Your first source for UNvarnished, politically-INcorrect information about how to launch a startup and manage a profitable small business!
Podcast host, Randal Wimmer, is a serial entrepreneur who has stepped on EVERY landmine in the startup minefield, at least once and some of them more times than he cares to admit! However, these hard-learned lessons were instrumental to his success.
Randal's companies have made hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, been listed on both the INC 500 Fastest Growing Companies List and the Washington Tech Fast 50 List on multiple occassions, and culminated in successful market exits. Randal is also the author of the Amazon Bestselling book, GOOD ENOUGH! To Launch Your Company. (Author website: RandalWimmer.com )
Presently, Randal is helping aspiring entrepreneurs launch successful companies. He helps people avoid the "franchise trap" by providing entrepreneurs with franchising alternatives with all the benefits of a franchise and none of the royalties, constraints, and hassle. ( ReadyforRevenue.com ) He helps GovCon companies rapidly grow in the FedGov contracting space. ( GovernmentContractingAcademy.com ) Plus, he helps startups and small businesses obtain the corporate credentials to achieve market penetration and rapidly grow. (ISOCertificationGroup.com )
Most aspiring entrepreneurs fail not because they lack talent or drive, but because their business plan fails them. Instead of a strategic roadmap built for their specific vision, they fill out a generic template that resembles a form more than a plan. Randal Wimmer — Navy veteran, serial entrepreneur, and author of Good Enough! to Launch Your Company — proposes a different approach. One that significantly improves your probability of startup success.
In this seven-episode podcast series, Randal walks you through the DADDEE Framework — a proven six-phase methodology he developed in the Navy and refined across a career launching and leading companies to the Inc. 500 and Washington Technology Fast 50. Dream. Analysis. Define. Develop. Execute. Evaluate. Six phases that transform the most intimidating business challenges into clear, actionable steps.
No generic advice. No "politically correct" platitudes. No one-size-fits-all templates. Just a battle-tested framework built to turn your dream into a thriving business.

It's an obvious cliche, but that does not make it true. Sitting in the corner office as your company's founder and CEO is a very lonely position. You're there to help your employees stay focused on the mission, but who is helping you stay focused on the things that only you can do? Nobody. You must do it yourself. But how? Listen to how I overcame this frequently ignored challenge of creating forcing mechanisms to hold myself accountability as the leader of my organizations. To be a successful entrepreneur, you must master this skill!

During GCA's Free Proposal Writing Bootcamp (you can register/watch recordings here: https://www.crowdcast.io/@businessgrowth ) an attendee asked me how any small business could afford to pursue corporate differentiators. My answer made me feel bad, but I committed to give her honesty rather than a rosy-colored deceit.
There are 140,000+ small businesses registered to do work in the Federal Government industry. As a startup, you have very limited number of ways to stand out in this crowd. By definition, you lack historical references and past performances. Even worse, your startup exemplifies this industries most common belief: All small businesses are inherently risky.
I shared a brutal truth that will either:
or...
Nearly every entrepreneur needs this nudge. I did. And, thankfully, my father-in-law provided it.
Hopefully, this will be a nudge to get you on your way to successful small business ownership!

The ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management System framework provides a clear roadmap for governing AI systems in a way that both commercial and government customers increasingly expect. For solution providers, this represents not only a strategic differentiator—but also a new service opportunity.
Through The ISO Certification Group, we offer an AI Governance-in-a-Box solution that completes approximately 99% of the work required to achieve:
Certified Compliance in ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management System by an ISO Accredited third-party, and
ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification, which is a foundational prerequisite for ISO/IEC 42001.
These credentials place your firm in the top 0.1% of your competitive field, clearly demonstrating:
Your ability to develop and implement AI systems responsibly
Your organizational maturity and delivery discipline
Your readiness to operate in regulated, high-risk environments such as healthcare
More importantly, ISO/IEC 42001 enables you to offer AI governance and management systems as a separate, value-added deliverable to your clients—helping them govern the AI systems you deploy while creating a new revenue opportunity beyond implementation alone.
Once again, we do nearly all of the heavy lifting, allowing your team to focus on delivery, growth, and client relationships rather than building governance frameworks from scratch.
If you would like to explore whether AI Governance-in-a-Box is right for your firm—and how it can strengthen both your market position and service offerings—I invite you to schedule time with me directly:

Artificial intelligence is everywhere—but customers are no longer impressed by capability alone. They’re asking a far more important question:
Is this AI solution appropriate for my use case?
In this episode, we break down Verification, Validation, and Accreditation (VV&A) and why it has become a critical standard for evaluating modern tech solutions, particularly AI-enhanced systems used in high-consequence environments like government, defense, healthcare, and regulated industries.
We explore:
As AI increasingly influences operational, financial, and life-impacting decisions, credibility—not novelty—has become the differentiator. This conversation explains why organizations that understand and apply VV&A principles will win trust, contracts, and long-term adoption—while others struggle to defend their technology choices.
Whether you’re a technology provider, government buyer, program manager, or executive navigating AI integration, this episode will change how you think about what it means for a solution to be “ready” for real-world use.

Over the past two decades, I've launched led and sold multiple GovCon companies and during this time, I've discovered that every struggling small business in the GovCon market space...is struggling because of one or more of the SAME ten mistakes.
Here they are…
•They don't address the assumption that everybody in the GovCon industry makes…and that is that they’re risky to work with just because they’re a small business
•They "fish from the same pier as everybody else" instead of pursing markets where billions of dollars in small business earmarks are left on the table because they can't find enough qualified small businesses to give it to
•They skip creating Account Plans to develop strategies regarding how to best sell their services to specific agencies and organizations.
•They don't differentiate their company form the 140,000+ small businesses in the GovCon industry…so they're never noticed! This is especially true when they lack impressive past performances!
•They don't know how to maximize their bid scores…believing the "best company" wins and not the highest scored proposal.
•They don't focus on profit, so they only make what they bid. Successful companies bid one price and manage to another one!
•They focus on level of effort tasks that make them feel good about making progress…and not the "uncomfortable" tasks that grow their business
•They don't effectively market their company to the 40,000 PLUS business development executives at large GovCon companies…who can completely change their lives
•They don’t “connect the dots” to show value in their proposals because they don’t use a TEMPLATE Approach
•They never take the plunge to start their company because of their fear of failure…and never know success

Artificial Intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies of our age. It is a force-multiplier… an accelerant…a gamechanger. It will help you achieve your wildest dreams if you successfully harness its power.
On the other hand. Whatever you knew before. Whatever you did before to be successful, here's a good chance that it is now obsolete.
Business as usual means...out of business.
The Government Contracting industry is no longer "business as usual." AI has completely changed the proposal writing game. Now, a one-person company that knows how to effectively employ AI can perform the same manpower intensive proposal writing activities that could only be previously performed by a large company.
Just like Netflix and Blockbuster had to choose between embracing the internet or not, you must choose between leveraging the vast power of AI...or be left behind. If you want to learn more, please register for our upcoming webinar. Registration links are at GCACampus.com

Here it is...The Holy Grail of Small Business Set Aside STRATEGIES for consistent and rapid growth! Although it took me many, MANY years to figure it out...the strategy is remarkably simple and intuitive.
1. Find Markets Where Your Set Aside is Under-represented (And there are MANY of them...just check the SBA Small Business Utilization Scorecard for each FedGov Agency for your specific set aside.
2. Differentiate your company from the limited competitive field by obtaining Corporate Credentials, such as ISO Certification and CMMI Appraisal. These corporate credentials will immediately place your company in the Top 1% of your competitors...and project your company as the low risk, mature bidder to win more bids!

