There has been much talk about end times as we've gone through this pandemic. Things like a one-world government, the mark of the beast, and the anti-Christ have been on people's minds these past couple of years. Here we tease apart some of the issues and talk about how our doctrine might affect our outlook on the world.

We quoted a Wikipedia article about dates people have set for the end of the world. You can read it here.

I also quoted from the Rapture article from the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology:

“The pretribulation rapture is one of the major doctrines of dispensationalists, and lead them to adopt a miraculous view of social ethics as well as a negative attitude toward society. Those who hold this view have a narrow outlook toward the church and its mission, culture and education, and current events. Their version of Christ against culture has imparted to twentieth-century evangelicals a spirit of withdrawal and of suspicion toward others.” (R.G. Clouse, Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, p. 910)

We are so excited to have Dr. David Koyzis, author of Political Visions and Illusions, with us on the podcast today!

We did a book report on the Political Visions book in the past several episodes and invited Dr. Koyzis to bring the conclusion to the book. I think you will enjoy his perspective on how the ideologies in the book mimic the true gospel. He gives good advice to the church about how to think about our relationship with political entities.

Dr. David Koyzis is an experienced theologian who taught for 30 years at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario, and is currently a Global Scholar with Global Scholars Canada. He has attained a Ph.D. in Government and International Studies at the University of Notre Dame, a Master’s in Political Theory at Toronto’s Institute for Christian Studies, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Koyzis has authored We Answer to Another: Authority, Office, and the Image of God and Political Visions and Illusions: A Survey and Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies.

Dr. Koyzis blogs at http://byzantinecalvinist.blogspot.com.

He records music (!) at https://genevanpsalter.blogspot.com

Socialism is the ideology that elevates communal ownership over individual ownership. It can be defined by its desire for economic equality. Liberals take exception to socialism because it seems to de-emphasize individual responsibility. The irony of socialism is that if property is owned by a large number of people, then a few must be designated to care for, or govern it, and they then become privileged and the ideal of socialism becomes self-defeating. Marxism is a subset or expression of socialism that favors a revolution of the working class as the redemptive part of their narrative.

This and recent episodes have been heavily dependant upon this book, Political Visions and Illusions by David Koyzis. Come back next week. We will interview Dr. Koyzis!

Democratism is the ideology that values above all else the rule of the people. Democratism is rarely, okay is never, as simple and pure as it sounds. As with each of these ideologies, in the proper place, Democracy is a great tool. Democratism crosses a line and becomes a creed, something to be believed and embraced. And, as with each of these, we must identify and decide what is good and how do we have the right ideas in proper perspective and place.

Here are our seven reasons we think the worship gathering of the church is not the place for flying national flags:

  1. God gives the church a national identity of its own. (1 Peter 2:9) If the church does not have a national identity then the identity is that of aliens and strangers in this world (1 Peter 2:11; Hebrews 11:13)

  2. We identify first with the worldwide church. The church has more in common with Christians living in other nations than it does with those who do not acknowledge Jesus as their king in our own nation.

  3. The flag divides and distances us from brothers and sisters who have different national origins.

  4. The flag can be a sign of syncretism, adding false beliefs and hopes to the Christian hope.

  5. Flying a flag makes the American cause look like God’s cause and suggests that America is God’s special country.

  6. It confuses those who are making their way into the church — do they have to agree with us about politics in order to be welcome here?

  7. The flag in a worship gathering is a relatively new phenomenon in Church history.

In his book God of Liberty, Thomas Kidd offers 5 religious ideas that shaped the American Revolution. We finish our discussion of these five ideas. They are:

  1. The Disestablishment of Churches

  2. The Creator God Guarantees Human Rights

  3. Humans are sinful therefore centralized government is dangerous.

  4. The republic must be sustained by virtue.

  5. God works in and through nations.

Here is a link to the full farewell speech by Ronald Reagan.

Here is a link to the sermon from John Winthrop.

