designed it to make the path to becoming an IBCLC more accessible for everyone. We also discuss how it expanded her business and brings in passive income.

We talk about the importance of finding time freedom and flexibility in our business practices, emphasizing the need for intentional family time and sustainable business models. In this episode, I finally get to share the details on the Birth Boss CEO Summit, a 3 event designed for birth professionals to enhance their business and personal growth. I designed the summit to focus on key areas such as financial planning, business expansion, and personal lifestyle management, three important pieces of the business owner puzzle.

The Birth Boss CEO Summit came about because I was looking for an event to attend that focused not only on the logistics of building and scaling my business, but also cultivating community and designing the lifestyle I wanted for myself as the CEO. It was also important to me as a doula agency owner to have a time solely focused on that particular business structure and the unique aspects it brings, so in addition to the 2 day main event, the 3rd day will be exclusively for agency owners.

The Birth Boss CEO Summit will take place April 5-7, 2025 in Boston, with a very limited number of seats available.

In this episode I am chatting with Kristin Revere, doula agency owner, author, podcast host and educator. Over the conversation , Kristin talks about the moves she has made to get to where she is now, sole owner of Gold Coast Doula Agency. She started in a collective, then moved into a partnership, but ultimately decided being a sole owner fit her lifestyle and goals the best.

We realized quite a few times in this chat that we run our businesses in a very similar fashion... the way we prioritize tasks, dedicate time to our clients and schedule in breaks that we need. Those are our keys to success!

Big takeaway: You don't ever have to be stuck in one place if it doesn't serve you well. The ultimate goal is to build a business that brings us true joy, allows us to live the life we dream of and affords us the freedom to intentionally divide our time between business and personal/family. Oh yeah, and grow our bank accounts too!
No matter where you are in life or business, it's never too late to make moves!

It’s my favorite time of year!

I absolutely love looking back at the past year and analyzing every part of my business and then looking forward to next year and setting goals.

It’s important to create different categories for your analysis. I would start with growth in terms of your email list, Instagram followers, members of your private groups, etc. Then I would move over to basic numbers like gross revenue, net revenue, and then figure out your profit margins. I would list out all of your offers and services and see which one performed best, which was the worst and then hopefully it aligns with which you love the most and which drain your energy.

Now looking forward to 2025, it’s time to make appropriate adjustments! Set realistic goals for yourself based on the different categories of years past and take into consideration anything that you are adding or taking away. The things that are your best sellers, ask yourself if they need any updating and then plan for that. You also need to figure out if you are adding anything new and if so, will add more work to your week or will you be delegating to someone else so you stay within the boundaries of the time you want to commit to working. Now it’s time to set your schedule!

To be able to go more in depth with you, I am hosting a free 2025 Strategic Planning workshop Tuesday December 17 at 1pm EST. To register, click here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMlf--pqD8tE9KNRGsVar7jhVidoTRlfTad

In this episode I am counting down the top 10 things I do in my life and business to stay happy!

10 Recognize your importance- You're ALL the things... CEO, COO, CFO, MVP, VIP... you get it. Treat yourself as such.

9 Be extremely picky- Choose clients and colleagues wisely. If they don't align with how you operate, say no.

8 Have a biz bestie- have someone you can count on and that can count on you to talk business, set goals and be each other's biggest cheerleader.

7 CEO day- take one day each week to work ON your business, not IN it, and use that time to focus on long term goals and projects, things that will grow your business, increase revenue and broaden your impact.

6 Have clear boundaries- say NO often.

5 Find a schedule that works for you- design your schedule so that you have ample time for your personal life in addition to your business obligations.

4 Mini self care- take time to care for yourself in small, but frequent, ways.

3 Love your workspace- create an office space that makes you happy, which in turn will increase productivity.

2 Plan for food- dedicate time in your work day to slow down and have a healthy and hearty meal. It will feed your busy and mind!

1 Be productive, not just busy- make sure that you are intentionally working to check off the boxes and finish important items on your to do list.

In this episode, I talk you through setting goals for yourself and making long-term plans... and then taking that big goal, reverse engineering it to figure out exactly what you’re going to need, the skills you will have to learn, and potentially who is going to help you along the way to achieve the magic.

