I had an epiphany while listening to this episode.

There is no villain in Karl’s story. He hasn’t had to overcome any massive tragedy, or Phoenix rising from the ashes. In fact it’s an unremarkable success. But a great story nevertheless.

Karl’s story is about his progress from taking over the family business; creating a business that reflected his values and purpose; building a culture that allowed him to be in control and let go of managing; and finally having the time and money to pursue another passion.

The conversation with Karl reinforced what I have been espousing to anyone who will listen that it is possible to create a business that is independent of your daily involvement.

That way your business is more valuable and you get to do the things you love.

Intellectually you would know this. But it’s the emotional connection to your business that holds you back and the lack of a North Star to draw you towards a purpose.

There are some gems in Karl's story.

Francois Lupien is a dynamic coach, mentor and speaker whose experience includes successfully working with Tony Robbins, Stephen Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People) and as a consultant with Bob Proctor (Movie: The Secret 2006).

Achieving excellence in everything he puts his mind to, Francois has been a Tae Kwon Do Canadian champion, a Top Real Estate agent for 11 years with Remax, and a serial entrepreneur with multiple successful 6-figure businesses.

There were some fantastic lessons in the conversations and I think it’s one of those Episodes that you could save and listen to again and again, especially if you’re feeling a little low.

Francois reminded me again of the value of surrounding yourself with people who are moving forward rather than standing still or moving backwards. Francois mentioned Bob Proctor going into a bar and announcing he was never coming back.

I had a similar experience in PNG when I realised that the men sitting at the bar talking about the ‘good old day’s’ were just stuck and it wasn’t who I wanted to be associated with.

So the message is to surround yourself with good people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and approach life with a “How can I serve and add value first” attitude and in return you’ll be rewarded.

If you’re an individual looking for peak performance then please reach out to Francois. All his details are in the show notes below

Andrew Fox has a long list of academic achievements that he is proud of however he doesn’t display them on his wall. He says he feels that it is the person, not the credentials that are really at the core of cultural clarity.

There are so many beautiful nuggets of common sense on how to behave in a genuinely caring way. Respecting a person’s views and beliefs and taking the time to be interested in the person.

I hope you enjoy this insightful conversation with Andrew Fox.

As you can tell Damian has a very positive attitude towards business and life

There are a few lessons that I think we could take away from this conversation.

The first is that going back to basics is a mistake. What worked years ago may not work today. Although we didn’t discuss this a lot of what Damian spoke of was first principles.

You can be experienced and not confident, and not experienced and confident and it’s knowing the difference. There is obviously risks when acting with confidence and no experience, but if you don’t experiment you’ll never learn.

One area that Damian speak to a lot is profit. Clearly if a business is not making a profit, then it cannot survive. I’ve never met a successful business person who doesn’t understand their numbers.

Finally, Damian mentioned being an Employer of Choice, and this is something he and I believe is a necessary position to be in over the coming years to have a competative position in the market.

The final area, and it might be the most important one, is generosity. Damien has a very giving nature my interaction with him have always been positive he's always being generous with his time and thoughts and advice and he's helped a number of people who I've introduced him to in the philanthropic area so I have first hand knowledge of his generosity.

It’s interesting that regardless of the times and the business environment, regardless of the financial, political or societal position, people are a constant.

In today’s world we talk about Psychological Safety, in the 80’s and 90’s it was Emotional Intelligence and before that it was Management Theory.

So as business evolves so does the development of people and one could argue that the way we lead business is conforming with how we see society and that business is a large part of how we see society. It’s a chicken and egg conversation.

So it’s no surprise to me that the concept of an Employer of Choice is starting to become a term used for aspirational businesses. It’s becoming recognised as a way to be ahead of the pack, to gain an advantage over the competition by being unique.

I don’t believe it has yet caught on with the majority and there in lies the opportunity.

The majority of businesses are not yet prepared to take that massive leap forward, but for progressive and more nimble businesses, this is the opportunity to become a leader in their industry.

Every asset is eventually sold (or transferred in an Estate) and your business is typically a major part of your asset portfolio.

So it therefore makes sense to have a mindset to treat your business just like any other asset. What’s its purpose and why are you doing what you do?

That’s not an uncommon approach from Management Consultants but it’s a very different approach to what you’d expect to find from a Business Broker. But as you’ll hear, Simon Bedard’s financial management background makes perfect sense that he thinks this way.

Simon has over 20 years experience in the in the finance, energy and technology sectors and having worked as an investment banker in Institutional Banking and Global Markets, and holds an MBA through RMIT University,

The Exit Advisory Group helps business owners migrate their way through the question of “What’s my business worth when I eventually sell?”

That’s not an unusual question for a business broker to ask, but the unique position that Simon takes is that “If you have a Vision, we have a way to get you there”

After leaving School with multiple degrees and a Masters, Madelyn Dunlap soon realized, even with all that business knowledge, that she was ill-equipped to help the business develop.

