Apparently, I'm having a bit of an issue with where my loyalties lie when it comes to my furbabies. It's always been clear that a) I am a cat person and b) my furbabies come 1st, but good heavens has life thrown me some totally unfair and irresistible cutiepies that have questioned my very core as a fur-mommy.
I've introduced Meow Meow before, but here he is again, on our boundary wall between us and our neighbours, in all his gloriously floofy, majestic beauty. It's true, he is an asshole. Even his owners say he's an asshole, but good lord does he make up for it in pure gorgeousness. I know he upsets my cat's, especially the girls. Mittens has a love/ hate relationship with him in that they love to brawl. For mittens, its just a game, but Meow Meow takes it far more seriously. Meow Meow is also an enormous cat. According to @zakludick though, Mittens gives Meow Meow a total run for his money. The last fight witnessed, there was more white fur flying than black, so for a kitten/ catten (teenage cat), Mittens is either really brave or really stupid. It's probably honestly a combination.
Mittens has also been displaying his own unapologetic levels of ridiculous cuteness. Just look at how he's taken over the couch!
Lexi has been out on the prowl a lot lately. Although our neighbours who were feeding her have moved out, I believe she has some other poor soul wrapped around her finger where she obtains treats and a break from Mittens and the kids. When she does come home, I can't help but make a massive fuss over her. She is just such a uniquely gorgeous cat. My mom sent me this screenshot the other day asking if it's possible if Lexi has some wild cat in her, and I definitely think she's right. Lexi is an African wild cat/ Siamese/ tabby. This combo makes her fiercely independent, very vocal and extremely affectionate (but only on her own terms). When she comes to lie with me I feel like "the chosen one" ππΎ for such a fancy cat, she sure does make a big mess when she eats though. She's also SUCH a drama queen. Like she won't just come and cuddle quietly. She 1st has to make a whole song and dance about it. Whether she's trying to get my attention to watch her enter through my open bedroom window or my open bedroom door, there's a whole procedure where she meows at me and I have to beg her to come inside.ππΉ
This weekend, I got the chance to have a bit of a retreat, to ease my anxiety. My friends needed to get away for a holiday (they hadn't taken a break in YEARS) and they asked me to come over and look after the house and the furbabies. Let me get this straight, not only am I a cat person, but when it comes to dogs, I'm like, get a real dog if you have to. Not a tiny yapper. But then I met Roxy... and she undid the fabric of my existence on this earth. Granted, she is dumb as anything, but good heavens, if happiness could be anthropomorphized, she would be it. She constantly wants to be up, cuddled, and loved and every time she sees you (like anyone) it's like the most exciting thing that's ever happened to her. She was also surprisingly un-yappy. Perhaps @aimeludick's requests for a toy-pom weren't too crazy after all... I'm just saying, if one falls into my lap somehow, I won't say no...
Oh God, did I mention she snores?
Reality did kick in upon arriving home though, as I realized it was time for all of us to have our scheduled quarterly deworming. Also, at least cats go poop in the neighbour's garden as God intended. Dogs are far less independent.
But still, I mean... she's sort of a cat, right? I'm certainly sure that Roxy doesn't really pass as a dog :p... @zakludick I'm just saying πππππΎπΎππ

Poor Mittens is in the spotlight again this week as our one-ball-wonder has discovered the opposite sex and has been driving us, our neighbours, and every one five blocks away absolutely bonkers with his cat calling at all hours of the night. It is a rather unusual thing to be asking for your money back, so I'm trying to negotiate with the SPCA that I can bring him back for them to attend to the fuzzball they missed.
There is very little we can do to control him right now, so he's sharing lockdown quarters with a very grumpy Lexi, who we've now recaptured for a third time as her other family has finally moved out. Hopefully, she'll stay home after this round of lockup. Who knows.
Luckily, both our girls have been spayed, otherwise, we'd have a whole litter of stinky little fur balls to worry about! Gorgeous kittens but still... no. Bad Claire :p
I've tried launching pillows at him and spraying near him with deodorant (the sound is very effective) but I think the hormones are pretty much involuntary and all-consuming at times. You know? When pussy calls...β¦ pussy must answer.... meow...π±π
MewMew the neighbourhood tomcat (yes, I know he's SO floofy, you should see his tail!)
