In this episode of The Art Coaching Club Podcast, I sit down with Anna Barrington, author of the debut novel The Spectacle—a sharp, fast-paced social thriller inspired by real art world scandals.

Anna draws from her seven years working inside galleries, museums, and auction houses to give us a rare insider’s perspective on how power, money, and ambition collide in the art world. We discuss:

– Why galleries, museums, and auctions often resemble the finance world, with billions moving quietly behind closed doors
– The heated auction for The Spectacle and how its cover reveal landed exclusively in People magazine
– The allure of the charming conman, and why he feels like a uniquely modern figure
– Collecting art: what to know, and what separates the artist who succeeds from one who doesn’t
– How the art world reflects broader culture, from the Trump era to MeToo, cancel culture, and shifting politics

At the heart of The Spectacle is Ingrid, an aspiring artist pulled into the orbit of Rudolph Sullivan, a powerful figure whose debts and lies threaten to unravel everything. It’s a novel about art, ambition, and survival in a world where appearances mean everything.

If you’re fascinated by the intersection of art, money, and culture—or just love a gripping debut novel—this episode will be a favorite.

I️ hope you enjoy today's episode with Kelsey Howard. Learn more about Kelsey in her own words below.

I was born and raised in Wilmington, NC. After graduating from Elon University in 2014 with an art major and biology minor, I attended UNC- Greensboro and became a registered nurse. While I had made art for many years, I became much more invested in painting as I grew in my first year as a nurse. Sitting in front of an easel after a day of work brought me a lot of joy and relaxation.

The first subject I truly loved to paint was the human face. My initial interest started when I was probably 11 or 12 years old and began as an interest in anatomy. My style eventually developed into a love of using bright colors while working in more subtle colors, textures, and details. After a few years working as a registered nurse, I left to pursue painting full time and currently work out of an at home studio. When I’m not painting, you’ll usually find me walking at the beach or a local park near our neighborhood. I love to gather artistic inspiration from traveling and nature. My husband and I currently live in Wilmington, NC with our two dogs, a cat, and a lot of plants.

Enjoy today's conversation with Allison James.

Allison James is a contemporary abstract painter.

James is continually inspired by the messy (but thrilling) human experience. Her work is fueled by personal events and memories, along with conversations overheard from strangers and inside storybooks. James reconfigures these felt emotions into a preferred outcome, translating feeling into her own abstracted storytelling.

With this trio of internal processing, Allison is able to construct a new visual narrative of self through her paintings, each piece speaking with saturated color and subtle details. She uses her training as a representational artist and printmaker to build up her signature silhouettes with layers of thin paint, elusive details and recognizable shapes that she endearingly refers to as her ‘decoder ring things.’

James believes a painting can be many things at once, just like people (and most things in life). The cathartic creation processes and making work that feels substantial within its own existence is what keeps her coming back for more. Allison believes her work as a mirror for all of us to see ourselves more clearly, with love and acceptance — all in due time.

Allison James has a BFA in Painting, Printmaking and Drawing. She has been seen and featured in various media, including The New York Times, The Bad on Paper podcast, Architectural Digest, Medium, Midwest Living, and Atlanta Magazine. She has been in shows throughout the US and has work in private collections around the world. Allison currently works and lives in Georgia.

Enjoy today's episode with Elisa Sheehan. Elisa Sheehan’s art is an invitation to consider the fluent language of nature, the beauty in the broken, and the symphony of color and shape gifted to us by the world itself.

With a background in fine art and design, Elisa brings both technical acuity and an unbridled spirit of wonder and discovery to all of her creations. Her works, which span across mediums from fine art painting to kintsugi-inspired eggshell installations, are woven with common threads that ask the observer to ponder the relationship between fragility and strength, to embrace a staggering spectrum of color, and above all, to notice the indelible mark of the natural world on everything we consider beautiful and valuable.