We make five suggestions about how the Sermon on the Mount shapes the political involvement of the church:

  1. “Salt and Light” speak to the public effect of being kingdom people. Salt and Light are effects derived from having the character described in the beatitudes.

  2. God’s people are only salt and light when their actions in the world are governed by the beatitudes.

  3. Morality is not the goal of the beatitudes or of the salt and light. This is how it has been treated for many years.

  4. The point of salt and light seems to be that the public lives of kingdom people will reflect the inner transformation that takes place when we identify ourselves by faith with the king.

  5. To hide your light under a basket is to not identify with the king when given the opportunity. One can speak up for moral things while hiding the light of the true king!

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

1 Peter 2:11 and Hebrews 11:13 suggest that God’s people live as exiles in a world that is not their home.

We suggest that Exiles have assumptions that differ from people who are at home:

  1. An exile does not have privilege or power or position, nor do they expect it. (No rights in Babylon)

  2. An exile is acutely aware that home is not here! (A future and a hope)

  3. An exile expects to be different from the inhabitants of his/her current land.

  4. An exile seeks to understand the customs of their new world, but keeps alive aspects of the old life.

Russell Moore asks, “What happens when people reject the church because they think we reject Jesus and the gospel?” He continued, “What if people don’t leave the church because they disapprove of Jesus, but because they’ve read the Bible and have come to the conclusion that the church itself would disapprove of Jesus?”

Jeremiah 29:4-14 suggests several activities of people in exile:

  1. Build — Houses, cultures, institutions. Community groups

  2. Plant gardens. Get rooted. It takes a while to get the produce. Long term plans

  3. Grow families. Yes, Babylon was probably a bad place to raise children.

  4. Seek the welfare of the city. Ask what good can I do here? How can I influence the city toward welfare and flourishing?

  5. Pray for the city. Don’t just gripe about the city.

  6. Don’t let false prophets lie to you about your rescue. You will all die here (70 years). Disciple your children.

Some of the Scripture passages we cited in this episode are:

Romans 12:9-21

Mark 12:30-31

2 Corinthians 5:20

“Social Media makes everyone a public figure.”

How to evaluate your social media posts:

  1. Is it true? Philippians 4:8

  2. Does it represent Jesus well? 2 Corinthians 4:7-11

  3. Does it make secondary things ultimate, or does it keep the main thing the main thing? Mark 10:28-31

  4. Should I just call someone about this?

I hope this makes your social media feed happier and a better representation of the kingdom of heaven.

Here are some of our learnings:

Scott was surprised to learn how much the Cold War influenced his Christianity.

Aeric learned submission when he didn't want to learn it. And, he learned to be grateful for it.

Scott’s second learning has to do with the identity of the church. The church must be clear on who they are if they are to endure difficult times.

Aeric’s appreciated the holiday episode because it helped him get American life and church each in the right place.

If you would like to connect with Aeric you can find him on Facebook or Twitter.

It is hard to overstate how grateful I am for a simple statement like 1 Peter 2:17 that served as a guide through this past year.

In this episode, we visit voting as stewardship.

Aeric recommends David French’s two-fold test (https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/how-then-should-christians-vote) recognizing that your vote is your endorsement. That means that voting for the “lesser of two evils” remains an endorsement for evil.

Your vote is your personal commitment to the person you vote even if your vote doesn’t make a difference in the election. (https://www.nationalreview.com/magazine/2020/10/19/voting-for-life/)

The smaller the election the more clout your vote will hold and the more difference you can make. Apply the two-fold test to local candidates, too. You can actually reach out to them and meet them. Aeric did.

Get out there and vote next week!

Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. — Lincoln’s second inaugural address.

The amount of bloodshed in the name of Christianity during this period was almost unimaginable. The consolidation of power with the church and various states proved more than either the church or the state could manage.

The evangelical reaction to Roe v. Wade as well as the ascendance of the Moral Majority defined what it means for the Evangelical Church to be active in political life.

We do a brief overview of this time in history and noticed that there were enough problems that these don’t really qualify as the ideal evangelical times.