This led her on a journey that coincided with her joining Matthew Pohl in his business. Matthew was on his own journey to grow his business and realized after trial and error and some 10 years of searching, discovered a book written by James Fischer titled Navigating your Growth that led them down a 3-year pathway of building a successful business and transitioning through a series of stages.

This then led to the establishment of The ReWild Group LLC Group in 2017 and as they say, the rest is history.

Madelyn talks about how the business owner has all the skills and energy to achieve their objectives, but they sometimes play whack-a-mole putting out fires.

The resources on The ReWild Group LLC platform are some of the best in the industry and a good portion of them are free.

You could stumble before you start on your business improvement strategy unless you take the time to be very clear on your strategy.

Mistakes at this early stage become a huge expense later on.

As the leader of your team, they are relying upon you to be very clear on the direction. The biggest mistake that business owners make is thinking they have to do this all on their own.

So the planning of resources is essential to the success of the project.

The things that need to be looked at are the internal, external, financial, and management resources available to be used.

And when and who to use is the critical step. Again, a common mistake is to try to make too many changes all at once. Unless the business is about to go under financially, you have time on your side.

Pick an important but not urgent priority and use this as the initial milestone target.

You’ll need to list all the other priorities, but in the beginning, focus on a laser-focused short-term outcome.

Follow the thinking process in this podcast and have the confidence to know your plan will succeed.

As we face yet another series of business challenges in the shape of inflation, interest rises, staff shortages and the potential for wage increases, it is more important than ever to have to be in control of your business.

At the core of this control is your financial viability and the tool that helps you with this analysis is your Financial Statement. Unfortunately it’s estimated that 75% of small and medium business owners have less than a basic understanding of their financial position. The remedy is for business owners to seek specialist advice from an accountant.

Typically when financial are mentioned people think of revenue and expenses. I’m going to cover two inputs into the revenue pot. These are Sales and Marketing

I discuss the importance of understanding your marketing objectives and how to measure the results. Marketing, done well, makes the sales process more predictable. Determining the Return On Investment on your Marketing spend needs constant monitoring and it’s the most difficult measurement to make because of the lag between input and output. Once again it’s knowing what questions to ask and using your Experiential Awareness when deciding what direction and investment to make.

Sales is somewhat easier in that it far simpler to measure. The difficulty is the interpretation of the results. Having a more consistent level of sales activity means that you will have more confidence in predicting the level of revenue.

Every decision on what to spend money on is based on the estimated return on the investment and the value that investment will bring. I look at the perception of value for money as a buyer and seller.

This episode meanders through the connections between marketing, sales and spending money and how these can be modelled to provide you with process to budget for the next few years.

Business Improvement is at the core of this process and it covers business management and communication training programs for employees.

There is a simple 30-day plan to improve your capacity using the Pareto 80/20 model and matching that with a 30-day plan to start the capability through the use of emotional intelligence.

In this episode of the Lazy Entrepreneur, we walk through a very different approach to managing people and reclaiming human resource management to its rightful place. The Manager of people.

HR Compliance, Workplace Gender Equality Agency, Occupational Health and Safety, Personnel Management, and other HR services all fit inside the HR Department.

The accountability for organising and managing people and their performance, in my opinion, needs to sit within the team and NOT HR.

Performance Management, the great resignation, or even the big resignation as it is now being called, has put an enormous amount of pressure on all types of businesses to recruit and retain employees.

So doing things the same as everyone else is just not going to cut it.

I'm introducing the concept of the Accountability and Behaviour Solution.
It's made up of 3 components.

  • Collective Accountability and Behaviour,
  • the Supervisor Support Solution, and
  • Individual Agreements.

We define the reason the business has succeeded that helps us to explain the Collective Accountability and Behaviour

We find agreement that supports behaviour that enables the continued success.

And the key one simple shift in the definition of a supervisor's KPI to a specific behaviour of mentorship and replacing themselves over time.

This approach feels counter intuitive, but in fact, it's how successful businesses have created psychological safety to become an employer of choice.

The challenge for business owners is dealing with the daily bombardment of information. Many business owners say they just don't have enough time.
I would say that if you had the right information, experience, and knowledge, it will significantly improve your efficiency, and therefore your time management.

In this episode of the Lazy Entrepreneur series, I introduce the concept of Experiential Awareness and combine this with the Eisenhower Model of Importance and Urgency. It is a simple 2 step layered approach that will give you the confidence to pull the trigger on how and when to implement your goals and objectives.

I also address the issue of risk assessment and resource allocation.

In Episode 2, I walk you through the process of taking the information in the Deep Dive Analysis and how to break down these into more bite-sized Goals and Objectives.

The biggest challenge I see with Business Owners is that they turn up on Monday morning ready to do stuff, but it's not always the right stuff.

This episode takes you through a process to gain clarity around your goals and what needs to happen to deliver a result.

We get clear about the goals and objectives
We use the S.M.A.R.T. model of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

I'm adding in 2 more letters to make it S.M.A.R.T.E.R. They are Energy to keep going, and Record/Review/Reflect

I've also suggested you find an Accountability Buddy to help you commit to the process.

next week we will be focusing on Priorities and making sure you are working on the right things at the right time.