Elisa lives rogue and rural in Upstate New York with her family—her favorite tribe of co-adventurers with whom she explores nature, pockets always laden with stones and sticks, and inspiration always within reach. She believes in making art that sustains others, by inviting the outdoors in.

"I’ve always loved the Japanese art of kintsugi. It calls us to celebrate age, history, and the scars that life and time make upon everything and everyone. I embrace this as a way to think about ourselves, others, and our relationships as we age. It honors the inevitable imperfections of everything we see and might aspire to be, and represents the duality of fragility and strength, beauty and brokenness.”

Enjoy today's episode with Lynn Sanders.

Lynn Sanders is an artist excited by beauty: architecture, foliage, landscapes, seascapes,
interiors. She finds palettes and shapes in her environment and propels them into her
work, believing in the power of art to stimulate a person’s environment and state of mind.

Intuitive in nature, Lynn’s painting process is chaotic, and its speed and intensity are often
reflective of her current emotions. She begins her process using a tool that she designed to
apply custom colors mixed with various mediums to the canvas. Working primarily in
acrylics, acrylic mediums, and ink, she achieves chemical reactions that enhance the
composition. Her tool allows her to apply the paint at a pace that reflects her impatient
nature. This process achieves deep tones layered with transparent shapes. Her long
relationship with this application technique has allowed her to develop an innate
understanding of the precise amount of pressure and paint needed to achieve her
signature aesthetic.

With a focus on process over concept, Lynn’s pieces invite the viewer to ponder the
technique and imagery. Her satisfaction comes from knowing that her pieces speak her
own unique visual language.

Lynn resides in Lafayette, Louisiana with her husband and son, as well as her beloved pets.

Prior to her art career Lynn spent 16 years in the shopping mall industry as a marketing
director, general manager and temporary tenant leasing agent. She worked for large
property owners – Jones Lang Lasalle, General Growth Properties and Debartolo
Corporation.

Enjoy today's episode with Erin Donahue Tice.

Erin Donahue Tice is a self-taught abstract artist based in Austin, Texas creating original paintings for inspired collectors across the country. In 2023 she launched her debut collection of textiles and wallpaper. Her work has been featured in House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, Traditional Home, Southern Home and Luxe Magazine.

Following a 12-year career in corporate PR, Erin started painting after the birth of her second son as both a creative and therapeutic outlet.

Erin's medium of choice is acrylics but she also experiments with mixed mediums. She is drawn to the object nature of abstract art and loves the free-flowing experience of creating something unexpected. From far away, her canvases appear to have sharp lines, yet upon closer inspection, the viewer discovers delicate marks and subtle shadows that gives each piece interest. There is almost always an undercurrent of both black and white within Erin’s pieces, which offers balance amid a mostly colorful visual experience. And every now and then, color is stripped completely to offer a stripped-down neutral palette and sense of calmness, reflective of the more serene experiences in my life.

Erin challenges herself by playing around with different elements, from layering paper, foam and cardboard onto canvases, to using acrylics, gouache, oil pastels, markers and charcoal to bring her pieces to life. She especially loves the process of marrying interior design with art and is passionate about working hand-in-hand with designers and clients alike to create a statement.

Erin also draws inspiration from her "happy place," The Hamptons, where she has spent her summers since 2010. She resides in Austin, TX with her husband Bill and their three little boys, William, George and Andrew.

Alex enjoyed a small town childhood in the old mining town of Jerome, Arizona - there were more ghosts than residents and the arts community thrived. It was his mother's ceramic studio and gallery that first nurtured Alex's taste in art. Enjoy today's honest, heartwarming, and fun loving conversation with Harrison Blackford.
Harrison Blackford is a Charleston, South Carolina based abstract and impressionist artist who believes there can never be enough color on a canvas. She enjoys using energetic colors and vibrant hues to inspire a work of art. Harrison is captivated by the fact that a single painting can illuminate a space and tie an entire room together. Her passionate use of color and energetic brushstrokes infuse her personality into each one of her expressive paintings.