Many small business bidders don't really know how proposals are ACTUALLY SCORED. They read the Statement of Work (SOW) or Performance Work Statement (PWS) in the Request for Proposal (RFP) and their eyes get really big. WE CAN DO THIS! Then they write, what I call, an "I love me" proposal, stating how great they are at doing what was stated in the proposal.
In this euphoria, they never consider how their proposal is going to be scored. As such, they have ZERO concept that RISK is literally HALF of their Combined Technical/Risk Rating!
Most small business owners would be aghast if they knew how most Source Selection Board members...the people who are evaluating their proposals...think about small businesses. Small businesses are un-branded, un-known, and with a very checkered past regarding performance. Objectively, small businesses ARE high-risk! So, if risk is "technically half" of a large business bid's score, then it's "REALLY HALF" a small business bid's score!
Admittedly, risk is a difficult topic for any bidder to address, especially small businesses without large past performances to point to and say, "we didn't screw up on these!" Without significant contract performance, corporate credentials are the only way to validate a small business's corporate maturity. Regarding risk, ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification is likely the easiest and best credential to obtain. Here's why.
The ISO 9001 Standard provides your company with fully documented management programs that are globally-accepted, industry best practices. One of these management systems is a robust Risk Management program. Possessing ISO Certification, a small business bidder can repeatedly cite various aspects of their "ISO 9001-Certified Risk Management Program" and how it virtually eliminates contract performance risk.
With only 1% of US companies possessing ISO 9001 Certification, now your company is playing into the Source Selection Board's fears about small businesses. You can now ghost the 99% of your "high-risk" small business competitors without ISO Certification, while playing the role as the "mature, responsible, low-risk bidder."

The one constant to life is change. That can be said about a person's career and professional success, as well. Although the term "transition" has been largely associated with the military community, every successful professional experiences at least one major career transition.
In fact, some of the largest career transitions have nothing to do with changing industries. Instead, it has to do with changing your role in an industry. Transitioning from a customer-facing contributor to the corporate office is a massive change. Similarly, transitioning into a leadership role can be just as daunting. In fact, accepting a position performing the same role in a different company can also be a significant transition due to corporate culture.
Without embracing change and transitioning from one industry, position, role, or company, you are not only becoming stagnant in your personal growth but also your career and financial well-being, as well. Most people forego the opportunities to learn, grow, advance and earn more money to simply stay in that same comfortable seat due to their fear of transition.
In the military, I learned how to become comfortable transitioning from job to job, role to role, and command to command. In the military, it's easy. It's called Orders. :-) Every 18 months to 36 months, the US Navy completely changed my professional world. Usually, the only constant in a new set of orders were the uniforms.
The trick that I used to overcome the discomfort of transitioning was a mind-set. Every transition has what I call the "Three Weeks of Suck." The first three weeks of any major change will be challenging. Even POSITIVE change requires at least a three week transition period! I remember moving into a much nicer corporate office and disliking it for the first three weeks because it was unfamiliar.
Knowing and accepting that my life would be turned upside down for three weeks put finite bounds around my transitions. Instead for thinking "this change is going to be awful," I could mentally put bounds to the amount of awful by thinking "this change is going to be awful for three weeks." I would then consider previous "awful" periods of my life that I transitioned and it gave me confidence. "I made it through (FILL IN THE BLANK), the next three weeks will be nothing." As a Navy veteran, I had a stack of things to "fill in the bIank!" :-)
For entrepreneurs, transition must be a way of life! Stepping away from a "job" to the great unknown of entrepreneurship or pivoting your company in a new direction...again and again...can be tough! However, it can also provide a lifetime of exhilaration, profession growth, tremendous personal satisfaction, and financial success! So what's three weeks of suck when compared to that!

"Just putting in time" doesn't cut it for anything that really matters...and this holds especially true for entrepreneurship. In most companies that I worked, it was taboo to shut your office door. Why? The boss couldn't tell if you were looking appropriately engaged in your work.
When I was the CEO, I actually encouraged my team to shut their doors so they could focus better. Was I concerned that they weren't working hard? Absolutely not. Here's why. In a small business, you can't coast or "phone it in." As soon as you take your hand off the sausage-making crank, everybody knows!
However, here is the shocking news...launching a successful company doesn't take any more time than any other professional job. If you're a white-collar professional, then you know you're not working a 9-to-5 job. You have a responsibility to "produce results."
Here's the real difference between being an entrepreneur and an employee...although the TIME requirement may be the same, the EFFORT and FOCUS are not! Launching a company means that there are things that MUST get done and it doesn't matter if it takes you 40 hours or 400 hours to complete them. Coasting or phoning it in doesn't get things accomplished.
BUT...here's the unexpected great news! If you train yourself to be 100% focused when you're working on your company, then you can launch your dream company while you keep your day job and normal income!