Think about where you are in your business right now and what your big goal is. It probably looks significantly different than what you’re doing now, which is exactly what you want! Eventually, as your business grows, you grow as the business owner! You become the CEO, COO, CFO, MVP and obviously the VIP. It’s really important to prepare for that because you will not be the same person that you are right now.

Thinking and dreaming about what you want your business to look like and what your life will be like as the owner, you definitely want to make a list of the things that you should know or will need to know to make all of those dreams come true. You don’t want to be a fly by the seat of your pants leader! It’s not the time to fake it til you make it. There’s a time in a place for that, but not when you’re running a multi six or seven figure business!

In this episode, Kaely Harrod and I talk (at length!) about preventing burnout, but its not the conversation that you're used to.

We of course, recognize that burnout is a real threat in our industry. The statistics of doulas who start their businesses and end up doing something else is staggeringly high. Being a doula is not easy! It is physically taxing, as well as mentally and emotionally draining sometimes, and the long hours and late nights can easily take a toll on you.

So the question is, how do we prevent that from the start? How do we build a business that never allows us to work more hours than we want to, putting us at risk of not being able to take the best care of ourselves and keep our health and wellness a priority?

This episode is rich with tips, tricks and strategy to stay on a path of growth while balancing the lifestyle that you want for yourself and your family.

It’s not hard, but it definitely takes some planning!!

Let's talk about a big shift that can take your doula career to new heights: transitioning from being a solo doula to owning your own agency. It's not just a change in title; it's a transformation of mindset and strategy.

In this episode, I'll tell you all about how I have been in your shoes, pouring my heart into every client and wondering how I could do even more. But it's not just expanding your business or about bringing on more doulas; it's about shifting the way you market, talk about your business, and step into a management role.

I will share how you can serve more families, impact more lives, and build a legacy. It's about empowering other doulas to shine while you focus on the big picture... and the back end. It's about embracing growth without the overwhelm.

In my journey from solo doula to agency owner, I have had many wins and also many losses. It was a few years of trial and error and sometimes it felt like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something would stick. But out of that crazy, but amazing time, I built the thriving business that I run today. I also created a program that takes solo doulas to agency owners with a "done for you" model of logistics, education and tons of support, plus 12 months of guidance as you enter the growth and scaling stage. In the Hip to Heart Birth Boss® Agency program, I'll guide you through building your foundation, making these important mindset shifts and I'll show you how to thrive as an agency owner.

In this episode I will be busting the top 3 myths about digital courses!

Myth #1: It’s difficult to create a digital course.

It’s not! All you need is the knowledge, passion and a computer or phone with a good camera and a microphone. As you get going and start creating revenue, you can reinvest that into some better equiptment.

As far as the curriculum itself, stay organized with your thoughts and write everything out in detail. You also want to make sure you are covering all ways of learning with different tools. Then find perfect platform, add your graphics and descriptions and you're ready to roll. Well... that's the abbreviated version, but you get it.

Myth #2: The market is saturated.

It’s not! There is such a need for digital education! Self paced courses are what a lot of our clients want. It also allows you a much bigger reach and you get to educate way more people. whatever topics your expertise is, it doesn't have to be only for the perinatal community. You can capture your birth professionals community as well! (ask me how!)

Myth #3: You can set it and forget it.

You cannot! At least not if you want to sell it.

You need to figure out a launch plan, marketing, sales and how you're going to nurture your audience.

Digital courses are worth the time and financial investment because the return on both of those are incredible! Passive income allows you to build your business without the threat of burnout and can afford you the time and financial freedom to continue to grow and scale sustainably.

Building a foundation for a sustainable doula business means thinking bigger and working smarter!

In this episode, I tell you my favorite and most effective ways to continue to grow your practice while gaining back your time...

Tip #1: Systems that Save Time.
Implement systems that handle the repetitive tasks. Let automation take the wheel on scheduling, client follow-ups, and more.

Tip 2: 1 to Many Offers.
Expand beyond one-on-one sessions with workshops, group sessions, and online courses that let you reach more clients without adding hours to your day.

Tip #3: Passive Income Streams!
Develop digital products like e-books or pre-recorded classes. These resources help families while boosting your income, 24/7.