I am so excited to be able to bring you the first of eight episodes of the Lazy Entrepreneur.

Every Monday, as usual, the Podcast will be available on all the usual platforms and there are also links available on our website.

Over the eight weeks, I'll be sharing not just the 'How to" in each step of a straightforward and practical application of the process and the use of the free documents, templates, and cheat sheets.

In this week's episode I'm taking you through the first steps of the Scale to Success Solution that I created to help my clients get their business ready for sale, so they don't have to sell. And that way they can retire into their business.

It's the foundation on which you use to do a Deep Dive Analysis of your business and get very clear on your objective and subjective views of your business.

If you follow the steps I walk you through and take the time to reflect on your business, I know you’ll receive an enormous amount of value.

There are lots of people who are in the Sales Coaching space and it’s a very competitive market. There’s a difference between being a good Sales Person and being a good Sales Coach or Manager. It’s rare you find someone who has transitioned successfully so I was I really pleased when Adam agreed to come on the show.

Adam Bude and I have known each other for about a year now and we’ve had numerous interactions where Adam has always been generous with his advice and counsel, especially in the area of Sales.

A real challenge for business owners, especially those who are starting out or looking to expand, is the tendency to take on anything and everything to bring in revenue.

I’m sure there are differing opinions on whether or not to take on all jobs for the revenue and work it out as you go, and I guess this approach would appeal to the quickstarts, or be very targeted and become the authority in a space, which is a harder and slower process.

I’m sure there are valid arguments made for both scenarios, but I would suggest the former is a result of weak financial management, poor planning, or circumstances beyond the individual's control rather than a strategic approach.

What I like and resonate with is Adam’s view and focus on the client, not just from the client’s interests but also on making sure what you offer solves the client’s problem. And if you don’t have the solution you refer it to someone who can deliver exactly what the client wants.

I often get asked by Solo Entrepreneurs to help them set up or grow their business. I say no, because I know I’m not the best person to do that. I can Mentor them on some aspects of the business but I’ve chosen not to have a product suite for that market.

I’ve given away thousands of dollars of revenue to other service providers who I know have the exact solution the client needs now.

The world of employment just keeps getting more technical and complex, especially as we migrate into a post-Covid world. There are emerging issues that will be impacted by rising salaries, interest rate pressure and what’s known as the great resignation.

So to keep in front of the curve and the competition, a business owner needs to make sure there is the appropriate level of documentation in place.

Employsure are one service provider that helps to fill this technical gap and Ron Mazumder provided great information on what steps to take in the Workplace Occupational Health and Safety area.

My guest today is Sharon Knighton who is based in Brisbane, Australia. Sharon is the Founder and Managing Director of PeopleMode who partner with CEO’s Boards and heads of Human Resource divisions and Sharon supports organisations with Transition, Talent and Leadership with a specific focus on neuroscience and psychological safety in the workplace.

In this week's episode we cover a wide range of topics all circling around creating an employer of choice culture through the understanding of Neuroscience and how the brain impacts how we behave.

As a business leader there is responsibility to create an environment where the staff feel psychologically safe and able to speak up without fear or ridicule.

The impact of not having this in place is to eventually lose staff that has a significant impact on the bottom line.

Kylie Spyrides is building a growing photography business in Perth and also giving back through the Decide your Destiny Movement.

We discussed many different subjects from growing up in Sydney with his Grandparents and the impact that has had on his life and life choices; how a comment from Kyle’s Grandfather when Kyle was an 18 year old inspired the title for his book.

The one theme that ran through this whole conversation that I think you’ll resonate with is that there are moments in ones life where we can just ‘move on’ or we take the time to reflect and find meaning in what we do.

In last week’s episode with Aveline Clarke, purpose was the basis on which Aveline has built and building a life’s work, as is purpose at the core of Kyle’s life and vision as he makes an impact on those around him.

Kyl’e’s story had so many little nuggets about resilience, but I think the one thing that stood out like a country mile was the respect and gratitude Kyle has for the gifts that are handed to him.

How many business owners started a business because of a purpose?

I know I didn’t and I would suggest not many have it as a central part of their offering.

It’s a bit like Mazlow’s hierarchy of needs. Money is important but it’s impossible to be a sustainable driver. Over time it’s replaced with something else. It could be Ego and Power, or it could be Influence and Impact.

Being clear on your business purpose provides you with clarity about who you serve. This means that your messaging becomes aligned with your ideal clients. The result, is you don’t have to sell.

Aveline Clarke, the CEO of Journey Point, walks us through why and how purpose makes a huge success in attracting the right type of client.

Business owners seek advice from experts because they have a specific problem. But sometimes the problem may not be the key issue for the business and the owner is looking for advice. Many times the business owner doesn’t know what question to ask and if the adviser has one tool in their tool bag then the owners is getting one solution.

There are obvious differences between a specialist and a generalist, and the Medical and Law professions don’t seem to have a problem in bringing in a specialist Surgeon or Barrister. But in the world of business it seems advisers want to be both.