Harrison grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and developed a deep interest in the arts and interior design at an early age. Later, studying art history and art at the University of the South: Sewanee, she continued to seek inspiration from historic artists as well as current artists of today. After her college years, she continued studying artists of new and old; In the summer of 2019, she had the chance to study the works and painting styles of Cezanne & Van Gogh in Aix-en-Provence, France. Harrison was fortunate to paint in the exact same locations where those artists painted some of their most famous works. To this day, this experience and the landscapes of Provence still serve as a constant influence for new work.

Over the past twelve years of her art career, Harrison's artwork has been featured in some of the most prolific art/home magazines, online publications, and blogs in the industry. This has led her to have shows across the United States and collaborate with many nationally known brands as well as interior designers.

Harrison Blackford Art Studio is located in downtown Charleston, S.C. The studio serves as a working gallery and studio space. While she is there painting, appointments and walk-ins are welcome. Having painted full time for twelve years, Harrison sells and ships her artwork internationally. She currently keeps all available pieces at the studio, which are also listed on her website. (www.harrisonblackford.com) Charleston continues to serve as an illuminating creative community for the fine arts and she is always finding inspiration in the landscape and architecture of the lowcountry. Harrison enjoys nothing more than a beautiful South Carolina day, windows up in her studio, and paint on her canvas. Join us for an in-depth interview with Kellie Lawler.

Kellie is inspired by structured design, patterns, and textiles. She has created many acrylic and ink artwork. Combining intrigue with the freedom of a continuous line technique, she creates graphic perspectives of human figures, nature, and other subjects. In creating a subject in one line, without constraints of proportion or perfection, each painting might unfurl differently in both the viewer's and the artist's eyes. Through her artwork, imperfect form meets perfect interpretation.

Kellie developed her skills at her high school in Baltimore, MD which provided an extensive elective art program. At Brown University, she played Division I Lacrosse, and her focus shifted to sports and her studies. As can happen, her love for art fell to the wayside. Kellie left providence in 1999 with a BA in psychology and a great guy, a fellow athlete at Brown, who later became her husband. His journey in the medical field has moved their family of six around often, but they have now happily landed in Alabama.

As fulfilling as life has been over the years, something was always missing. Curiosity leads Kellie to dust off a decades-old art portfolio and study her old love. At that moment, she knew she was about to start a new chapter of her life.

Kimberly Zuckley, an artist from Mobile, Alabama, joins me, Hayley Price, to share her compelling story of resilience and adaptability. We delve into how a vibrant art scene and local festivities like Mardi Gras can spark creativity and wonder in artists' hearts, and the importance of returning to one's true passion, no matter the obstacles faced or the detours taken along the way.

When the canvas of life meets the brush of experience, stories worth sharing are created. That's precisely what unfurls as I, Hayley Price, reconnect with Lisa Anne Tindal, an artist whose career evolution is as vibrant as her palette. Our conversation reveals the undercurrents of confidence and the role it plays not only in the art we create but also in the business we build around it. Lisa opens her heart about the growth she's witnessed, and we discuss how platforms like Instagram have become the new galleries for artists worldwide.

Our exchange takes a deeper dive into the essence of artistry—how it's perceived in the public eye versus the intimate dance it shares with its creator in solitude. The realization that came to me during a live art performance sparked a transformation in my workshop approach, favoring 'guided painting' to foster individual creativity among participants. We don't shy away from discussing the pressures that come with competition; instead, we celebrate the liberation of authenticity and the importance of a supportive community that bolsters confidence and encourages collective growth.

In a world where sharing your story can seem daunting, we talk about the interplay of art, faith, and vulnerability. The warmth with which audiences respond to honest expressions on social media is a testament to the human desire for genuine connection. And as we navigate economic challenges, we reaffirm the power of hope and creativity as sustenance for an artist's soul. From practical email marketing tips to the simple joy of painting with a child, this episode is a heartfelt reminder of the artist's journey through adversity towards the light of inspiration and shared discovery.
