Part 2 of our interview with World Champion Athlete Jamie Baulch.
In this part, Jamie talks about what it was like training with the biggest starts of world athletics - Frankie Fredericks, Colin Jackson and Linford Christie - and how one particular track session convinced him he was destined to win gold.

Jamie Baulch is a world champion athlete and Olympic silver medallist. A 400m runner of genuine world class, he's trained with, competed against and beaten some of the biggest names in Athletics.
But there is so much more to just the medals with this guy. Adopted by a family in South Wales, he's a proud Welshman, but his story begins in England and a young single mother who felt unable to raise him and gave him up so he could gave a better chance in life.
Decades later, he set out to find both his genetic mother and father in two separate award-winning documentaries for the BBC. What he found, and the journey of discovery and identity he went on, make for fascinating and emotional stories which he shares here with Jon.
We also get to hear incredible insights into the mind of a champion. How he went from under-achieving as nailed-on favourite... to a mindset switch that enabled him to make winning a World Championship gold medal look like the easiest thing in the world.
And then there's the story of how it only truly dawned on him that he was the fastest man in the world... while pushing a shopping trolley around a supermarket in Cwmbran.
This interview was so full of good stuff that we have split it over two episodes. This is Part 1, Part 2 will follow a week later. Both episodes contain amazing stories from Jamie's life - from what made him, to the bits of himself he discovered uncovering his roots... to the mindset of a world-beater.

Phil is brilliant at picking out and sharing lessons and insights from all the stages of his career. His playing days for Llanelli and Wales taught him how teams come together through shared identity and collective purpose.
Management roles at Leeds, Cardiff and Namibia shaped his simple "3 C's" plan for success - communication, connection and collaboration.
Now, as he has risen through the ranks of world sport, he is able to analyse the bigger picture and shares valuable advice on how to navigate the politics of top-of-industry boardrooms to deliver real change and progress.
Lawrence Khen is a South Wales entreprenuer who owns 35 properties and also runs his own mentoring and consultancy business Foresight Property Partners.
Born to a Syrian refugee father and a British mother, Lawrence had a tough but formative and enjoyable childhood growing up in working class Swansea.
He learnt to earn and hustle from his father - traits that have stayed with him in a career that has included painting and decorating, being an international corporate high-flyer with Aldi and even stock trading.
But Lawrence's incessant drive to push himself has led him to the brink of physical and mental disintegration and he has had to refocus his life.
Severe health issues forced him to adapt and plan, but he never lost his streetwise business instincts and he is a great example of self-reliance and ingenuity.
We never know when challenges will come to us, and they may leave us searching for answers... but Lawrence's story teaches us the value of graft, strategic thinking, adaptability and purpose.
The Crack On podcast had a re-boot in 2023. We started doing face-to-face interviews in Jon's home instead of remote recordings and moved to a monthly format.
The result has been a series of brilliant guests and fascinating in-depth conversations. The feedback we've had has been fantastic and we're really happy with the way the podcast is growing and what it means to people - thank you.
We all have challenges in life - hearing how others managed to navigate through theirs and "crack on" can inspire and teach us valuable lessons.