“You need a (fill in the blank) and I just happen to have the best blank solution.”

Both Sam and I feel that there is a better way and it starts with listening and asking questions. Being curious about all aspects of the business and that may also include how the owner is ‘feeling’.

I’m often surprised how feelings are brushed over because these are the owner’s emotions and are often the best signal to where the problem actually sits.

Sam guides expert advisers and helps them to offer a more fulfilling service to them and their clients and this sits alongside my Scale to Success Strategy as it fits into the application of process, people and performance.

As a business owner, have you found yourself lying in bed, staring at the ceiling unable to sleep? Your mind is racing with the things you have to do, anxiety rising because it's not being done right, you reach for your phone start scrolling, another hour of sleep lost. If this describes you, then this episode of the Inspiring Business Podcast is for you.

Two reasons. The first Is Jane Tarrant is a specialist in helping with practical breathing techniques to become more aware of your rising anxiety. Jane uses the analogy of the staircase and by the time you’re at the top your screaming. Her techniques catch your awareness at the bottom stairs so you can stop climbing.

I do something similar, but with your business processes and people so you have confidence that you can be in control without having to be controlling.

Mangala Martinus provides an insight into what it takes to build a successful business over time.

Mangala took his experience as an employee and applied it to his goal of being a Consultant, and has built a business that is based on collaboration amongst a group of peers to provide a specific solution to a specific problem within a specific niche.

There were many moments of wisdom woven into the conversation and these are these are just a few.

Being a contrarian is not an easy road to travel In the book of that name M. Scot Peck wrote "Move out or grow in any dimension and pain as well as joy will be your reward. A full life will be full of pain."

The choice not to follow the crowd down the traditional LinkedIn pathway was “painful” in the beginning, but now the rewards are coming to fruition.

Ego is not a dirty word if it helps to convey your confidence at delivery, and being aware of one’s ego as a positive influence versus it being one of hubris.

The one that stood out for me as I resonated this in my own business was Mangala’s reflection on not finding a Mentor earlier to guide him through his journey.

And I know for me when I started Inspiring Business I searched for that guide as well and as my business grows I also seek out Mentors who have experienced what I’m about to experience. The knowledge of the guide is priceless.

The Scale to Success Strategy can be your guide to your success.

Considering whether to include Environment, Social and Governance in your Brand awareness strategy may not be obvious, but Owen Hughes gives you some compelling arguments why you should start to consider it.

It definitely ruffled Elon Musk’s feathers. Owen and I recorded this conversation in May 2022 and about the same time there was controversy over the dropping of Tesla from the S & P 500 ESG Index and this got under the skin of Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO. Leaving aside the details of whether Tesla’s inclusion or exclusion are valid and warranted, it’s obvious that ESG is important when it comes to Brand support.

Owen is an experienced marketer and pointed ou that brands who do not include ESG in their marketing strategy will eventually be left behind in the race for consumer support.

I would add that employers in general, not just the larger brands, need to consider ESG from the perspective of the choices employees will make when deciding which employers matches their values. We saw when companies adopted the ‘new safety regime’ of the 80’s and 90’s they were rewarded with contracts because of their values towards safety.

More recently Psychological Safety has become an important focus for all levels of business.

I don’t see this happening in the short term, but as ESG becomes a more accepted and possibly even driven by compliance, it will need to become a consideration, so you may as well get ahead of the curve.

I’d place this in two camps, the first being risk management and the second being corporate culture. The obvious one is marketing but I feel you need to get the context right before you launch into execution.

The thing about running a business, especially ones without a senior management team, is you’re typically making decisions in isolation and these are based on your knowledge and experience to date.

Simone’s strategy has been to develop relationships with people who have the same values, similar drive and positivity and perhaps have experienced the problem you're facing and so can provide a form of mentorship and guidance. That’s an unpaid relationship and as Simone said it needs to be a two way conversation.

The other way to get help is to ask a business adviser who can spend more time understanding your problem and offer similar mentorship or guidance, or potentially a consultancy approach. It just depends on the problem. And as a paid adviser they join your management team on a fractional basis.

If I have a criticism of the Coaching or Consulting community is there is a tendency to be all things to all people. For example I don’t work with Solo business owners because I have nothing to offer them. Why? Because I’m actually working my way through that maize myself.

However, for a business that is established and needs a more robust management structure because the owner wants to transition from being a doer to being the strategic leader, that’s exactly the experiences I’ve personally had. So I’m able to be the guide through that process.

So I understand the frustrations of being at work far more than feels necessary and missing out on being or doing the things you love. And I know how to help you get out of that maize.

I’d love to hear about your goals and why you want to achieve them and together we can develop a roadmap for you to get what you want for you and your family.

Human design is a truly fascinating subject and I think one that if ignored will be at your peril.

As I mentioned during the chat with Lynda, it feels like the early days of Emotional Intelligence or even the personality profiling or communication systems. But like Lynda I’m not an expert in these areas and although I’ve found them to be useful to a degree, even though their supporters would say that these systems have bias removal added in because by definition the output is impacted by the input.

