Peter actually walked on water with Jesus — before sinking. But what if we paused right there and celebrated the miracle moment instead of bracing for the fall?

In this Walk On Water series episode, Bethany Joy shares how to freeze time in your own life through the practice of interactive appreciation — a simple, powerful way to spot God’s fingerprints in your everyday moments, even in the middle of life’s storms.

Whether it’s walking on water or walking the dog, you’ll learn how to notice God’s presence, celebrate His invitations, and help others do the same.

In Matthew 14:22-33, Peter does something wild — he steps out of the boat and onto the water toward Jesus. But before that step, there’s a decision, a moment where both feet aren’t on solid ground.

This episode explores:

  • Why the first step is always the scariest
  • How to lead without rescuing
  • Why letting others “struggle” can actually be an act of love
  • And how to recognize when you are in a Peter moment

We’ll talk about the butterfly struggle analogy, slowing down in the storm, and learning to trust Jesus’ presence even when the situation makes no sense.

It wasn’t just about walking on water — it was about being with his Teacher.

This week in our Walk On Water series, we explore one of the most overlooked parts of Matthew 14: Jesus spoke first.
In the middle of the storm, before the miracle, there was a moment of listening.

In relationships—whether with God, family, friends, or those you lead—active listening changes everything. We’ll talk about how to know you’re really listening, ways to reflect back what you’ve heard, and how curiosity keeps you connected to someone else’s story.

Listening well takes courage, intention, and practice. But it’s worth it.

When Jesus sent the disciples into the storm, He knew it was coming. What does that mean for us as leaders, parents, and friends when those we love are walking through hard seasons? In this Walk On Water series episode, Bethany Joy shares how to resist the urge to “fix” and instead truly be present in the storm with others.

💡 Learn how to walk with—not ahead of—those in pain, stay grounded when emotions run high, and create space for God to move.

We’re continuing the Walk On Water series by sitting with one powerful truth: Jesus sent the disciples into the storm, fully knowing it was coming.

Sometimes loving well means we walk with people through their storm instead of rushing them to the other side. This episode challenges you to slow down, resist quick fixes, and offer presence instead of platitudes.

  • [0:00] Welcome + Recap of Episode #1: Letting go and trusting
  • [1:00] A personal tattoo story and why Matthew 14 matters to me
  • [4:04] Jesus knew the storm was coming… and sent them anyway
  • [5:50] Why we’re tempted to fix instead of be present
  • [7:27] Learning to self-regulate and sit with others in their storms
  • [8:29] Who in your life needs you to walk with them right now?
  • [9:40] Two reflection questions for the week
  • [10:43] Final encouragement to step out and thrive

3 Takeaways: 1. Presence over fixing – Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is simply be with someone in their storm. 2. Self-awareness matters – Before jumping in to “help,” check your own emotions and intentions. 3. God is still in control – Even in chaos, trust that God knows and is working in the situation.

"Sales can feel good." I'll never forget the moment I heard Justin say those words to our group...and he meant every single word! I've seen and experienced the transformation rethinking the sales conversation has done for me and my groups. Join me as I dive deeper with Justin today!Justin has had a love for sales since he was 18. He’s been in direct sales (selling Cutco kitchen knives), B2B sales, financial planning, and finally high-ticket coaching sales. Over thousands of sales calls and millions of dollars in deals closed, he realized that sales, when done right, can be fun, loving, impactful, and a win-win for both sides, whether the prospect buys or not. If you have been following my podcast for any length of time, you know I try to be as authentic and transparent as possible. In this summer series as I'm sharing tools, I wanted to share some of my personal examples. So today, I share a journal entry I wrote a while ago using the Emmanuel Journaling technique. Now it's your turn!

In this episode, we redefine freedom. Many times we define real freedom as the absence of a bad, destructive, or defective behavior or thought. What is freedom was actually not about getting rid of anything at all? What if it was actually about the continual presence of God? Let's talk!

So, how do we avoid ending with a bang and ending well? Let's talk!

So, you are at the end. Now what? How do you move forward? I share a few tips for one-on-one relationships as well as groups. Let's start ending well!

It's really what started me down this path of awareness that I personally do not walk through departure well and what elements are needed to really walk through the farewell in a group setting. Every story has a beginning. I got asked earlier this week, "Bethany, how in the world did you start working with mental health professionals?" As we ventured further into the discussion, we both realized this may help others who are trying to discern their "why" or find words around what they do. Plus, it helps you connect with Step Out & Thrive in even deeper ways! So...here's my story...

Walking on water was the highlight of Matthew 14:22-33 but many times this great walk is overlooked by the rest of the story. We take a minute to freeze time here and talk more about how to walk in courage even during times when we feel like everything is going great. Instead of just riding the wave, here are a few practical tips to remember to focus on in the Light so you can remember it deeply in the dark.

My most requested tool when I work one-on-one with clients and in group sessions is interactive appreciation. However, this tool is only effective at the level it is experienced. One of my many physical challenges since birth has been my battle with severe hearing loss. I have a hole in my right eardrum and a microscopic canal in my left ear. I've been wearing hearing-aids since kindergarten and I've learned so many tricks to get through life with these amplified bombshells. I loved the ability to click the sound of my life on and off with just the flick of a button. But little did I know I was fighting the wrong war. In this video, you will get a glimpse into my high school years and how God taught me to walk through the real battle raging in my mind.
