"Don't You Remember?": Recent Episodes

Theba Lolley

"Don't you remember?" They are three common words. Yet, when spoken too often, they’re cause for alarm. When your loved ones begin their journey into dementia, your own life-altering pilgrimage is set in motion. The path holds countless challenges including grief, despair, and joy: often all in a single day. The fear of not knowing what to do first can be overwhelming. For me, being proactive instead of reactive was empowering. Through these podcasts, I hope to give you tools in the form of resources and shared experiences, so you realize you’re not alone. I’m Theba. For the past 25 years, I have worked in TV News. I’m also the daughter of parents who lived in two different states, Illinois and Arkansas, when each were diagnosed with dementia in the same year. I entered into a season of intense anxiety and helplessness. I’d seen a few movies about older adults having memory problems and the sadness and difficulties their families faced, but I felt far removed from that reality. In my family cancer and old age claimed my relatives. The word dementia was new to me until an aggressive form of the disease took my father. Today I am the sole caregiver for my mother who is living with Alzheimer’s. Though very difficult, the struggles of caring for parents with dementia have also revealed great joy! I started sharing my experiences on television during the pandemic of 2020. In my heart, I knew there were many just like me trying to understand and adapt to caring for a loved one. The people I’ve met along the way have offered life-changing advice and support. My mission now is to encourage you on your own journey. I know God has been my strength and hope along the way and has led me to this new season of sharing so that you too can find comfort from those who do remember.

Like many, we have had a life with some trauma, disappointment and loss, and know that there could be more ahead before we go home to be with our Heavenly Father.  Nonetheless, there have been a great deal more of God's faithful provisions that have to be recognized and professed.

The first person I reached out to was my dear friend, Anne Jansen.  I had listened to her journey as she walked with both of her aging parents through some tough transitions. Her father passed from Parkinson's and mother passed away from Alzheimer's.  This Thanksgiving I wanted to honor her for always being a light to me.  And our extra side dish during the podcast, mom interacts with us at the end and is her delightful self.

After a 30-year career in advertising and public relations, Janet started her company 4 1/2 years ago. Her goal is to help people make smooth transitions in their lives through getting organized, decluttering, downsizing, and in many cases moving to new locations.

She began JOTS after seeing the challenges her Dad faced when he became ill and had to move to out of his home into an assisted living facility. She made arrangements so that the move was “done in a day” with no need for her Dad to be involved.

**Janet and her crew members now help people around the United Stares take care of their family members who have special needs, such as Alzheimer patients, so that their move to a new space is seamless. They literally handle everything from A to Z because their clients’ needs are so unique and individual.

In between the blowing of the nose, the sun blinding us and the giggles I share a new incident that effected us both deeply in the moment. And though she doesn't remember it I attempt to explain it without upsetting her to give you all a glimpse of how Alzheimer's can present itself if even for a brief time.

015.  I'm not crying, you're...  I realize this disease is terminal, but 'm not conscious of it most of the time. But then there are times my thoughts line up in a mystical way I'm overcome emotionally.  Always aware of the difficulty and beauty of that moment I accept I'm not in denial. I won't allow myself to pitch my tent in despair, but understanding its reality I then pack up and move gently onto our joyful journey together

010.  This morning it's all about the cats and yes of course our love, gratitude and need for our Heavenly Father.  During these sessions I try and keep it light - talking just briefly about her Alzheimer's where she can engage about the disease if she wants to.  But my Amin goal is to hear her heart. My biggest desire during these chats is to affirm her importance in my life and let her know I did and still do learn from her.

008.  Another opportunity to sit on the back porch and chat with my mom about the moment, about life.  Some memories and sentiment are constants, but the tone and focus can be different and that is always interesting.  Her earthy father and Heavenly Father were sweetly on her heart this morning.  It was obvious this morning she was alert to the moment and had some advice for us all.

007. The truth is you can't dictate things with your loved one with dementia, so if you can actually sit down and have a relaxed fun recorded conversation - at any stage of the disease - then what a joyful moment. Mom's  short term memory is non-existent, but she knows who she is, who I am and where she is, so I'm grateful for that reality, today.  I've tried to sit down with mom before but could tell the situation would not be beneficial for either of us. But today she appeared settled and I was peaceful, so I decided to take my rolling podcast table outside in the backyard to record. This is her favourite place to be. With us both relaxed and weather beautiful I just let the moment unfold - making it a sweet time to document.

001. I was a caregiver for my father who had  Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)  and I’m currently a caregiver for my mother with Alzheimer’s.  Divorced and living in two different states, they were both diagnosed in 2017, but showed cognitive memory issues years prior.  In that same year I moved my Dad into an apartment closer to me, literally 5 blocks away.  Within a year I needed to hire professional help to take care of him as I divided my time between two households and working a full-time job.  Some of it is still a blur, but the arrival of my brother  in 2019 was pivotal as we both focused on making sure both Mom and Dad were safe and comfortable. Dad died November of 2019. This year I went part-time at my job to give Mom more focused attention and in return, pay more attention to my physical and mental health as we walk this journey together.  I asked my friend and co-worker, Ashley King, to sit with me to help tell just part of my story.