Tip #4: Effective Delegation!
Build a team or outsource tasks. Delegating administrative duties or certain client services allows you to focus on what you do best.

Every step you take towards these goals not only enhances your business's resilience but also enriches your personal life. More clients, more income, more free time—it’s all within reach with the right foundation.

In this episode, I am diving deep into the world of doula communities and why they're so important for birthworkers. They are the true backbone of what we do.

I share some insights from my time in the bustling Boston doula scene, where collaboration trumps competition every day. I am so lucky that we're all about building each other up and creating a strong support system for everyone involved.

Now, let's chat about the different roles within these communities. Whether you're a seasoned leader, a new kid on the block, or somewhere in between, active participation is key. It's all about giving and receiving support to help us grow both personally and professionally.

For those just dipping their toes into the doula world, I've got some tips on how to get involved. From hitting up social media to rubbing elbows at networking events, there are plenty of ways to plug into your local community and soak up that collective wisdom.

I also highlight the importance of community for our mental and emotional well-being. Let's face it, birthwork can be tough, so having a crew to lean on is crucial for staying resilient and avoiding burnout.

As we wrap things up, I'm throwing out a challenge to all you listeners: think about how you can contribute to making your doula community even stronger. Whether it's lending a helping hand, sharing your experiences, or just showing up, every little bit counts.

In this episode, I will be discussing finances with Jen Reid, owner of Base Planning and creator of the amazing Great With Money course.

Money might not be the most comfortable topic, especially when it involves our own businesses, but it's absolutely necessary for our growth and stability. I've often heard from fellow doulas about the struggle to pay themselves consistently. If this sounds like you, you're certainly not alone in facing this challenge.

The next steps after paying yourself might be reinvesting in your business, paying off debt, saving for retirement, investing... the list goes on. But it is doable, I promise! There was a time where I didn't pay myself either, but now, after working with Jen and learning more about responsible and sustainable financial planning, I've created the perfect plan to keep my finances healthy, and more importantly, organized.

Jen, understanding the financial obstacles small business owners encounter, has tailored a solution. She’s developed a group coaching program specifically designed to demystify finances for entrepreneurs like us. It’s focused on education, organization, and empowerment around your finances, fostering a healthy relationship with money, and laying the foundation for both business expansion and personal financial freedom.

It’s time to shift from financial uncertainty to being in control of your financial destiny!

Listen in and get started on building that brighter, financially secure future for your business and yourself.

In this episode I sat down with Maranda Bower, founder of Postpartum University, and we talked about how sometimes saying No to things means saying Yes to yourself.

In the busy every day life of moms who are also entrepreneurs, it's entirely too easy to get in the habit of spreading yourself too thin. Between caring for family and business, both of which have significant importance, we often put our needs last. We lose sight of the fact that our needs should be put first... that's what we tell our postpartum doula clients, right? But how can we prioritize our own health and well being while making sure everyone else's needs are taken care of?

The answer is simple.
Learn now to say no.
Learn how to set clear boundaries.
Learn from Maranda.

Maranda shares the tips and tricks that she has learned over the years that have made it easy for her to have it all. She tells us how she simultaneously grew her family and her business, is now a full time student, yet feels like she hasn't had to sacrifice anything that's important to her along the way.

She is nothing short of inspiring!

In this episode I sit down with with Anna Rodney, owner of Chicago Family Doulas, a thriving doula agency in Chicago, creator of Birth and Baby University and also a fellow member of the CAPPA faculty, to talk about how our doula agencies are the true back bone of our businesses.

Anna and I talk about the importance of using the time and financial freedom our agencies afford us to step back, plan growth and ultimately achieve any goals we set. In this specific chat were focus on digital courses.

Digital courses have been a game changer for sure, not only to our business growth, but to our clients as well. With these self paced courses we can educate a much broader audience, which is a dream come true. Anna went one step further and took the course that she created and made it a template so other educators can easily use it for their own businesses. So now educators can easily get out there and teach, creating increased revenue for themselves and also getting the important information to their perinatal community. Win Win!

Transitioning from being a solo doula to owning your own agency isn't just a step up in your career, it's a complete transformation in how you think and operate.

In this episode I will talk about how the journey is about more than a change in your professional title , it's about evolving your mindset and strategy to reach new levels of success.

