Nurturing Important RelationshipsOne of the first steps in developing holy habits is nurturing the important relationships in our lives. This includes our relationships with our spouse, children, close friends, and church community. By giving attention to these relationships, we demonstrate love and care for those who matter most to us.Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 - "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!"Repairing Broken RelationshipsWe all have broken relationships in our lives, and it's important for us to take steps towards healing and restoration. Pastor Shawn encourages us to repair these relationships, starting with forgiveness and kindness. By letting go of bitterness and anger, we create space for love and reconciliation to flourish.Scripture: Ephesians 4:31-32 - "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."Cutting Ties with Toxic RelationshipsSometimes, we need to make the difficult decision to distance ourselves from toxic relationships. These are the relationships that hinder our growth, pull us away from God, and negatively influence our lives. By cutting ties with these toxic relationships, we create space for healthier connections and allow God to work in our lives more effectively.Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:33 - "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company ruins good morals.'" Building Intentional RelationshipsIn addition to nurturing, repairing, and cutting ties, it's crucial to build intentional relationships. The Power of Choosing JoyWelcome to Vision Sunday! We are excited to share with you the amazing things God is doing in our church and around the world. In this blog, we will discuss how choosing joy can make a significant impact on our lives, regardless of our circumstances. We will explore three key choices that can lead to a life filled with joy and fulfillment.Seeing Beyond What HappenedThe Apostle Paul teaches us the importance of looking beyond what happened in our lives. In Philippians 1, Paul shares his experience of being imprisoned for preaching the gospel. Instead of dwelling on his circumstances, he chooses to focus on what is actually happening. Paul realizes that even though he is in chains, the gospel is still being advanced. He recognizes that what happened to him is not as important as what is actually happening - the spread of the good news. By shifting his perspective, Paul finds joy in the midst of his difficult situation.Looking for the RedirectJust as Paul found joy by looking beyond his circumstances, we too can experience joy by looking for the redirect in our lives. Paul acknowledges that some people may preach the gospel out of envy and rivalry, but he chooses to focus on what really matters - the fact that Christ is being preached. He understands that no matter the motives of others, what is important is the proclamation of the gospel. By shifting our focus from negative situations to the greater purpose, we can find joy in the midst of challenges and setbacks.Focusing on What Really MattersLastly, choosing to focus on what really matters can bring immense joy into our lives. Paul encourages us to rejoice in the Lord always, no matter the circumstances. He reminds us that the important thing is that Christ is being preached, and that is enough to bring joy to our hearts. When we rehearse the goodness of God and remember His faithfulness, we can find joy in the midst of any situation. Developing a Lifestyle of PrayerIn the midst of our "holy habits" series, we have been discussing the importance of incorporating habits into our lives that will truly make a difference. These habits are not meant to be temporary or fleeting, but rather to become a part of our daily routines, transforming our lives for the better. In this blog, we will focus on the habit of prayer, specifically how to make it a lifestyle rather than just a sporadic activity. Prayer is essential for our growth in our relationship with God, and it is something that can often be challenging for many Christians. However, with the right mindset and approach, we can develop a consistent and meaningful prayer life.Make Prayer a PriorityOne of the first steps in developing a lifestyle of prayer is to prioritize it in our lives. It's not enough to simply hope for a better prayer life; we must make a conscious effort to make prayer a priority. In Ephesians, we are encouraged to pray in the spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. This means that prayer should be an ongoing and habitual practice, not just a one-time event.We need to prioritize prayer by setting aside dedicated time for it, whether it's in the morning, during lunch breaks, or before bedtime. By making prayer a priority, we are showing God that we value our relationship with Him and that we are committed to growing closer to Him.Find Quiet PlacesIn order to have a focused and meaningful prayer time, it is important to find quiet places where we can be alone with God. Jesus set an example for us by frequently withdrawing to solitary places to pray. These quiet places allow us to shut out the noise and distractions of the world and create a space for intimate conversation with God.Quiet places can be physical locations, such as a designated prayer room or a peaceful spot in nature. However, they can also be times of the day when we intentionally create space for silence and solitude, such as early mornings or late evenings. The goal is to find a place where we can disconnect from the busyness of life and listen for God's voice.Have a Plan for PrayerWhile it's important to prioritize prayer and find quiet places, it's also helpful to have a plan for prayer. Sometimes, we may struggle with knowing what to pray for or how to structure our prayers. In Luke, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, and He responded by giving them the Lord's Prayer.We can create our own prayer plans by focusing on different aspects of our lives throughout the week. For example, on Mondays, we can pray for God to use us in our work or daily activities. On Tuesdays, we can pray for our families, and on Wednesdays, we can pray for our friends. By having a plan, we can ensure that our prayers cover various areas and that we don't run out of things to say.ConclusionDeveloping a lifestyle of prayer requires intentionality and commitment. By making prayer a priority, finding quiet places, and having a plan for prayer, we can cultivate a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God. This year can truly be the best year of our lives spiritually if we dedicate ourselves to growing in our walk with God through prayer. Do you sometimes struggle with trusting God? Even those who faithfully read their Bible, attend church, serve, and read His word struggle with trust. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn discusses why trusting God is hard. However, if we let go of control, fear, and hurt, then we’ll have the ability to hold onto God. To trust Him, we must surrender to Him.