So for now, these bed buddies will have to tolerate each other while we try to keep mittens out of trouble. He is fighting MewMew (the ENORMOUS boy from next door) and has had some nasty chunks taken out of him, but his relentless hunt for a mate is what has us most worried as it has him wondering out of the gate. I may moan about him a lot, but his squint doff ass has really grown on us, and losing him would be an unfathomable tragedy, especially since we already lost Chai this year: who was basically still a kitten himself.
So @aimeludick and I will play cat tennis, as summer descends upon us and our west-facing home gets smothered in afternoon sun - which is incredible for releasing aromas from the litter boxes. So cat tennis is not as horrific as it sounds, it just means we have the cat/s swap rooms when one of us can't breathe anymore.
Dearest Squeek has just been an absolute model of good behaviour and has turned into the most lovely, well behaved and affectionate house cat. SWhe takes no crap from Mittens and swipes him when he tries to bully her, but other than that, she's always on time for dinner, comes for cuddles, and is generally just a pleasure. This is also why I once again don't have any photos of her this week. It's always the naughty children that end up in the spotlight! Right @zakludick? I think I owe poor Squeek a post dedicated just to her and her perfect little beans.
Let's see next week, shall we?
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=clairemobey/iuijshcica
Little bitch.
Lord I love Lexi but yirre is she too clever AND pretty for her own good!
We've had construction workers in our complex disturbing the peace and waking my unemployed ass up with chainsaws and grinders at 8am. It's no wonder one of the cats got spooked and bolted.
I actually thought it would be Squeek out of all of them as she's the most skittish, but Lexi? No way. She's my bed ninja π’
So it started with her not showing up for meal times and MEOWING loudly at 3h45 am every morning to be let into our bedroom so she could cuddle @zakludick (that's right, him. Not me. Her damn mother).
And then she stopped coming home completely π’ we've had a bad run with kitties this year and I am super emotional when something goes awry with any of my furbabies.
A few days later we spotted her on the neighbour's roof and we were able to coax her inside with tuna. That didn't last and she Houdini's her little furry butt out before we knew it.
A few days after that we spotted her in our neighbour's garden, sunbathing like she didn't have a care in the world, so off I went with my tin of tuna to retrieve her AGAIN. it took a little longer this time and juggling keys, a squirming cat and an open tin of tuna is no joke.
I managed to get her home and stuck her in my room. Once again, she managed to dart past me as I was distracted and too slow. Then for the next week I could see her on the garage roof and in the neighbour's garden just giving me the evil eye.
I decided to wait until the workers were done and Mittens had been to the SPCA for the chop so that things would be peaceful and hopefully now ball-less mittens wouldn't harass her so.
So yesterday I returned to our neighbour's armed with a tin of tuna but had Aime with me for backup.
It was a 45 minute standoff.
The trick is to play it cool, have irresistible food and prenend she doesn't exist.
I sat down on the pavement and chatted to our lovely neighbour who informed me that Lexi has been house hopping and was being fed by at least 3 different families π€£π€£ I think these people were her new favorites because they were now privy to the 3am booty call and really, they didn't look like they wanted to give her back. I can't blame them. She is very very lovely.
So the neighbour's and I sat and chatted and made a few rookie mistakes that had Lexi turn around and go lick her butt just out of reach of us.
EVENTUALLY.
She couldn't resist it anymore and she came close enough for me to reach her.
I didn't react immediately but rather let her think that I was just there to feed her, and as she stuck her head in the bowl, I grabbed her!
Amie and I scuttled home, this time Aime carrying the keys and the tuna and me wrestling a very squirmy and pissed-off Lexi. We got her upstairs and that's where she's going to stay for the next two weeks!
GROUNDED!
I'm going to put an extra tag on her collar that tells people not to feed her and that she does actually have a home.
Check her out and her 7 stages of grief π€£π€£β€οΈβ€οΈ

Last week, I posted about our awkward situation, with our third princess, who unexpectedly sprouted a pair of balls (to my and the vets surprise at his/ her second round of vaccinations), in A Tale of Three Tales - Part 12: Conical Cats and Gender Reassignment.