I've been where you are as an overly committed solo doula, giving my all to each client and constantly wondering how I could extend my impact even further. The answer became clear when I made the leap from a solo doula to an agency owner.

For me, the change was about realizing the potential to serve more families, create a greater impact, and build something that lasts. It was about enabling other doulas to excel while you focus on steering the ship. It was about growing a business ambitiously, yet sustainably.

As we embrace the new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we can not only work harder but more importantly, work smarter.

2024 is all about maximizing efficiency, leveraging opportunities, and making strategic decisions that propel our growth.

In this episode, I'll be sharing how to make this year is your most productive yet by focusing on three key strategies:

Seek Additional Revenue, Not Just Savings: Instead of pinching pennies, let’s explore innovative ways to boost income. Diversify your revenue streams to complement your current business model. It’s about creating wealth, not just conserving it.

Choose Scalable Work: Be selective with the projects you take on. Aim for tasks that offer not just immediate returns but also the potential for growth. It’s about building a foundation that can expand and evolve with your business, ensuring longevity and sustainability.

Invest in Yourself and Find a Mentor: The path to success is often smoother with guidance. Seek out a mentor who has walked the path you’re on and reached the heights you aspire to. Their experience and insights can be invaluable, offering you shortcuts to success and helping you avoid common pitfalls.

Let’s make 2024 the year where we work smarter, grow our businesses strategically, and reach new heights of success!

As doulas, our journey is unique! It is filled with compassion, challenges, and continuous growth.

Like the families we support, we also have aspirations and dreams. As we step into 2024, it's time to transform these dreams into tangible goals, making our doula businesses not just a source of income, but a beacon of inspiration and balance in our lives.

In this episode I will talk about:

💰 Elevating Your Earnings: Increase your financial stability this year. Set specific income goals to reflect your worth and hard work. Every extra dollar is a step towards your bigger picture.

🌍 Maximizing Community Impact: Aim to make a significant difference in your community. Whether through workshops, support groups, or personal sessions, strive to touch more lives.

⚖️ Balancing Your Lifestyle: Juggle personal life and a thriving business. Set goals for a harmony that nurtures both. A happy, well-balanced doula creates a positive ripple effect.

🤝 Mastering the Art of Delegation: Learn to delegate effectively. It can free up time, allowing you to focus on empowering parents and their newborns.

👥 Strengthening Your Team: Invest in a solid support system. A reliable team can transform your operations and enhance client experiences.

🧘‍♀️ Prioritizing Self-Care: Burnout is real in our field. Make self-care a priority for sustained passion and energy.

🧭 Setting Powerful Intentions: Align your business objectives with your personal values. Let these intentions guide your actions and decisions.

My New Years wish for you... Taking all of these goals, setting your sights high and soaring into incredible success!

There are so many different ways to invest in your business, which in essence, is investing in yourself.

You can invest small amounts, which give you a return on investment in terms of more time. That extra time can be spent working on other things in your business or spending it doing something you live that has nothing to do with business.

A slightly larger monetary (and time!) investment might be an additional course or training that will either add another service to your business or enhance something that you’re currently doing. The return on that investment can be pretty quick but you also have to think about what does the time commitment look like and if it’s an in person hands on commitment, how will that fit into your current schedule.

When you’re looking forward to the future of your business, ways to invest, would be programs that help you build a solid foundation and get systems in place, so you can easily grow and scale in the future. The return on those investments might take a little bit longer, but are absolutely worth it because you’re thinking long term.

The investments you make should be a mix of short and long term return.

If you’re looking to make a total transformation in your business, then most likely, you will be investing a much larger amount of both money and time. The return on those investments tend to be quicker because you’re making a total shift in your business and building upon systems that you already have in place. The larger investments for growth are perfect for the business owner that is fairly established and at capacity with what you’re currently doing.

When I started my doula agency, I didn't know what I was doing. I made a lot of mistakes, and those mistakes cost me time and money.

I needed this to work for me because I didn't want to go back to my corporate job, and I wanted to have control of my time so I could not only help postpartum families, which is something I am passionate about, but so I could be home for my family.

But, all the mistakes, struggles, frustration, and even tears got me to a place where I now have a business that is on track to hit 7 figures in 2023, and most importantly, I have a balance between life and work.