Are you glad to be in the house of Lord? Or has your zeal for building God’s house faded? King David was obsessed with the house of God. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn reads verse after verse of David expressing how much love he had for building God’s house. In Psalm 69:9 he says, “…zeal for your house consumes me…” It’s easy to let our once-burning passion for God to wane and that’s exactly what the Enemy wants. But we can return that zeal back to God by putting our hands and hearts back into His house by loving what He loves!
When we breathe in the breath of God, we are meant to exhale it too. His breath isn’t meant to stay in us; He has empowered and equipped us to help those who desperately need His breath! People tend to be drawn to those who model consistency. Why is that? When someone is consistent, we trust them at their word because we’ve seen a pattern; a deliberate effort to stay on course.
In today’s message, Pastor Jennifer teaches about the life of Daniel who was the epitome of a consistent life. He had a strong relationship with God, which, when tested by the lion’s den, proved unshakable. Was Daniel perfect? No. But he made a habit of spending intentional time with God.
If you haven’t made a habit of spending time with God, start today! Consistency takes time to build, but it is rewarding.
God’s presence is everywhere. Even when you don’t think you sense God, He is still there. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn discusses the presence of God and how it is categorized into omnipresence, the indwelling in your spirit, and the manifest presence of God. The latter is something special where our awareness of God is awakened. God wants to enter into our lives and reveal Himself to us; all we need to do is open the door. What would it look like if you took 90 days to focus on inviting the presence of God into your life?
A well provides a life-giving supply of water and digging one is a costly, emotional act of faith that clear water runs below the layers and layers of dirt. But a well is about more than water. It’s the symbol of a thriving life.
In Pastor Shawn’s message, “Dig Again,” he speaks on Genesis 26:12–33 where Isaac must dig out his father’s wells which were filled in by his enemy. Are there any wells you need to dig out again? Our enemy, Satan wants nothing more than for your life to be dry, muddy, and weak; sapped of the living water of Jesus. He will do anything to stop up your wells with greed, lust, brokenness, and bitterness. But with God’s help, we can dig again. We can clear the dirt from our wells and find clear water once more.
Vision is a picture of a preferred future, and God has a vision and a purpose for the next generation. In his message, Pastor Daniel explains how, even though statistics may be disheartening, we should not be disheartened. With prayer, commitment to church, and participation in the next generation’s development, we can help them fully live out God’s vision for their lives.
Are you trying to figure everything out on your own? How’s that working out? Few would argue that we don’t need God’s voice in our lives, but that brings up another question: how do we know it’s God? In the last week of his series, “Speak Lord,” Pastor Shawn outlines how to determine if the voice that is directing you, truly belongs to God. Just like you can recognize the voice of a loved one on the phone, the closer you are to God, the easier it will be to discern His voice.
We hear a lot of noises throughout our daily lives between the sounds of our friends, our culture, and our jobs; but are we listening for the correct voice? The only thing that can truly satisfy our thirst is Jesus.

John Trent wrote, “No matter your age, the approval of your parents affects how you view yourself and your ability to pass that approval on to your children, spouse and friends.” We often spend our lives trying to prove something to someone, based on the kind of approval we received from our parents. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn explains that we are wired by God to desire approval. It’s easy to seek approval from other things aside from God, but He needs to be our main source. As a loving father, He wants to bless us with identity, love, and affirmation.
Money is complicated and it’s easy to believe that if we are able to reach a certain amount of money, we will be happy. However, that is not the case. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn discusses what the Bible says about tithe, money, and how to put God first in your life. All God wants is your heart.
In the last week of our Galatians series, speakers Alyssa, Chris, and Valerie close out the book with messages on the fruit of the spirit. As they speak on joy, patience, and peace respectively, they define each fruit and then give us practical steps on how to grow that fruit in our lives. It can be difficult to operate in the fruit of the spirit all the time, but if we ask God to help us, He will!

In today’s message Pastor Shawn discusses Galatians chapter five. Jesus has set us free and He wants us to stay free! In his message today, Pastor Shawn breaks down chapter four where Paul described how Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law, but rather to redeem those under the law. We are all born under the law, but when we accept Jesus as our savior, He bridges that gap between us and God. Jesus paid the debt! However, Jesus came not simply for you to be forgiven but for you to be adopted into the family of God; an heir of His Kingdom!
You know how when you go hiking, there are multiple ways to reach your destination? Often, you find the option between a few easy paths and a difficult path. However, as Christians, we know that there is only one path to get to God: Jesus. The message of the gospel is Jesus + Nothing. In today’s first message of our Galatians series, Pastor Shawn gives us some backstory on Paul, the author of Galatians. In the first chapter, Paul reiterates the truth of salvation being a free gift. We don’t need to do anything but accept Jesus’ gift.
