Female Genital Mutilation

What is FGM?

FGM is the umbrella name for all procedures that involves partial or total removal to the female external genitalia; or any other interference of the female genital organs for no medical reason. It is most commonly carried out by another female in a tribe/society/community that is present who may also be present for births.

Female Genital Mutilation is internationally regarded as an invasion of human rights. The practice is undertaken at such an early age to ensure future prospective husbands that the female they have married is experiencing sexual intercourse for the first time with them. Given the intensity of this tradition, and families “need” to marry off their daughters, the practice has continued to be so prevalent.

It is categorised by the following “types”

Type 1: this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans (the external and visible part of the clitoris, which is a sensitive part of the female genitals), and/or the prepuce/ clitoral hood (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoral glans).

Type 2: this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and the labia minora (the inner folds of the vulva), with or without removal of the labia majora (the outer folds of skin of the vulva ).

Type 3: Also known as infibulation, this is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora, or labia majora, sometimes through stitching, with or without removal of the clitoral prepuce/clitoral hood and glans (Type I FGM).

Type 4: This includes all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.

Statistics on FGM refer to our list at then end of these notes for our resources:

200 million women worldwide are affected by FGM.

1 Million women in Europe are at threat of FGM.

The Procedure is generally undertaken by someone with high reputation within respective societies.

It is occasionally undertaken by nurses, midwives and doctors.

The procedure is carried out on young females between the ages of infancy up until around 15 years of age. Most commonly before puberty.

It is usually undertaken without anaesthetic and with unhygienic instruments such as razor blades, scissors, knives, broken glass.

There is an extensive list of affects of FGM on the victim including but not limited to psychological, physical and sexual.

During the procedure and thereafter, the female is at risk dying from bleeding out, shock, infections etc. Then after while and after the wound has healed, the victim will experience excruciating pain, bruising, potential of cysts and infections such as HIV/AIDS, tetanus, blood poisoning and paralysis of the bladder.

When the female needs to urinate or is menstruating, excruciating pain and discomfort is also experienced.

There are also many risks of childbirth if the female is a victim of FGM.

Roughly 53,000 women have been living with FGM in Australia

There is no medical reason for FGM, there are no health benefits, only harm.