I want this for you!

As a birth or postpartum doula, you have an infinite amount of clients. People are always having babies!

So it truly saddens me when I see doulas who have the mindset that they can't get clients, they have to take more courses in order to get clients, or you have to offer a million different services.

The truth is, you can get clients without having to take more courses or offer a ton of services. All it takes is just being consistent, confident, creative, and authentic.

You need to focus on your strengths instead of feeling like you have to be a jack of all trades in order to get clients. What are your strengths? Think about what makes you unique and why clients should choose you as their doula.

Once you identify your strengths, use them to market yourself in a creative way. There are so many different ways to market yourself and your services, you just need to find the ones that work for YOU. This could be through word-of-mouth referrals, networking events, online advertising, etc.

The final step is to be confident in your services and don’t be afraid to ask for what you are worth. When you have confidence in yourself, your clients will too and they’ll be sure to come to you over any other doula.

So don’t be discouraged, if you want to be a successful doula, a simple mindset shift can make a huge difference.

The secret sauce is doing all of this and adding in an abundance mindset.

If you’re a high caliber doula who is at capacity with private clients, this episode is for you💚

**After I took my postpartum doula training, it took me a little while to navigate what hours worked for me and to figure out what I needed to take home in order to make things work. Which quickly led me to realize that it was a larger number of hours each week then I really wanted to be working.

But I wanted to care for lots of clients AND make a lot of money.**

The setbacks for me were the apparent glass ceiling that I knew was there if I continued to only do hourly work, which in the birth and postpartum industry can be hard to navigate. So I made the commitment that during my downtime, I'd start researching and thinking about what else I could bring into my business that could create revenue but not necessarily take up more of my time.

I became a Postpartum Doula trainer and started to hustle with the marketing in order to build that side of my business, and even though it was a slow start, I knew that it was something that I would make work. I’m a hustler by nature and if I set out to do something, I will not just get it done, but I will absolutely go over and above to make it happen.

I went from not knowing what a doula even was, to now owning a multi six figure business that helps not only birth professionals, but postpartum parents as well. But through it all, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about hard work, but is also about having a strategy and dedication to making it happen.

If you’re saying THAT IS ME then you NEED to listen to this episode and apply to the The Agency Masterclass so you can have total alignment in your WORK, LIFE and BANK ACCOUNT .

Having a sustainable doula business that lights you up starts with having systems in place.

I know, it sounds weird, but with systems in place, (especially from the beginning) means you spend less time focusing on the business end of things and more time working with clients, which I know is what you're passionate about.

Three ways that I recommend to ensure your business is sustainable are:

1️⃣ Lifestyle Mapping

2️⃣ Setting Goals

3️⃣ Passive Income

I know, when you hear the word "systems," you think of things like Dubsado, right? Which, yes, those systems are super important as well, but today I'm referring to systems that you have in place to live the life you want while running the business that you love.

Lifestyle Mapping is all about understanding your ideal lifestyle and mapping out what steps you need to take to achieve it. Everyone's dream lifestyle looks different, so it's important to be intentional about mapping out what yours looks like. This will keep you motivated and on track with achieving the life that you want to live and having the business that supports it.

Goal setting is another important system to have in place. This involves understanding why you are running your business, and what outcomes you hope to achieve. When you have clarity on the why, it's much easier to set goals that will help you reach your outcome.

This will help you better focus your energy and design strategies that make sense in achieving your goals.

Finally, setting up a passive income system should be one of your priorities. This includes creating digital products and services, online courses and masterminds, or anything else that you can offer that will help you create income while doing less work.

When you have systems in place that help you create the lifestyle of your dreams and supports a sustainable doula business, you can truly thrive.

💚 I can make it easier for you to take action and start growing the sustainable business you need. Check out the link below for The Agency Master class application .

When it comes to managing your doula agency's finances, having the right tools can make all the difference.

Let's talk about the game-changer that transformed my business finances and paved the way for my agency's success: QuickBooks Online.

Why is QuickBooks Online the superior choice?

Well, it's not just me who thinks so. Almost all accountants swear by it, and for good reason. This software simplifies bookkeeping tasks, expense tracking, and generating insightful financial reports. With its user-friendly interface, I can effortlessly stay organized and make informed decisions.

