On The Mix is a Podcast created by Lindsay, who has a strong passion for everything music. You can consider this podcast like a big collection of mixtapes from your youth. We'll be rewinding the tape back and diving deep into bands and artists, and getting to know their story. Whatever genre you prefer, whether it be anything from 90s grunge to hip hop, there will always be something for everybody to enjoy!
Sublime is a 90s Ska-Punk band from California that made it big with songs like Santeria, Doin' Time, and What I Got - all featured on their self titled third album. It would prove to be their last, when singer Bradley Nowell died tragically at 28 while on tour only 2 months before the release of the album. Today we learn about the history of Ska, Sublime's history, and Bradley's passing.

Sam Cooke was known as the king of soul. He was rising in the charts as a prominent and highly successful black recording artist at a time in America in the 50s/60s when the Civil Rights Movement was taking shape more predominately. Sam was ever vocal about his strong disgust with segregation and he made a lot of moves to prove to people he was unafraid and entertaining the masses with his talented vocals. Unfortunately he was killed in December 1964 in a story that still to this day leaves more questions than answers. Today, we look at who Sam Cooke was and the details surrounding his death.

Seether is a post-grunge band most wellknown for their hit songs Broken, Remedy, and others. Their 2007 album Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces was one of their most popular albums, and one song on said album stood out among them all. Rise Above This was a song written about singer Shaun Morgan's brother and his battle with depression. Through the death of his brother, the struggle Shaun and the band faced to keep going was monumental. We know River Phoenix mostly as an actor in films like Stand By Me and My Own Private Idaho. But acting aside, music was his main passion. The year was 1982. The place, Seattle. This was long before the grunge movement would solidify the city's place in music history. The early 80s were still riding on the backs of the punk movement, and 17 year old guitar prodigy Duff McKagen would find himself interwoven with this underground band of likeminded kids rebelling against politics and their parents. They called themselves The Living. But just as they were making a splash, they went into the studio to record an album and it was never released. Until many years later. Hole was a grunge band from Seattle Washington in the 90s that was fronted by Courtney Love, the wife of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain. When Hole was looking for a replacement bassist they stumbled upon an underground Minnesota band named Janitor Joe and immediately knew that it's bassist, Kristen Pfaff, was the girl they were looking for. Kristen, who was an honor student and had a passion for music, found herself swept up in the chaos of Seattle and surrounded by people who didn't have her best interests at heart. Unfortunately, Kristen would be found dead of a drug overdose in her apartment only 2 months after Kurt Cobain's death in 1994. Today, we look at the details surrounding her fatal time in Seattle and looking for culpability. Was it simply an accident, or was it something more sinister?

Joan Jett never gave a damn about her bad reputation. She's remained an iconic female vocalist that proved women would dominate the once male run music industry, especially in the rock and punk genres. Brought up in a strictly religious family in Pennsylvania, she found her way to LA where she changed her name, chopped off her hair, and adored black leather jackets where she was reborn. The Runaways was her first major success with her all-girl rock group at only 15 years old with massive hits like "Cherry Bomb". Sibling duo Karen and Robert Carpenter formed a band together in the late 60s at a time when hard rock groups and psychedelia was the norm. The Carpenters were easy listening and produced soft pop ballads. They initially struggled to acquire a recording contract and fan base. Their string of hit singles like "Close to You", "Superstars", and "Rain Days and Mondays" propelled them into stardom. Karen was the drummer and she would sing behind her massive Ludwig kit for most of their career until she got pushed out of her shell and sang to the adoring crowd. Her sweet angelic voice made her unforgettable. Unfortunately, unknown to most of the world, Karen was slowly dying as a result from her longstanding easting disorder that she kept hidden. An unhappy marriage coupled with this, and her struggles with fame, makes her story a sad one. Jane's Addiction is a rock band that formed in LA in the 80s. They had just released their third album by 1991 and they were set to go on a final tour before their breakup. Singer Perry Farrell came up with the concept of Lollapalooza as a music and arts festival that toured many cities across the United States in the summer of 1991, solely for the tour of Jane's Addiction. From that moment on, the festival became an unexpected success and catapulted the music scene with similar music festivals such as Coachella. However, a few rocky years and the mainstream nature of Lollapalooza brought upon it's downfall, until it's rebirth in the 2000s. Bobby Caldwell is a musician that is most famous for his hit song "What You Won't Do For Love" that was released alongside his debut album in 1978. As part of the marketing strategy to promote his album, and as to not alienate his label's predominately black audience, they thought it was best to hide the fact that Bobby was actually white. It came as a massive shock when his fans saw him for the first time, expecting him to be black because of his singing voice alone! The year is 2004. Eric Prydz released an explosive number 1 dance tune called Call On Me with an equally famous music video that swept the world and has continued to make history. However, Eric Prydz along with Ministry of Sound stole that song along with others before him for notoriety. To understand this story we have to look back to the song's origins in Paris, France to see that Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk) and DJ Falcon together created the song and refused for it to be released mainstream. The Manic Street Preachers were the up and coming Welsh rock band that emerged in the 90s and swept the UK with their punk attitude. Richey Edwards was the face of the band, and he certainly made a name for himself on the scene with his looks and how he'd present himself in interviews. He spoke candidly about his struggles with mental health, and his tendency to self harm was a subject he let the world see plain as day. However to the surprise of his friends and family, Richey disappeared the day Manic was supposed to embark on their breakout American tour on February 1 1995. The story of Badfinger is one of triumph that quickly descends into a spiral of despair. A small band from Wales, they were touring around the UK performing Motown and Beatles covers until they were picked up by The Beatles themselves and became the first non-Beatles recording artist signed to their newly formed Apple Records. Paul McCartney gave the group their first big hit single "Come and Get It", and the rest of the members helped to boost their career. They would turn out more hit songs like "No Matter What", "Day After Day", and "Without You". However, this success would leave as quickly as it came in a contract gone wrong that would have devastating losses. It's 1990s in New York; the East Coast was thriving with up-and-coming rappers, DJs, and hip-hop groups trying to make a name for themselves. One of these groups was A Tribe Called Quest. It features Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. They were school friends in the Queens suburb that would go on to create music that would set the standard of hip-hop and rap for generations to come. They were also part of a collective of other Afrocentric artists called Native Tongues that make up De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifa, and others that used their music to speak on important social issues, and set a certain aesthetic that highlighted their heritage. The eclectic sampling of Quest's music, the unique flows of Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, as well as blending soul with jazz in their songs made them stand out as a force to be reckoned with. Today, we look at their story and the critically acclaimed albums they made.

