5 tips to curate your online social media feed
did you know that 80% of the content in social media today is made by less than 10 percent of users?
But also, did you know that only 10% of users actually interact with content?
Which means, if you think about the actual content that’s “blowing up”, it may not truly be what the populace believes…
With that said, what are some ways we can curate our own social media to make it more useful for us?
- Follow accounts that create content that aligns with your values and interests.
- Just be mindful not to create an echo chamber.
- It might be interesting to understand both sides of an argument, but if you find the accounts bring you more frustration, then disconnect them in some way
- Utilize the "mute" and "unfollow" features to remove posts that don't bring you joy or value or education.
- Hide Accounts - hide without unfollowing
- Temporary mute like for 30 days.
- Take breaks from social media when needed to help keep a healthy balance in your life.
- What are some ways you can recognize this is needed?
- What are some thing we could do when taking breaks (hike, walk, sit by firepit)
- Curate a list of accounts that you can look to for inspiration and positive messages.
- But what if it’s already overrun with garbage?
- Start a new account
- Reset your feed

- Engage with content that resonates with you, by liking, commenting and sharing posts that you appreciate.
Of course you could completely remove yourself from social media as well. But it seems there are ways you can still reap the benefits of new technologies, learn from others, doing it in a more healthy way.

Today we’re digging deep into airplane safety with the intention of conveying and dispelling often misunderstood myths. As well, we’re also going to share a bit about what those flight attendants are thinking and why. And we’ll finish up for the preparedness-minded people with the ultimate question - what is the best and safest seat on the plane.

Collective illusions — false assumptions about society that many people share — have existed for thousands of years in many different ways. Today, because of social media and modern technology, they have become even more common.
One example of a collective illusion is the commonly held belief that everyone wants fame, wealth, and power. That’s not true. Most of us want lives of purpose and meaning. But because of false assumptions, many of us spend our lives chasing things that won’t fulfill us.

**Today we’ll be talking through a great little adventure I had a couple of years back while hiking in colorado.
So what are some applications we can take from this Storytime?**
First on a positive note, always keep in mind how important it can be to practice what you preach. How else will we learn if and how the contents of our bug out bags work if we never use them? Taking a long hike, even a multi day hike is a great way to test out some of the components of our bug out bags.C**onsider looking at weather and conditions ahead of a trip - I’m sure I still would have gone, even if I’d heard about a foot of snow at the top. But my fellow traveler? He may have either reconsidered the trip, or he may have made additional preparations. Better shoes, more water, maybe some food? But then, this also could have been his way of presenting himself with a scenario and seeing how he responds and gets through it.
Consider the possibility of running into others and be prepared to help. Now there is always the possibility of meeting others on a trail while hiking or biking or just in general while traveling. And in many cases, we’re hard pressed enough to want to carry food and other supplies just for ourselves. But when measuring out the weight of adding an extra power bar, or another life straw water filter, consider how important having the means to help others might be. After all, one is none and two is one, right? This also could mean you yourself might have something that another person might really benefit from.
Consider that even though we may feel better hiking or biking alone - I certainly do. Almost always we can be better together. Having multiple people in an event to support each other - physically, mentally, emotionally can be very important, and can mean the difference between the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.**

Hey there GenXers. Matt Marshall here checkin in again. It’s been a while, and I’m returning from a long hiatus this summer with a fresh approach to prepping. I’ve traveled seemingly non-stop since May. Ive collected new ideas from the world of hiking and travel and overall preparedness.
GenXTalkin on Being Prepared was built with the plan in mind to help those unfamiliar with prepping become more aware; More aware of things that can cause concern, frustration or even fear, whether those things be simply running out of gas, a child tripping over a crack in the sidewalk, or something more … life changing.
We’d really like this channel to be a resource anyone can use to enter into the world of preparedness. Maybe even those who've been prepping for a while can learn something important along the way. But it should also be considered multi-directional. Meaning we don’t know everything, and we’d love to hear others’ thoughts and ideas on best ways to prepare and build a community of like minded folks.
But let’s go back to basics for a moment… Why prepare? For me, the need to prepare primarily comes from a lifetime of dealing with difficult situations and having to think and act my way through them with the least amount of negative effects, whether they be physical, emotional, spiritual or mental.
I’d like to share a few stories from my life when preparedness, or lack thereof, was important in one form or another.

- Identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses of self/family

- Physical limitations
- Can I lift 100 lbs
- Can I carry 50 lbs for distance on my back
- Do I have strong self defense
- Sit Awareness planning
- Location and likelihood of types of events
- What terrain might I be dealing with
- Prioritize your needs
Personal regimens?
- Wish I could do more
- Walk 3-6 miles per day in evening
- Hike whenever possible in different seasons
- Always looking for a change in scenery
- Tie in this type of exercise/practice with other things - like taking nature videos
- Muscle building - very important as the bones start to age
- Comparing sisters in family
- Mind building - important as the brain starts to age
- Comparing family members

- How often do you go camping
- How often do you test your water filters

GXT-STORY-EP04 Desert Caverns
Our story today deals with good college buddies Tommy, John, Jason and their girlfriends Jenny, Casi, and Kiersa. These fine American youth just got through their junior year at Shamon U in NEW YORK CITY! They have the opportunity – time, space, and money-wise – and they’ve chosen to travel to the famous Desert Caverns of northern New Mexico (A FICTIONAL NATIONAL MONUMENT intended to seem a lot like Carlsbad Caverns)
[In reality, part of this scenario strongly resembles something I experienced with friends while hiking in the western US.]
They plan their flights and pack their bags. Figuring they are going to the hot desert they all mostly pack shorts and short sleeve tops and shirts. Figuring they might do a bit of hiking on some trails, they take small back packs with pockets for a water bottle.
The group arrived in Albuquerque, NM and rented a car to drive to the Desert Caverns – a three-and-a-half-hour drive.
The townsfolk are friendly with tourists. And at the local greasy spoon called Stop and Puke, they got advice on where to park, where to hike, where to camp, and where to go for the best views.

For today’s show, I thought we’d spend some time digging into the details around Active Shooters. I recently attended a webinar presented by a team of people including multiple subject matter experts from private organizations as well as FBI and former FBI members. This was a very well put together set of presentations. It flowed in a very clear pattern of Preparation, Action and Recovery, or P.A.R.
It hit me while I was in the middle of the webinar that our audience, being primarily GenX, would be perfect beneficiaries of the information. Many of us are in positions of management, supervisory, executive level, or heck even business owners. And you’ll see when we review the numbers how much of these activities actually occur in places of business. So it’s important to be aware of what it looks like when and how Mass Shootings and Active shooter events occur.

In the most recent GenXTalkin:Storytime, Ed and Matt review an interesting story and scenario involving a couple who’ve recognized a very difficult event occurring, the lack of fuel. We would technically refer to this as more of a Hi Impact, Low Frequency type of event. But the effects of such an event could be significant to just about everyone throughout the country and possibly the world.
The US economy revolves around the concept of Cheap Oil prices so that business can be done. Airlines, trucking, electric trains, a cities infrastructure, heat, and of course our vehicles, would all be affected. And these could potentially cascade into more significant losses of jobs, access to food and medicine.
Although this is just fiction, it does show a need for the general populace to emphasize preparedness in their day to day lives. We hope it helps to understand how lived could be affected. Enjoy.

Well thank you GenXers for joining us on one last show before the end of the year. This is a special show with two fantastic folks in my life. The goal was to make it an exciting episode that shows having a prepared mindset doesn’t necessarily mean we have to be all serious. But that we can also make it fun.
In all honesty, we experienced quite a few technical difficulties, but we wanted to share the results and show how we can still respond well when challenges arise. We hope you enjoy it.
Well what can I say, I’m so excited! Kristin and I recently went on an anniversary trip to Nashville and we had the pleasure of staying at Travis’ Airbnb…. It’s a very quick jaunt to downtown with Broadway and that famous Nashville music scene, as well as centennial park with the life sized replica of the Parthenon from Greece, and really just about any other place you might be interested in seeing in Nashville (sorry folks his place is not quite on the market yet on Airbnb)
But while we were there, Travis was getting ready to go out for a concert… and he showed us this party preparedness pack. There've been struggle for sure, but through it all she's maintained her stedfast faith in God to help her through it.

