The Columbia Workshop || The Fall of the City | April 11, 1937
Columbia Workshop, pioneered all kinds of special sound effects and other dramatic techniques. In 1937 it put on a poetic drama by Archibald MacLeish called The Fall of the City, featuring a 22-year-old actor with an unforgettably expressive voice. The play was a sensation, which helped point the way to what radio could achieve. It also made the actor, Orson Welles, an overnight star.

The play was broadcast live from the drill hall of the Seventh Regiment Armory in Manhattan, New York. The site was chosen for the acoustic properties needed for the production. The principal director was Irving Reis who was also the producer. Music was composed and directed by Bernard Herrmann, music director of the Columbia Workshop. William N. Robson was responsible for crowd supervision; Brewster Morgan was editorial supervisor; and the stage manager was Earle McGill.
The production involved the construction of a soundproof isolation booth for Welles. Two hundred extras were used for the crowds, drawn from New York University students, New Jersey high school students and boys clubs.
To simulate a crowd of 10,000, Reis recorded the sounds of the extras during rehearsals, including their shouts. During the actual performance, these recordings were played at four different locations in the Armory; the recordings were played at slightly different speeds to give the effect of a larger crowd.

The Fall of the City, written by Archibald MacLeish is the first American verse play written for radio. The broadcast (script and production value) were highly successful and lauded by most. The story is an allegory on the rise of Fascism.

Plot: A train mysteriously disappears on its journey from Liverpool to London in 1890. The only passengers are train engineer, a fireman, train guard and two South Americans. The engineer's dead body is the only clue, along with a letter from the United States that appears to be from the train guard. Authorities cannot find any evidence on the train.

After several guest appearances, in March 1945 Welles took over as producer, writer, host and star. However, he was fired after only seven episodes. Welles' suffered strained relations with the show's nominal director, Don Clark, complaining that Clark could be "very drunk" in the studio, whilst Welles annoyed Clark by effectively taking the directing out of his hands. Hello Americans aired from 1942 to 1943 on CBS Radio. It was directed and produced by Orson Welles. Created to promote inter-American understanding and friendship during World War II, the series aired Sundays at 8 p.m. ET beginning November 15, 1942. Its last broadcast was January 31, 1943. The series featured many of the actors from Welles' Mercury Theatre group. Getúlio Dornelles Vargas, nicknamed "the Father of the Poor," was a Brazilian lawyer and politician who served as the 14th and 17th president of Brazil, from 1930 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1954.

Two interviews in one post. First is his interview discussing the premiere of Citizen Kane at the Geary Theater in San Francisco. Dorothy Comingore is also interviewed, she played 'Susan Alexander Kane' in the film. The interview aired May 28, 1941. Second interview took place in Hollywood for the Mercury Wonder Show on KMTR. The Wonder Show was a magic, variety, and comedy performance stage production that Orson created for the military and the general public. Military soldiers and crowd participants are interviewed before talking to Marlene Dietrich, Joseph Cotten, and Rita Hayworth and Orson, just after their marriage. Orson host and narrates, The Black Museum, this first episode of the series is, The .22 Caliber Pistol AKA Little Blue 22. There are no known month and day dates for the series, but this episode aired in 1951. The Black Museum was based on real-life murder cases from the files of the actual Black Museum, a part of Scotland Yard. The program was aired from 1951 to 1952 and broadcast in the United States on the Mutual Broadcasting System and on Radio Luxembourg in Europe.

This week is the first production from, The Mercury Summer Theatre of the Air, with an adaptation of the Jules Verne novel from 1873, Around the World in Eighty Days. This is the musical short version, sometime later he did a non-musical version that was an hour. I strongly prefer the second version. Music by Cole Porter. Cast includes: Orson Welles (Fix), Arthur Margetson (Phileas Fogg), Larry Laurence (Passepartout), Mary Healy (Princess Aouda), Julie Warren (Molly Muggins). This is the greatly shortened version of the Broadway play that Welles produced. The expensive musical extravaganza opened on Broadway in May 1946 but closed after 75 performances. The Broadway show was considered a huge flop. After New York drama critic Robert Garland wrote disdainfully that the show had "everything but the kitchen sink", Welles had a kitchen sink brought to him onstage during his curtain speech. Although Broadway audiences reportedly loved Around the World, its precarious finances—and the theatre's inadequate air conditioning—could not sustain it through the summer, and Welles was forced to close it. He personally lost an estimated $320,000 (equivalent to $4,450,000 in 2021) on the production. Due to bad legal advice, he was unable to claim the loss on his taxes, and it took him many years to pay the debt. [some notes here from Wikipedia]

Les Misérables (The Bishop) aired July 23, 1937 is one of Orson Welles' first radio broadcast. A seven-part radio series broadcast from July 23 to September 3, 1937 airing on Friday nights at 10 PM EST, on the Mutual Network. Orson adapted the 1862 Victor Hugo novel, directed the series, and starred as Jean Valjean. Also starring his first wife Virginia Nicolson, along with Martin Gabel, Alice Frost, and long time acting partner and friend, Agnes Moorehead. Welles was only 22 at the time this broadcast, four years before the release of Citizen Kane.