To be honest, not much has changed since the "gender reassignment." We all still struggle awkwardly with HIS pronouns, but he don't give a shit as he continues to run around the house causing havoc, stealing loaves of bread and attacking my pajama laces as I try to get my crippled-ass down the stairs for snaktime (no my ass in not cripples, my knee is... just for clarity).
If I am going to die, this is how it's going to happen:
To help those of you catch up, that are new to this series, Mittens took a swipe at our quietest kitty, Squeek (actually my mom's cat, but she's my baby now), a few weeks ago and she has been in quarantine ever since. Two visits and a ridiculous amount of money on vet fees later, she is doing well. The Abscess has stopped reforming and scabbing is complete to the point that we're just waiting for it to fall of. The last thing I want is a secondary infection. The hole in her face was massive, after two eruptions and mechanical debridement at the vet. I'm so thrilled at her progress, really. I mean, if you have to think about in in proportion to our own faces, half her face was an abscess :( She was in a lot of pain and very miserable, and of course, the vet gave us the dreaded cat leukemia talk (I lost two cats two months apart in 2020 to this horrible disease) at our second visit there, and I was just seeing stars as I wanted to pass out from anger and grief. Lord not this again.
But! Miss Conical Cat is on the mend and is hysterical. She provides so much entertainment that I don't think I ever want to take the cone off π€£π€£ hahaha. No that's terrible, but I will. Her usual airs and graces and snootiness have all gone to shit now that she is horribly directionally challenged. She also now licks her cone obsessively since she can't bathe herself unless she's on a cone break.
SourceLexi, who is my favorite cat (don't tell the others), definitely was freaked out by the cone and the smell of disinfectant when we were treating the wound while it was still open. She came up to Squeek to say hello, took one whiff of the detol, and swiped poor Squeek on the nose! Like "omg you smell terrible let me smack you." Cats are weird man. She's much nicer to Squeek now that she doesn't stink of "vet" anymore.
Back to Mittens, he definitely has hormones kicking in and our neighborhood bully has had one or two brushes with our tiny vicious tomboy. Usually MewMew (yes I KNOW he's soo floofy and gorgeous and I ALMOST let him in to sleep on my bed when he asked so nicely) has the upper hand in size and personality and he gets away with terrorizing the girls.
Mittens has zero fear, and even though he's half MewMew's size, he sends him packing with relentless annoyance.
We'll probably keep Squeek here in my bedroom in lockdown for another week and then we'll let her go back out into the world where she can sit on walls and judge us like he peasants we are. I can't say I'll miss the litterbox in my bedroom π€’ but I will miss my live-in butt warmer (she likes to perch herself there when I'm reading - biggest surface area, I guess).
Until next time, love and purrs from me, @zakludick @merenludick @aimeludick @matthew-williams and the furbabies <3

Usually this song is a privelege only extented to those who come to watch us live,
but after all the love and support you've all shown MobeyDick (Myself and
@JasperDick), we figured you guys have EARNED the right to watch this one!
Featuring the incredibly awesome @ZakLudick and his shot at interprative dance,
I present to you: @ JasperDick's very own original "Naughty Cat Song!"
Allegedly written for @JasperDick's little girl, instead of "Heads, Shoulders Heels and
Toes," I actually believe it was written just so he can get his beautiful Wife, Julia
and her sister Helen to stand up and do the actions in fornt of the crowd at the end
of the night, at which point in the show, everyone has had too much wine π
This time, the girls left it up to @ZakLudick!

The Reload group is fast becoming the trendiest name in hospitality, here on
the West Coastin Cape Town!
On Thursday evening, I was lucky enough to be invited to join the beautiful
Jessica Garvie to celebrate the reopening of their Leadville Dog Park, Sunningdale Branch.
Truly trendsetting in their decor and fabulous aritsan menu (which includes the Cape Town's best sour-dough woodfired pizza and sour-dough bagels), Reload is setting the bar high for other establishments in the area.
Aside from the incredible cullinary offerings and decor, they are also
extremely dog friendly, with special seating available in the dog friendly area.