Colin Charvis is a Welsh Rugby legend. He pulled on the red jersey 94 times, captaining the team through a vital period of growth. A proud servant of Swansea and with experience of playing in France and for the British and Irish Lions, Colin has had a glittering rugby career.
But, like anyone, he has faced challenges. His childhood brought loss and adversity. He has faced serious injury, discrimination and criticism in his time in the game. His transition from professional sports player to businessperson has brought a whole new set of highs and lows.
In this interview Colin talks openly and honestly to Jon about his life and career. He shares a vast amount of hard-learned wisdom that anyone listening can apply to their own lives.
There are fascinating insights into motivation, leadership and teamwork. There are also moments of real emotion as Colin explores the early life lessons that shaped him as a person (and player) of the utmost character and integrity.
This interview was of such length and quality that we have decided to run it across two parts. This is Part 1, Part 2 will be released a week later.
Andrew Jenkins was pronounced dead by the side of the road, aged 21, after a horrific car accident. But he didn't die... and overcoming his physical injuries was just the start of his battle.
Growing up in a traditional Welsh valleys family with rugby high on the agenda (and talking about feelings low on the priority list) meant Andrew was ill-equipped to handle his trauma's impact on his mental health.
For 20 years he struggled, with the verdict (from himself and others) being that he was never the same after the crash.
But recently he has had a transformation - one which has given him a purpose to share his story and help others facing similar issues. Through reflection, research, counselling and the support of key loved ones in his life, Andrew has embraced a growth mindset and gone from closed to open.
He has had some life-changing difficult conversations, including ones with the surgeon who saved his life, his parents and his son.
He shares his story here with Jon in a powerful and touching episode. There is empathy, advice and vital insights here for anyone who is struggling mentally.
Radio DJ, TV Presenter and total Cardiff legend... Polly James is known for her charisma, talent and uncanny ability to live life at 100 miles per hour all the time.
At her happiest on the radio, interviewing sports stars or at the darts... she has carved out an impressive media career for herself. Despite an adventurous outlook on everything, her path always seems to circle back to Cardiff - a city she loves... and that certainly loves her back.
In this buoyant and life-affirming conversation, Jon and Polly talk about her formative years, how athletics built her work ethic and a passion for preparation. Rhys Thomas is a former Welsh International Rugby player who had his career suddenly ended by a heart attack, then spent the subsequent years on a self-destructive path... before turning his life around.
In last episode's Part 1 of this intense and heartfelt interview, Rhys spoke about his life and career up to the point of the heart attack.
Here, in Part 2, Rhys shares his incredible rollercoaster journey from the heart attack onwards. The loss of identity, the abandonment of hope, the struggles with alcohol and the self-denial of the problems he so clearly had...
Then, an intervention from his friends and family led to a life-changing time in rehab and a years-long journey of self-discovery and self-improvement (all the time being open to outside help as he never was before).
He is now able to answer the question "Who is Rhys Thomas?" and his perspective, growth and positivity are truly inspirational.
His story and how he turned it around will make you ask questions of yourself and also give you the tools to potentially take the first steps on your own transformation.
Ex-Welsh Rugby International Rhys Thomas shares his incredible story. From growing up in South Africa, to coming through the youth ranks in Wales and ending up with it all - international caps, money, family, friends and a career playing the sport he loved.
...but everything changed in an instant.
A massive heart attack ended his career and put him on a years-long journey of self-destruction. He has recently built his life back up from rock bottom and learnt valuable lessons that he shares with Jon in this episode.
This is a candid, raw, shocking, sad, inspirational and uplifting listen all at the same time.

He's now back in Wales making documentaries and leading investigations that bring about real change. There's no better example than his recent report on the WRU that revealed sexism and misogyny at the heart of the organisation and triggered resignations, inquiries and forced the institution to modernise.
Wyre shares his story with Jon, giving particularly valuable insights into how to navigate a complex and competitive industry such as the media. He also talks passionately about seeking advice, the power of perseverance and how to be brave enough to take opportunities when they present themselves.

Known for bringing craft beer to the mainstream, they have expanded internationally as well as branching out into food, cutting edge customer experience and even hotels. Not without controversy, they are a brand with a strong identity - it's hard not to have an opinion on BrewDog.
James Brown is CEO of BrewDog Bars and is a senior figure at the company. He started his career as a teenager in Scotland chopping potatoes at a local chippy... and a lifelong passion for hospitality took root. In this episode, James invites Jon to BrewDog's own podcast studio that they have built in their London offices at Waterloo. James and Jon discuss what makes hospitality such a character-building sector to work in. From learning what makes customers happy (and unhappy), to the kind of bizarre scrapes only people in this industry find themselves in (like accidentally disabling a whole city's mobile phone service in an attempt to turn off the venue entrance lights).
Exploring the Crack On spirit, Jon and James discuss what lessons (and indeed opportunities) COVID presented to the industry and the people who worked within it. Resilience was tested and a new spirit of co-operation emerged to help the sector survive.
Finally, James talks about his innovative tech solution for digital tipping - Tipjar. In his honest reflection on the challenges he has faced, and mistakes made along the way to eventual success, there are valuable lessons for anyone with entrepreneurial ambition and the desire to innovate and make a positive difference.
Stifyn Parri - also known as Mr Producer, or Mr P - is a Welsh legend of The Arts. His story of a drive and desire to progress reveals true Crack On spirit.
Growing up in North Wales, Stifyn knew from an early age that he wanted to perform. The vision was always there, but many barriers stood in his way. Through overcoming huge odds to gain a place at a top London drama school, to facing challenges from the acting community in Wales and battling attitudes and characters that were blocking him... Stifyn always found a way.
This episode of The Crack On Podcast contains so many lessons about determination, self-belief, passion and lateral thinking. Stifyn was never arrogant, but he was fiercely gritty, single-minded and goal-oriented. If he didn't know how to do something, he figured it out and if there was someone he needed to meet, he found a way to magically bump into them.
This DNA of effort and positivity that runs through Stifyn's life explains the heights he reached - stardom on TV and in the West End and then a second career as the driving force behind a string of high profile events. He got himself to the front of the queue to be the Creative Producer for the opening of the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, then harnessed that success to land the role as Creative Director for the opening of one of Wales' greatest ever global events - The Ryder Cup.
In the 1980's Stifyn found himself at the forefront of the Gay Rights movement (before he had even come out himself) and his experiences have made him a key figure in the LGBTQ+ community.
Stifyn's story is one of achievement, character, self-knowledge and a strong desire to get the best out of life for himself and the community around him. This is an instructive, inspiring and uplifting listen.