I’m keen to see how this fits in with what I’m seeing as a movement towards decentralization across the political, financial and people ecosystems.

I hope this interview has peaked enough interest for you to at least look a little deeper and reach out to Lynda

I’m sure you have a sense of what you love doing, so having a tool in your kit bag to guide you down this track would be invaluable.

The story behind the story and something that resonated for me was that over Gavin’s career there was a common theme of continually looking for a purpose and a way to then have a positive impact on the environment around him.

That’s certainly something that has driven me for the past 30 years.

Many business owners start with the purpose of creating a life that is better than the one they had.

When success comes it’s extremely satisfying because it’s a validation of the hard work, focus and determination, to succeed. The baseline measurement of success in the early days of a business has to be linked to the financials as Gavin mentioned.

But for some once financial security has been achieved the measurement of success takes on a different meaning. I hear it expressed “I’ve got everything I’ve wanted and I’m still not happy. Why?”

I understand for some this sounds crazy as they are driven by that measure of success and it’s how they measure their value. It’s not until their is a jolt to this existence that they feel the need to make a change. It’s typically a health scare, theirs or a loved one, a relationship breaking down, or just a burn out.

At this point you’re playing catch-up or you’re backed into a corner.

There are great and simple tips in this episode on how to be aware of your emotions and being intentional with your actions.

Colin Lee from Inspire Realty is attempting to be a catalyst for structural change in the property advising industry through his bespoke approach to creating individual investment portfolios.

Colin’s management approach as he scales his business has been formed from years of experience and as he says ‘I’m still figuring this out”. As we all are. I thought it was clever and astute how Colin connected his role as visionary to purpose and making sure his team understand the impact their roles have on the client outcome.

It requires building trust and an open and honest environment to allow the business to flourish.

It’s interesting that the last two conversations I’ve had the business was started as a result of an unexpected event impacting on the individual. In Colin’s case it was a redundancy and in Chris Olufeso’s in Episode 46 it was a choice to leave a toxic environment, but both Chris and Colin had the idea, I’ll say, in reserve, and the event was the catalyst or enabler for them to make the change, and potentially if that situation hadn’t presented itself, the businesses would not have been created and therefore their value possibly would not have been uncovered and they would not now be making their impact on the world.

I see this happening with business owners where it’s not a redundancy but an event that causes them to think differently about their business. And sometimes it’s too late to recover from. And like Chris and Colin they never thought it would happen to them.

I’m sure many of you can relate to Chris’ situation in which you started your business. It doesn’t always come from being disillusioned but it often comes from a desire to do things better that serves your passion and purpose. You may not express it exactly that way but I’ve never met a business owner who didn’t think they could do it better.

Chris’ DNA is to solve problems with simplicity and he now has that opportunity with the Upzeez baby cot and I wish him well with this important product innovation.

It was interesting that Chris spoke to the point about getting advice and making sure he had people smarter than him in the room in specialist areas. And that is the one thing that I feel prevents business owners from really scaling their business.

Admitting that you don’t know everything is the first step to extracting yourself from the day to day operations.

If you’re frustrated with having your business controlling you or not sure what your next performance improvement step should be, contact me through the link below or call me on 0421 99 88 22 and ‘ll be very happy to have a chat about how I can help.

I’ve had multiple conversations with Angela and Cristina and every time I get a sense of their enjoyment at what they do and the impact they want to have not just with their clients but with their individual passion.

During the interview I had to stop several times because I had so much information to process and I wanted to make sure we were able to drill deep into a few key areas.

You’ve heard how they both respect each other based on a friendship that’s been build on honesty and how open and honest communication keeps strengthening their bond.

How passion and fun can combine with commerce and profit to empower their and their client’s business.

And a mindset that is one of being in business as a long-game strategy

Another wonderful conversation with so many thoughtful insights into how to become a better business owner, leader and human being.

There were too many nuggets of gold to list them all here, but the two that stood out for me were the principle to hire quality staff, elevate them and celebrate their success and the second was the lesson that letting go and being less controlling actually enables you to be focussed on the high value activities that your passionate about and generates value.

These are valuable tips to be reminded of as we navigate our way through the new normal post-Covid environment.

In 2020 we were forced to rethink our business strategies and in a weird way it reinvigorated some parts of the economy, and unfortunately decimating others. As we come out of Covid and into the new normal, I’m sensing a different level of pressure will now be placed on business owners.

We are dealing with geo-political uncertainty, interest rate pressures, supply chain disruptions, wages pressure, interest rate pressure, staffing pressure, and a doubling down by everyone on digital marketing to get on top of the competition.

So I don’t see any let up for you, the business owner, any time soon so I see another cycle where there will be opportunities as well as threats. As always, it will be the businesses that are ready with capacity and capability and flexible enough to take advantage of the situation. The alternative is you’ll be run over by your competition.

I’ve partnered with MyMalekso using their Business Accelerator and Business Sale Maxiser Reports to support the work that I do using the Scale to Success System. I have been looking for some time to find a tool that is flexible enough to fit in with how I run my bespoke programs and MyMalekso certainly fits the bill.