They even have a special menu for your furbabies and are delighted to bring them a bowl of
water on arrival - which will be greatly appreciated after your dog has spent time
running around and socialising in the dog park itself.
Both Reload restaurants, in Parklands and Table View have also started
featuring local live music talent on certain evenings: currently it's Saturday nights for The Flamingo Vlei, Table View Branch and Thursday nights for The Leadville, Sunningdale Branch. We'll be watching this develop with keen interest for sure!
On the opening night, Rob, also AKA The Boxer, The Ring graced us with gentle renditions of our favourite classics and crooned the audience late into the evening, leading the venue to close quite a bit later than usual!
Between lovely ambience, beautiful friends and excellent wine, the opening was a truly exquisit evening and we can't wait to come back for more!

I mean, Come On! With a Name Like MobeyDick, how could we NOT do a song ABOUT WHALES?
Thank you so much to @AimeLudick and @ZakLudick for joining us on stage and to the fabulous audience for singing along and stomping their feet like crazy!
For those of you who don't know MobeyDick's history, @JasperDick and I were preeschool besties.
We've known eachother longer than anyone, aside from our parents and siblings.
Somehow, life happened and somewhere along the way, we lost contact, Even though we attended the same juniour and high school after preschool, it wasn't really until the Covid Lockdown that we rekindered our friendship and started making music!
As I am sure you can imagine, kids made a heck of a lot of fun of us and would say things like "When you grow up and you get married you two will be MobeyDick!" Well, we certainly didnt get marrried, but we did start a band, so pfffffffffffft right back at you, playground bullies!!!
@JasperDick has married the beautiful @ Julia Baker and I am (soon to be, technically) married to @ZakLudick, and no, the irony of Zak's surname is not lost on us either! We thought this song was the perfect ending to a fantastic set, and a real amalgamation of what we're all about: Great Music, Family, Performing with our hearts on our sleeves and having a jolly old time every time we do!
Thank you to Bill Knight and The Cottage Club for your warm and vibey venue and for sharing this special evening with us!

Here in South Africa, every July 18th, we, as citizens, celebrate Nelson Mandela's birthday by taking 67 minutes of our time and dedicate it to serve to others in need. These 67 minutes are in appreciation of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and human rights for all.
For me, Nelson Mandela was a man of flesh and blood. Not just a famous character from history. When I my mother took us to St Georges Cathedral in the Centre of Cape Town (just after the 1994 elections, where South Africa became free from the rule of the apartheid government) at just 9 years old, to meet the Queen of England who was attending Sunday Mass with our new president. I remeber her walking out of the catherdral, shrowded by body guards and royal guards. I remember stannding there in my floral dress, grasping my hand picked bunch of flowers and holding my breath - hoping to get a glance of this magnificent royal woman, and perhaps the opportunity to hand her my small gift. But alas, she glances at the crowd, gave a brief wave, and disappeared into the back of a limosine. I started to cry a little..... and fumbled with my flowers. My mother gentrly caressed my shoulder and we prepared to navigate our way out of the crowd. Suddenly there was an astounding comotion as Nelson Mandela crossed Whale street with his body guards nervously chasing him and he walked straight into the crowd. No protection, no bullet proof vest. Nothing. He caught my eye and walked sttraight up to me. Lifted me off the ground and kissed me lovingly on my cheek. I still remember the slight roughness of his cheeks and the warmth of his smile an embrace. I handed him my flowers and he looked at me like I had given him the world, ironic considering that he gave each and every one of us the right to our own lives and liberty.
I have yet to decide what to do with my 67 minutes this year. Perhaps we'll visit an animal shelter. Perhaps we'll volunteer for a local charity or NGO.
The year before last, the kids and I supported Mandela Day with local charity Ladles of Love and we broke a world record for the most amount of sandwiches made in 67 minutes. It was such a special experience for myself, @ZakLudick, @AimeLudick, @MerenLudick and @Matthew-Williams.