If you’ve recently decided to follow Jesus, you might be asking “now what?” In today’s message, Pastor Shawn details practical steps you can take in order to grow in your journey with Jesus. Moses encountered many barriers when stepping into God’s assignment for his life and through him, we can learn important lessons on how to overcome similar barriers in our own lives.
Life is often full of uncertainty. In this message, using the powerful story of Mary, Pastor Jennifer reminds us that miracles can happen when our willingness to trust God intersects with His plan for our lives. Do you know someone who is ruled by their appetite whether that be physical hunger or an appetite for more money, power, and material things? Don’t leave your hunger unchecked because it’s powerful enough to determine the direction of your life.
In today’s message, Pastor Shawn uses the example of Jacob and Esau in Genesis to show how giving into immediate hunger of the now can derail what God has in store for us later on. Hunger always says trade the ultimate for the immediate and if we’re not careful, it can ruin us. Don’t trade your future for a bowl of stew.
What makes an amazing leader? Guest speaker Pastor David Hale brings a powerful message on how to lead effectively. In Luke 8 and 9 Pastor David breaks down some important leadership lessons from Jesus, including communicating clearly, leading by example, and sharing the win. People don’t follow a vision; they follow a leader with a vision.
Have you ever been through a difficult situation? Did you wonder if you were the only one? The truth is, you’re not alone. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn begins a series pulling lessons from the lives of great men and women of the Bible who have been through difficult situations. We can draw encouragement from their lives by studying how they responded when life got hard.
We are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14 says that we need to let our light shine before the world so that they will see it and turn to Jesus. Pastor Shawn teaches from this passage in today’s message and shows us practical steps we can take to become a light that shines brightly in the darkness of our world. There are people that you know that apart from Jesus they will spend an eternity separated from Him. Those people need you.
Think about your closest friend. How did that friendship begin? Likely it began because the two of you shared a common interest. The power that common interest creates in our lives can sometimes stem from difficult seasons. But God wants to use those seasons for good to encourage others. No one knows this concept better than Peter. In today’s message, Jay Tigner brings a powerful word centered on Peter and the seasons of struggle in his life, but then also how he allowed God to use those seasons. Jay uses Peter’s story to teach us three main lessons: don’t sleep on the enemy’s plans for your life, don’t give up on God’s plans and purposes for your life, and don’t throw away what God wants to use. The enemy wants to isolate us and burden us with shame over our past. However, you have an opportunity to let God use what you’ve been through to help someone currently experiencing the same thing.
Do you have a 2am friend? Someone you can call in the middle of the night no matter what? God created us to be in relationships whether we’re introverts or extroverts. Pastor Shawn explains the importance of finding community in today’s message. He says, “you’ll always stay as sick as your secrets” unless you open up and share your burdens with others. We are all called to engage in community with each other because even if everything is going well now, storms will come and we need each other during those tough seasons. We need people who will walk with us and support us. God’s system for pulling the best out of all of us, is by spending time together.
Do you make a habit of welcoming people into your home and sharing meals together? It can be so easy to encase ourselves in our own little worlds. But living in a bubble isn’t what Jesus has called us to. In today’s message, Pastor Jennifer discusses the importance of hospitality and how impactful it can be for others and for you. So, what is hospitality? Simply, it is the generous and gracious treatment of guests. If you want to be the hands and feet of Jesus, practice His example by sharing your home, meals, and time with others.
It’s Vision Sunday and we are joining Lifepoint Virginia in a message brought by our global senior pastor, Pastor Daniel Floyd! Have you ever felt like you were moving forward only to see that you’re actually moving backwards? Disappointments can cause hesitancy to the point where you become afraid to make any future plans. Is the noise of your current, busy life drowning out the voice of God? Sometimes it happens without us realizing it and before we know it, we’re living in mistrust, despair, and hate. Before Elijah was strong enough to step out of the cave of depression in 1 Kings 9:3-9, an angel instructed him to tend to his physical needs. God wants us to get out of the darkness of our depression, but sometimes that requires some action on our part. In the second week of our series, “Out of the Cave,” Pastor Jen McGill gives us practical steps toward conquering our depression through rest, seeking God’s presence, believing in our true identity, finding our purpose, and surrounding ourselves with encouraging relationships.
Have you ever stepped back from a moment in your life and thought “how did I get here?” The prophet Elijah found himself asking that very question. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn digs into Elijah’s story and the season of depression he faced even as a powerful man of God. The Enemy continually seeks to monopolize our weaknesses and overwhelm our lives with a spirit of heaviness any chance he gets. But if we can take our thoughts captive and meditate on whatever is good, pure, and admirable (Philippians 4:8-9), we can take steps towards trading our heaviness for God’s joy and peace.
How is your communication? If you want relationships that are built to last, your ability to communicate is vital. However, although communication can have positive affects, it can also have negative ones. Words are powerful. In today’s message, Pastor Shawn teaches from Matthew 12:36-37 where Jesus describes how words can both build our relationships up, and also tear them down. What we say should reflect who we are over what we feel, because God desires us to speak life into our relationships.
Great relationships are possible but not probable because we often build our relationships on the wrong principles. God has a specific way he desires us to live our lives, which includes our relationships.