Now I'm going to go over the 4 firearms safety rules.
Here we go.
Number one.
All weapons are always loaded.
Let me say again, Number one, all weapons are always loaded.
Never assume otherwise
never pick up and handle a firearm and assume and assume its not loaded.
You pick it up.
You don't know how to unload it.
Don't bother, Handling it.
To make sure it's unloaded, you physically and visually check that chamber.
In most cases you can try to do it basically as will look in there and stick your finger in there.
Make sure there's nothing in the chamber, it's unloaded,
number one All weapons are always loaded
Number two Never pointThe barrel or muzzle end of any firearm at anyone or anything you are not willing to destroy.
You already know it’s loaded
You’ve got a firearm in your hand.
It is of upmost importance and gravitas that you understand this is not a toy.
This is not a game.
This is not Halo or Call of Duty.
You hold in your hands, an instrument of death.
Guns don't kill people, People kill people and in some cases stupid people kill people with guns because they didn't Abide by their full Firearm safety rules in most cases.
Right, so anyway.
Number two never point The muzzle or barrel end of any firearm at anyone or anything you are not willing to destroy.
Any firearms range Indoor outdoor You're always almost either pointing up or pointing down.
Number three Keep a straight trigger.
You see it in all the movies.
It's cool they got a straight trigger finger.
Always keep a straight trigger finger.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and more, ready to engage or fire.
And #4. be sure of your target.
Check your target and check your background.
Don't lean it and join it and stick your firearm around the corner and just start shooting.
So again in Conclusion there's your 4 firearms safety rules.
Number one.
All weapons are always loaded. Never assume otherwise.
Number two
never point the muzzle or barrel end of any firearm, at anyone or anything you are not willing to destroy.
Number three
keep a straight trigger finger and keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target

Planning Your Communications
Most important here is understanding how important it is to have proper communications. Without communications, how will we know:
where to meet up
when to meet up
what do we do when the first meet up location fails
What are our next steps
what direction I'm headed
or simply... is my family OK?
Start with the basics for the Communications Plan. First, collect important information such as phone numbers; for each other, for friends and family, for doctors, hospitals, dentists, ob-gyn, etc. Collect information around children's school (including college), and adult workplace emergency plans. Where will the kids be taken (and how, by bus?) in a time of emergency? Always include out of town contacts to use as go-between during large events, and establish a time to check in at regular intervals.
establish meeting places ahead of time for additional purposes.
Indoor - in case of extreme weather, such as tornadoes
In your neighborhood - like the neighbor's front porch in case you can't get into your home
Outside your neighborhood - to meet up if you're not at home during emergencies and cannot cannot get there
Outside your own town or city, or even state or region - for cases in which you cannot get home and you've been instructed to evacuate the area
Make small laminated sheets for each to hold in a wallet, purse or backpack. Having this information handy will allow each family member to respond well and recover faster.
Consider adding a couple of apps to your smartphone. Many of these groups create their own smartphone apps, but they also have directed us to the following:

One of the problems that often occurs during natural disasters is that cell phone services get "clogged". So, start with just texting instead.
Try to find additional locations at which you can connect to the internet via WIFI. Of course, you want to make sure this is actually a free service. Very frustrating when you're in the midst of an emergency, and you have to enter a credit card, or email information to gain access. Also, a good reason to plan this ahead is you also want the ability to recognize the WIFI network you're using. Whether emergency or not, you never want to transmit your personal data, unprotected by VPN, across an unknown WIFI network!
Lastly, you should come to realize that preparedness does not stop at the end of National Preparedness Month... Keep going, and remember that "practice makes PROGRESS!"

Hey there all you GenXers. Great to be back again for an exciting show on Making Plans for Preparedness. I’m Matt Marshall overall preparedness enthusiast… and I’m here to remind us all with preparedness comes comfort, with preparedness comes peace, something we could all use a bit more of…
With all that said,. Onto the show! It is National Preparedness Month, and that mainly means we focus on two things, making a plan and creating a go bag. We’ve spent some time in a couple of past episodes talking about the different types of bags; edc, go-bag and bug out bags, and the get home safe bag. And for sure we’ll dig deeper into these in future episodes.
For today we’re focusing on the other half, making a plan.
I think one of the important concepts around making a plan is first to realize it’s never just one plan at all!
Fire escape plan
Shelter In place plan
Evacuation route planning
Water collection plan
Communications plan
Financial plan
This I’m sure is one of the reasons it can take a while to make a plan - when you consider... all the plans.
Planning to Shelter In Place
For Shelter in place I personally think, and I believe most preparedness-minded people walk this same path, that it’s important to first define what are your greatest threats. If you know what you and your community are most at risk of encountering, then you can more easily prepare to combat them.
We review the types of threats:
- High Impact, High Frequency
- High Impact, Low Frequency
- Low Impact, High Frequency
- Low Impact, Low Frequency
Planning to Evacuate or Get Out Quick
The government recommends having a Bugout, or Go Bag in the event you have to get away from home quickly. And most preparedness minded organizations add onto this in saying, within 15 minutes, you should be ready to go with all you need for at least 72 hours, but supplies for one week is even better.
As well, if you travel for work, get in the habit of doing this in hotels, airports and your temporary place of work. Good to at least get a basic idea of layouts.
Next, create a fire escape plan at home. Also consider where your gathering points might be staged. There should be two, one right outside the house (near a tree) and one should be slightly further away, like a neighbor's front porch.