Take yourself back to the early 2000s. Do you remember when skateboarding was really taking off in a major way unlike ever before? You may also remember a specific logo, the heartagram (a heart and a pentagram combined) that was making waves. Maybe you know someone that has that logo tattooed on them. Well, did you know the heartagram actually originated from the band HIM? On today's episode, we look at the story of Philadelphia pro skater Bam Margera and how he singlehandedly brought HIM out of Europe and into the fold of American culture in every capacity. The heartagram logo is one that ties together Bam and HIM not only in friendship, but in a smart business move that propelled the popularity of HIM in an extremely major way. 'Tis the season to be jolly, spend with with those you care about, and listen to some holiday tunes. Some of you might know this song and others have surely heard it but didn't know it's a Christmas song. The Pogues, a Celtic punk rock band founded in London, created the most bewildering Christmas song that blew the minds off of people in 1987. They managed to cause a stir regarding the censorship over the song's lyrical content that still is a hot topic of debate in the UK and Ireland every Christmas season. Fairytale of New York, a song about homesickness, getting drunk on Christmas Eve, and a tumultuous relationship that somehow manages to stick together through adversity. On today's episode we look at how the song came about and the lasting impression it's left.

We made it to the final installment of my Beatles series. Part 3 has the most in depth look at The Beatles last 3 albums; The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be. The boys are in turmoil and the end is in sight. Tensions arise, and members are beginning to walk out on the band during these last few years. The White Album was their most ambitious double album, Abbey Road is considered one of the most iconic albums of all time, and Let It Be was backed with a film that played up on the fighting that lead to their breakup. But not all was bad, they released some amazing music and performed their last ever live performance on the rooftop of the EMI building in London. Take a dive with me on this final journey of The Beatles.

This week, we're looking into The Prodigy. They are the kings of the UK big beat and electro music scene, masterfully blending elements of synth and rock to create a big atmospheric listening experience that transports you out to space. Their use of sampling and how they implement it into their music is also a factor that sets them apart from everyone else. The Prodigy started in a small bedroom and officially formed in Essex in 1990. Their breakout single "Charly" forever transformed rave and dance culture as we know it. The prodigy kid himself, Liam Howlett, produces and mixes all of the Prodigy songs with expertise. We also have dancer and singer Keith Flint, MC and singer Maxim, and dancer Leeroy Thornhill. Seattle was bursting at the seams with up and coming talent in the late 80s/early 90s that were making waves in the music scene. As we all know, there are four main bands at this time that defined the grunge era and what it stood for. One of those bands at front and center of it all is Nirvana; starring frontman and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bass player Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl. Nirvana has been heralded as the face of grunge, as they were one of the first rock bands in Seattle to flip the script and make it commercially big with their music. They were a hit with the new generation of young adults coming out of the hair metal era of the 80s and into something they never heard before. Today we take a look at the members before they became Nirvana, how they became so successful, from Bleach to In Utero and to Kurt Cobain's untimely death in 1994.