Most people rent their time... They will waste large portions of their life, expending countless hours of meaningless time because they're scared that if they try to make those hours really count...and fall short...then they'll be crushed. To avoid that pain, they throw those hours away by not investing any emotional equity in them. That way, they can avoid all possibility of failing because they never tried.
For example, people will work for 40-50 hours per week just for a paycheck to pay the bills. In some cases, they may not be in a position to do anything else. However, that is usually not the case. A lot of people are willing to throw away 40 to 50 hours every week towards dead-end jobs because investing their emotional equity...their hopes and dreams...in a rewarding career can lead to failure and pain. Fear of failure is debilitating and leads to a path that is so much worse than failing!
Failure is part of the process. Plus, nobody really gives a damn about your failures. Life is not like baseball where you have three strikes, or failures, and you're out. Failures don't matter. They're the plot twists, miscues and dead-end inquiries in a good mystery novel. Nobody tosses an Agatha Christie novel after the second chapter because Hercule Poirot just interviewed a completely innocent person. Instead, we're all turning the pages as quickly as we can to see how he brilliantly solves the case in the last chapter.
As a GovCon small business owner, my losses stung, but I learned from them and moved on. However, my wins meant everything! They changed my life. And, I never would have experienced those life-changing successes without the losses or with buying my time and making those 40 to 50 hours per week count.

There is nothing more sought after than finding a roadmap to riches...Or a Playbook that guarantees you success if you just follow the checklist.
And that is how franchisors prey on aspiring entrepreneurs! The old saying that if it's too good to be true, then well...it usually is. Franchise Disclosure Documents provide real up-front costs. And these costs are usually BRUTAL. However, people are will to pay them for the "secret roadmap to riches" because Franchise Disclosure Documents will frequently list estimated potential annual income like this
Estimated Income: "3,000 to $300,000."
Here's the FACTS:
The AVERAGE income of all franchises is $66,000.
The crown jewels of the franchising industry are restaurants...OVER HALF of all food service franchises make LESS THAN $50,000. I'm not going to disparage $50K, but restaurant franchises frequently require up to $1 MILLION just to have less than a 50% chance of making $50K.
If franchises were SOOOOO profitable, why don't the franchisors keep them to themselves? Why do many franchisors only own a few of their own companies?

It all begins at the top with great leaders. However, leadership doesn’t always look like people think it does. Being a great CEO does NOT mean that you must be able to come through with heroics, time and again, to be successful. In fact, the opposite is true.
The driving forces behind business success are documented processes, well-defined roles & responsibilities, management oversight, and data-driven decision-making. Good leadership is documented. Bad leaders heroically respond to non-existent policies, undocumented processes, and ill-defined corporate roles.
As a first-time CEO, I learned this the hard way when I discovered that my company could not grow beyond our first large contract award. I relied upon the structured construct of becoming ISO 9001 Quality Management certified to achieve my business goals.
It worked...we won hundreds of millions of dollars in set aside contracts, leading to a successful acquisition.

The transition management plan section, whether explicitly or implicitly required in the RFP, can be a major discriminator...if you write a great one! In fact, small businesses usually win their first prime contract by demonstrating their ability to transition the contract AND successfully rebadge the incumbent employees...while pricing the proposal significantly less that the incumbent. The Source Selection Board will accept the risk of going with a "new company's" if they feel confident of getting the same incumbent people at a worthwhile discount!

The only thing more terrifying than the first day of a large prime contract transition period is the first day after a poorly managed transition period...
Transition management is vitally important to the success of any contract award. In fact, the 30-day transition period is the time with the highest probability of being terminated by the customer, especially if the losing incumbent contractor isn't playing nicely...which is most of the time. Listen in to learn the risks and critical components of a successful transition management plan. This podcast discusses the importance of an infrastructure plan, a knowledge transfer plan, a continuity of service plan, and a rapid staffing plan.