Hey there genx family. Our show today is meant to serve as a tribute and a time of reflection. Matt and Ed are joined by Matt's wife Kristin to take part in this special episode. She will share some additional thoughts on what the attacks meant to her, and to our family.
This special episode began as a concept, when Ed and I first started the whole podcast adventure. Ed realized how close we were to the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America… and what better way to talk preparedness for a nation, then to remember one of the worst attacks we’ve ever experienced.

GenXTalking On Being Prepared Interviews Charles (Chuck) Young. Chuck is a long time friend of our host Ed Wasson. Churck served as a Marine, and in law enforcement for oveer 20 years. With Chuck's background, he lend a powerful word to the next installment of the Series of September 11 Remembrance and Reflection episodes.
Chuck was on the ground within about 5 minutes of the plane hitting the Pentagon. It was a sometimes emotional discussion, the helped us to understand that there really are people that are driven to run toward danger.

GenXTalking On Being Prepared Interviews Darren Wisdom. Darren is a long time friend of our host Ed Wasson, and his position as Naval Military Intelligence Officer provides a great resource for our first in this series of September 11 Remembrance and Reflection episodes.

In one of our recent shows we reviewed the several different types of bags one could build or buy to start the process of becoming more prepared. We thought we’d take some time in this episode to review some details of what goes into building a bag, and maybe even answer the question why.
Of course there could be a lot of bleed over between the several different types of kits, so lets consider some of the fundamentals. Within every kit, no matter the name or purpose, we should consider the survival rule of threes, and we’ll bring these up fairly regularly throughout the existence of this podcast.
- A person can survive 3 min without air
- 3 hours in a harsh environment, extreme hot or cold
- 3 days without water
- And 3 weeks without food
The reason we start from this framework is to establish a baseline of need for every situation no matter what it is.

Hello again and welcome back to the next installment of Unboxed Prepping brought to you by the team at GenXTalkin - on being prepared.

It’s the Head for Survival Triangular Bandana and along with it comes a couple of really nice, larger safety pins. All of it folded up nicely in a little zip locked packet. It set me back about 12 bucks.
For those of us with any sort of medical, or even just your simple first aid training, if you think triangle bandage you already get a sense of what this looks like. It’s an Isosceles shaped triangle with the long side being about 52 inches and the short, equal sides being 39 inches. Of course it works perfectly for its more common first aid purposes. Namely:
Sling to stabilize an arm or support a shoulder injury
- Head cover for injury or keeping the head out of the elements
- Stabilizing sprained ankle, Using in conjunction with harder item to splint leg or arm breaks
- Possible tourniquet or means to slow bleeding down
- Covering an injured eye
- Or holding a broken jaw in place
- Pre-filtering water
- A Simple face mask
- it can be used as cordage
- or tinder for fire starting
Printed on these little beauties is a whole host of survival concepts. It’s broken down into sections for:
Navigation, Knots, Signaling, Fire starting, Water collection and purification, And shelter
Each section contains very clear instructions on how to perform steps to success in these areas. For instance, within the Signaling section, it breaks down ideas on how to best use a cell phone in urgent situations. It also explains how many signal fires (three) you should build and in what shape… a triangle of course.
There’s a section on ground signaling, offering recommendations on how big to make an SOS sign on the ground - think about 18 foot tall letters!!! And when trying to hail a searching aircraft, make sure you wave frantically, not friendly. If you can, wave with a bright colored cloth… did I mention this triangle bandage is bright orange!!
Also within signaling, it breaks down ideas for SIGHT signals (SOS in Morse code) versus SOUND signals - think whistling or banging metal objects together. These sounds travel farther or course. And this is just the section for signaling.