In 2017, while putting in my 67 minutes, I received yet another a gift in return. I had the unique and especially honerable opportunity to busk for Madiba day, to raise funds to help feed and clothe the homeless. Our local radio station, Smile 90.4fm held an incredible innitiative where they got 67 musicians accross Cape Town to busk simultaneously for 67 minutes to raise funds for specific charities. We were hand picked and each one of us got an opportunity to be interviewed live on air, and even had videos taken of us.
2017 was quite possibly the worst year of my life and the closest I came to taking my own life. Having lost my will to live and having not sung for decades, when I heard the advert on the radio, I am still not sure where I found the bravery, but I knew this was my moment. My last chance at hope and it was the catalyst that set me free and changed the whole course of my life. I filed for divorce a month later and each day got brighter and brighter as I found my way out of the darkness. The road was not always easy, but I will never forget walking into the studio and being asked to sing live on air. I knew the lyrics so well, but still had them written down. I chose the song "Smile" because of the profound hope of the beautiful lyrics Charlie Chaplin wrote, but it was also as a salute to the radio station, Smile 90.4fm, who hosted me. I remember the paralysing fear and my colleague watching me shake so much that the piece of paper in my hand was waving like a frantinc surrender flag. I did it though. I sang. Live on air, to hundreds of thousands of people. If I could do that, then I could surely find the bravery for my own long walk to freedom and each court appearance until it was over and I was finally free.
Later, in 2020, with the start of Covid and when all of our lives were put on hold and priorities were reset, I came accross this video. I remembered what it felt like to open my heart, my voice and my soul and I remebered what it felt like to do so, while doing something absolutely incredible for other people.
I would like to challenge you, no matter where you are in the world, to take 67 minutes this Mandela day, and make a small difference in your community. Small ripples make waves. Each one of us, if we move together, can change the world through kindness, love, compassion and hope.
Happy Madiba Day <3

I've always had such a soft spot for this song. With my parents being born in the 1940's and 1950's respectively, they were utter hippies when they met.
This song has always struck a nostalgic chord with me and Sandi Thom's phenomenal voice carries this incredible acapella song so beautifully, powerfully and strongly,
it was one of my most daunting to cover.
It was, however, one of my very 1st attempts at home recording during our hardest lockdown here in South Africa. Amaizing what isolation, prohibition and mindnumbing boredom
can help you achieve!
With a few meters of string, sticky tape, prestic/ tickytak and my phone and the use of various furniture including burglar bars and washing lines on my windows, I rigged up a home recording studio, that I could move all over the house. I was not prepared AT ALL for how much of a mission it would be to be the camera lady, the lighting expert, the performer,
the producer and the 1st aider (I almost broke my toe by dropping my phone on it).
This song was a tough one and incredibly challenging to cover (mostly nerves and stage fright) and I actually practiced it in a lower key to start. I realised that it lost most of its magic,
so, I put on my big girl panties, reread and practiced my notes from my singing trainer, and realised that I am, myself, a Punk Rocker, after all <3
"Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69, revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
When the head of state didn't play guitar
Not everybody drove a car
When music really mattered and when radio was king
When accountants didn't have control
And the media couldn't buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn't know everything
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69, revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
When pop stars still remained a myth
And ignorance could still be bliss
And when God save the Queen she turned a whiter shade of pale
When my mom and dad were in their teens
And anarchy was still a dream
And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69, revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
When record shops were still on top
And vinyl was all that they stocked
And the super info-highway was still drifting out in space
Kids were wearing hand-me-downs
And playing games meant kick arounds
And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69, revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh, I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair"

Recorded in Janurary 2000. Instrumentals arranged by Bad Loop, Vocals and lyrics by Claire Mobey.
Bad Loop and I recorded and mixed this track overnight, in one sitting, in a dingy apartment in Claremont.
I was 14 going on 15 at the time and with the help of an entire carton of YES cigarrettes and and unmeasurable amount of coffee, we finished this song in approximatey 13 hours, working until dawn.
What I didn't realise at the time, was the significance of this song in my life story. That it was both the precurser to the darkest years of my life, but also somehow the place I could always come back to for comfort and hope.
With it's killer base line and melodic and melancholic piano hook, I hope you'll pump up the volume as loud and your windows can handle.