If you’re frustrated with having your business controlling you or not sure what your next performance improvement step should be, contact me through the link below.

I offer an Exploration call so we can talk about what might be a better alternative.

I’m offering a massive introductory price reduction of 50% off the MyMalekso Business Accelorator and Business Sale Maximiser if you order before June 30.

Both are valued at $1980 so your investment is only $990.

Will Samson is, in my opinion one of those individuals who is paving the way with innovative concepts on how to reclaim the lost art of human interdependence.

The concepts that have been generated by the ‘self help’ industry that you can do this on your own with the 6 simple steps is obviously not working and a new narrative is emerging.

I think we see this in the information that is emerging about the effects of social media on our mental state, the polarisation of ideas because we have been encouraged to communicate digitally.

During the conversation Will mentioned that having a meal, the art of discussion whilst breaking bread and how that simple act has a powerful impact on the relationship.

I’m keen to see if we can get the Sunday Family dinner back on the table. Excuse the pun.

After 18 years of marriage my wife Debbie and I divorced.

Like most divorces it was difficult and uncomfortable but the outcome was a beautiful relationship where we knew we still loved each other, but we were not IN Love.

Once the decision was made the advice was to make every decision with the children in mind.

The fact that over the 18 years we had created wonderful relationships with friends and these then supported us particularly in the early stages. It takes a Village to raise a child.

Change is often perceived as bad but doesn’t always have to be that. It’s how you handle it that matters.

And finally, being vulnerable is a strength.

There were so many lessons that I learnt throughout this period and the years after our divorce that I have been able to apply to my business and management style.

In this week's Episode I share some of the key elements that I think a Business Owner needs to consider as they create a life for themselves.

  1. Being a good Technician doesn't make you a good business person
  2. Know you don't know everything
  3. Really take time to create a strategy that fits into your purpose
  4. Get good at delegating
  5. Accept that you and your team will make mistakes
  6. The last point is to be kind to yourself

Having spent years as a Financial Planner and working with individuals to create wealth, Ivan came to the realisation that money does not make you happy, it provides you with options.

He realised that the conversations he was having with his clients were more about the emotional outcomes and goals than the money.

He now focuses on helping Executives to find the time to enjoy themselves on the Golf course. One of the tools Ivan uses is a reflection and review at the beginning and end of each day to make sure the main things have been of focus.

One exciting development that Ivan is creating is the executive Golf network. If you’re a manager, executive or business owners and a keen golfer then this is definitely something you should investigate.

I don’t know what I don’t know is a frequently used term especially when starting something new.

As you have more experiences sometimes they don’t work out and now there’s pain or doubt associated with that decision.

I don’t think your age helps or hinders, I believe it’s a function of the experience.

Now knowing what you know and not having had a great experience makes you cautious. That could help with avoiding pain, but it can also be paralysing.

My favourite saying is mistakes are only decisions that were made with not enough information. More information, different decision.

Knowing when or if to pull the trigger on a decision is having enough information to be uncomfortably comfortable.

I created the Scale to Success System to do that very thing. To have enough information and data for you as the business owner to have confidence to make those important decisions.

I offer an Exploration call so we can talk about your plans to scale your business, whatever that means to you. It could be you want to grow, but it also might be getting more time to work on your business or maybe having time to spend outside the business, It might be working on your profit, people or a combination of all of these.

Sandra D’Soza is the Founder and CEO of Ellect whose focus is helping businesses to achieve their Environmental Social and Governance Goals in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Ellect offers two products being the Ellect Stars in Gender Equality and the Supplier Diversity Marketplace.

Sandra and I spoke after the interview about our conversation and there were not many references to ‘how to’ and it was more about the purpose and feelings towards the subject. It was more serious than both of us expected but right now it probably needs to be taken seriously.

Maybe in another 5 years the conversation around supply diversity will be one questioning why you don’t have it, and you’re missing out on opportunities

The work that Sandra does is incredibly important and I’m buoyed that the senior executives see this area as a focus for the years to come.

I know that as I grew up I was fortunate to be surrounded by multi-culturalism and the 10 years in worked in Papua New Guinea taught me many skills that I would not have gained here in Australia and have been incredibly valuable as I help business owners scale their business.

It’s shaped how I see things. I think it gave me the opportunity to see things through a different lens.

The opportunity here is for small businesses is to create value for their business through a diverse workforce and as a result will be of value to larger organisations who are also walking down this path.

Sandra’s details in the show notes and I’d encourage you to investigate her web site.

Brett Martin is the President of Zenatta Consulting.

In this episode Brett gives us some nuggets of gold amongst his engaging stories and passion for business and life.

This is definitely one of those conversations where the more you listen to it, the more you can appreciate that it's the small but intentional decisions that you make in life that is your value and values.

Some of the big ones for me were,

  • That you never know where a relationship might lead. It’s not always obvious so it’s your intent that boomerangs back to you.
  • Hire people who are smarter than you and who fit in to your values.

Brett mentioned Patrick Lencioni's book 'The Ideal Team Player"
I can also recommend - The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable.