Lucy Cohen is the co-founder of Mazuma, a South Wales founded company that helps small and medium size businesses stay on top of their accounting and tax responsibilities. Ahead of its time, it paved the way for cloud-based services like Quickbooks... before the cloud even existed!
An incredibly successful woman, Lucy explains to Jon in this interview where her drive, determination and purpose come from. She's learnt everything she knows about business through experience and there have been real highs and lows. She discusses what led her and her co-founder to seriously question whether their business could survive and imparts vital advice to any entrepreneur about taking a moment to acknowledge how far you have come.
Lucy's resilience has been tested with a recent health scare but she has used it - as she does everything in life - as an opportunity, learning experience and a springboard for positivity. Lucy keeps racking up the achievements. She has represented Wales and GB at weightlifting, written a best-selling book and delivered a campaign that changed the NHS's policy on contraception and pain management.
There are huge life lessons for everyone in this episode. How to not fall for hustle culture. How to find your purpose. How to make do and scrap with a "done over perfect" approach that can win out over VC-inflated budgets. Plus, how to find the "win" in any situation, however negative things may appear on first impressions.

Cardiff legend Chris Macnamara came up from very little, learning his business skills through experience having started working at the age of 14. After working multiple jobs to make ends meet and provide for his young family, a chance encounter with an old school friend inspired Chris to become a car salesman. He excelled and quickly rose to the top of his profession. But buying his first pair of "proper" shoes was a transformative experience for Chris. He couldn't resist the opportunity to follow his passion (and desire to start his own local business in his home city of Cardiff). The Brogue Trader was born.
In this episode we pick up the story as Chris is trying to get The Brogue Trader off the ground. He has a name, and a vision... but very little else. How he goes about building the company is a story of perseverance, values and enthusiasm. The business lessons (and life lessons) in this story are plentiful and powerful. It's impossible to listen to this episode without learning something that will help you either now or in the future.

Damian Joseph Bridgeman is a man with vastly varied talents and experience. Damian has worked in all sectors of public and private business, government, education, media and the NHS. Jason joined British Airways, now GE at the age of 17 as an apprentice, then qualifying to become a Mechanical Aircraft Engineer, spending 13 years in the industry. In 2001 he decided to change direction and became heavily involved with the family business, helping it to become UK award winning, the largest in Wales, and one of the biggest coach companies in the UK still maintaining its high level of service delivery and safety. He was involved heavily in all aspects of the business but he now only oversees his award winning National Express operation, Local Bus Service and Portbyhan Hotel, Looe.
In 2012 he was awarded the Institute of Directors’ Family Director of the Year Wales award, and was runner- up in the UK then in 2017, he was extremely humbled and honoured to be officially announced as the High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan 2020/21. All this and so much more......enjoy!!!!
In February 2012 Rhian had just returned to work as a P.E. teacher after having my youngest son George when tragedy struck my family. George died suddenly with no sign of illness in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant on the 22nd February. Just days later Paul, her husband and the Daddy to her three children, took his own life traumatised by the loss of their son. The tragedy of experiencing the sudden death of a child was compounded by the situation my husband and she found herself in at the hospital, having nowhere to privately grieve and say goodbye to our son.
The family were offered no support and we were left to deal with the loss of both Paul and George alone. Motivated by a desire to ensure others would not have the same devastating experience after losing a child suddenly in hospital, she set up the child bereavement charity ‘2 Wish Upon a Star’. To date the charity has raised over £1,000,000 exclusively from small public donations and local fundraising and 2 Wish Upon A Star is now an All Wales organisation helping hundreds of families every year who experience sudden and traumatic loss. Rhian is also very passionate about mental health and I regularly speak about my own struggles since losing my boys. I took part in a BBC documentary in 2017 ‘Mind Over Marathon’ raising awareness of mental health and I often speak out about mental health in men and following sudden bereavement. Rhian now work full time at 2 Wish Upon A Star and is determined that every family in Wales who loses a child suddenly receives the support they truly deserve. The love and pride she has for her boys, along with her drive to succeed has seen the charity flourish.