But here's where the magic truly happens...

Let me introduce you to Stowe Bookkeeping LLC, my trusted partner on this financial journey. Jennie has been instrumental in helping me navigate the intricacies of business finances. It's like having a wise mentor guiding me through the numbers, simplifying complex concepts, and ensuring I stay on the path to success.

Stowe Bookkeeping LLC offers an incredible course specifically tailored to doula entrepreneurs like us. This course walks you through setting up QuickBooks Online for your business, providing step-by-step guidance and invaluable insights. With Jennie's support, I learned how to keep my bookkeeping up to date, gaining the financial clarity I needed to propel my agency forward.

So, my friend, only the best for a Birth Boss.

You are hearing those words all the time, right?!?! You know it sounds good but you don’t know how to get in on it…

If you need some hand holding grab mine.

Having passive income in your business is not as simple as “create and wait” like you are lead to believe. There is a very intentional process that needs to be mapped out in order for you to have success with it. Design conception, curriculum creation, offer clarification just to name a few. You will need to know who your ideal audience is, what your course will promise and how to make sure your email list stays interested. Then you still need to market that course, nurture that audience and finally LAUNCH!

Like I said, you may need some hand holding… but don’t let this overwhelm you. Your doula business needs passive income… and you WANT it!

As a birth or postpartum doula, you have an infinite amount of clients. People are always having babies! So it truly saddens me when I see doulas who have the mindset that they can't get clients, they have to take more courses in order to get clients, or you have to offer 50 million different services. This mentality is so negative and comes from how we are taught as new doulas. The truth is, you can get clients without having to take more courses or offer a ton of services. All it takes is just being consistent, confident, creative, and authentic. You need to focus on your strengths instead of feeling like you have to be a jack of all trades in order to get clients. What are your strengths? Think about what makes you unique and why clients should choose you as their doula.Once you identify your strengths, use them to market yourself in a creative way. There are so many different ways to market yourself and your services, you just need to find the ones that work for YOU. This could be through word-of-mouth referrals, networking events, online advertising, etc.The final step is to be confident in your services and don’t be afraid to ask for what you are worth. When you have confidence in yourself, your clients will too and they’ll be sure to come to you over any other doula. So don’t be discouraged, if you want to be a successful doula, a simple mindset shift can make a huge difference. The secret sauce is doing all of this and adding in an abundance mindset. And if you're already there, and you're ready to take it to the next level, click the link below to apply to the Transition to Agency Masterclass.

Seems crazy right? Caring for MORE clients by working LESS...

Actually, it is totally possibly if you work smarter... which is exactly what this episode teaches you.

Three things you can start to think about are:

  • Streamlining to one to three main things that all ultimately serve the same client

  • Not choosing all offers/services that require in person hourly care or education.  Examples are digital courses, becoming an affiliate, virtual classes, products, memberships and starting a doula agency

  • Figure out a good balance of what gives you the best ROI (return on investment) of your time and money.

I hear these excuses all the time....

❌ I don't have enough time

❌ It's too much money

❌ I can’t step away from clients right now

❌ I don’t want to manage people

❌ I don’t want others representing my business

I'm going to give you some tough love.... these are all excuses that are holding you back. Holding you back from having more time, from having a work life balance, from making the type of money that you want to make.

The truth is that you're afraid of succeeding and taking on a larger, more important role in business. So instead, you're continuing to work a crazy amount of hours, you're burning yourself out, you can't plan for the future, and there isn't even enough time to work on your business.

But why???

Now is the time to change this. There is a demand for doulas because parents are missing the support and village that used to be there for them during pregnancy and birth.

So what are you waiting for? Let's change your story, give you back time, make you more money, and help you help more families.

The Agency Masterclass was created to help you get up and running with no wasted time or resources. Click the link below to apply! The next cohort starts May 9 💚

Doulas are experiencing burn out at an alarming rate.

The standard business model of working at an hourly rate is causing doulas to work way too many hours in order to be able to sustain their lifestyles.

Unfortunately, this puts doulas at risk of burn out due to the physical and emotional labor required as part of the job. Burnout can lead to exhaustion, overwhelm, a decreased ability to perform at your best or even physical illness.