  • Plan and be ready to pull the trigger
  • It takes time, commitment and consistency for the plans to succeed
  • Be prepared to remeasure and maybe reset your plans
  • And finally love what you do.

In this Episode I drill down into how ed Johnson, the founder and Director of Exdia Bookkeeping Services has over a relatively short period of time has carved out a reputation for providing quality services to Faith based entities and Small Business.

Once of the keys to Ed's approach is being comfortable with not being the centre of the business, and being really clear, and humble, about what he's good at and what others can contribute and who may be able to the job better.

This has allowed Ed to experiment with 'going off the grid' for a day to see how the team responds to the challenge of 'being the Boss'.

It's a great example of creating a culture where trust is the key and building the business from within.

I this Episode you'll hear from two leading business owners in the Australia construction industry, Theo Vairaktaris MD of the Usher Group and Simon Boyes MD of Benchmark Scaffolding.

Their view is that Post COVID will bring with it a different set of challenges with the practical issues of finding good quality people to manage the volume of work that will come.

Both Theo and Simon have been careful to maintain their existing workforce and ride out the storm because they understand the cost of finding, training and engaging new employees, plus the loyalty that is gained by being loyal to the staff.

The return on investment Post COVID based on the decisions that have been made during COVID are still coming and the employers who have been loyal to their staff will be the ones who attract the best.

This is a special podcast with Melissa Donnelly, Hasan Sharif and Graeme Barkus.
They have all appeared in previous Podcasts and were insightful in their own right but having them in the same space really accelerated the conversation that allowed a deep analysis of where we have been over the past 2 years and what the future holds for us.

The one thing that was unanimous amongst us all was that the Pandemic has brought about a shift in thinking regarding Mental Wellness and the need for employers to provide flexibility to their workforce.

It is a truly engaging and captivating listen.

In this Episode Tony Hillary sold his UK based business after 30 years and when Tony said “That by the time I sold the business I wasn’t needed”.

And isn’t that how it should be?

There were a few things that struck me about this conversation with Tony Hillary.

First was Tony’s approach to solving problems. Not overthinking things and using his common sense. We could all do with a dose of that.

I know some people may say times have changed over the past 40 years, and that’s true, but I don’t think the fundamentals of business have.

Find great people, have a quality product or service, and value your customers.

That seems too obvious but to quote Tony, “Don’t overthink it”.

It do believe there is a common theme with success business owners and that’s the application of Leadership and Tony’s was based on a genuine desire, and dare I say humility, to find people better than him, make sure he trusted them, and then let them do their job.

So business needs good people and a sound business model, and then just do it.

Great advice from one who spent 30 years building a business that Scaled to Success.

If you haven't had any exposure to the concept of reading faces it’s a little different to other, let’s say the more frequently or traditional profiling methods. I’d say the value of this method is you are able to do homework on an individual and find out the most appropriate way to communicate so that the exchange is valuable for you both.

By using Alan’s Human Pattern Recognition program you’ll be able to improve the way in which you communicate with your clients, your staff and other relationships that are important to you.

I also want to acknowledge Alan and the work he is doing in the Camp Fire Project. Alan’s shown throughout his life that he’s a leader whose purpose is to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

Gary Weis has had a diverse background that has taken him from the music industry in the 80’s to running a hotel and restaurant where putting ‘bums on seats’ was the name of the game. Fast forward to the digital age and Gary applies the same principles to driving quality leads to your sales funnel.

As Gary says, a business can not survive without sales and marketing is the precursor to that.

The challenge for people who have dabbled in marketing and not having a great experience is like saying that using timber is no good for building a house.

Unless you’re qualified to build a house, you’ll no doubt have a different result doing it yourself to that of a qualified builder with the right tools.

Gary mentioned that every business needs a slightly different approach depending upon their stage, size and requirements and find out what you don’t know.

Gary has offered a complimentary call if you’d like to investigate your marketing strategies.

Alexandra Andre who is based in Melbourne. Alexandra is an accomplished Marketing professional with over 20 years experience in Australia and in the UK and founded her own business in 2015.

Alexandra ran her first Marathon in 2008 and then in 2015 competed in the gruelling Ironman race in Melbourne and dedicated that to her good friend, Mads.

Alexandra says “I've developed such a passion for sharing what I've learnt on my journey, in the hope it might help someone else on theirs.” and that is definitely within the context in which this Podcast sits.

Alexandra is also an accomplished author with her first book “the Power of Possibility” and it’s off the back of this that Alexandra works as a speaker on possibilities and inspiration and has recently launched the Power of Possibility Academy

I’m sure Alexandra would say her greatest achievement is being the Mother of her Son James.

The 6 Tips that Alexandra has suggested is a good first step when looking at achieving your Goal is

  1. Break it down into smaller bite sized goals
  2. Give it Purpose (our why)
  3. Go Holistic - Mental, Physical, Spiritual, Emotional
  4. Make it a journey. Play with it, experiment
  5. Run your own race
  6. Leverage the learning. There are lessons, especially from setbacks

Karen Lindsay is a Partner in the award winning Brisbane based accounting firm Aegis Business Services.

