Dr. Tom Boellstorff, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, has studied digital environments and human identity for decades. My interest in how identity is shaped by and through digital media and gaming naturally led me to Tom, whose work exists at the intersection of gender, race, technology, media, and material culture. I initially learned about him through his acclaimed research into virtual worlds like Second Life.
Tom's most recent book, Intellivision: How a Video Game System Battled Atari and Almost Bankrupted Barbie, explores the rise and fall of Intellivision and Mattel's foray into the gaming industry. It also examines Mattel’s marketing strategies as well as the blurring of work and play in the early video game industry of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Join Tom and me as we discuss the intersectionality of his research, his recent book on Intellivision, digital economies, the metaverse, and his upcoming project about climate change.
We hope you enjoy this conversation about the evolving role of technology in shaping human identity. Please share it if you find it engaging!

His projects, including Tokyo Nights and The Last Game Centers, explore themes of nostalgia, decay, and architectural beauty. His website, VictorAlonso.es, showcases his rich portfolio and latest projects.

Probably the biggest tournament in the FGC happened over the weekend. DreamHack Dallas 2024— which was also a Tekken World Tour event and Esports World Qualifier Event which will take place in Saudi Arabia for $1,000,000 prize pool in Street Fighter and Tekken.
Congrats to RB|Gachikun (Rashid) for winning Street Fighter 6
and Congrats to Yamasa|Nobi (Dragunov) for winning Tekken 8
You can see the full results for DreamHack Dallas here.
Also there was a crazy moment where JDCR (South Korea) had to replay his match against AK (Philippines), because when he was one hit away from winning, a random controller connected to the PS5 and this caused them to replay the match, which AK then one. This replay sent Twitter (X) into a frenzy. You can watch the video above or see our tweet about this here. As a result, JDCR did not qualify for the Esports World Cup. Alex Jebailey, TO issued an apology for the unfortunate situation.**
Even Kayane, iconic French Fighting game player brought attention to the fact that not enough of the matches from French sponsored teams were broadcasted to the world during DreamHack. JDCR is sponsored by French team, Karmine Corp.
We hope JDCR the best in future tournaments; he is a very well respected player.

Fabricator and inventor Kenny Vang talks with Arcade Press about the life journey that brought him to make a brand new Arcade Controller format for fighting games.
Kenny tells his story— using gaming as an escape from abuse as a child being locked in a cellar by his mother; he found his solitude in gaming; he started learning how to take things apart at an early age and would sneak to play games. Kenny eventually studied art and taught himself how to build arcades and develop his own games. Kenny even made a Mayweather vs Pacquiao video game and a Conan o Brien Gameboy title that Kenny gifted to Conan in Chicago.
“The only way you can have a peace of mind is that you forgive.” - Kenny Vang
“If you don’t know your mother or your father…you still have to forgive them..”

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already familiar with the genre-defying, cultural contextualist/deconstructionist that is Virgil Abloh. A brilliant designer and intellectual that pushed the boundaries of design, and fashion… leaving us all too soon. Virgil drew from decades of skateboarding, hip-hop, and crossover aesthetics as well as avant-garde and conceptual art movements.
I’ve met Virgil a couple of times, and I’ve always been impressed with his attention to detail and ability to be present even when managing what seems to be an infinite number of ideas.
Virgil means the world to Arcade Press… here is our podcast episode dedicated to the artist. You can watch the video version below:

Continuing our exploration into the 90s gaming empire that was Midway, we knew we had to get in touch with the guy who wrote the book on NBA JAM.
In 2019, Reyan Ali (with Boss Fight Books) penned the definitive dive into everything that is NBA Jam.
Released in 1993 and best known for its gravity-defying dunks and world-famous “Boomshakalaka!” voice by the unforgettable Tim Kitzkrow.
If you love the 90s and the NBA, then you know all about NBA Jam. Enjoy our conversation with the man who investigated the whole story about an incredible game that changed pop culture forever… Please sit back and enjoy our discussion about Arcades, pop culture, and of course, NBA Jam.
When NBA Jam dunked its way into arcades in 1993, players discovered just how fun basketball can be when freed from rules, refs, and gravity itself. But just a few years after Midway's billion-dollar hit conquered the world, Midway, publisher Acclaim, and video arcades themselves fell off the map. How did a simple two-on-two basketball game become MVP of the arcade, and how did this champ lose its title?
Journalist Reyan Ali dives deep into the saga, tracking the people and decisions that shaped the series. You'll get to know mischievous Jam architect Mark Turmell, go inside Midway's Chicago office where hungry young talent tapped into cutting-edge tech, and explore the sequels, spin-offs, and tributes that came in the game's wake…. - NBA JAM [Amazon]

Ofir Rosen’s work caught my eye with the reveal of his Terrarium Hitbox…
..Not only was his unique take on the device refreshing, but Ofir reminded me of the potential that great hardware can have on the gameplay experience.
I started to look more into Ofir’s work, sparking new possibilities for users and the competitive spaces that players engage in battle. Classic titles like Tekken, Street Fighter, and Guilty Gear could all use a lush and organic backdrop from time to time.
Terrarium Hitbox by Ofir Rosen
The hitbox is a device made mostly for fighting games that seek an alternative to the classic joystick + button combination players are used to. With the hitbox, there is no “stick”; just buttons. This buttons-only mechanism allows for some very unique design options, increases potential for portability, and even increases command input accuracy for some.
“As the best all-button arcade controller in the world, the core advantage of the Hit Box is that you have more deliberate control over your game, helping you make fewer mistakes in a match.” - Hitbox Arcade
Ofir’s work manages to pose thought provoking questions around input devices, user experience, and empathy in relation to technology. With the Terrarium Hitbox, these themes have already inspired more fightstick builders.
The Terrarium Hitbox plays with the effects of plants on human mood, and cognitive function, while also creating a relationship of care between the user, and the input device. By doing this it aims to create a more positive and caring environment for the user, in a space that's historically fairly toxic. - Ofir Rosen via @ofirrosen_
We caught up with Ofir to learn more about his ideas around input devices, fighting games, art, tech, and his future inventions. Listen to the full conversation above.

Tyler Bushnell is the CEO and mastermind of Polycade.
He’s also the son of Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari (and Chuck E. Cheese).
Still, Tyler finds ways to electrify and innovate on a long legacy of pioneering new gaming tech— this time, he leads Polycade and their mission to make gaming a Social Experience again. This same focus on building relationships and experiences through play is partly what made Pong such a massive hit in the 1970s.
Polycade makes a variety of arcade-styled hardware and software that emphasizes making gaming a social, in-person, and tactile. You’ve probably already seen their sleek Polycade arcade machines online, or maybe you’ve seen them in-person at your local bar or streetwear store. Perhaps you’ve seen them being played by celebrities like Snoop Dog, Lil John, Steve Aoki and 2Chainz just to name a few. Each Polycade cabinet is carefully crafted and aesthetically impressive; each one could (and should) be in an art museum.
We’ve been lucky enough to spend several minutes with Tyler to find out what he’s been up to recently, how his company has dealt with the challenges of the pandemic, and what we can expect from the future forward brand.