The New Year is an ideal time to rejuvenate your entrepreneurial efforts, pursue ambitious small business goals and affect positive changes in your company! However, you must have "better" resolutions to produce "better" results! Here are three tips that will significantly improve entrepreneurial goals:
1. Create "resolutions with bite!" Or, as I call it, "Dream with Consequences." You should fully document the NEGATIVE repercussions of NOT attaining your resolution/dream/goal. If you consider your resolutions as simply "icing on the cake" then they have very little probability of accomplishing them. Either you're woefully wrong or your resolutions are relatively meaningly otherwise.
2. Don't make the desired outcome your resolution. Instead make the ROUTINE self-assessment of your progress your resolution. For example, to lose weight, don't make your resolution to "lose weight." Instead, make your resolution to weigh yourself every week.
3. Create enablers for success. Include a partner or family as part of your resolution. Join a class. Earmark designated time in your schedule to accomplish your goal. Join a cohort. Etc., etc.

b.5 failed to meet their SDVOSB Prime Goal

Supporting a Federal Government customer can be one of the most rewarding professional experiences that you may have has a billable contractor. However, it can also be challenging. Like any industry, you can always have "difficult" customers. Knowing and following these three "Contractor Commandments" will provide you the mindset to excel, regardless of your alignment with your customer. Engendering trust is one of the most important, unstated aspects of any proposal activity. If the Source Selection board does not trust your company or bid, then they will find away to lower to score, usually through a lower confidence assessment, to make the award to a trusted bidder! Trust and confidence are very closely related.
The five Cs of trust include:
These components of trust are not always easy to convey...however, one easy way to always engender trust is through the attainment of ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification. ISO 9001 demonstrates "Care" by empowering everyone of your employees to affect positive change in your company and on your customers' contracts through a formal Change Management System. ISO 9001 also includes Program Management Reviews and a Customer Satisfaction Program that shows your customers that you're committed to meeting their performance needs. With an ISO 9001 Program, Communication of key performance indicators and customer satisfaction is DATA DRIVEN that provides 100% actionable insights! Character is best defined by how you operate when nobody is watching. In an ISO 9001 Certified company, you are focused on the quality of internal performance and deliverables, making your claims that you will be committed to ensuring the highest possible performance for your customers more believable. At the core of any ISO 9001 Program are repeatable, documented and version-controlled processes that consistently provide deliverables. Finally, Competence is PROVEN with the prestigious ISO Certification through verified adherence to globally-accepted industry best practices! In fact, less than 0.1% of US companies possess ISO Certification.

Bottom Line Upfront: Factoring is very similar to "white collar loan-sharking!" In a factoring arrangement, you are selling your unpaid (approved) invoices to a third party who buys them for less than their dollar amount. The good news is that you get your money faster than waiting for the government to pay you, so you can do vitally important things like "make payroll." The bad news is that factoring arrangements are usually worse than a moderately bad credit card! Knowing how to avoid factoring landmines can save you a bunch of money because many rapidly growing small businesses are forced to enter factoring arrangements to overcome growing pains.

There are tons of books, podcasts and social media outlets by successful leaders, business executives, and motivational gurus. Without question, these people are wildly successful. However, does that make them good mentors...FOR YOU? Chances are...no.
Finding a great mentor is incredibly important! But they must be aligned with your goals to be truly impactful. Listening to a motivational speaker tell you that you must find your inner self will not help you find low-cost benefits administration support. Similarly, reading a leadership book by a Navy SEAL about a "snatch and grab" mission will not help you manage a disgruntled customer...well maybe it will, but then you have to dispose of the body. :-)
Your ideal mentor is a person who is five to ten years ahead of you on YOUR business path...in YOUR industry. And these folks aren't writing books. You have to find them.
Let's be politically INcorrect for a bit. Regardless of industry, if a startup or ultra-small business bought all of the requisite infrastructure to ensure successful execution of a win, they would go bankrupt. Leadership is not "spending away risk." Heck, anybody can do that. real leadership is understanding what risks must be managed. The easiest way to manage infrastructure risks is to have a robust infrastructure PLAN that can be IMMEDIATELY executed. Are there still risks? Absolutely. But your company will avoid the catastrophic risk of going bankrupt funding corporate infrastructure before it is fully needed.
Writing a winning government contracting proposal is hard. That's why a proposal must by "built." You cannot simply starting writing on page one of a proposal and continue to the page constraint and address all the necessary perspectives to win. These perspectives include:
1. The bidder's perspective
2. The customer's perspective
3. External perspective
4. Competitions' perspective