Solely focusing on clients, and not creating other streams of revenue in your doula business means you will never LEVEL UP!

In this episode I will talk about how you can do this in a multitude of ways, but before you even start, you need to take a step back and look at the whole picture. This type of business isn't about quantity, but about quality. You need to work smarter, not harder in order to accomplish the things that you want and need in a shorter amount of time in order to reap more benefits.

At the end of the day, it is important to remember that creating multiple streams of income as a doula does not have to be an all-or-nothing game. Small changes can create big shifts in your business, setting you up for a more sustainable and successful future.

When you become a doula, you learn how to take care of pregnant, birthing, and postpartum parents, but you don't necessarily learn the ins and outs of business. Sure, some trainings include business classes, but they are usually a one size fits all approach, which unfortunately doesn't work for everyone.

But the truth is that as a doula, you need to have a good handle on business basics in order to make sure your practice is successful. You need to understand the different types of business models so you can pick one that is right for your lifestyle, know something about marketing, and build multiple streams of income. No to mention the importance of learning the basics of financial planning and budgeting so you can manage your finances responsibly.

In this episode I'll share some important tips to setting yourself and your business up for long term success!

When you think about starting your birth or post part of business are you focused on the care that you’re going to provide or are you also thinking about building a solid foundation for your business that will evolve with you as your business grows?

It’s important to think about the services you were going to offer and your business and how you were going to handle that expansion. What do you need to make to survive, but also to thrive? The answers to those questions take some strategic planning.

When setting up your business early on, some additional things to think about are planning for retirement, saving for education and also investing. It might seem like a huge undertaking, but even if you do it little by little it adds up!

AND passive income! We can’t forget passive income 😂

A few years back, The Doula Darcy and I connected and through conversation had an AH-HAH moment of how incredible it would be to have these conferences that other professions did on a regular basis. Through that conversation, The Birth Boss Summit was born.

It can be so easy in the birth professional world to become consumed with which training we should do next: birth doula, postpartum doula, childbirth, etc…, that we end up forgetting about the business side of things, and how incredibly important it is. You could be the greatest doula in the world. But if you don’t take the time to figure out how to run a business and how to network and market. It’s likely you won’t last very long because you’ll get stuck spinning your wheels until you’re stuck and burnt out.

This is where The Birth Boss Summit comes in. We have an arrangement of different speakers, coming to join us and share about different ways to manage, grow, and market your business. It is going to be SO good, and we can’t wait for you to join us.

You can join here → thebirthbosssummit.com

Here are our guest speakers:

→ Darcy Sauers, Doula Darcy: Blogging to Grow Your Audience

→ Jennie Stowe, Stow Bookkeeping: Knowing your Numbers: The Importance of Bookkeeping

→ Kyleigh Banks, AutonomyMommy: Creating Online Courses for Total Financial Freedom

→ Alyssa Johnson: Power of Podcasting

→ Nichole Joy: Healing Yourself for Your Business

→ Brandi Jordan, The Cradle Company: Money Mindset

Your contract is one of the most important things to have prepared within your business. Before you even start taking clients, you want to make sure you have a solid contract in place because the clients will come, and you want to be ready when they do.

I’m going to cover some of the most essential things to include within your contract and fill you in on why it’s so important to always have a contract when you are providing any service for a client. Your contract gives you a solid foundation and framework for your business.

A contract outlines your business on paper and is a foundational part of setting up a successful business. It gives your clients clear expectations on what they can expect from you as a provider, and also gives them clear expectations on what you expect from them throughout the time working together.

Be sure to have a notebook handy during this episode so you can take notes! Reach out if you have any questions!

As business owners, it can be so easy to forget to give ourselves the amount of care that we need. The way we are caring for ourselves, directly affects how we are able to show up as caregivers. Both within our families and our business.

The most important thing we can do for ourselves, and for our business is be on our A-game. While it’s not realistic to ALWAYS be on our A-game, we want to be as much as we are able, and that really comes down to taking the absolute best care of ourselves. In this episode, I am going to grant you permission to take good care of yourself, and reinforce why this is so important to your health, and the health of your business.

We share about this within the episode too, be sure to come listen in! You don’t want to miss out.