The name Aegis comes from Greek mythology. The Aegis was the shield or breastplate of Athena and Zeus, famously bearing Medusa’s head. The modern concept of Aegis is a knowledgeable, supportive, guiding and protective source.

This is what Aegis Business Services strives to be, a source of knowledge and support for your business so that you have more time to spend on the real business of your business.

Karen also uses her industry knowledge and experience to help woman who have been able to extract themselves from domestic violence and are needing help in how to bounce back financially in the Financial Super Woman workshops.

One of the key takeaways for me in the interview how the business has built a culture that enables honest communication and that allowed Karen to ask the question of Tori to consider an alternative to her current situation.

The other piece is that sometimes it takes a little push for the Owner to acknowledge that they can’t do this all on their own.

There is so much value in Amber’s story. How growing up in PNG has given her cultural awareness and acceptance of diversity. Not surprisingly Amber values relationships and was drawn to Human Resources as a career. This has morphed into a career as a Lecturer and eventually running her international online business.

In all of this Amber and her husband Bundy are raising their 8 year old daughter.

Amber’s passion for helping comes through in our discussion.

The lesson which comes through as an underlying ingredient was a consideration of the situation and the people around Amber and valuing both herself and ‘filling her cup’ as well as the consideration of those around her.

There is so much value in this episode it’s one of those that makes you think

Lior Izik is the owner of Canadian based Amazing Business Results and the author of Entrepreneurial Evolution, Bottom Line Lessons To Bring Your Business to the New Age.
Lior has a unique way of looking at not just systemisation but also on life.
You'll hear how he started off as a young entrepreneur and took those early successes and failures to build not just a business but more importantly a lifestyle for himself.

Lior believes that Business Owners should be lazy. Not in the "I'm not doing anything" sense, but the "I'm not doing anything that I'm not a genius at doing".

It sounds counter-intuitive but when you hear Lior's story and the work he has done and continues to do with automating business you can see why he has the successes he has.

This interview with the Managing Director of the Usher Group Theo Vairaktaris.

In this interview Theo shares how as a young boy he had a purpose and passion to help out his Mother and although he didn’t know that as being an Entrepreneur it was the foundation for building the business he has today.

Patience and going back to basics is currently at the core of Theo’s day.

He’s intentionally slowed down his pace and spending more quality time going deeper in the activities. This is in contrast to him skimming across each topic and moving onto the next that didn’t allow him to be fully present to the problem and therefore the solution.

Achieving more by doing less.

Underpinning the business are core values and agree behaviours, with 12 Pillars, one for each month. October being random acts of kindness.

People are attracted to the Usher Group because one of the key KPI’s is “Love what you do”

Theo spends time explaining how they go about selecting and then nurturing their staff.

“Passion with the right action always equals results”

The other key point to the growth and success of the Usher Group has been Theo recognising that asking for help and delegating to the right people has accelerated the success of the business.

Creating a culture of trust amongst the team and allowing the staff involved and contributing to the culture of the business.

The Usher Group has outsourced its HR processes that allows a separation between the process and the people, but the ‘performance management’ of the team sits with the daily discussions amongst the teams and any issues are resolved before it gets to a formal HR process.

On a personal level Theo is curious about the inner workings of the mind and how the study of the mind is evolving and how we create our own reality

Tim Hyde the Founder of Win More Clients. Tim is a growth business strategist an Infusionsoft certified partner and a leading authority in sales and marketing automation for business. He helps business owners help get back time through business automation and training and develops a marketing machine approach.

Tim speaks about how his early childhood days and attitudes about wealth and success can be fun.

He debunks the theory that work has to be hard.

As an innovator in the early stages of the digital age, Tim saw how clients did not understand the relationship between the customer experience they were looking to provide and the delivery of the marketing information.

Many clients saw the campaign as not working when in fact it was just a small part of the whole strategy.

Tim has built a successful international marketing advising business to help the owner to understand the real customer experience and journey.

We go deep into the opportunity cost of time and the importance of cash flow and how business owners are challenged to value their time.

We drill down into the business case for business automation and when to include this is needed to manage and set client expectations.

Simon Boyes is the Managing Director of Benchmark Scaffolding, a Brisbane based specialist scaffolding business.
Simon explains how his natural drive to work hard and stay focused has created a business that does not rely on him and the success of the business has come about because of the quality and expertise of the people around him.

In the business of scaffolding the wrong attitude is a Life or Death outcome and their business Mantra is Safety first - Second Nature.

Simon talks about his challenge to let go of control. Once he recognised that it was he who was stopping the business from growing and he allowed the people around him to become invested in the outcome, they all stepped up freeing Simon to focus on the strategy and his passion of building relationships with clients and suppliers.

Being very clear on hiring people with the right attitude was a key part of the success. Simon explains how he would recruit staff with no scaffolding experience and train them in the Benchmark Scaffolding way - Safety First - Second Nature.

You can find more information on Benchmark Scaffolding at
